FEMA 2."O"

"Obama Dozed, People Froze!"

Amid reports of storm stranded residents not resorting to cannibalism, Kentucky has
called up entire Army National Guard.

More than half a million homes and businesses, most of them in Kentucky, remained with out electricity from the Ozarks through Appalachia, though temperatures creeping into the 40s helped a swarm of utility workers make headway. Finding fuel - heating oil along with gas for cars and generators - was another struggle for those trying to tough it out at home, with hospitals and other essential services getting priority over members of the public.

The addition of 3,000 soldiers and airmen makes 4,600 Guardsmen pressed into service. It's the largest call-up in Kentucky history, which Beshear called an appropriate response to a storm that cut power to more than 600,000 people, the state's largest outage on record. Many people in rural areas cannot get out of their driveways due to debris and have no phone service, the governor said.

"With the length of this disaster and what we're expecting to be a multi-day process here, we're concerned about the lives and the safety of our people in their own homes," Beshear said, "and we need the manpower in some of the rural areas to go door-to-door and do a door-to-door canvass ... and make sure they're OK."

"PS: can I just add at this point -- so far, no reports of looting!"

More - "Someone needs to go wake up President Oblivious, because he must be snoozing in that warm Oval Office after his big Wagyu Steak binge not to have noticed, mentioned a word, or taken any emergency actions to this days long debacle."

At Instapundit - "“What Katrina taught the media was that they could hurt Bush by lying. What 2008 taught them was that they could help Obama by not reporting at all. What will 2009 teach them? I shudder to think.”"

You know, when the US economy comes crashing down from Chairman O's constant spending, HE, not GWB is going to be the one "to need a good war" to divert attention. Why else is the Chairman softening up defenses? To let a major city get nuked, and then it's going to be all out war against Russia in the ME.

What will Leftards say then? Or will they finally Heil, er, salute their fuehrer, er, the flag for a change?

Posted by: Doug at February 1, 2009 10:12 AM

As long as we make the right point:

The question isn't "where is FEMA?" Fema was only invented in the 1970s and for some reason, Americans lived without it. Those that died, well, died, because sometimes people -- gasp! -- die during acts of God.

The question should be "where is the media?" asking "Hey, when is Obama gonna visit City XYZ?!??"

PS: can I just add at this point -- so far, no reports of looting!

PPS: I got this via email today. Make of it what you wish:

"How did the same people who couldn't bother leaving New Orleans when a hurricane was coming manage to haul *** to Obama's inaugural in the bitter cold?"

Only Democrats are entitled to Fema disaster relief - only states that voted for Obama will get disaster relief and be declared a national emergency. Obama eats $100 steak while people in Kentucky eat cold beans from a can. Hope those folks have a manual can opener.

it looks like BO did not have a very good first week.

With BO probably more than any other POTUS perception is everything. If the initial few weeks and months develop the perception that he is weak he could have lots of trouble from the house and congressional leadership.

I remember during the California wildfires a few years ago, a woman on the telly was lamenting that the federal government was "totally unprepared", and it was her neighbours that came to the rescue with horse trailers to move her animals.

Self-reliance and helping neighbours seems to be a thing of the past for some people - I don't quite expect FEMA to deploy a network of stored horse trailers across the US "just in case".

It is all in the perspective you have from where you sit. I guess there is little the administartion can do about a Global Warming event.

Shouldn't Obama be flying over Kentucky right now, shining down his magnetic rays to warm things up? This is the man who can keep the oceans from rising by his own admission.

Instead, he's hunkering down in a White House heated to Hawaiian tropical standards to watch football while non-Obama voting-worshipping Kentuckians freeze in the cold and dark. Obama doesn't care about white people!

Meanwhile, his media handmaidens are still filing stories on how New Orleans, called "chocolate city" by its re-elected mayor, a.k.a. the moneypit for tens of billions got "shafted".

And by the way, cold periods as opposed to warming periods throughout the history of mankind kill more people. Not that the global warming socialist Chicken Littles are ever going to part with that information.

I truly feel for the people in Kentucky surviving through an ice storm......been there, done that myself. They really really need a fine man like General Rick Hillier to help them because he sure knew what to do in the ice storm in Eastern Canada in 1998. If anyone has ever wondered how long it takes to revert back to a "cash" society it only takes hours in a disaster....however with no electricity bank machines don't work, gas stations unless using a generator pump no gas, a loaf of bread suddenly becomes worth 7$ and candles sell for 5$ and on and on the list goes.
Without electricity pretty well nothing works...plain and simple.

