Losing weight and, more importantly, keeping it off takes work and planning. As someone who originally planned on losing 10 pounds this year but ended up shedding almost 40, let me to offer some hints.

Remember that food is primarily a fuel source and your body needs a wide variety to get the proper nutrients. It is also a source of enjoyment - it tastes good and we share more than a meal when we sit down with family or friends. Don't ban foods, just amounts. Cut back on fats, sugar and starches. I hope you like fruit and veg because they are going to be your very best friends for a while. (A field of broccoli has about 10 calories total, as do cauliflower, bell peppers and celery.) Eat slowly - small bites and chew it well. Put a portion on your plate and don't go back for seconds. Don't eat standing over the sink (that food does have calories, really and truly).

Keep a food diary and record every morsel that you eat. Exercise but very lightly at first; a walk to the corner and back is a good start. Overdoing it will make places you didn't know you had hurt and you won't exercise again.

Resist the temptation to weigh yourself for the first month; loose clothing is a better motivator than numbers that may not be falling as fast as you think they should.

Last of all, and trying to be delicate, once you lose some weight, you will look more appealing to your heart of hearts and you will have a little more, um, energy, if you know what I mean.

We need to get rid of scales and mirrors - they're just remnants of the reality era.

My wife has an inactive thyroid and she takes prescription medicine to compensate. According to the Domesday Book census in 1086, 10% of England's population was enslaved.[4] The trade in serfs and slaves in England was abolished in 1102.[5][6] The legal force of the event is actually open to question. The Council of Westminster, a collection of nobles, issued a decree: "Let no one hereafter presume to engage in that nefarious trade in which hitherto in England men were usually sold like brute animals." However, the Council had no legislative powers, and no act of law was valid unless signed by the monarch.[citation needed] The last form of enforced servitude (villeinage) had disappeared in Britain by the beginning of the 17th century.

Slavery resurfaced in that century as a form of punishment against Catholics. As many as 100,000 Irish men, women and children were forcibly taken to the colonies in the British West Indies and British North America as indentured servants after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.[7] In the 17th century, slavery was used as punishment by conquering English Parliament armies against native Catholics in Ireland. Between the years 1659 and 1663, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland by the New Model Army, under the command of Oliver Cromwell, thousands of Irish Catholics were forced into servitude. Cromwell had a deep dislike of the Catholic religion, and many Irish Catholics who had participated in Confederate Ireland had all their land confiscated and were transported to the British West Indies as indentured servants.

In the same period Oliver Cromwell shipped Romanichal Gypsies as slaves from England, Wales and Scotland to the American southern plantations [8] and there is documentation of English Gypsies being owned by freed black slaves in Jamaica, Barbados and in both Cuba and Louisiana. Occasionally, Scottish Highlanders and other Scotsmen were forcibly taken and transported abroad at this time. The need for labour in the Virginia plantations and West Indies encouraged planters and their agents to "press gang" unwary or naïve locals onto ships, bound for the Americas. Once at their destination, these people were indentured to plantation owners against their will. They were released eventually, unlike Africans similarly employed. It is also on record that a considerable number of Highland Jacobite supporters, who had been captured in the aftermath of Culloden and subsequently the rigorous Government sweeps of the Highlands to root out Jacobite fugitives and transgressors of the new laws against Highland culture itself, languished in fetid prison hulks on the River Thames for months, until sentenced to transportation to the Carolinas as indentured servants/slaves.
