These two passages are part of the same Margaret Wente column;
If Michaëlle Jean agrees to give Stephen Harper a second chance, she'll put him on a short leash. I like that image. After all, he's been a naughty puppy. He peed all over Parliament, then bared his teeth.Posted by Kate at December 4, 2008 9:11 AM[...]
This business has become embarrassing. Remember when we used to ridicule the Americans for having a political culture that was moronic, juvenile and destructive?
Still a little fuzzy on what Harper did that's so wrong. I read the text of the financial update by Flaherty. Seems to contain mostly good ideas. They're just not quite marxist enough for Jack and Stephane. Harper has governed from the centre - decidedly so, and generally not to my liking. This is a naked power grab by the three socialist ninnies.

CTV might try this poll...
What do you think of CTV polls?

- manipulative
Result of poll might be, "more people find CTV polling to be manipulative than accurate or helpful"

Carleton County, 03 December, 2008
Rural Landowners, Farmers, Loggers and Small Business people are joining forces and are in the process of planning a large protest rally for Monday, 08 December to voice their opposition to the Duceppe-Dion-Layton coalition. The rally, which will involve heavy agricultural and forestry equipment in Ottawa’s downtown core, is expected to draw participants from the Upper and Lower Ottawa Valley as well as Leeds-Grenville, Hastings-Prince Edward and the Peterborough area.
Ontario Landowners’ Association Director Jamie MacMaster stressed the fact that the rally is not just a “Farm” protest. “This is a call for all rural folks - not just farmers, but small business people, loggers, machinery dealers, construction guys, whatever - on both sides of the Ottawa River, to come and stand with us on Monday morning. I’m not going to stand by and let a Separatist run my Country.”
Prescott Federation of Agriculture Vice President Reg Presley agrees. “No one I know in Rural Canada voted for a coalition that would have a Separatist holding the reins of power. This is nothing but a power-grab by three little men who want to be king. They need to know that Rural Canada is standing on the outside looking in, and that’s why we decided to do it on Monday. In Prescott and Glengarry the farmers worked hard to get our MP elected; we’re not going to let these clowns railroad us.”
Information about staging areas and routes will be released as the details are worked out.

NHL Coalition
Having decided that the Detroit Redwings technically won the 2008 Stanley Cup, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and Dallas Stars have formed a coalition demanding a three way ownership of the league title. Rational for their decision revolves around their total combined scoring in the 2008 Semi-Finals, their total share of season ticket holders versus the Detroit Redwings and their horror at discovering the Detroit Redwings are using a more cost effective and efficient but non-union made Silver polish to keep the Stanley Cup gleaming.
The three teams are being assisted in their bid to overturn the traditional results by members of the Quebec Hockey League who have no real interest in the success of the NHL in general but sense an opportunity to demand Zamboni's and other critical equipment be manufactured in Quebec. Player representatives, Team Owners and Nike are expected to submit their proposals to Don Cherry in the next few days.
Fans and ticket holders are neither being asked or allowed a voice in the final decision.
Where will it end?
Posted by: tranio at December 4, 2008 9:47 AMCannot win any intelligent arguement while attempting to defend the "Tree" traitors coalition so this "journalist" implys that the "jounalist" appointed by Paulo Martin will put Prime Minister Harper in his place. As if this "Jeannie come lately" has any concept of life outside the golden triangle of Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa, you know the place called Canada where the real people live, or what the real people want. One could only wish that Maggie Wendt would stay gone.
Posted by: uuess at December 4, 2008 9:50 AMThe image may be contradictory but I think it is representative.
People don't know who to blame, other than they dont like the situation. Natural place to start is the leader...and fair game. Harper has a rep, should have been aware of it.
The miscalculation was in thinking the Opposition was going to jump this far this fast, they have over escalated. Harper did his climb down but no response, the ships are still steaming to Cuba and the missles are still being assembled, so to speak.
So Layton, and Rae's sock puppet, Dion, have now placed prestige on the line, they can't back down.
I have been trying to figure out why this was really bothering me. If it were just ideological I could dislike it, but not feel such a visceral dislike for it...thats politics, sometimes you win and sometimes the other guy does.
The formal coalition with the Bloc, which by the way means a formal rejection of any co-ioperation with the Conservatives, is intended as an ideological left wing government. But the effect of signing on with the BLoc and freezing of conservatives is to give the Bloc veto...all decisions go through them ultimately.
Once again, the Bloc slowly melting ideologically into the left isnt a problem, it is what would happen with some parts drifitng to the cons, nationalism holding them together.
This deal is Sovereignty Association. Thats's why it bugs me, thats the core of it. This is a reversal of everything the national federalist parties have worked towards in terms of trying to defuse cultural issues so that it can be JUST about ideology.
Layton, Dion and Rae are too dense and too blinded by their chnace at what they think is a historic oportunity for the left, a left wing majority, that they missed this detail.
Given that they have forgotten to clear their wise man panel, that they cant put a video out, that they havent really understood the role of the GG, that they havent costed their plan (McCallum has been quiet lately) the fact they missed this, the Bloc's interest and the unintended consequence of Sovereignty Association, in their blind rush is hardly surprising.
This isnt Quebec baiting, this IS about protecting the country and not allowing a rollback of 30 years of, sometimes misguided, concerted efforts by federalists to drain debate of cultural issues.
Every Quebec federalist should be horrified by this prospect, this is not about the normal sophisticated necessity of compartmentalization that Montrealer learned to keep the peace. This is about a fundamental change and their worst fear. It is being brought in to the house by a group too blind to see the broader interest.
There are some unwritten rules, taboos, in all cultures, things that need no explaining as to why you dont do them. The act of signing a formal blank cheque with the Bloc is one of them.
If we are lucky we might survive as a country and continue on the path to slowly distancing ourselves from this debilitating discussion. If there is a surprise on Monday in the Quebec election then Jack/Stephane and Bob unintentionally opened the door for Serperation. Nicely done gentleman, there is a special place in Hell reserved for those who mean well and have high motives.
Posted by: Stephen at December 4, 2008 9:52 AM".....because now Stéphane Dion is back. He's not the kind of figure to inspire confidence. They don't believe he can lead people to the men's room, never mind a coalition or a country."
Well, at least she's disgusted with ALL the actors in this play, as am I.
OC,
Harper displayed his bitter partisan streak at a time the country needed cohesion, cooperation and a sense of "we're in this together". He also campaigned on "working with the other parties".
But here are some other basic facts the MSM REFUSE to admit....
Depending on your POV, Harper's backing away on his more contentious points was either chickenshit or part of a grander scheme. But, he DID back away. However, it is clearly the 3 Hamigos who have done nothing but ratchet up tension since.
Also, I have yet to hear ANY pundit correct Dion when he repeatedly says Harper has lost the competence of the House. Is it just me, or is there a pesky little ritual called a vote that has to take place before that claim can be uttered?
There are of course many more, but I don't want to be late for work. The most galling to me though is this "fun with numbers" game they play when talking about % of popular vote.
Absolute spinning, manipulation and outright lying at it's best/worst.
Good day, all.
Post by: Stephen; Very well thought out but I disagree with the Quebec issue, because they will like this. Gilles Ducceppe will be the PM. He has the final vote, they can put anything in front of him, but without his vote they can pass nothing. It's kind of like Russia; Putin as PM and the other guy as president. If Putin doesn't like it, it will not happen. So who is really going to run the country.