Posted by: The Glengarrian at February 1, 2009 2:39 PM

James, lots of claims turn out to be groundless, from the CIA invented AIDS to Oswald had help. And millions of people still believe these claims and will to the end of time.

Most people are stupid. They believe the first thing they hear. The rumor was reported by "left wing media" but was INVENTED AND SPREAD by blacks about their fellow blacks in the Superdome.

Katrina was "bad" because thousands of lazy imbeciles insisted on living below sea level on welfare as high school dropouts with no gumption or common sense, then voted in shiftless corrupt Dems to run their lives because they still have pictures of RFK on the walls of their shacks.

Also, not sure why you're bugging me about the cannibalism ref since Kate was the one who brought it up.

Very true!! All we had to get us through the ice storm was a woodstove, a tractor with a front end loader (for pushing debris)one flashlight and candles. Neighbours moved in with us because we had that little to survive with and they had nothing.

Posted by: The Glengarrian at February 1, 2009 3:30 PM

Funny the whole horse trailer to safety thing got mentioned. Yours truly just went down there with her horse trailer to pick up the sister-in-law's kids and some family belongings down there(the kids rode in the truck, although I did threaten them with the trailer if they didn't stop bouncing around in the cab).

Their old house had a wood burning stove, but they moved to a new one this summer, and guess what -- most new homes aren't equipped with wood burners (I guess they're bad for the environment and all that).

Didn't see any signs of looting or civil unrest in general (outside of some mild griping about the weather) -- sort of like in my mom's town with the floods and tornados last spring. For the record, nobody from the government helped bail (literally) out folks in Mom's town either, and there was no looting or civil disobedience (besides some mild griping about the weather).

I think the flyover folks need to start learning to pitch more of a fit.

I would dare say there is a VERY strong probability Oswald never even fired a gun that day, much less fired a frontal shot that blew the back of Kennedy's head on to the truck and lawn. You'v just touched on a subject I'v read long and hard about for many years.

Posted by: GYM at February 1, 2009 4:02 PM

Edward Teach and Glengarian - do you wish to hear a big bellow from the 'carbon cows'? Wood is NOT for burning!! Wood stoves are considered Politically incorrect because they leave smoke in the air!!

People are not allowed to burn wood in Crouton's Wife's Park (the Yukon) because wood smoke pollutes the air. It is, of course, the height of stupidity for a whole city to be TOTALLY dependant on electricity to heat their houses, esp in a place where power failure is not unusual and in a place where -40 below for weeks is not unusual. Last winter the city of Whitehorse had a 12 hour power failure - it was -20 below -pipes froze and people went and sat in their running vehicles to keep warm. 12 more hours without power would have been a disaster, yet the law is still in place.

In 2004 wildfires in the forests burned over half of the Yukon's timber. We had 2 weeks of warm weather in June; there was no attempt by the Feds (Liberanos) or the Territorial(Liberano lite) gov'ts to fight the fires. The gov't Park Wardens did , however, manage to stumble through the smoke and find and fine 4 young Austrians who were building a raft out of dead wood to float down the Yukon River to Dawson City.

We have inmates running the asylum in too many places, in Canada. It is always such a relief to visit SDA where voices of sanity pipe up to drown out the squawks of the babbling imbeciles.

Thanks again for this cyber oasis, Kate.

GYM, having "read long and hard for many years about the Kennedy assassination" isn't something to brag about.

I spent many years in buffdom, and have concluded that such "Long and hard" (cough) "research" such as yours is one step below a grown man collecting model trains, and is usually a sign of either alcoholism or high functioning autism or both. Reading a lot of books filled with poor explanations for physical phenomenon doesn't make you smart. It makes you stupid, and the more of it your read, the stupider you get.

My sentence reads "many people believe many things, FROM XYZ TO Oswald had help.

Meaning, "from 'XYX' to 'Oswald had help.'"

This is a comments thread. Punctuation is optional. Sorry to violate your single quotation marks theory.

Some municipalities in and near the GTA have banned wood burning but the most widespread issue is the difficulty of getting insurance with a wood burning facility----except an outdoor wood boiler.....
Many folks purchase a home then the insurance company sends in a "surveyor" who orders a fireplace blocked or a wood stove removed.
It's all about risk and a demographic which hasn't a clue about maintaining stove-pipes/chimneys.......
A local fireman tell of the coincidence of very cold nights and chimney fires....

