I really like xiat's third prediction - it's something I have been thinking about for sometime.

Perhaps this massive intervention by governments and its nil to negative impact will finally disabuse the public of the idea that government can meddle in the economy and get good results.

This is an idea that goes back to the fdr new deal which is still largely and erroneously believed to be the means by which the world got out of the depression. While many have proven it not to be the case most including all of the democratic leadership believe it did and that will work now.

If however as xiat predicts, the policy fails and the emperor is revealed to have no clothes, we could the extinguishing of the greatest left-wing myth extant. Could the second biggest myth - agw - be close behind in its demise ?

Re: Gord Tulk @ 11:54

It may take more then a year, but the process of revolutionary changes of social organization has started somewhere along introduction of network communication. It revealed that big centralized top-down linear structures are poorly designed to deal with complex issues. They are slow, reactionary, unable to cope with multiple and often contradictory inputs. For good or for bad the name of the future is fragmentation, it may bring decision making to the spectrum where only affected have the vote (and veto), it may bring local tyrannies and for sure as any transformation it will result in numerous conflicts. Whatever happen after is yet to be seen, but massive industrial type democracy must fade away. Information technology renders it obsolete.

You know, the future belongs to the gods because the future operates in the realm of the virtual which is a realm completely indifferent to time, while we, alas, are confined to the realm of the actual, a realm trapped within time.

The ancient Greeks understood these two worlds very well, and the necessity to keep the people of each (gods and men) reasonably separate. It must be admitted that the gods, who seem to feel no shame, meddled in the affairs of men quite often. Whether they did this out of spite or malice, curiosity about the realm of men or boredom with their own, we cannot know.

Equally, the realm of men have made their own attempts at contact, or even, hesitant entrance, to the realm of the virtual. The natives of both America and Africa used hallucinogenic herbs, but with caution, for they warned the user that, if you stepped too far into the other world, its inhabitants might be alarmed, and might grab and hold you for eternity.

Trance dances, sacrifices, prayers, visions - the attempts to make contact are endless. But just imagine what would happen if we mortals or those gods actually opened wide the doors of each realm and allowed full and free access to both worlds. What would happen if actual time and virtual time confronted each other? Would we move into a state of permanent vertigo, not knowing whether we were 'here' or 'there'? Would the future go into a sulk and cease to exist because it was now linked to the present, which is the realm of men, and no longer had the freedom to choose to be different?

The 2008 predictions that were made by the fascistic winged monkeys were all way off the mark. The only one that was bang-on was the prediction Obama would win and the Iran pull-out would begin, and that people would rejoice. If they are supposed to be rejoicing about Obama, that's a fairly accurate prediction. So far, his approval ratings are pretty high. Arguably the election (and the Depression that Mensa Kate continues to deny) were the big news in 2008.

As for next year, I've got predictions on my blog.

2. Canada will stay fiscally stronger than most or all other G8 countries. There will be some pain, but nothing out of the ordinary as with any other recession that cycles through our economy every decade or so.

3. Nothing other than the usual rhetoric will occur in the Middle East or between India and Pakistan (It is after all a cash cow). There will be terrorist attacks, but nothing unusual by today’s standards. Something big may happen out of North Korea.

2010 will start to see some economic improvement and some real terror on the Muslim front.

I must admit other than the EURO segment I hit it pretty close for last years predictions. I must admit I do not enjoy that my predictions worked out but they did. Remember last Dec 2008 was rosy and prosperous compared to now. Yikes!!. Nevertheless , happy new year everybody. Things will improve.

1. I am going to carry over my prediction of the EURO being destined as the world standard currency possibly in 2009. Gold, oil , and most commodities have been historically based on the US dollar. The USA will soon step back a bit and endorse this "for the good of the global economy" and "as a gesture to the rest of the world". Obama will announce it.

2. Once Israel ends the Hamas attacks from Gaza , they will pounce on any neighbouring states who try to attack them. So much so that they may expand borders way beyond current Israel to provide a proper buffer zone from future attacks. I am talking about parts of Egypt , Turkey , Jordan , Lebanon, Syria Iraq etc.

3. If Iran ,Hezbollah , or others launch attacks out of Damascus Syria , the city will be obliterated. Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the world.

Sounds like doom and gloom , I know. That is not the intention. The context is to be taken as positive. There will be a time of favor for Israel. Here's hoping . Happy new year to all. Remain positive.

Apologies for my tardiness in submitting predictions; I hope it won’t disqualify me and others from the big prize next year.

1. Ahmadinejad is replaced, Iran’s nuclear program is discontinued and a US/Iran “economic” relationship is established, which frees/forces Syria and Lebanon to suffer along on their own or join the party. This in turn allows Israel to isolate and generally pound the s--t out of Hamas and Hezbollah.
2. One or more European governments will attempt to enact “cultural assimilation” legislation with respect to immigration policy.
3. As a result of 1 and 2 above, radical jihadists will accelerate their, otherwise multi-generational, agenda and perpetrate a major nuclear/biological/chemical panic, if not an actual event.

Bonus prediction (will not be one of the world’s top three news items): Whether as a result of a general election or not, the CPC will continue to govern in the manner of a majority.

1. The economy will coast in the first half, it will begin to improve in second half, in spite of Obama’s doing his utmost to impair it in order to help socialize it.

2. More and more capitalists will cry to the gobmint to give them money.

3. There will be another election, conservatives will improve their position.

Just so you understand, capitalists should enterprise, gobmint should get out of bloody way.

I am not even looking at the rest. Just scrolled down to post mine:
1: Economy gets MUCH better just as soon as Obama takes office. If it does he will get all the credit ( let's remember the numbers coming out now show the economy is not near as bad as the msm want to project, not to say we have not been hit hard in the markets. Dirty doin's there)Congress will screw us over but the markets will get better and the housing will improve, slowly.
And if it does not, Bush will get ALL the blame.
2: Israel will stick to their guns and pound Hamas. Netanyahu gets elected PM.
3:Stephen Harper gets a majority government if we go to the polls. If the libs go along with the NDP and the 'coalition' and they back the budget the Tories might be there for awhile. Bottom Line: Harper and the Tory government will be government for some time to come.

1. Obama will not bring about the 'change' all his voters hoped for, but his followers will still think he can do no wrong (jeez that sounds familiar).
2. Buffalo Bills in Toronto will be a big flop once again because if TO can't care about it's own football team how's it going to care about anyone elses.
3. Amy Whino Winehouse will live to see 2010 but some young and damned good actor/actress will die a meaningless accidental (possibly prescrip drug related) death.