On another note though at least she is back to insulting Canadians and not trying to cause an international incident.

Patricia (?) Horodelski, give your head a shake.
Is this part of an ‘I need somebody to protect and look after me' syndrome that attracts these people to left-wing ideology?
Whatever happened to the ideals of feminism, where they seized the opportunity to stand up for themselves?
To be fair, the resident economist (can't remember her name) seemed a bit more steady, asking ‘what's next? Are we going to bail out department stores when their sales are down?'
Help the forestry industry? How? By forcing Americans to buy homes?
The auto industry? Should be an interesting day watching the unions get declawed in the US.
Is it any co-incidence that ads in favour of the Canadian coalition are being bought and paid for by the Canadian Labour Congress?
This truly is an attempt at a bloodless marxist revolution.
The media is disparate. That is why they act so.
[ The unprecedented crisis in Ottawa appears to be making more than just political history. It's also thrusting Canadians into the brave new world of virtual campaigning.
The blogosphere has been in overdrive in the past few days, as bloggers vent their frustrations, misgivings, or thoughts about the fight in Ottawa between the Liberal-NDP opposition coalition and the Conservative government. ] ctv
[ CTV.ca broke 1000 comments Wednesday for the first time ever on Wednesday, as Conservative Leader Stephen Harper and Liberal Leaders Stephane Dion addressed the nation over the airways. ] ctv
[ By contrast, just under 200 comments were posted on September 7, 2008, when the Tories dropped the federal election writ. ] ctv
And sda has at times approached 300 commenters - on a household budget !!
But, oh no, couldn't be the MSM's product or anything like that, eh ? After all, they are intellectuals and are professional journalists.
The point here is that Canadians can now, with a click, read different takes on the same story. Spin exposed.
Before it was just the Reuters, AP, Thompson marching order spiel that the MSM subscribers put out. If you don't, you are out. Ask The Western Standard.

Well, not any more, what with Obama postponing his "tax cuts for 95% of Americans" because "you don't raise taxes during a recession." I guess he is just too smart for the likes of me, but I am glad that we don't have to get ridiculed by our betters in the moral superpower to the north anymore.

