The Chicago Candidate

ABC News;

Chicago Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) is the anonymous "Senate Candidate #5" whose emissaries Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich reportedly claimed offered up to a million dollars to name him to the U.S. Senate, federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

The timeline - "Pretty much everything fits except Barack Obama's statement yesterday that he knew nothing about it. "

Update: I had no contact with the governor or his office... Whoops!

Now that Drudge has linked to the story, the original page has been wiped clean. Oddly enough! (Update - it's been grabbed here.

But they missed this one...

Update - and it goes poof, too! ... even the Google cached versions are disappearing.

Wow, this story keeps getting better and better. (she said with an evil grin)

Jesse Jackson? Ahem...RACIST!!!

There, I thought I'd get that out of the way for the lefties.

Posted by: Eeyore at December 10, 2008 11:57 AM

This will be one of many scandals that the MSM will sweep quickly and quiety under the rug.

Obama can do no wrong. He is the One.

George Jefferson was right....Jesus IS black. And he's come again to heal the earth with compact fluorescent light bulbs. If he has time he'll work on lowering the seas too.

The media just hasn't changed the subject yet.

When they get their story straight, this too, shall pass...

Count on it. These are democrats. Democrats are never accountable.

Posted by: Warwick at December 10, 2008 12:23 PM

Just what is the value of holding a senate seat that makes it worth a million to buy? The current pay of a senator is $169,000. Is that enough, considering that it might only be a four year stint?

Posted by: Woodporter at December 10, 2008 12:34 PM

Don't shoot me, but I have to ask what does MSM mean?

Posted by: puzzled at December 10, 2008 12:34 PM

Mainstream media.

There's a perception that the MSM has promoted a certain political view that runs contrary to common sense ie sense of the common person.

Look on the left side of the main page and it is the MSM which is often the messenger for the ruling elites, who purport to know all that is best for us.

Posted by: set you free at December 10, 2008 12:40 PM

Puzzled - Main(S)tream Media - major news outlets ABC CBS CBC etc.

Hey, I know that O had nothing to do with this - "Larry King Live" told me so - a rolling banner at the bottom declared that Obama had "no knowledge" of this, (ie it didn't state that he *claimed* to have no knowledge of this . . . . . )

Posted by: Erik Larsen at December 10, 2008 12:43 PM

I'd like to play BO at a game of poker, I believe I have some "tells" on him.

How do you get a "tell" on someone? Simple, you catch them lying.Once you have established someone's demeanor when they are lying you can then with good accuracy tell when that someone is lying again.

One thing I know for sure is that BO lies. There are at least two examples I can think of where he has lied to cover up things that he had said in the primaries( no strings talks with Amediddyboob, and bombing Pakistan). I suspect he has lied about other things (ie knowledge of Rev.Wrights political views) but that's a different story.

My point is I think BO was/is lying about having "no contact with the governor or his office" wrt Rod Blagojevich. I have notice that BO sounds like a hockey player being interviewed when he is manipulating the truth. His speech is full of "uhh's and umm's" while his eyes wander away from the person asking the question up into his eyelids. I'm not an expert, but I believe this is a classic "tell".

I think BO will not be damaged politically by this fiasco(benefit of doubt), but I do think he has lied about his recent correspondence with the Governor in an attempt to avoid the distraction. I'm not surprised that BO would handle it in this matter, it appears he can rationalize anything to suit his desires; but, I do add this to the list of poor choices BO seems to consistently make. There was no need to lie in this case, it appears to come more from habit than necessity.

Oh the same old story. The left takes no responsibility ever for corruption in their midst and the ever obedient press will find another story to tell us about the evil Pallin woman...

Posted by: Jim O'Brien at December 10, 2008 1:03 PM

Richard Nixon wasn't guilty of wrongdoing in the Watergate break-in. Instead, he was guilty of aiding in the cover-up that followed. The fact that he was taken down for this has become a lesson that I would have thought all politicians have learned by now -- but maybe not Obama? He won't be brought down by this affair, but he could be damaged. That said, who knows where the investigation will lead.

Posted by: MJ at December 10, 2008 1:08 PM

woodporter, you are not really serious are you? The pension alone could be auctioned off in a fair market for way more than that.

My favorite part:

"Whoever, having knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military authority under the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. 18 USC s.4."

Bwa ha ha. And there is a reporterette for a local Chicago news station that reports that Obama was planning to meet Blego on Nov 5th in Chicago on the matter. This should be easy enough to check. Oh yeah, and Axlerod wasn't exactly lying.... he is just in the habit, kind of unusual for a guy in the kind of responsible postion he occupies, of spouting of imaginary and fanciful tales to the press with no basis in fact.

If Obama was offered a bribe and failed to report it, not a crime, but if he lied about being offered a bribe? Is a federal crime. Ha ha ha.

"The fact that he was taken down for this has become a lesson ..." Taken down by who? The press and the Democratics. Why should Obama worry about anything? Look how the press has whored for him. Jeffry Toobin of ABC News is already inserting cover stories for him that Blego will lie to drag Obama into this.

