“At first I didn’t believe it,” says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. “This finding fundamentally alters our understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction.”"Earth’s Magnetic Field Has Massive Breach - scientists baffled"
First we have the interplanetary magnetic field that took an abrupt dive in October 2005 and has not recovered since and remains at very low level:Then we have the recent discovery that the ionosphere has dropped in altitude to unexpected and unexplained low levels.
We have a solar cycle 24 (driven by the solar magnetic dynamo) which can’t seem to get out of the starting gate, being a year late with forecasts for activity from it being revised again and again.
And finally we have this, this discovery that Earth’s magnetic field can be ripped open and our atmosphere laid bare to the solar wind, much like Mars.
What's a poor Greenie to do now? Do we slap on a new solar tax so we can construct a shield around the planet. Or perhaps we shut down all forms of electronic communication and any other device that produces magnetic fields...like electric motors or generators. I mean, it must be obvious to everyone that this is a manmade phenomena. Let's see, we can all go back to commuting by horse and buggy which eliminates all those alternators in vehicles. If we return to using candles for lighting we can do away with those harmful electrical generating stations.
Someone get on the phone, while they still operate, and contact David Suzuki or Elizabeth May. I'm sure they will have an answer as to how we destructive humans can gain control over the sun...starting, of course, with massive tax increases and the transfer of wealth to those nations who produce less magnetic fields than we in the west.
Uh , oh , here comes the Yellow Shift .

I thought it seemed breezier than normal the last few days. And what I thought was very fine snow accumulating on the driveway this morning turned out to be individual protons from the solar wind. If those things clog up the snowthrower, I'm going to be really cheesed off.

We all would be better off if the self appointed experts and scientists would stick to computer games and crossword puzzles and stay to hell away from trying to outguess an earthly unknown.
Because that's exactly what it is , humans guessing.
Al Gore, David Suzuki et al and all the rest of you know-it-alls just "shut the F@#K UP"!!
"magnetic offsets" thanks Bill, that made me laugh.
In the meantime -- happy festivus everyone, the holiday for the non-magnetic, what with the aluminum pole and all.
My first thought was "Gee, should I worry about this?" Then I read on and see that things of comparable magnitude happen -all the time-, and I relax. This one's been happening since 2007 and I didn't even notice. That's my kind of non-emergency!
So since there's nothing going on here that matches the overheated rhetoric, "ripped open", "catastrophic" and etc., I'm going with Bill D. Cat's magnetic offsets.

Anyway, I know the point of the post is to show that ideas change and nature continually surprises. What disappointed me on the Watts post was that there was no indication about what this means other than more blackouts and stronger Aurora's.
There is an interesting correlation between solar activity and temp, but it is a loose one, there are exceptions. So applying the same test as I do to CO2 the theory isn't satisfying let alone complete.
Lots of work to be done. But I agree the science isn't settled, to say the least.

What more can be said! It will be interesting on seeing how the religion of Global Warming will spin this to their advantage. Perhaps they will say that this is the reason for the cooling of the earth - the cold comes from space - through the hole. Does that mean we will be deprived of the Northern Lights!! I hope not, it is the only free thing we have left to entertain us.
I will not give up my magnet - I guess we have to regester them next like guns and transportation. Aern't they made in Ontario? I guess that is another blow to the heavly corporate taxed industry. But then, the magnets draw the LIEbrals to the center of the universe.
I wonder if the LIEberal/Non Democradic Party/Bloc will tax us for having then? Time will tell.

Posted by: eyesopen at December 18, 2008 10:32 AMIt's yet another apocalyptic scenario. We go through them rather fast - and the interesting thing is that they are all, somehow or other, related to our human evilness. It's called primoridal sin.
Let's see..a few of the recent ones.
The Cold War was one - where children had to learn to hide under their school desks when The Bomb came.
There was Global Cooling as well.
Oh - and remember Y2K? When the world would stop because we humans forgot to set our computers properly? ah well...
Then, it moved on to AGW, another apocalpyse and caused by humans.
Now, we've got the economic and financial 'crisis' which will also make the world stop spinning. It's caused, we are told, by human greed - and most certainly has nothing to do with global restructuring of economic producers and consumers, bringing in a new middle class from India and China.
This new one, with regard to the interplanetary magnetic field...just wait..its changes will be attributed to humans - must be all those satellites we send up in space to use to guide our car GPS's.
There's nothing like a good apocalypse to bring us all together.

