"Funny how Dems elected a guy to chair Energy and Commerce who opposes both."

"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted." - Barack Obama
Meet Rep.Henry Waxman of Beverly Hills

This is definitely a signal that the US recession will be long and deep. If this guy really is allowed free reign, they could be in the crapper for 20 years. But, that is what they voted for, so I have little sympathy for any future belly aching.

According to the link article and my own deduction, this Waxman of Beverly Hills could well be worse than the Gore himself.

Hollywood "SF" ("Science Fact"; the word "fiction" soon to be banned by the O and his MSM messengers) everywhere soon, check your local listing.

May God (The real one) have mercy on us all.

This is what the LIEderals, under DeYawn, wanted for Canada. I guess Al Gore got his wish with the USA - he might as well be Pres.

Forgot to mention that this whole thing might be more worrisome now that oil is taking a price nose dive. Obama's unconvincing "We will be energy independent" tapping of domestic energy resources might now take a backseat. His only approach via Waxman might be stupid windmills and other pie in the sky projects of the lefty dumbass persuasion.

I can see it now. The economy sputtering on life support for the next 4 years like a bad Jimmy Carter nightmare with no new major domestic oil and gas devellopment. Then a 2012 Republican White House kicks off the world economy again. Energy becomes in high demand and goes back up to over 120$+/barrel.

"CO2 is the greatest threat to the planet in mankind's history. We will send environmental agents to reduce each families carbon units by 50%. Please decide beforehand which family members you wish to have euthanised."

Posted by: grok at November 21, 2008 11:39 AM

The little experiment will go something like this:

-Regulate and tax "dirty" energy production
-results in a decrease of affordable, reliable energy and jobs
-subsidize clean energy
-clean energy fails to replace coal generated electricity. Forcing them to rely on ever increasing tax money to try to keep up production.
-politicians, MSM and various activists become concerned as demand and supply realities force electricity prices way up
-the same comrades become outraged over high profits of electrical companies and demand regulation, control, windfall taxes etc.
-Future liberal politicians campaign on redistributing taxes to give the poor to heat their households. You know "For the children".
-Watch the MSM ignore any connection between foolish government intervention and resulting consequences.

On the silver lining side, the lag time between government intervention and collapse will be at least 10 years. That gives forward thinking Canadian companies the time to build nuclear and clean coal generation to supply electricity to the US at premium prices.

Wasn't it S.Palin who promised sky rocketing energy prices and to bankrupt coal companies?

Maybe I'm not as informed as I thought!

Kevin
My thoughts exactly!

No, that was the O.

Sarah Palin said she would kill all the wolves using helicopters piloted by her incessed daugther wearing 150,000$ clothes. ;-)

The United States is in for a depression. Unfortunately, as our largest trading partner we'll be dragged down with them. Time to court the Chinese and Indians neither of whom buys this AGW cr@p.

Posted by: DrD at November 21, 2008 12:39 PM

On the bright side Canada's oil has just become more valuable again. The price is down for now but with no new drilling or development in the US that will prove to be temporary and the latest IEA report showing a drop off in supply of 8% per annum. Even with demand destruction there will once again be shortages soon.

Carbon trading is all ready to serve up the next big financial bubble. The Carbon Pie is baked and ready right now on the Chicago and Montreal exchanges, just like a thick crust Chicago pizza served with lots of deli meat, custom made for bankers and politicians (and they are drooling).

Carbon Caps look to be derivative based, just like Enron was trading, or maybe like the "insurance" on adjustable rate mortgages that took down AIG, i.e., "trades" so complicated that no one understands them, not even the companys involved, so that any new carbon cap and trade legislation will also come with endless meetings and hideously expensive lawyer and accounting fees.

Luckily for us poor shmucks, No Cap and Trade! is a proven winning position with North American voters, as is No New Taxes On Fuel! Dion bled seats and power with the Green Shift. The BC Libs could soon be turned out of office because of new carbon taxes on energy. Could be mildly entertaining to watch the NDP in BC spin the issue in the next BC election.

