Live By The Slur... "Catgastrogaffe"

(bumped) the "Catgastrogaffe" scandal grows... How Ignatieff’s war room handles a crisis"

Seriously, for someone who claims to be an Internet guru, he is exceptionally naïve – like this time, when he seemed to think a Nigerian scam-mail letter was real; or this time, when he bought into an Internet hoax about cell phones – and then deleted his embarrassing responses to same. I wonder if Kinsella has liquid paper all over his computer screen. [...]

Is this the template for how Ignatieff will handle other crises in the future? No campaign is error-free; no chatty politician, let alone a team of them, can get through a campaign without making gaffes. A war room cannot stop gaffes from happening, but they can try to defuse them as soon as possible. Kinsella turned a one-day minor story into half a week and counting – and his blamestorming “apology” will only irritate anyone who actually reads it, though I’m not sure the 200,000+ readers of Sing Tao are all clicking their way over to Kinsella’s site right now.

In the interest of fairness and balance - "Lots of people do eat cat."

He's one of Canada's leading assholes and he should lose his job. Anyone else committing such a politically incorrect blunder would certainly be punished for it.

Not that what he said was so bad, but that he has lambasted so many others for the same thing.

He is a man-child hypocrite but then, he must know that. His narcissism won't allow him to feel remorse.

I picture the plucky Chretienites self-flagellating in disgust, crying, "why did we load up Section 13 with all this crap, truth is no defense, hurt feelings, likely to cause contempt. What were we thinking?"

Pass the chopsticks.

No quarter for the self-described "ass kiker"

He can throw a punch, let's see him take a few.

Iggy can fire him and stay clean, or be tarred by Kinsella's scuzzy, slimy bottom feeding reputation.

When you lay down with a pig, you smell like a pig.

Iggy, your choice.

Posted by: Fred at January 30, 2009 8:12 PM

Ignatieff should fire him because he's a political liability, and a link to the Chretien era.

I've
always disliked Warren because of the "Barney" stunt he had them pull on Stockwell Day, one of the more decent people in politics.

Posted by: dmorris at January 30, 2009 8:16 PM

Has this hit the MSM yet? Nothing will happen unless it does since Kinsella's relevance doesn't extend beyond Canadian blogs (and he's barely relevant to those who do follow the blogs).

Posted by: Ebla at January 30, 2009 8:18 PM

People like Kinsella are so self absorbed that I doubt the impact of this scenario will even faze him and should he escape unscathed then don't expect any real remorse or introspection on his part.
Warren plain and simple got his "ass caught in the wringer" by trying to appear cool to his audience when in fact it was no more than an illuminating insight into Warren's rather insecure psyche.
What may prove to be the saddest part of this paper dragon could be WK missing the perfect opportunity to readdress his so called racist warrmanmongering tendencies and realize that a big chunk of life's everyday humour is in fact accomplished by embelllishing our thoughts at the harmless expense of ourselves or others at that place fondly known as the Theater of the Absurd!
Shake a leg Warren and remember that what goes around comes around.

Posted by: simon at January 30, 2009 8:27 PM

I would be concerned if Igbert fired Kinswaila. It would show a modicum of discernment. We don't want that in any libleader - better to have Warren implode at a more appropriate time.

Posted by: Agent Smith at January 30, 2009 8:28 PM

"Hopefully, he does lose his job."

Why? He's a liability to the Liberals. Remember, Mr. Kicking Ass in Canadian Politics couldn't even kick my ass...or yours. Leave this chump right where he belongs; giving Iggy bad advice.

Posted by: Robert McClelland at January 30, 2009 8:29 PM

I agree with Kate.

Special K made a career out of branding others as racist and playing "gotcha politics". Now his own virtues are biting him in the ass...

I hope he loses his job. I feel no pity for his family if he does, as they, themselves have benefited from his games. Do you think the chicken they're eating tonight was bought with Warren's purity? I feel no shame in reveling at the thought that they very same vile system he helped create may now take him down. Justice will be served and served well if that happens, and, if it does, I'll head over to the flea and dance...

