I didn't mention it at the time, but a few days ago the 10,000th post went up here at SDA.
That's right - there have been ten thousand posts here in just under 5 years.
So, if I let things slide here for a day or two during hunting season, dear readers, I hope you understand.
But I'm back now, and Bambi and his mom are cooling their heels at Prairie Meats in Saskatoon. (Who I can heartily recommend for wild game processing.)
Based on the feedback in the comments, maybe next year we'll form an SDA hunting party.
...Kate is running for govenor?
Posted by: tomax7 at November 18, 2008 8:19 PMAn SDA hunting party? Will that require plus fours and other such appropriate hunting attire or will jeans and a plaid shirt suffice?
I'm running out of time here in Aberta to fill my tags.(I'm hoping this economic slowdown I hear about all the time gets here in time for hunting season next year). I've hardly seen any chickens out this year and my dog is getting a mighty itchy trigger paw.
Congrats on 10,000 by the way Kate. Been an avid fan for most of those five years. Here's hoping you keep up the great work.
Posted by: johnboy at November 18, 2008 8:27 PMCongrats Kate on your 10,000th! And unlike some blogs who have only 500/600 hundred,99.99% of yours either make sense,or rile the lefties up real good. Damn good track record!
Posted by: Justthinkin at November 18, 2008 8:34 PMCongrats!
Damn! I nearly had the first comment on the 10,000th post......lol
Posted by: AtlanticJim at November 18, 2008 8:41 PMA hunting party would be fun! I've got a deer costume that's been handed down in my family over the generations. It's so realistic-looking (apart from a seven or eight holes, now patched) that from thirty yards away, even deer can't tell that you're not a real deer.
There's a bit of an odd story to go with it: every one of my forebears who ever wore it met with some kind of untimely end in the woods, but the details are never given.
Ah well, I'm not superstitious. Tally-ho!
Posted by: EBD at November 18, 2008 8:44 PMJust returned from the NRO cruise in time to congratulate you on this kilometerstone.
You continue to be a must-read.
Posted by: Drained Brain at November 18, 2008 9:18 PMHow does one pick up some venison in this country if you aren't a hunter or don't have any hunter friends?? Do I have to drive to Saskatchewan next year and get Kate to take me hunting with her??
Posted by: MikeP at November 18, 2008 9:24 PMHow about an SDA feeding party, for those that are not very good hunters? I make wine.

Considering the results, Agent 13, I only half-agree with you.
Posted by: Drained Brain at November 18, 2008 9:34 PMLet's see. 2,000 per year, that's around 30 per day. And that's just those of us drunk enough to lose all inhibitions :-)
Posted by: RW at November 18, 2008 9:55 PMKate, does poster #10,000 get a signed deer antler?
SDA hunting trip sounds pretty cool. Can I bring my howitzer? ~:D
Posted by: The Phantom at November 18, 2008 10:08 PMHey Kate...I'm a pretty tough ex-RCMP officer, and have not hesitated to shoot at people (hey..they were shooting at me...as it turned out, no-one actually got hit).
But I tried hunting once, had a buck in my sights...just couldn't do it...I guess I'm just a sucker for pretty animals.
But personally I'd be pleased to join the SDA "hunt"...because I have never been prone to criticize hunters; I respect them, I'm just not one of them...it's just not for me personally.
I'll be the one with the plastic rifle saying "bang" in a whisper...
Posted by: Bruce at November 18, 2008 10:08 PM"(hey..they were shooting at me...as it turned out, no-one actually got hit)."
Actually I have to correct that...on one ocassion two people DID get hit..but none fatally...
I can bring a few paintball guns that fire 30 rounds a second Bruce. Better than saying "bang".......
Posted by: AtlanticJim at November 18, 2008 10:15 PMPrairie Meats in S'kabush is an excellent place to shop for all kinds of meats. Their staff is very friendly and super helpful.
Posted by: a different bob at November 18, 2008 10:25 PMKate how about a SDA summer gopher shoot? No need for a license lots to shoot at and of course very fitting to the name and dead mascot of the blog.
I'm hoping to get my fac this winter so I can get me a marlin .17 hmr.
Posted by: Gord Tulk at November 18, 2008 10:30 PMFor Bruce...with apologies to an old army joke we told in the air force up at Cold Lake.
...buddy joins the RCMP and isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. So when he lines up for his rifle, the nco's (non-commissioned officers) say "hey, we can't give him a rifle, he'll shoot himself in the foot!"
So they gave him a branch and say "just yell 'bang bang bang' and it will shoot".
"Oh ok" he says.
Then buddy lines up for a bayonet. "No way" the nco's say, 'he'll cut himself!"
So they give him a twig and say "just go 'cutty cutty cutty' and it will work.
"Oh ok" he says.
Then buddy lines up for grenades.
"Oh forget it" the nco's say, 'give him some rocks, otherwise he'd really hurt himself."
So they tell buddy, "just yell 'boom boom boom' and they'll blow up.
"Oh ok' he says.
So they put buddy way in the back 40 cleaning the tanks so he wouldn't hurt himself or anyone.
Suddenly, over the hill comes the enemy.