Watching Holmes on Homes last night they installed a new fireplace that comes with a catalac converter thingy. No smoke just vapour being released from the chimney. It burns cleaner than my new car or an oil fired furnace.

The eco warriors are a decade late and a dollar short on new tecnology me thinks.

Posted by: Rose at February 1, 2009 7:19 PM

Sasquatch....the insurance industry had a very real hate on for woodburning stoves in this area in the years before the ice storm. If you had a wood stove you paid extra on your policy and could count on a visit for a loss prevention officer (isn't that a nice PC title)to inspect, inspect and inspect some more. When the ice storm hit in January '98 and people had no way of heating their homes for up to 4 weeks and there was severe damage (imagine everything including electronics frozen solid)the insurance companies sure changed their tune about woodstoves and the fact those with backup heat had no claims.
Believe me when something happens the # 1 priority is to stay warm and # 2 is something to eat...dry cereal for weeks on end just doesn't cut it sorta scenario...dry cereal because the milk and everything else in the fridge has gone bad with no refrigeration.
One of the neighbours that moved in here was border line vegetarian. When she left she was a born again meat eater after living on a beef farm for 3 weeks. So leftism can be cured. At least by me.

Posted by: The Glengarrian at February 1, 2009 7:22 PM

Gym then why did you insult MY punctuation, gayboy?

Dyslexic, well that's another good explanation for your buffdom. Don't tell me: you believe in a conspiracy involving the CAI, the BFI, Buca and the Bom? (Get someone to explain that one to you.) Don't you wonder if your dyslexia has effected the efficacy of that "lifetime" of reading you've been doing on this subject??

Edward: the crappy Carcano thing is another canard. Sharpshooters have easily duplicated Oswald's shots with his own rifle, now in the National Archives. Oswald was rated a sharpshooter in the Marine Corps.

http://patterico.com/2007/08/03/meeting-vincent-bugliosi/

The M-C is widely refered to as a 'POS' because US gun manufacturers were concerned about foreign gun imports in the 1950s and 60s. Calling that and other Italian made bolt actions 'crappy' says more about the success of US manufacturer's marketing copy than it does about ballistics etc.

Like much good marketing, this Carcano slag has held on to this day as "common knowledge", rather like Protestant anti-Catholic propaganda about "chained bibles" -- or the phrase "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," which is also an old marketing/ad slogan.

Kathy: Sorry; only the first paragraph was supposed to be addressed to you. Maybe the two paragraphs should have been in reverse order. I guess I was operating on the assumption that any paragraph not explicitly addressed to a commenter would be taken as being addressed to the host, but I can see how I would be misinterpreted. I only addressed anything to you at all because I thought (wrongly?) that you genuinely wanted to know the governor of Kentucky's partisan affiliation, even if it was not what you expected.

And by "bad enough as it is" I was referring to the atrocities that occurred and were committed by the people of New Orleans, not to anything Bush-related. Sheesh, I would think I've popped enough in enough comment threads over the years that you would know my general political affiliation by now.

(I always thought the "below sea-level" argument was historically tendentious, though, as it seems to act as if "lazy imbeciles" were the ones who put the city there to begin with, which is obviously not the case. And it's still true that I don't know of anyone who spread the cannibalism myth besides Randall Robinson - not "blacks" in the plural. He made a fool of himself pretty quickly. And honestly, I don't know if I can quite follow your argument - since many people believe false things, there's no harm in referring to them? Huh?)

This was his Nov 2 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle - video on youtube. Lots of links to this unmentionable story in Newsbusters archives.

In addition he vows to cure America's "addiction" to oil - cold turkey no doubt.

Well Kathy I don't really know what to believe where the Kennedy assassination is concerned. Personally I believe that the "vast conspiracy" theory gives Kennedy more importance than he is entitled to. I also am not convinced that Oswald did the shooting...rather convenient that he got whacked before he could start answering questions!
I do know this though: if in fact he was a competent rifleman, there's no way in hell that he would have brought a rifle that could only manage a 5" group at 80 yards to an assassination!

I'm very proud of the Americans in Kentucky and surrounding environs dealing with the temperature extremes. If you recall last year, floods in Iowa had the rivers swelling to the size of the Amazon running horizontally across the state. I fly to Chicago frequently and could hardly believe what I was seeing. The economic strain to the state was underreported, and I'm sure the BBC barely mentioned the situation. These events more reflect the strength of Americans and America than the sorry display produced by the Democratic minions in New Orleans.
