I have a modest proposal to end the Gaza standoff once and for all, that does not involve killing all the Gazans.
Why don't Bill Gates and George Soros pool a few of their billions of dollars and buy Gaza. Then they could re-settle the Gazans in Aceh Banda in Indonesia, where they would fit right in with their brand of islam (that area is short 100,000+ in population as a result of the tsunami). There is a lot of uninhabited coastal land there that would make ideal pirate bases.
Then the Gates/Soros enterprise could offer free land in Gaza to up to 100,000 illegal immigrants from the States and settle them there. I'm sure that they would make ideal settlers; hard-working and industrious, and they would probably be good neighbours to the Israelis, who might give them an initial lift up by restoring the greenhouses and irrigation systems that were destroyed by Hamas.
I think that it would be an ideal solution to a seemingly intractable problem.

Had they not thought their strategy through? Not made any contingency plans? The Israelis provided their exit strategy.

Hey, I'm 53, and I haven't had a premature detonation for 20 years, even though I've wanted to a few times.

It shouldn't be a big surprise that Hamas' bravado was short-lived. That's the nature of their personalities. Remember Saddam's "mother of all wars"? The resolve and bravery of the Islamists has always been over estimated. History doesn't support any of their claims. No Vimy Ridge in their history. No D-day, no London Blitz, no Stalingrad, no Midway, No Gettysburg. Only the 6 day war, and on the losing side.

During 1978, I was a Peacekeeping trooper in the Mid-East. The IDF forces were so superior to the Egyptian troops it was obvious why the always outnumbered IDF rolled over the Arab forces.

Although the IDF are essentially amateurs (90%+ are reservists) they acted more like a professional army on 11 months leave! They wore their uniforms and web gear as if they were ready for action at anytime. They carried their small arms (M16's, FN-FAL's, Uzis) in a professional manner unlike the Egyptian army soldiers who would literally drag their AK 47's and SKS rifle butts on the ground behind them. IDF equipment always looked well maintained and organized whereas the Egyptian army's equipment always looked like it need a good cleaning and simple repair ( eg flat tires on several 122mm guns).

The IDF is a well trained, well disciplined and well lead force. I suspect the Hamas forces and their attached allied units are closer to a rabble. The dead giveaway? Video of "Happy Fire", a street mob with several Hamas fighters firing their AK 47 assault rifles into the air. How many of the reported Gaza casualties are from those 110 grain bullets dropping back to earth?

Having a premature detonation is bad enough when you're with someone, but when you're by yourself? Sheesh!
