Three days of sitting and still hunting Northern Ontario and nothing yet. Our camp has done very well this year but I have yet to click off the safety.
Heading down to N.Y. State this weekend where the hunting is usually easier.
Bowhunting back in Ontario after that and then the icefishing season begins.
I ate the last of the venison Jalepeno/cheese weiners yesterday.

Large doe, about 30 yards, bolt action Savage 30-30, no scope. Lung shot, died quickly, little spoilage.
So, a good morning, and it's back out for another (hopefully).
Posted by: Kate at November 17, 2008 3:00 PMKate, you must have been taught by an old-school meat hunter. A no-frills rifle and cartridge to get the job done and a nice tender doe. Shot placement in the boiler for a quick kill, gives a good blood trail if needed, and minimum meat wasted. Well done.
Talk about empowering!
Posted by: grok at November 17, 2008 3:19 PMOh and by the way, you tell people it's Bambi's mother you shot.
Posted by: grok at November 17, 2008 3:22 PMGreat, I feed 'em, you shoot 'em. But, as mentioned earlier, a gunshot by a responsible hunter is far better than a bumper shot or worse a bumper glance where they die slowly. As it is, it is hard to understand why populations remain so huge as fragile as these animals are. Their legs are no stronger than porcelain china. Our "Gang of 9" as my husband terms them, always have one member limping around with broken or sprained limbs. Right now we have a "Gang of 15." They're hell on the bird feeders. Cracked corn for the main event, bird feed for dessert.
Posted by: iowavette at November 17, 2008 3:44 PMLet me fix up that story for you Kate:
The deer was running full tilt through the trees about 150 yards away. I trained the sights of my trusty 30-30 and followed until the deer came to a small clearing. With perfect timing, i expertly placed a shot right in the boiler room, and the deer dropped like a stone.
Sheesh, no hunt is complete without a story like that.
Blatant lying is quite acceptable, dare i say even expected.
Anyway, I wish you continued good hunting.
Happy hunting, K.
Looks like you've got yourself quite a few days' worth of free meat on your plate there... I'm envious... I actually gotta pay for mine! Mebbe I oughta get meself a shootin' iron and fetch my own meat for a change. Save a lot of bucks by wasting just a couple... And, hey, I just had a brainstorm... why not grow my own veggies? Wow! Who'd a thunk such a smart idea? Now, that's something them big city liberal folks ought to be told about... they'll crap themselves silly at the brilliance of the concept of country livin' to save money on groceries, a cool idea seeing as food's gone up in price quite a bit... and then tell 'em that your grub ain't got no carbon footprint, save for the deers' farts! :)

Can I come and hunt within a mile of your house Kate? When you and your pals have filled all your tags. I got skunked down in Z24 last season and this season I've spent several days in Montrose PFRA seeing nothing until I missed my doe this morning.

So what is it to these loons when animals eat other animals. Or cute squirrels raid a robins nest just to kill the chicks or bust the eggs up?

I got a 6-pointer last week, with a Remington 870 12-ga and slug, 20 yards away. It's being cured now in the garage before heading in the freezer.
I for one won't shoot at any big game farther than 100 yards with a rifle, and 30 with a shotgun. If you want good meat you must have a quick, clean kill. The closer, the better.
Posted by: GreenNeck at November 18, 2008 8:36 AMAs Dick Cavett recently commented, "has anyone observed that hunting animals with high-powered guns could only be defined as sport if both sides were equally armed?"
So, when does Bambi get a chance to even the score?
Although I am an animal lover who has no interest in hunting whatsoever and doesn't particularly have happy feelings about it, I will put about 3 planets distance between myself and the leftards here.
So long as you aren't hunting endangered species (and deer are anything but,) and you aren't wasting the meat, there shouldn't be any question about it. To each their own. You want to go out and kill sh*t, go ahead.
Two, any time you have wild animals in areas where they are legally hunted, you may get lucky and have an easy kill but you sure as hell aren't shooting "fish in a barrel." Animals are not as stupid as liberals. They learn. When they know an area has hunters, they become wary of people and tend to make it much more difficult to hunt them. Animals in protected parks, etc, are not the same thing.
And shooting ones dog is not the same thing as shooting your next meal. Only a retard or other liberal would make such an idiotic statement.
As for the other side, I suspect that there is more BS than actual carcasses being passed around on this post… lol. "The fish was THIS big!!"