Who's laughing now?
Posted by: Oz at December 18, 2008 10:38 AMI read a scientific paper recently (can't remember where I saw it) that increases in cosmic radiation reaching the earth's lower atmosphere (ie, the troposphere, where weather takes place) because of reduced strength of solar storms (related to sunspot inactivity) show a strong correlation to formation of low level cloud cover, due to ionization in the lower atmosphere. This, in turn, results in less sunlight reaching the earth and has a cooling effect, such as we are now experiencing pretty much worldwide. I imagine that modification of the earth's magnetic shield, for whatever reason, would have a similar effect. As I understand it, there is not much funding available for research in that area.
Posted by: itlog98 at December 18, 2008 10:42 AMThis is going to ruin the bubble gum card industry.
With all that ice melting, there'll be no more hockey. The covered stadiums will get blown over by the solar wind, ruining football, baseball players will get fried due to the hole in the ozone layer, and everytime a soccer player kicks a ball the solar wind will throw it into orbit. The sun will be blocked out by all those orbiting footballs. It's the end of all sports, and that means it's the end of the world.
Comon Flash,, where's Gordon when I need him to save the World.
Our Planet is screwed and we are all going to hell in a hand-basket.

,
Quick everyone idle your vehicles, pour the coal to the power-generating stations. Apparantly CO2 is a heavy gas and will not be blown away by those nasty solar winds so easily. Tower,
What your friend didn't tell you was that the
reversal preceded a "New" Mountain range on the surface of the planet.
We can only hope Califoria is at the basement of any new range.
BTW: My empirical Energy calculator has spit out a number, 2.2 Billion years of OIL presently exist on the Planet.
Tower- Your friend wasn't wrong. The last "pole flip" was over 660,000 years ago, the time before that was approximately 600,000 years before, so , it's a little late.
NASA's (reasonably accurate piece) is here: http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2003/29dec_magneticfield.htm
This is part of the infamous "Energy Equation" that I've been making noise about.
There's lots of data here: http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/geomag/index_e.php
If the poles truly are ready to flip again, there is a period of no magnetic field for a number of centuries, before it re-orients. SPF-Pb (Lead) won't even help, much.
Cheers! 'Cause there's nothing you or I can do about it. (Except leave the planet and I'm not having much luck on that score).

Posted by: Porter at December 18, 2008 11:05 PMThe Sun had a solar retrograde motion episode recently and odd things also tend to happen on earth for a decade or two, when it does that.
In fact around the time of the last solar retrograde, the New Madrid (MO) earhtquake occured in 1811. It was around 8.5 and was felt all the way to Washington DC.
It was just a few years ago that we had the biggest tsunami seen for hundreds of years.
So now we having the magnetic shield deflating in a never seen before occurence.
The curious thing here is that there was widespread social discontent from 1800 to 1840. With significant wars.
Does Napoleon ring a bell?
Does anyone see a possibility of social discontent or currency collapses anywhere today?
Could the madness of crowds and rulers happen again?
What kind of an unknown pig in a poke did the USA really elect?
Maybe we should ask the Shadow.
Researcher Brent Miller of the Horizon Project discussed past evidence for sudden catastrophic earth changes, and warned we could be nearing another such event, possibly occurring in 2012. Calamities such as a pole shift are likely caused by passing space bodies altering Earth's gravitational field, he explained.
Our solar system moves up and down a "galactic plane," and as the Mayans predicted, Earth will reach the closest point to the center of the galaxy in 2012, said Miller. The center (or "dark rift") has a large gravitational field which has been affecting Earth since 1998, causing larger and more frequent earthquakes, he noted. Quakes will increase as we get closer to 2012, as well as anomalous weather patterns caused by ocean temperature warming-- culminating in a pole shift with huge tsunamis that will wipe out coastal lands, he cautioned.
Miller cited ancient historical data to back up his assertions. Water damage to the Sphinx as well as silt evidence from the Mississippi River indicate that global tidal waves wreaked havoc around 9,000 years ago, he outlined. Various prophecies such as from Nostradamus, Cayce, the Bible, and the Hopi Indians all share similar accounts of dramatic earth cataclysms. Nostradamus wrote of a single day where everyone falls over, and Miller suggested this will be due to a gravitational flux/pole shift.