Posted by: b_C at December 4, 2008 11:53 AMHey set you free,
I noticed comments in the house about the G&M...to the effect that the Globe supports the conservatives. They equate an endorsement during an election with suddenly being supporters. This means that when the rare occasion happens that someone in the Globe writes something negative about the conservatives, it's spun to mean that their own supporters have even turned on them.
Come on.
Sam.
What's really burning the ass of the MSM? It is the WHERE and WHO that support Harper. Western Canada and rural Ontario are painted Tory blue and not those leftist-socialist artsy-fartsy the world-owes-me-a-living urban areas. The WHO are people that actually have dirt under their finger nails and have to keep filling the socialist trough for the swine to nurse out of with their hard earned money.
Posted by: The Glengarrian at December 4, 2008 12:34 PMThis has become a black comedy.
Dion seems to have his automatic weapon perpetually on the "shoot myself in the foot" setting. The guy is an absolute moron and I can't think of anything scarier than the Troika of Twits, with him at the reins, heading the government of Canada.
And, BTW, Ms Wente, Prime Minister Stephen Harper did not "pee all over Parliament." He was trying to save the taxpayers of this country $30,000,000 a year in public subsidies that the political parties have no right to. Let them all raise their own funds. Canadians are overtaxed as it is.
You want to know who did the peeing? The Coalition of the Dumb Dudes, trying to mark THEIR (sic) territory. It's they who have created the firestorm because Canadians are absolutely fed up with the antics of the left, especially when they try to get their hands in our pockets to extract our hard-earned dollars for their benefits-only-to-lib-lefties subsidies and grants.
The last straw, and the one that has lit the spark, is that Gilles Duceppe(tion) is going to be de facto Prime Minister.
I DON'T THINK SO IF THE MAJORITY OF CANADIANS HAVE THEIR SAY.
Posted by: batb at December 4, 2008 1:49 PMWente and a few more of the journalistas can opine about the GG putting Mr Harper on a short leash but they're full of BS, they had no freaking clue about what she would do, no inside track.
A few of these know-it-all excuses for journalists need to be put on a short leash and called to heel. Most of us have had enough of their spinning.

(And, come to think of it, what's happening in Ottawa with the Coalition of Dumb Dudes, isn't totally unlike the invasion of the Martians on an unsuspecting America.
The MSM could be represented by President Jack Nicholson and First Lady Glenn Close, who are delighted with what they think is the peaceful coming of the aliens until the Martians begin firebombing the white doves released by the duped Americans as a sign of friendship.
Then the hostile take-over begins in earnest.)
Posted by: batb at December 4, 2008 3:23 PMFast Eddie Stelmach was in the news this morning and the verbage was 'that his party has "contingency plans" if this coalition goes forward.

It would be a real treat if it had a sniper squad on a grassy knoll on Parliament Hill too.
It should be obvious to all now. Canada doesn't work anymore.
Posted by: Jim at December 4, 2008 3:43 PMstephen: "The miscalculation was in thinking the Opposition was going to jump this far this fast ... "
PM Stephen Harper may perhaps be excused for a miscalculation which never entertained the eventuality that the Opposition parties would EVER stoop as low as they have. He may perhaps be
excused for thinking that they had more integrity and held the Canadian electorate in higher esteem than it appears they do.
As it is, they've been playing us all for fools.
Who else would have thought that this Troika of Twits, with about one and a half brains between them and even fewer moral or ethical scruples, would have dared to put together a coalition to form a new government (sic) just six weeks after the CPC was duly and democratically elected--and a coalition whose de facto Prime Minister would be the separatist par excellence, Gilles Duceppe?
If PMSH can be faulted, I suggest it's for being a thoroughly decent and civilized guy (unlike his counterparts in the Dumb Dude's Coalition)--and a shrewd politician for understanding that the revoking of the $1.95/vote public subsidy would smoke out the parsimonious pettiness of the Opposition parties.
I'm not so sure that PMSH didn't mean to go for broke. These asshats, in the first week of Parliament, notwithstanding their voting in favour of the Throne Speech, were already beginning to gag, blindfold, and bind the arms and legs of PMSH and his CPC. Can you imagine ANOTHER Parliamentary session the same as the last? A slow and painful death.
Maybe PMSH simply decided to speed up the inevitable.
Charles Adler hit the ball out of the park with his editorial today about "unbiased" university professors, who our friends in the media constantly bring on-air to shape national opinion!

She has NO credibility, yet there she is as a pundit on CTVNewsNet today, making her usual cheap shots about Prime Minister Harper.
Wente is very vulgar and snide for a columnist with a national newspaper.
She has no class.
If the stooges had of come out and said they budgeted based on the vote allowance and needed the money from the last election, I'd have said "that's fair, but after this you're on your own".
Of course, they didn't do that.
Now they are about to find out, there are actions, and then there are consequences.
A valuable lesson in life if they are smart enough to learn it.
