Human Rights Watch Reverses Position On Rendition

Is there nothing that Obama can't do!

"Under limited circumstances, there is a legitimate place" for renditions, said Tom Malinowski, the Washington advocacy director for Human Rights Watch.

"Limited circumstances include a Democrat in the White House," he did not need to add.

"Under executive orders issued by Obama recently, the CIA still has
authority to carry out what are known as renditions, secret abductions and
transfers of prisoners to countries that cooperate with the United States.

Current and former U.S. intelligence officials said that the rendition
program might be poised to play an expanded role going forward because it
was the main remaining mechanism -- aside from Predator missile strikes --
for taking suspected terrorists off the street."

This wasn't the 'change' you were looking for...

Now for the fun stuff - what mental contortions will the obamatons go through to rationalise this HRW 'blessing' of moral authority to the base?

Posted by: junior at February 2, 2009 12:33 AM

They just can't help themselves, can they? Moreover, they don't even recognize their hypocrisy.

Posted by: Wayne at February 2, 2009 12:59 AM

Sounds good to me. We're not fighting to be their friends.

Posted by: Pat at February 2, 2009 1:46 AM

When the person in the White House (or anywhere for that matter) can do no wrong and the media circle the wagons around him and spin all news to ensure there isn't even the slightest negative comment made about the leader, then liberty and freedom are at tremendous risk.

Rendition is right/wrong regardless of the stripe of the governing party.

There are two possible explanations for the Obama cult's consternation in these types of issues. Either one is correct, or maybe both.

First possibility is that POTUS bHo is an inexperienced fool who was not properly vetted by the Obama supporters. If so they were/are fools.

Second possibility is that POTUS bHo is a shrewd political hack who fooled all those who voted for him. If so they were/are fools.

Either way, a lot of fools somewhere out there have little to complain about, and a lot of explaining to do, now and in the future. Votes have consequences.

Note: If one can stomach it a visit to read some of the posts in such a place as Democratic Underground leaves one breathless and with a brain bruise.

Human Rights Watch in particular and "Progressiveville" in general-"Hypocrisy, the homage vice pays to virtue."

So putting them in the responsible care of US governemnt people where they are given some degree of habeaous corpus at Gitmo and perhaps the odd waterboarding is a huge violation, but kidnapping them secretly and shipping them to some foreign country where they will suffer unspeakable torture and probably death is okay.

Surely some in the MSM are going to break away from the cult over this.

It's interesting how the heading "Is there nothing Obama can't do?" has acquired new shades of meaning over time. It began (I think) as an accusation of naievte and excessive expectation on the part of his supporters. Now, it also means that any action is OK, provided Obama is the one doing it.

I'll take "inexperienced fool" for a thousand, yoop.

He's governing like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

I second that Kate. But will he be able to avoid getting his tail caught in 4 years.

"I'll take "inexperienced fool" for a thousand, yoop.

Ah... yep.

It would be entertaining, and fun to watch, if it weren't so damn serious.

I like your analogy. I'm afraid that I view it more as he having been dropped into the middle of one of those British hedge mazes, without a single clue as to which way is up, down or out.

Unfortunately our safety rest with him finding the way out in the next few months.

We are in trouble, big time, because (as my 85 year-old Mother STILL likes to say) " he can't figure out if he should shit, wind his watch, or steal first base".

At least it appears that we can take *some* solace that the O hasn't kyboshed all of GWB's counter terror methods.(his domestic policy is much scarier)

The fact that the MSM can spin anything in the O's favor is good for O'bummer. Republicans and Conservatives must learn how to be "cooler" and how to use the media more effectively. We have to quit "hating the player" and start respecting his "game".

Posted by: Indiana Homez at February 2, 2009 10:49 AM

keep your eye on the ball....IMO the big O may be throwing a few bones to the 'right' ie rendition and keeping the 'guano in Guantanamo' but it's still full steam ahead at keeping his 'base' content....this constituency will get an Acorn with a bulging treasury which is the sine qua non of shaping consent for future legislation.. ....

We have to quit "hating the player" and start respecting his "game".

