Hark, ye hungry polar bears. Gaia will provide.
Posted by Kate at November 22, 2008 11:04 AMHaving been transformed by the wisdom imbued upon me by Mr. Gore, and Dr. Suzuki, Greenpeace, PETA, et al, I must take action!
I am flummoxed, though, as I cannot decide how best to rescue these hapless victims of Climate Hope and Change: do I raise my thermostat a half degree? replace one of my mercury-laden green bulbs with a 100W tungsten? or should I see if its possible to buy a carbon credit online?
Posted by: shaken at November 22, 2008 11:19 AMNaw. Can't be. The Arctic ice shelf is DECREASING. Jeezzz. Can't you guys keep up with AGW...errrr...climate change?

sorry but i find this 'cull' another appalling abomination of man's stewardship and Dominion over Gaia.......any truly just society would be flying in a team of veterinarian dentists to succour these peaceful cousins of the unicorn...and of course a sufficient number of facilitators ennablers interventionists and therapists....

Posted by: Jim in Calgary at November 22, 2008 11:44 AMNews Report: The Confederated Union of Narwhal Whales (CUNW) announced today class action lawsuits in US and Canadian Federal Court against Gore, Suzuki etal for misrepresentation regarding the Arctic Melt in 2008.
CUNW spokeswhale, Ivory Tusk, said the unfortunate situation in Pond Inlet would never have occurred if AGW proponents had not declared the Arctic would be ice free in 2008. Tusk went on to say that, like many other Canadian snowbirds, narwhals normally migrate south with the onset of Arctic winter in Septemeber but media reports that the 2008 was going to be the largest ever, and that the one year ice would be the most fragile in human history had resulted in the tragic sitiation that is affecting the Pond Inlet pod today.
Tusk also said that the MSM has been named co-defendents in the suits due to their abject failure to report that the 2008 melt was considerably less than 2007's and that the 2008 refreezing rates since September have reflected historical norms.
Posted by: stephen p at November 22, 2008 11:48 AMTime for Sarah to hold another news conference.
I can just see her now standing next to the hole in the ice with the polar bears contentedly dining on Gaia's generous bounty in the background.
Announcing all this good news - end of global warming, return of the Arctic ice, reassuring the liberals that the polar bears have enough to eat again. That should surely put her back in the good books at the Huffpo, after that little misunderstanding with the turkeys.
Posted by: Kevin Jaeger at November 22, 2008 11:59 AMIt looks like the narwhals did get the "ice is melting" memo, to their great misfortune.
Posted by: Woodporter at November 22, 2008 12:20 PMSounds like a hazard of life for the one-toothed cuties --
The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) occurs in inshore
areas of northeastern Canada and Greenland during the
open-water season, from July through September (Born et
al., 1994; Dietz et al., 1994; Kingsley et al., 1994; Richard
et al., 1994).
By the time the Arctic fjords and bays freeze
over in autumn, narwhals are leaving these areas. They
apparently make long-distance movements between summering
and wintering grounds (Dietz and Heide-Jørgensen,
1995). During winter and early spring (8 – 10 months),
narwhals frequent areas covered with dense offshore pack
ice (Koski and Davis, 1994).

My brother spent time in Pond Inlet, setting survey control monuments for land claims. You have to appreciate that the Inuit people have made a life out of tricking Whitey. They pitch a tent in their backyards, and collect $15000 from the Feds for living off the land. They don't just think we're retarded, they know it. They just want to hunt more than their limit, and this is the story they came up with to justify it. More power to them, I suppose. Those limits are an insult to their culture in the first place.

Jeez, they ain't seals, but where's the Maccer and PegLeg to save the day?
Where are the Greenpeace whackjobs, protesting this horrible act agianst these poor, innocent creatures?
Posted by: DanBC at November 22, 2008 2:36 PMMan, you think that ice-bound whales are serious?
How about the UK where 2 inches of snow overnite in Scotland, caused the bookmaker William Hill to slash the odds of snow falling on Xmas Day in London from 8/1 to 6/1 and in Glasgow to 7/2.
William Hill spokesman said 'we have never had so much money in the book with over a month to go. If it snows we will be paying out millions to our customers.'
Now that's serious stuff. For England.
And what I want to know, is how do I get in on the action?
Maybe Ontario Lottery Corp will have some action on Toronto snowstorms this year? Everybody knows Ontario is going to need the income.
What's this word 'cull' ? Is it Canadian for kill?
Posted by: dr kill at November 22, 2008 6:01 PMWhat is this word 'cull'? Is it the official Canadian way to say kill?
Posted by: dr kill at November 22, 2008 6:13 PM"Cull" is an old wildlife management term derived from an ancient First Nations language. It means "here is photo-op proof that budget approval justified for new Ottawa HQ".
Posted by: Sgt Lejaune at November 22, 2008 6:42 PMI urge PETA and all other animal welfare activist groups, to mount a "save the narwhals" campaign(without asking for taxpayers money), and hie up to Pond Inlet to effect a rescue.
Dress warmly, it's a little chillier than Saltspring Island.
Posted by: dmorris at November 22, 2008 7:31 PMI hope that the next news story like this will be a massive leftie die-off on the San Francisco peninsula.
Posted by: Silicon Valley Jim at November 22, 2008 9:16 PMThe best thing about this for the starving polar bears is that they can pick their teeth with the 'tusk' when they're done.
Posted by: andycanuck at November 23, 2008 3:12 AMAt last, a use for Canada's new ice breakers, (if they ever get built) save the Narwhal.
For a nominal fee of 20 or maybe 190 whales I'm sure the Japanese could free them.
