As we await the first day of spring...

And the re-melting of the polar ice caps...

Think of it as your own personal Earth Hour.

Let me be the first to say...
Wowzers!!!!!!
Hope you win tomorrow Kate.
Everybody get out and vote early - vote often tomorrow.
Yes we can!!!!!!
Posted by: Rick in MB at January 13, 2009 12:08 AMI so love that bike in black.
Posted by: ward at January 13, 2009 12:12 AMJust checked th poll as of about 9:15. A pure dead heat at 12,962 for both SDA and ACE. SDA has the Mo.
Posted by: ward at January 13, 2009 12:16 AMNow THIS is an poll worth watching! Much more exciting!
Posted by: Doogie at January 13, 2009 12:17 AM2-stroke? That's pure evil.
Posted by: dp at January 13, 2009 12:20 AMAs of 1/13 12:18 AM EST, SDA is behind Ace of Spades BY TWO MEASLY VOTES, 12,700 to 12,702!
C'mon SDA Surfers, fix bayonets and over the top!
Posted by: Dave in Pa. at January 13, 2009 12:22 AMJust voted for Kate and SDA is one vote behind.
Someone get in there.
As of 1/13 12:28 AM, SDA is AHEAD, 12,733 to Ace of Spade's 12,731. Get out that Lee-Enfield .303 with 12" of cold steel and Give Hell to the Hun! (Pardonnez-moi mes metaphors...watched an old WW1 movie tonight :-)
Posted by: Dave in Pa. at January 13, 2009 12:33 AMCan I vote again from my laptop? I'm somewhat inept when it comes to this wireless stuff.
Posted by: dp at January 13, 2009 12:45 AMAce's commenters are coaching other commenters on how to cheat -- how to vote multiple times. That's unacceptable. They must be stopped.
Posted by: EBD at January 13, 2009 12:45 AM10:00pm PDT - SDA is just 23 votes behind.
This is getting exciting but I need to know, who's Al Franken and who's Norm Coleman?!?
P.S. Doesn't this prove (he says with a smile on his face) that there are WAY more dedicated conservatives in Canada nowadays than in Obamaland???
Posted by: Robert W. at January 13, 2009 1:01 AMNice tips.
Posted by: Bernie at January 13, 2009 1:22 AMHopefully the midnight shift will show up to do some heavy lifting for you.
Gotta love that 2 stroke smoke, makes me want to run a little diesel in my car and idle it in the no idle zone in front of silly hall.Im goin to bed, my mornin starts at 6,cheers and good luck Kate, love your blog.
"Ace's commenters are coaching other commenters on how to cheat -"
yeah, they've been coaching each other how to vote multiple times within the comments this evening. This explains their sudden surge ahead again.
Posted by: ChrisinMB at January 13, 2009 1:32 AM"they've been coaching each other how to vote multiple times within the comments this evening."
Since they're so good at rigging the votes I say they should be moved over to the best liberal blog with all the other democrats.
Posted by: Phil at January 13, 2009 1:37 AMdp said "Can I vote again from my laptop?"
I voted from my laptop, my desktop, pulled out an old laptp and desktop, and voted from those as well.
Posted by: Sarge (not the idiot troll) at January 13, 2009 1:38 AM"Every Time You Vote For SDA, Al Gore Cries."
I dunno Kate. Looks to me like instead of crying, his way of dealing with upset is to stuff another donut in his big fat cakehole...
Posted by: Soccermom at January 13, 2009 2:02 AMCome on Kate - I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see a better picture of our Saskatchewan goddess.
These small, low rez pictures don't do you justice. Don't go all shy on us. Give us more!
Posted by: No Guff at January 13, 2009 2:07 AMKate, I am not sure why you didn't include this pic alongside your trophy in the truck pic? Is that your varmint gun? I'll bet you could shoot the center right out of a playing card with that one... perhaps the Ace of Spades?