Re Kathy's points, I agree, to a degree. The PC crap sucks and shouldn't exist. That said, we need libtard help to get rid of it and that won't happen until a few more of them get stung...

Posted by: Richard Evans at January 30, 2009 8:31 PM

I think he should be fired simply because he's an ass and I don't like him. He's the blogosphere's number one arse for dragging people into court, or the HRC.

I will light a Macanudo and sip a whisky-sour in celebration if he ends up kicking his lunch pail down the road.

My take, K-man has done nothing wrong. Zero. He printed words on the internet. A lame-o joke. That's nothing.

And because he's done exactly nothing, he should get NAILED TO THE WALL in exactly the same fashion as others have been nailed to the wall by him and his buddies in the anti-hate industry.

Perhaps the object lesson of seeing one of their own nailed up will instill a molecule of common sense into his fellow morons.

The K-man himself, I do not think he comprehends the gravity of his situation. Probably doesn't know what TV show that's a quote from, either. You cannot teach a stone to polka.

Tune in next week when Kinsella goes to an Italian restaurant and shows his culturally-sensitive side by blogging about how it must be run by the mafia.

Then tune in 2 days later as the post disappears, and new posts gushing about his many Italian friends.

But on a serious note, David Akin mentioned that Kinsella apologised. Is there any truth to that? No link was available. Anyone?...

Posted by: Mike514 at January 30, 2009 9:06 PM

Really, the less said about iggy thingie the better.
Don't give any attention to it at all.
Just let the aggrieved parties pursue their complaint if they want.

Shit disturbers are energy vampires.
They feed on attention.
Any attention is good attention.
That is all they understand.

I read that blog every day when it seemed sensible, for a while.
And then I realized I was feeding the monster with my hits.
I don't feed the monster anymore.
Call it a new year's resolution.

Posted by: Gerry Smith at January 30, 2009 9:06 PM

Last year, Liberal MP Raymond Chan wrote a news release calling for the removal of Conservative MP Alice Wong because of her "extreme views," including her ties with a family values association: "Significant evidence has surfaced of (Alice Wong's) extreme views on refugees, the environment and the rights of women." Chan described "the Canadian Alliance for Social Justice and Family Values Association," which Alice Wong donated money to, as "an extreme fundamentalist organization." He declaimed, "It is intolerable that any individual seeking public office would provide financial support for such extreme activities."

Extreme. "A number of Alice Wong's...extreme views recently became public," he said. Example: "(she)...called the Kyoto Protocol 'a great lie.'" This, in the context of his demand for her resignation.

He also considered Alice Wong's refusal to publicly recant her non-LPC views a self-evident outrage which necessitated her removal as a candidate: "On Friday Sept. 26th 2008," Chan wrote, "Ms. Wong was quoted as saying that 'her positions on the questions of same-sex marriage and abortion had never changed.'"

"Either Alice Wong must do the honourable thing and resign," said Liberal MP Raymond Chan, "or Stephen Harper himself needs to remove her as a candidate."

See, the job requirement for being a Liberal staffer or MP or part of the Liberal "team" includes not only constant expressions of faux outrage when people from other parties don't hold the LPC's own views, but also demands for the firing/resignation of such offenders.

By their own massively self-righteous standards, Kinsella should be out the door. He has gone to ridiculous lengths to excoriate others for their putative "racism," and whenever he has done so, nasty partisanship is always the propellant. So if, while he's an advisor to the Liberal-PM-in-waiting, he blithely floats -- writes publicly, AND publishes a vanity-vid of him repeating the slur -- one of the most pernicious racist slurs extant he should be fired for abject stupidity if nothing else. .

This isn't a freedom of speech issue in the slightest degree. It's about the organization he represents, and in this case, the organization he represents shamelessly excoriates non-racists and non-misogynists for racism and misogyny for no other reasons than partisan advantage and to draw public funds to their supporters' hands.

In the same way that you don't get fired for cheating on your wife unless, say, you're an ordained minister, and you don't get fired for playing defense for the Calgary Flames unless you're an Edmonton Oiler, you shouldn't necessarily be fired for making a racist slur -- unless you're an advisor to a Liberal leader, in which case, there's no redeemable excuse.