Posted by: Tim in Vermont at December 10, 2008 1:17 PM

I can just envision someone from some shadowy agency sitting in a room with O, with an envelope, saying "we have everything here", burning it, and saying "now we own you"

Posted by: Erik Larsen at December 10, 2008 1:29 PM

It took 2 years of investigations after the break in to bring Nixon down...I wouldn't call that exceedingly efficient on the part of the press and the Democrats.

MJ, I agree, I don't think Nixon was aware of the break in, but the other things that came to light about his campaign were things he was surely aware of, including:

"They also revealed the immense scope of crimes and abuses, which included campaign fraud, political espionage and sabotage, illegal break-ins, improper tax audits, illegal wiretapping on a massive scale, and a secret slush fund laundered in Mexico to pay those who conducted these operations.[1] This secret fund was also used as hush money to buy silence of the seven men who were indicted for the June 17 break-in."

I'm not really clear on how Nixon could not be aware of these activities? Its possible I suppose, but again, not totally sure.

Posted by: bar_jebus at December 10, 2008 1:54 PM

What a nice distraction for a Bostonian. We just recently had a state senator and a city councilor indicted for corruption. They both began as community organizers.
I guess that's where the action is.
Watching to see how this 'do' in Chicago plays out and how much "PUSH" Jackson still has.

the question is,

Is that how Obama obtained his senate seat?

"Ill. governor meeting with Obama today

By Carol Sowers
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 at 10:39 a.m.

CHICAGO, ILL. -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That's one of Obama's first priorities today.

He's meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.

Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement.

There's already been speculation about his selection...from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Chicago's south side who co-chaired Obama's presidential campaign,"

http://www.connecttristates.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=217582

Posted by: richfisher at December 10, 2008 2:19 PM

We're supposed to believe Mr. Hussein Obama knew nothing about all this? That he hadn't had even one phone call with the Gov. about his Senatorial replacement? Ya, right...

So, we Yanks have in our new Kenyan, Communist President-Elect a man with Nixon's vices - a propensity to lie when perceived as necessary - but without Nixon's assets - a truly keen intellect; loads of high level Govt experience, both domestic and foreign; great administrative ability; a fundamental sense of Patriotism.

(My new bumper sticker: "Don't blame me-I voted for McCain")

Posted by: Dave in Pa. at December 10, 2008 2:19 PM

Considering dad's nickname among his past victims i.e. "S-------n Jackson", turnabout is fair play. The really interesting part is that whoever "bought" the Senate seat from Baglo would need to keep doing business with him. No doubt there are wheels within wheels and every possibility that Big O and Jesse will turn out to be crime fighting heroes and part of the sting from the start.

"Big O and Jesse". Great name for a TV Crime show.

Posted by: Sgt Lejaune at December 10, 2008 2:20 PM

Nixon abused the IRS's power to audit? I am so shocked, BTW, while CLinton was president, frequent critic and Fox News personality Bill O'Reilly was audited three times, despite not finding anything.

Posted by: Tim in Vermont at December 10, 2008 2:32 PM

"Is that how Obama obtained his senate seat?"

Obama got his senate seat by getting a judge to unseal a decades old divorce case full of the kind of dirt that soon to be ex-wives put in those things. Funny you should ask. It was "change you can believe in."

Posted by: Tim in Vermont at December 10, 2008 2:34 PM

Why was this not brought up before the Election ?

Oh Yea, Woodreporter, dang near every US Senate Seat comes with a Money-Back-Guaranteed Seat on a Committee which is directly proportional to the PORK that goes back to your home state.

Is that clear enuf ?

Obama could be between a rock and a hard place. It's obviously in his best interests as President-elect to express in the strongest possible terms that he condemns such behaviour, but on the other hand he is so well connected to the Chicago quid pro quo machine that he needs to be very careful about pissing people off. Prosecutors typically cut deals with smaller players to get the bigger fish.

This story's not done yet. ABC News says "The FBI affidavit said Blagojevich had been told by an adviser 'the president-elect can get Rod Blagojevich's wife on paid corporate boards in exchange for naming the president-elect's pick to the Senate.'" What's at issue here is whether Blagojevich's advisor was just making an assumption based on Obama's previous history and on Chicago politics in general, or was there a proferred quid pro quo from someone on Obama's team? Blag's advisor's statement certainly sounds more informed than speculative.

Posted by: EBD at December 10, 2008 3:22 PM

Ah, yes, the triangulation, the indirect approach using the private sector for quid pro quos. Political appointments laundering, as it were.

Remember Obama got $1 million to a hospital that Michelle worked at after which her pay rose very sharply. Doubled, if I'm not mistaken.

Do these people really think anyone including the faithful, believe a single word they utter anymore? How careful they are of the Democratic parties feelings. No offending Obama or his Party.
Its going to be a long 4 years.
I don't know about you folks but I’ve had a belly full of misdirection with the attendant lies for good from the con artists passing as the Media. Its so pitiable to watch them grovel before Obama their messiah , the stomach wants to turn over its last meal in rebellion.
The day is coming when no one will hear them out of complete disgust.