More revs, more smoke, NO mufflers, 1/4 cup of Rislone in the tank +more votes!! That puppie has another 20 HP screaming to come out!
C'mon guys! How you gonna get a sweater pick (Tank top better, but thats my fantasy, don't kill it) on Aretha unless she wins???
That would do more for global warming than smoke up Suezucci's butt.
(a hoody draped over the tank doesn't count!)
Posted by: G at January 13, 2009 4:45 AMBoy-o-boy, waiting for 24 hours to elapse so I can vote for SDA again is like, is like... waiting for Christmas!! I'm so exited!
Anyway, here's my personal contribution to global warming:
http://canadianstreetcar.com/cscgallery/displayimage.php?album=10&pos=226
We're behind you all the way Kate! (and if the smoke wasn't so thick, I'd say it's a pretty good view from there!)
That's it girl, I've voted as much as I can so at 13,101 and only 81 short of Ace, it is up to the rest of y'all to get voting.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at January 13, 2009 6:28 AM"they've [over at Ace of Spades] been coaching each other how to vote multiple times within the comments this evening."
Shouldn't that automatically disqualify Ace of Spades? Hmmm ... 2008weblogawards administrators ... what about it?
Way to go, Kate.
Note to Daniel: Scroll down. One of the other threads here has a photo of Kate in her truck with trophy.
Posted by: batb at January 13, 2009 6:58 AMAs this is the last day and the polls close at 5:00 p.m., I was hoping on could vote any time past midnight today.
I'm not eligible to vote until after I'll be out this morning and I'm not likely to be back to my computer--no computer access today--until after 5:00. That's a problem!
Go, Kate!
P.S. I agree with batb. If he's counselling cheating, Ace should be disqualified. If he isn't officially, he certainly is in spirit. Too bad he's that kind of competitor.
Posted by: lookout at January 13, 2009 7:34 AMI've expended all my voting resources.
Reminds me of Matt Damon in the climactic battle in Saving Private Ryan as he and Tom Hanks are burrowed in a crater and as he empties his last carbine he shouts: "I'm out!"
Speaking of that movie, we could use some 'angels on our shoulders'
Posted by: PhilM at January 13, 2009 8:12 AMAlas, Kate - I only have access to one computer down here in Peru. I get to vote for the last time at 2 PM.
Fingers crossed and touching wood. My Peruvian colleagues are wondering what the hell I'm up to.
Posted by: jlc at January 13, 2009 8:13 AMKate - is that rice I see below the crank case? Oil leak perhaps? You need a Harley, girl!
Posted by: a different bob at January 13, 2009 8:18 AMI can't vote until 4:00 pm Kate (the 24 thingy seems to work very efficiently).
Hope I can get through to help late in the day.
By the way the bike you had stolen in the western USA a couple years back, did you ever recover it?
Just wondering.
Gawd, I love that blue smoke. Ring a ding ding ding ding, RRRRRIng ding ding...
different bob, RDs and RZs eat Harleys for breakfast. Once upon a time on the QEW I was passed in the fast lane by some genius biker gang type on a Harley. Passed me on the left going like 90 mph. Thought he was going to scare the goofy rice rider with his mean ol' Harley and open pipes.
I gave him a little room to gloat, dropped a gear and blew past him at 120. MPH. On the left. And waved hasta la vista in my rearview. Sweet.
Eat blue smoke. ~:D Bwahaha!
Posted by: The Phantom at January 13, 2009 9:05 AMBob, why on earth would she, or anyone, want a Harley?
Made that mistake once, quickly went back to a real motorcycle from Honda!!
Phantom, I always thought of the two stroke of more a ninnnnnng ning ning ning ning. Some people love the smell of napalm in the morning, for me it the smell of a two stroke. Raw, HOLD ON power!!!
Good luck today oh mistress of the web!!
Can you post a link to your "Sound of Settled Science" series? If people are driving by your website to check you out, that series would get their votes.
Posted by: Kyla at January 13, 2009 9:14 AM""Ace's commenters are coaching other commenters on how to cheat -"
A few did chastise them, but this is not the first day of comments like that.
If cheating garners them Victory, I hope it makes them very proud.
Can't help but notice they make the greatest strides in the middle of the night.
I hope the Weblog people are paying attention.
My dad always told me to take the high road because it has less traffic most times.
Posted by: jim at January 13, 2009 9:32 AMCheaters? Wouldn't that be a violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement?
Posted by: texan at January 13, 2009 9:44 AMHey - I didn't wait thirty years while my family was growing and gone only to sit in the saddle of a rice rocket. Got me a 2003 Heritage Softail Classic. I didn't get it so I could be stupid going 120 mph. I got it so that I'd finally have something big and awesome between my legs while still feeling I was in a rocking chair.
Love that Harley!
Posted by: a different bob at January 13, 2009 9:49 AMFact remains bob, I can be stupid at 120. You can only be stupid at like 90. Actually, I can be stupid all the way up to 150mph. And have done. It was keen!
Plus, on a Harley blue smoke is a bug. On an RZ, its a FEATURE! ~:D
Posted by: The Phantom at January 13, 2009 10:02 AMPhantom - this is not meant personally but I only go about 60mph on my "rocking chair". If you go 120 on your rice burner that just might make you twice as stupid as me. Actually when I think motor cycles and speed I am constantly reminded of a series of pics I saw on the net showing the dismembered body of a guy who had been going some 300 km/hr when he whiped out. Now THAT was really stupid. At 60mph a guy has somewhat of a chance but at 120mph I don't like your chances at all.
Posted by: a different bob at January 13, 2009 10:55 AMEverytime I pull up next to a Harley on my Honda I ask them "How do you get this thing out of first gear"? They allways give me the finger as I leave them in the dust. HAHAHA
My Honda was built in 74 and still runs like it just rolled off the showroom floor. The longest life bikes on the planet.
Posted by: FREE at January 13, 2009 11:10 AMWhen I get the need for speed, I'll try to get a ride in the back of a jet fighter or a NASCAR-For-Dummies car at Daytona.
Bob's idea of a mobile rocking chair works for me. Seen a lot of boomers strapping on the leathers to go out for a coffee on a weekend afternoon. Sort of beats pulling bugs out of your store bought teeth after spending time all humped over a rice burner.
Victory makes a decent set of American Iron.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at January 13, 2009 11:11 AMI know a fellow in Iowa that has wiped out so many times that he and the doctor that resets his head are on a first name basis. His motor cost $75,000 to modify. He wont wear a helmet.I,m not saying that he's smart, only excedingly lucky.Owns a FORD F150 Lightning also which he put into the bush and owes his life to the air bag but won't admit it.
Posted by: spike 1 at January 13, 2009 11:16 AMI did my duty. Over the top with fixed bayonets every chance I was allowed. One hell of a fight. Blood everywhere.
It took about 40 tries, but I finally managed to get in today's vote. Good luck, Kate.
Posted by: Charles MacDonald at January 13, 2009 11:53 AMI've come home for lunch: the weather's MUCH better than predicted. (How the he** can they "predict" "climate change" when they can't even get it accurate in a four hour period? One would think the morons on the left could figure this one out.)
I STILL can't vote for SDA, though I won't be home until after 5:00. As I said, everyone should be able to vote--once--on the last day at any time before 5:00.
Posted by: lookout at January 13, 2009 12:20 PMKate makes a comment about "repacking a muffler" and none of you jump on the chance to make some sick twisted innuendo? What kind of blog is this?