Kinsella's toast, IMO.

BTW, if an adviser to Stephen Harper had made the identical comment, and published it on a blog, do you think it wouldn't be all over CBC/CTV/the Star, etc etc? This is just one more piece of evidence of the pure hypocrisy of the chattering bureaucrat-journos.

I can't understand how this sophmoronic fifty-something adviser to the Liberal party (past and present) can engender the comments posted here. Everyone of you understands that the prime directive for being a Liberal is "Don't do as I do, do as I tell you!" This latest escapade of WK is just another of untold and innumerable examples.

Posted by: Antenor at January 30, 2009 10:11 PM

I think if you put 5 paragraphs of "everyone who disagrees with me is a racist for various other reasons, and therefore are not credible" in front of your weak appology, it is not an appology. Either you are sorry you said it, or you are not.

Kathy is right in this case. She dishes it, she takes it, but Warren sues for it.

In one of her posts, Kathy made some one-off comment about mythical small pox blankets. I was shocked by it. I liked her less because of it. But that is the beauty of free speech. She says something I don't like, and the consequence is that I like her less, or not at all. Kinsella insists on trying to make that choice for everyone through threats and lawsuits. He would love to be the hall monitor for what we are allowed to hear and read.

I'd rather have a whole country full of Kathy, and whatever crap she is dishing out than one more sanctimonious crybaby like Kinsella.

And Steyn is now calling him Catsmeat and that is funny...

Warren is, by the title of his book alone, one seriously arrogant dude.

If Iggy has any class at all, he will cut WK loose and hire someone equally nasty and arrogant - it is, after all, the Liberal way of doing business.

Posted by: Honey Pot at January 31, 2009 5:35 AM

I have to disagree with Kathy's perspective on her website about Warren and Damian's about Warren not not being censured about his comment because of freedom to say whatever you stupidly feel you have too. The difference in a truly civilized society with regard to these kind of comments is context. While you can argue whether there is any proper context for off-based comments or not, there are definitely contexts when such comments may be inappropriate. This is one for Warren, and he should be appropriately dealt with for it. There is a place when being a stupid boor can fit. Warren has no sense of this. He is a boor 24/7, and as such has no business in am arena in which individual lives can be so profoundly impacted.

Posted by: Alistair Macfarlane at January 31, 2009 9:40 AM

At the time of his Barney stunt, my impression of WK was S3 - smirking, smarmy, smart-*ss. I thought his gag was petty and juvenile. What's up with making fun of people's religious beliefs on national TV? Would you be inclined to vote for a party that insulted you for your beliefs? He wouldn't dare do that with a muslim or hindu politician. It's not as though Reform were going to institute a law making us all go to evangelical church on Sunday. My opinion of him has not changed - the older he gets, the more pathetic he becomes, desperately clinging to his ever receding youth.

Posted by: skeptic at January 31, 2009 9:54 AM

I'm surprised that no one has suggested taking WK's band name -- you know the swear word named washed up punk band -- and redoing it in Mandarin or Cantonese. Or suggesting that he adopt the old Bill the Cat from the Opus comic strip as some sort of medieval sack cloth penance schtick.

Where's Alfonso Cashbagliano when you need him?

Posted by: Manitoba Moose at January 31, 2009 10:36 AM

The HRC's still exist and will continue to exist for a long time despite their hatefulness. WK believes in them, supports them and promotes their use. Therefore, he should be subject to them like everyone else.
Though it's unlikely to happen, because HRC's pick and choose their victims, it would be sweet revenge if someone at least brought a charge against him. That would put the HRC's in another difficult position and be a huge embarrassment to him. It would also give this story added legs and would not be ignored by at least some in the MSM.

Eastern Canada believes that the LPC must remain the Natural Governing Party. Witness its proclivity to hiring puerile spokesmen, advisors, speech-writers of the ilk of Scott Reid (Beer & Popcorn), Scott Feschuk (who had PMPM pontificate how the allies invaded Norway twice in a speech) and WK who haunts toilet stalls with his Polaroid while eating his cat & rice takeouts. Just 3 little examples of many.