"OH NO", buddy quickly grabs his rocks and throws them yelling "boom boom boom" - but the enemy still walks towards him.
What to do??? So buddy grabs his branch, err, gun, and yells "bang bang bang" - but enemy still comes towards him.
Finally he draws out his, um, knife, and yells "cutty cutty cutty" - but the enemy still comes towards him.
"WHY DON'T YOU STOP???" he yells!
To which the enemy guy replies...
"TANK TANK TANK"
;-)

Posted by: cal2 at November 18, 2008 10:34 PM...like I said, it was an old army joke.
Yer giving away your age eh.
Posted by: tomax7 at November 18, 2008 10:47 PMHow about a paintball tournament. SDA readers vs the provincial NDP MLAs.
Posted by: K Stricker at November 18, 2008 10:48 PMNow the truth comes out, Kate isn't a "real" redneck since "real" rednecks process thier own meat LOL.
Posted by: the bear at November 18, 2008 10:49 PMVenison chops:
Tenderloin, or boneless backstrap
cut 3/4 -1 inch thick
Seared in hot garlic seasoned oil raee or medium rare
Serve hot with Cumberland sauce (red currant jelly with a bit of cinnamon)
And your favourite beverage.
So-o-o-o simple
CAUTION addictive!!!
Posted by: eastern paul at November 18, 2008 10:55 PMHey tomax....did 30 years with the RCMP...been in more hairy situations than I can recall. Been shot at numerous times (because I tended to be posted to high-risk duties). Do I regret it? I would have done it for free...I loved every minute of it.
The only regret I have is the stress it put on my wife. I remember one occasion when I was at my home, calling the office, ordering up bullet-proof vests and shotguns for a particularly urgent situation (this was before the advent of ERT), thinking that she was asleep...turned out she heard every word.
For 36 hours that we dealt with a barricaded suspect who had killed three people, she had no way of knowing whether I was alive or dead.
And the strange thing, for me personally, was that getting shot was not a fear of mine. My fear was getting stabbed...something about being cut with a bladed weapon was a horrible thought for me.
And the perverse thing was, getting stabbed or cut happenened to me three times.
Go figure...
Posted by: Bruce at November 18, 2008 11:01 PMIf I had to buy gas to drive all the way to saskabush I go broke
cheaper to buy saskabush and have UPS deliver it to ontario:-)))))
Count me in on the hunt Kate, sounds like a blast..
Posted by: The Progressive Indian at November 18, 2008 11:31 PM10K, what a milestone! Congrats!
My uncle owns Prairie Meats. I also wholeheartedly recommend it!
I am IN !
I've hunted waterfowl (OMG....OM..G) and sharptail grouse around Yorkton SK.
Can't wait to return.
An SDA hunting party?
Sounds great.
Venison notwithstanding, the sight of a large gaggle of heavily armed, rugged individualists all in one place would be balm for the soul in these troubled times.
The SDA version of the Western Standard cruise!
Heh.
Posted by: Mad Mike at November 19, 2008 4:55 AMBorn and raised in southern Sask. I haven't heard the scratch of stubble against a pant leg in many years. Count me in....
Congrats Kate!
Still got me beat by far... got just 2,457 at the moment... since 9/11/05... and I thought I was prolific...
Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at November 19, 2008 5:30 AMNot much of a hunter, but I'm sure I could whip up some good venison meat recipes!
BTW, Bruce, your statement "I would have done it for free...I loved every minute of it." is one I love to hear/read. I, too, am in a job where I can't believe they pay me to do this. I just wish that more people could find work they love so much.
Posted by: Johann at November 19, 2008 9:50 AM'maybe next year, we'll form a hunting party.'
Yea, but do you think the Liberals/NDP will let you hunt them? Heh.
10,000 posts doesn't surprise me.
You have one of the most entertaining, informative and interesting websites anywhere.
Just the right mix of everything, including humor.
That's why you get so many quality comments.
Great work Kate.
Congrats on both counts, Kate.
I make a melt-in-your-mouth delicious venison parmisiana. Be happy to share the recipe with you if you're interested. I'm only Italian by injection (married to one) but I cook like the real deal!
Congrats Kate on your 10,000. Keep them coming. Thanks. I still process my own kills and enjoy it very much.
Posted by: Merle Underwood at November 19, 2008 12:26 PMA hunting party sounds like fun. I haven't hunted in 6 years.
After a few years of marriage, I don't think my husband is as comfortable with me following him around with a loaded rifle as he used to be.
Hey Bear, "Now the truth comes out, Kate isn't a "real" redneck since "real" rednecks process thier own meat LOL."
Actually, if I was hunting again I'd take my meat in for processing. Last time I tried to do it myself I ended up with a ton of 'bou burger and sausage but not many cuts of meat that I could recognize.
btw, caribou beats deer anytime (if you can get it).
Posted by: Texas Canuck at November 19, 2008 2:27 PMTC - the opinions on the quality of caribou vary about as much as the number of caribou there are on the planet.
Posted by: the bear at November 19, 2008 6:35 PMHaven't fired a shot in my life, but I'd gladly crawl over broken glass with a 12 gauge pump, loaded with 3" magnum shells, to be commenter 10,000.