Posted by: Dodgy Geezer at January 13, 2009 12:53 PMTexas, the reason you see guys lying on the tank of their rice burner is... POWER! BWAHAHA!!!!
Grab a handful on a two stroke, you -better- be lying on the tank or you're going to do a major moonshot. They don't call 'em rockets for nothing, eh? Kate's picture illustrates the approved position.
Also, bees are painful at high speed. WHACK!!! Ow! Keeping behind the wee tiny little fairing is prudence. Face shield down, oh yeah.
The hawg kind of snorts its way forward, which is fine for a tractor or an armchair.
Frankly, having ridden across several provinces on a "cruiser" (it was a pig, but not a Hawg) and also on my rice rocket, I find the racing position MUCH more comfortable and easy on the back. There's a boatload of kinesiology to back that up, but I know I'll only get FLAMED by all the cruiser riders. Flames are a sign of incomplete combustion, y'know. ~:D
To each his own. May the spirit of Charley Ferguson smile upon your next ride.
Posted by: The Phantom at January 13, 2009 1:06 PMHere's a couple just for you, Jose.
Kate, please forgive me.
"Now that is some nice muffler"
"I love packing mufflers"
I could keep going, but they generally go downhill from there. Out of respect for Kate I'll stop there.
Posted by: Trevor at January 13, 2009 1:15 PMI've got a ZX-11 I haven't rode in years, perhaps I should take one final ride on it this spring & hand it over to Kate. Maybe get some custom paint work done in exchange...

Posted by: rzr at January 13, 2009 1:59 PMAbout smoke producing...
Take a look at this from CFCF-12/CTV-Montreal
( Emphasis/bold characters in original )
... ... ... ... ...
Winter-smog warning
The City of Montreal is appealing to the public to help ease winter smog.
A smog alert was issued Monday, primarily affecting the city's east end.
The major culprits are wood burning stoves and fireplaces
A city official wants Montrealers to find other ways to heat their homes.
Another other major culprit are all those idling vehicles.
... ... ...
So if we were to follow the Greenie's advice and return to the "old ways" ( horses and camp fires et cetera...)
we would still be producing smog
interesting...