Voters want investments in real assets like our roads and bridges, not lawyers fees and carbon derivatives. Climate Change and carbon taxes are issues that usually bleed voter support. North American politicians who are planning to pig out on carbon taxes could choke on them.

i see a major war looming

t'will be the diversion needed to carry much of this stupidity out,

and I don't rule out the possibility of the O idiot stumbling into one just as the great JFK almost did

Posted by: GYM at November 21, 2008 1:18 PM

O is an ideologue. Facts, cause and effect, and failure mean nothing. Progress is measured in the idealistic pockmarks that are passed while bulldozing ahead with both eyes tightly shut.

In the case of the USSR, the bulldozer stopped not when the operator decided that enough was enough, but only when the 'dozer ran out of fuel (money).

Posted by: Rosco at November 21, 2008 1:19 PM

I agree with GYM. It's the classic exit strategy for Libs. When all else fails, a war will turn things around. But what happens if you don't have the fuel to get your army to the theatre? Do they send the Nukes to keep the costs down?

Posted by: Rosco at November 21, 2008 1:28 PM

And who are they replacing? -- from your link --

Democrats voted to buck seniority for next year's session and strip the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives, Michigan's John Dingell, of the chairmanship of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Long known as "The Truck," the much-feared auto industry partisan chaired that powerful panel [...] nearly three decades as the committee's top Democrat.
But with the Big Three automakers now reduced to panhandling on Capitol Hill, it seems apt that their biggest shill in Congress, whom the union-whipped industry has long showered with campaign cash, has been ditched.
Dingell is liberal, but he at least fought against excessive emission standards and other Greenpeace wish list items [...]

There you have it. With some policy changes coming "it seems apt".

Canada should begin immediately with plans to ship oil and liquified natural gas to China. If the US doesn't want it we need to develp new customers.

Posted by: MJH at November 21, 2008 1:31 PM

Of course they'll be energy independent. Just how much does a zero GDP nation burn, you figure?

Posted by: Warwick at November 21, 2008 2:47 PM

just bailed on my last u.s. investment today. aleast the people of the u.s. have the second amendment. there are more guns in the u.s. than citizens and at least 50% of them will continue to up hold their constitution.

Waxman from California?

Say, isn't that the state that suffers from a severe case of NIMBY when it comes to supplying power for its 36 million people?

Posted by: rockyt at November 21, 2008 3:45 PM

yep

As anybody who understands the US Constitution knows there's only one President.

Obama is the president-elect. His presidency must be confirmed by the Electoral College.

Then, if the Electoral College approves, he is sworn in as President on Jan. 21.

All Obama can do in the transition period is appoint and announce his cabinet.

Where is the big o? He's getting briefed by the same people who brief all Presidents.

Should be interesting to listen to what viewpoint he changed in light of information he may not have had before.

Waxman, I'll agree, is a goofball.

Posted by: set you free at November 21, 2008 4:41 PM

I lose both ways since I live in Kalifornia. We have the market cornered for left wing nuts. Between Arnold, Nancy, Barbara, and now Henry we are sinking deeper and deeper into the brown smelly liberal cesspool.

There is one very tiny ray of hope. The state needs a big bailout I'm hoping nobody helps us and we go bankrupt. That way all the union contracts will have to be renegotiated. State workers can retire after 30 years with 90% of their pay. A person can easily retire at 55 and have another 30 years of good health.

I don't know if it's good news but I still have a Canadian passport.

But what happens if you don't have the fuel to get your army to the theatre? Do they send the Nukes to keep the costs down?
~Rosco

The high price of oil for the last 3 years has largely been because the U.S. and the P.R.C. have been stockpiling strategic reserves.
BJ Clinton largely emptied the U.S. strategic reserves.

The U.S. has now DOUBLED their strategic reserves.

My office is so close to the U.S. border, I can literally see the traffic lights in Detroit. I've followed U.S. politics very closely all my life. Never before have I been in such fear for the U.S. I fear the 'Chosen One' and his ilk taking the hard left turn. Pelosi and her cohorts should send shivers down the spine and Obama could be in a position to make 2 or 3 Supreme Court appointments during his tenure. I'm not ashamed to say I'm worried, concerned, scared about what lies ahead.

Posted by: Watcher at November 22, 2008 10:31 AM

Voter regret is allready rampant among folks I talk to. I ask why in the first place and they say they swallowed the H/C crap.
btw, Its the "Office of the president elect"
Its a new thing that is being tried out after our LAST free election