Its called a feat of arms, TJ.
I myself have never shot a deer. But when I used to shoot, before I came home to Trudeaupia and was forbidden, I used to hunt the elusive 100 yard bullseye. At one time I was in such good practice that I could hit a quarter at 100 yards pretty reliably with iron sights. This is an achievement of mine, a feat of arms I am justly proud of.
Finding and hitting a deer properly is harder than hitting a quarter five out of five at 100 yards. Deer can move, you see.
Feats of arms earn you bragging rights.

As aptly demonstrated by the lefttards who swoon endlessly over 0's media win on this site.
Like little ones left unsupervised - they'll play in their own shit and love it. Excusable when a toddler does it, damn sickening and dangerous when an emotionally depraved adult does it.
And there legions of them, from top down in every institution that affects our lives.
Phantom,
I shot skeet once. Not easy. I did shoot 50% out of 50 rounds. I was told that was pretty good for a first time with a gun in my hand although I was frustrated at the time.
The only other time I've had a gun in my hand I was taken to a range by a soldier and put on a range with a C7 with a scope with a little red dot in it (not a projected dot from a laser, just a lit-up dot in the scope itself.) They had both stationary and moving targets. The one was cool. They had a city projected and you had to shoot the moving people.
I tied for first in a group which had a good number of hunters. The soldiers wanted to sign me up for sniper school (there were mostly kidding but were definitely impressed and were serious about trying to get me into the reserves - I declined.)
If I'm shooting at stuff, targets or terrorists are my preferred options.

O/T
Sorry Warwick for an obvious misunderstanding on my part above. Seems I'm also affected with the O effect. :( -esh!
I ate so much deer growing up, I don't like it much any more. I remember almost 50 years ago, getting up early with my dad. We went to the shed with a big knife, and he sliced some thin steaks off the hanging deer. A cast iron frying pan, and some butter, and it seemed like things were as they should be. I still remember that smell like it was yesterday.
My dad hunted for survival, it was that or steal. He'd usually go for a head shot to save on spoilage. The 22 was his favourite weapon because the shells were cheap. As I got old enough to hunt, things began to change. My dad didn't teach me how to hunt, because he wanted me to have a different life than he had. Well, he got his wish, but I almost feel cheated sometimes. I've hunted, and killed deer, but it's always felt like I'm out of my element. I feel unworthy to take part in the big hunt.
I'm glad when I see that people are keeping the tradition alive. Who knows, maybe I'll get back into it one of these years. The deer population is at least 5 times what it was 35 years ago when I started hunting. At least it is in the maritimes, where I grew up. No one down there shoots them anymore. They really are getting to be pests.

By the way, "real", the only person I know of who still uses the insipid "m'kay" is a slovenly neurotic Floridian known for squatting on First Nations reserves so that she can qualify for free Canadian medicare.

BTW: please inform my Jewish friends who call Bernie a “Kapo” how “offensive” they’re being, m’kay?
"Does the moose feel it less than the dog? Does it deserve death more? Please explain."
Ok, pain's lower, I'll give it a try, in this country we hunt wild game; then we partake of it's bounty of nourishing food for us. In my neck of the woods the left over 'remains' are sent to those in the market, antlers, hides, hooves, etc. Actually little is 'garaged' and sometimes a lucky large dog or two, gets a large leg joint to chew on for a few days.
We do not eat captive dogs from cages, nor do I believe do we eat dogs period, equating the two is simple minded.
By the way, young moose steak is one of the finest meat I've ever tasted.
Although reindeer roast is a close second.
We also eat buffalo, wapiti, beef, pork, chicken, fish, seafood and etc, wanna go and inventory their 'feelings'?
Could be a good job for a MSM journalist though;
"Here, little shrimpy shrimpy - how do you feel about being human food?" ...
Oh dear, you're about to be cooked!
Has this ever happened to you before?"
Be sure to send in the clip with the moose's take on things, will 'ya?

Now as many of you know, I am a VietNam vet and
I have killed my share of men. Kate's deer story
reminds me of the time I had to go mano y mano
against a siberian tiger somewhere south of the
DMZ. To make a long story short, lets just say
It was a bit touch and go for awhile. Still, Kate
has killed like a champion and I for one find
the thought of kate covered in steaming blood
and offal stirring in a way most carnal.