The main stream media assumes all is well. The Natural Governing Party must not be shown in anything but a favorable light, so gaffes, insults and calumnies must always be glossed over or ignored.

TG for blogs, particularly SDA.

Posted by: Alienated at January 31, 2009 1:41 PM

Well, wouldn't be surprised if one of the media hacks is reporting Kinsella apologized. Akin and the rest of the media really have no interest in covering this because LIBERAL Kinsella is one of their buddies.
On the other hand, if it were said by Conservative it would be plastered all over the print media front pages and on all "newscasts' for days.

If Kinsella has apologized, who to, where and when did he do it?

Posted by: Liz J at January 31, 2009 2:01 PM

I remember well how a twenty-year old tape of Tom Litewski joking around at a party was all over The National. It was a "crisis" for the Conservatives, a national outrage of the highest order, and a grossly injurious slur against to gays and lesbians -- and all decent Canadians.

I have, right here in my hand, a shiny new nickel for the first commenter who finds mention of Ignatieff advisor Catmeat's slur on The National. Or on any of CTV's broadcasts.

We all know what the coverage would be if it was Stephen Harper's advisor -- we're talking wallpaper. Why the complete, utter and in-your-face hypocrisy? If they're not going to cover it, they should at least explain the double standard -- "well, you see, that was a Conservative, eh? We don't want to harm Ignatieff or the Liberals, so that makes this a completely different situation..."

Posted by: EBD at January 31, 2009 3:12 PM

Send e-mails to Ignatieff's office and demand Kinsella be fired. His comment was way over the top. Will the HRC of Ontario take action?

Posted by: MJH at January 31, 2009 3:34 PM

"If Kinsella has apologized, who to, where and when did he do it?" He did it obscurely in a Chinese language article on his web site, but he did it the WK way: First, attack Conservatives with some 8 year old gaffe, then rant on and finally the apology came as a footnote. Right, a footnote. All this was in Chinese with the English translation concealed in his comments section. Not very sincere in my opinion.

EDB, thanks for bringing the Lukiwski incident to our recall. The media were a total disgrace on that one. Great example of the double standard according to which Party one belongs to.

The media will scurry to cover for the likes of Kinsella's "gaffes" with the fury of a cat trying to cover sh*t on a tin roof.

WK is a Liberal. Liberals think they are green. PETA thinks they are green. WK in self identifying with PETA was referring to "Sea Kittens" to show his caring and sensitivity. He had no idea it could possibly be interpreted as him being non sufficiently breast fed as a child thus requiring a gnawing need for attention.

New name for WK:

He shouldn't lose his job over this and i don't want him to - he's much more useful to the CP where he is now. like the manchurian candidate we will supply the code words that trigger his implosion at the best point in time that will cause the most damage to his sith leader Iggy.

Regardless of WK, The NYTimes likes what it sees in Iggy.

Ironic the story is found in the fashion section.

It is obvious that Iggy should hire a spokesman who is more sensitive to the Asian community--like Rosie O'Donnell.

The story made page A8 of today's Edmonton Journal, so it has progressed beyond the blogosphere, at least in Edmonton, which surprises me since the Journal is a Liberal mouthpiece. It should have been on the front page below the fold, but I guess that's expecting a bit too much.

It's a strange conceit of some on the political left that they are beyond charges of racism and sexism. Thus they are shocked when they are called upon the carpet for such things as the clearly misogynist insults that were aimed at Sarah Palin.

JanieG-M has this posted.

>>>> "and the Harper Conservatives made sure the national media was aware of it as well." Janie said cattily.

>>>> "Ignatieff senior strategist Warren Kinsella"

Can we get the "cat meat" into the fire? The frying pan is not good enough. Fire. Him. All.

