Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio, and welcome to our annual Twelve Days of Christmas Extravaganza. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our opening bid in this year's shows, on a humerous note, here are Straight No Chaser performing The Twelve Days of Christmas at the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington, Indiana (1998, 3:30). And for tonight's flip-side, here is Mr. Frank Sinatra performing The Christmas Waltz (2:59).

We're planning to do two tunes a night during this year's extravaganza, since even at two-dozen tunes we're still barely scratching the facade of the rich tradition underfoot. And to be clear, to mitigate potential impatience, we'll generally be starting out on the secular foot now, and ending up on the sacred foot later, ok?

While we're here, a quick reminder that a set of Christmas Carol Song Sheets, including both the sacred and the secular, and formatted for printing, is available (should you find it useful) at The Sagacious Iconoclast.

Lastly, for the record, I should like to note that:

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

After the Christmas music, if you all would like to watch something really fun, take a look at the latest vidcast from these 2 gents down in Texas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp6orlpJ2N8

They won't be appearing on CNN anytime soon but they're very passionate about the conservative movement, always have interesting points, and are endlessly entertaining.

In this week's episode they relate a CRAZY personal story which is more bizarre than a reality show!

Let's keep first and foremost in our minds (and spread the news) how Count Iggy got to be the leader of the LPC, as he attempts to rebuild the Liberal Party of Canada and the media hacks continue to laud his "leadership skills":

http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/john_snobelen/2008/12/15/7750251-sun.html

" ... the Liberals have come up with a new more expedient leadership plan; the one candidate election. Call it the Fidel plan.

"More efficient. Much quicker. Low cost. It's the most politically expedient way to select a leader ever devised. The party bigwigs will select a leader. GIVEN THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON WILLING TO GO THROUGH WITH THIS CHARADE [my emphasis], that selection shouldn't be difficult.

"Real Liberal party members have not been given the opportunity to vote on the Fidel plan. Heck they haven't even been asked for input."

A Blessed and Holy Advent to SDA readers!

The celebration of Christmasdoesn't actually begin until the evening of December 24 and then it continues until Epiphany, January 6: You know?

How about a Christmas thread like we had last year about Christmas songs. I like Good King Wenceslas, which is based on the Duke of Bohemis during the 10th century. Saint Wenceslas is the patron saint of the Czech people.

The Feast of Stephen in the carol is the 26th of December, which is still during the 12 days of Christmas.

Good King Winceslas

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

"Hither, page, and stand by me
If thou know'st it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear him thither."
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
And the bitter weather

"Sire, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread thou in them boldly
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly."

"In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed
Therefore, Christian men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing."

Spengler, The failed Muslim states to come

Financial crises, like epidemics, kill the unhealthy first. The present crisis is painful for most of the world but deadly for many Muslim countries, and especially so for the most populous ones. Policy makers have not begun to assess the damage.

The diplomatic strategy of the industrial nations now resembles a James Clavell potboiler, in which an earthquake interrupts a hopelessly immured plot. Moderate Islam was the El Dorado of the diplomatic consensus. It might have been the case that Pakistan could be tethered to Western interests, or that Iran could be engaged peacefully, or that Turkey would incubate a moderate form of Islam. I considered all of this delusional, but the truth is that we shall never know. The financial crisis will sort them out first...

What cute little holiday trees: but I think I'll stick with my Christmas variety!

If Vitruvius can find a recording of it, I'd love to hear the Welsh "Poverty Carol”:

(“O Deued Pob Cristion,” though born of lives that experienced poverty, speaks of the most precious of gifts.)

All poor men and humble, all lame men who stumble,
come haste ye, nor feel ye afraid;
for Jesus, our treasure, with love past all measure,
in lowly poor manger was laid.

Though wise men who found him laid rich gifts around him,
yet oxen they gave him their hay:
And Jesus in beauty accepted their duty;
contented in manger he lay.

Then haste we to show him the praises we owe him;
our service he ne'er can despise:
Whose love still is able to show us that stable
where softly in manger he lies.