The problem is that lefties don't care one iota about the rules of the game; they only care that they keep their guy in charge.

Posted by: glasnost at February 2, 2009 10:58 AM

'keeping the guano in Guantanamo'

i'm kinda proud of that...

Posted by: john begley at February 2, 2009 11:06 AM

The difference is a more caring rendition. A rendition-lite so to speak. They will still send 'militants' to be water-boarded or worse, but they care more about the militant's sensibilities.

A kinder gentler rendition. A kinder gentler American. A softer fatter America. A more gullible America, A less ostentatious America. A more dumbed down America that absolutely no one is going to stop hating.

Love the leader, hate the country.

In other news...

No one at the RNC has shown up for work and Rush Limbaugh isn't answering his phone.

600 left-owned private jets reportedly left US airspace in the wee hours. No destinations were filed on the flight plans.

I'm not sold in the "inexperienced fool" meme just yet.

I see a possible "uncle Joe" as in uncle joe Stalin strategy here. BO knows that much of the kook-left stuff that he supported pre-election should never see the light of day now that he is potus. So rather than directly saying he cannot/will not do it, he is proposing doing it and then letting the underlings or opponents defeat the attempt. Some examples:

he appoints a committee to examine gitmo saying he will close it but knowing that this committee will never do it during the next four years.

he says he wants out of Iraq in 16 months but defers the final decision to his defense staff whom he knows will never accept that timeline.

he brings forth state by state fuel and emmissions regs only to relent from protests by auto companies

This is the same tactic that Stalin used - publically sounding like he was giving all he could for those in the Ukraine while privately knowing damn well the harm he was causing. Meanwhile the peasantry was thinking "if only uncle joe knew what was happening".

Well, 'uncle' bo knows exactly what's happening in cahoots with 'Beria' emmanuel of course.

2. I agree that much of this stuff is being done to mollycoddle the right in preparation for an attempt to ram through the New New Deal. However Rush and an increasing number of those on the right are onto BO and are having none of it (check out the interview of Rush by Hannity on Youtube - very informative and impressive analysis by Rush - brilliant guy all things considered).

I note that the Ottawa Citizen carried the basic story today_ on page 8 under World news. This comes after 2 weeks of rapturous coverage of all things Obama. There is no mention of Human Rights Watch and very little analysis, some mention of Strained relations with Europe. Seems a shift in emphasis with these type of stories from the past 6 years.

Posted by: Martin at February 2, 2009 1:31 PM

Gee, I'm shocked (SHOCKED!) that HRW is talking out of both their faces at the same time.

Great name for those guys. When it comes to REAL human rights violations, all the do is watch.

Posted by: mojo at February 2, 2009 1:47 PM

Gord Tulk, I think you're right. I think BO is a pretty smart politician - who will govern in a continuation pattern from GWB.

I'm not sure how skilled he is in international negotiations though, with all of its intricities; but in terms of "local" - ie - national - politics - he is a total pragmatist.

The only other politician who seemed to have similar instincts to outplay the media was Ralph Klein.

Ralph would put things out and say "I didn't really mean that" if people were opposed

Obama puts things out - and says "well, not just now, the climate is just not right for that type of reform"

More nuanced - but an interesting comparison

glas

I'm just saying that "hating" or you may call it "jealous" doesn't solve anything, it is what it is.

What conservatives need is a strategy to inform young voters what conservatives stand for. At this time conservatives are defined by liberals to young demographics. IF THIS DOESN'T CHANGE WE ARE LOST, because we can not depend on Sir Winston Churchill's 20yr/40yr rule any longer. We are too far down the dark path, as Dick Morris points out "when more than half of people don't pay taxes, we can't expect them to care how high those taxes are"; therefore, if you are 40 and you are not a socialist, you're f*ck'd!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....HAH!!!!

Geez, you can't write stuff this good.

Reality beats satire any day...in the Obama administration.

Don't see how anyone can or would want to conflate an activist group like HRW with actual policy but the fact that the HRW nimrods are selective as to who's policy they kinda like as opposed to being shocked and dismayed over is not a surprise at all.

Stay tuned for some ACLU head explosions.