"HOT, NOT AND AN APOLOGY An Apology: Ignatieff senior strategist Warren Kinsella apologized this week for offending "friends in the Chinese community" for suggesting a Chinese restaurant in Ottawa served "cat meat." The reference appeared on Mr. Kinsella's blog, and it wasn't long before it was picked up by the Chinese press. The Toronto Chapter of the Chinese Canadian National Council demanded an apology and the Harper Conservatives made sure the national media was aware of it as well. Mr. Kinsella has written books opposing racism. He removed the remark: "I sincerely and unreservedly apologize," he said."

breaking news !

my sources in Ottawa tell me the Yang Sheng restaurant has created a special entree to mark their coming award for "Culinary Excellence in Multicultural Cuisine"!

it's called "dim fuk dum gai" which to my understanding translates to 'gravy train pass me by"....hmmmph...parse the meaning of THAT if you can...VERY inscrutable indeed.

anyway...the meal consists of and i quote from the menu..

"'rump of horse marinated in 30 yr. old sleaze then stir fried in a WoK with cornpone Croutons rubbed with a reduced pepsi and poutine paste....then served up in a trough with a double dipping sauce on the side."

oddest damn thing....a footnote under all this says payment for this meal can ONLY be made with cash in a brown paper bag.....

i dunno what to make of that mesself...but it IS ottawa as i mentioned earlier and these Celestials are damned inscrutable.

Update from Ezra Levant re Ad$Cam, er Catscam, a Production of/by the Librano$.

"Cat-astrophe!

I see that Catscam has broken into the mainstream English-language press, big-time.

Here's a sampling:

The National Post (online); The Globe and Mail (not hot!); Ottawa Citizen (and Nanaimo News); Calgary Herald (Chinese population of Calgary: approx. 100,000); and Saskatoon (with a photo of Kinsella, with a Cheshire cat smile!).

But my favourite has to be the Liberal party's pundit, Robert Silver, who wrote about Catscam in the Globe thusly:

...his post was in no ways racist or even offensive -- at all.

Um, war room, call your office."

Does this mean Kinsella is actually a member of PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals ?

Probably means he'll never score with Pamela Anderson.

One fetish dream less for the disgraced Liberal Ass Kicker to have to worry about.

Kinsellout should take his act out on the road!

Being familiar with Marshall, and Boogie amps set on 10, this rough and ready lifestyle/badass attitude is well "served" by his returning to his (ginger)roots. I'd be happy to rent him the gear he'd need! LOL

Warren, we'd miss you here though....carry on.

Posted by: eastern paul at January 31, 2009 11:04 PM

Fred is right. Where is PETA?

I do believe Coleslaw has commited a hate crime against cats. Animal cruelty at the very least.

Felines are a protected group at the human rights commission.

Robert has a Homer Simpson moment. G&M

Robert Silver from Toronto, Canada writes:

But of course folks are trying to turn this into some kind of a political issue and that's where I step in.

Anyways, tomorrow's the superbowl and by Monday am this story will have had its 5 minutes.

Okay, let's look at the political landscape now. The Liberals still have the muslim, aboriginal and newfie votes ... while the Conservatives have the Chinese vote now. Toronto and Vancouver should be solid Conservative seats come the next election thanks to WKs indiscretionary comment about the Chinese serving up cat meat in their restaurants.

The RoC need not know anything, but the Chinese-Canadian community must certainly be aware of the WK-Ignatieff insult to them.

This story will soon be dead, Iggy has probably sent his Puffin brigade out to bury it with the rest of their poop.

Warren is getting a taste of his own medicine in the blogosphere and I'm sure Garfield is not amused, but that's where it ends.

I hope he loses his job. I hope he's humiliated and becomes despondent and universally despised. I hope his kids spit on him and his wife dumps him for another woman. I hope he gets gigantic festering hemorrhoids.

But if by some chance he gets haled before the HRC, as sweet as it would be to watch, I'd send him $20 for his defence. Nobody deserves to be prosecuted by the state for speaking improperly.

Well OK, I wouldn't send him any money, but I'd be aware that he was being wronged. Well, even then I wouldn't really worry about it.

Well, actually I would gloat and laugh. I would find it very hard to find any sympathy for him whatsoever. I would cheer for the HRC. Just this once.

Actually, I feel like filing a complaint against him myself. Screw 'im.