Like the lyrics, the tune and harmony of this carol are simple and exquisitely beautiful. To quote Dylan Thomas, “on sight and sound”, this little known carol broke and captured my heart.

So, this Advent and Christmas season—this holy season—may we “haste . . . to show him the praises we owe him; our service he ne'er can despise . . . ” For, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

YAKUTSK, December 15 (RIA Novosti) - Temperatures in the northeast Siberian republic of Yakutia could fall to minus 60 degrees Celsius (minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit) in the next few days, the local meteorological service said Monday.

With average low temperatures in Yakutia dropping below minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight, weather in the town of Verkhoyansk dropped overnight to minus 53 degrees Celsius (minus 63.4 degrees Fahrenheit), while in Oymyakon it reached minus 57 degrees Celsius (minus 70.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

"However, this is not the limit - in the next few days weather in the town of Krestyakh could drop below minus 58 degrees Celsius (minus 72.4 degrees Fahrenheit)," the meteorological service spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the current spell of extremely cold weather was due to an influx of cold polar air masses.

Yakutia has two places that contest the honor of being named the North Pole of cold, or the place where the lowest-ever temperature in the Northern hemisphere was recorded - Verkhoyansk with a record of minus 67.8 degrees Celsius (minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit) and Oymyakon with a minimum of minus 67.7 degrees Celsius (minus 89.9 degrees Fahrenheit)."

From Peter C. Newman.

Oh, look yonder, here cometh the Ignatieff, the sub-Arctic WASP Obama (of the north, did I say that?).

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081212.wconewman15/BNStory/politics/home

If you ever wanted a succinct description of Ignatieff as philosopher king, with his compassionate ability to completely change his mind on any topic, her it is. His predecessors, Pierre Trudeau and, indeed, Martin Luther, are beckoning this brave new world of philosophical oversight into, well, the problems that befall the LPC (no money, no policies). Then he will deign the nation with his royal consideration.

Swatting aside all difficulties with a wisk of his personna intellect, all shall now stand in abeyance of the One, once he learns how to lead an organization, raise money, and formulate policy, that is.

He is the WASP (sorry, that should read WHITE) Obama, because he's so postmodern, so civil; we can trust in his vitality. So, we should all admire Michael's big brain, and it will get us through, stronger for our coming cost benefit analysis.

Yes, that will sell well with the electorate, most of whom have never heard of him. The comments to this story are quite good too. A must read, I think, if you want some insight into how this guy will be packaged.

Too bad for him there is so much on the record that proves him a contradictory sort who hasn't actually had any non-intelligensia experience, like leading people, for instance.

Mr Newman thinks Canadians will forgive his contradictions, we shall see. I do hope, though, that signals from his and Mr Layton's camp signal this ridiculous coalition idea is now dead.

Too bad, in a way. It would have been fun watching the electorate punish them. Ignatieff should have pulled away from this "Canadians and Quebecers" putsch right away. Gee, I wonder is if the CPC will use this against him? At best, this is another example of his contradictions, signing a document he didn't really believe in.

Yes, the CPC will paint the coalition into their own corner, in the next election, possibly next year, or certainly the year after.

Well, now that we've heard from Peter C. Newman, we can be sure Toronto is solidly behind Ignatieff.

"Goose Eggs Could Get Polar Bears Through Global Warming

A mother polar bear and her two cubs on ice off the coast of Alaska.

Polar bears could avoid extinction despite many starving to death in coming years, according to scientists and other observers who have discovered that some of the bears have found a new food source — goose and duck eggs.

The eggs could be coming in part from a rebounding goose population in the Hudson Bay area, feeding polar bears whose icy habitat in the Arctic is melting, one new study finds.

In recent years, much of the sea ice that polar bears use as a hunting platform for seal meals has melted, forcing some bears — particularly young males — farther north or onto land, where they are not as adept at hunting.

When stuck on land for months, a polar bear typically is forced to survive on its own fat reserves.

The bears were listed earlier this year as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act as populations have declined."

Now I am not sure what the TMLC really is all about. And the press release smacks of a kind of wingnuttery.
