I applaud the Canadian media's decision to keep word of CBC journalist Mellisa Fung's abduction from Kabul on October 12th a secret until her safe release earlier today. They they placed the well-being of an individual human being over the public's supposed "right to know" every detail under the sun. They refused to allow their own mandate to report newsworthy events to potentially endanger a Canadian citizen in peril abroad.
Well done.
Now, if only they took into account the consequences of their reporting in every such circumstance. But I guess that's just too much to ask for anyone not a Canadian journalist they know personally...
Posted by Damian at November 8, 2008 4:18 PMHypocrisy thy name is Journalism...Speculating on the strength of future Taliban offensives in the "fighting season" is fair game....bemoaning the "fact" that this fight can't be won is the norm...jeapordizing the lives of our FIGHTING troops by up-playing the political rift at home is O.K.....but when one of your hand picked talking heads gets into trouble a whole different set of journalistic principles is applied......Nice.

Posted by: syncrodox at November 8, 2008 6:50 PMThey haven't learned anything. This approach was one that the media already understood. Kidnappings aren't new, and neither are kidnapped journalists.
It happened this way because it was one of them. No missionary, aid worker, contractor, soldier, or diplomat will be accorded the same treatment. That's almost money in the bank.
Kinda makes one wonder what else they're reluctant to report on , out of self-interest .
Posted by: Bill D. Cat at November 8, 2008 7:40 PMI want to know how much moola was handed over for her release? The Commie Broadcasting Corps did not do this out of the goodness of their hearts. That is a guarantee.
Posted by: Justthinkin at November 8, 2008 7:57 PMMoola?
"CBC brass" ransomed themselves with pot.
CBC's Tobacco Lounge is now a Grow-Op.
...-
"CBC brass split $1M pot
Crown corporation gave bonuses to execs last year, records show" (sun)
"oh, but this time is diiiiiiferent!"
Behold the true, scummy heart of the CBC. When its one of theirs, they bend Heaven and Earth to get the poor bastard out. When its only a Canadian soldier, or a French humanitarian, or ANY BODY ELSE, they don't give a crap. We've got ours out, too bad for you.
Just remember, CBC doofs: what goes around, comes around. Its a rule of the universe. You do the right thing because its the right thing to do , or the universe will take a great big fracking dump on you.
Posted by: The Phantom at November 8, 2008 9:16 PMThe MSM. First they save the planet (possibly the entire universe) by ensuring *their* candidate wins, now they pat themselves on the back for keeping quiet about a story that could have harmed one of their own.
Is there anything the MSM can't do?
Posted by: PiperPaul at November 8, 2008 9:20 PMScrew a mainstream journalist.
They're poseurs and we all know it.
Fung or Fong is alive and well..good for her.
But I still really don't care..
Screw a mainstream journalist.

Problem is,they are screwing us,without a kiss, with their biased reporting
Posted by: Justthinkin at November 8, 2008 10:25 PMI liked the reference to Bob Fife. I love to loath this guy. He is the epitomy of the scumbag journalist. "We all know that there are some knuckledraggers in the Conservative caucus." I'd love to hire him just so I could fire his ass.
Posted by: a different Bob at November 8, 2008 10:43 PMI don't understand ... why was the story suppressed in Canada, but not in Afghanistan and possibly in the rest of the world?
Why was it necessary to keep it secret from Canadians ... what was the risk making it public?
I would have thought the CBC could have used the kidnapping as political fodder against the Harper Conservatives during the election.
Something doesn't add up here.
Posted by: Observant at November 8, 2008 11:31 PMYup. Complete 180 degree turn. From being the primary publicists for deliberately staged beheadings and children and Down syndrome women exploding and what not, all in the name of spreading Islamofacism's message, they suddenly decide that a media ban may actually help to preserve someone's life.
hypocrites
Posted by: the bear at November 9, 2008 12:06 AMWhy dont one of you arm chair journalists pack up and give us the real story from A-Stan? If the MSM isn't giving you the straight news, how about going and finding out for yourselves? No? ... figured as much ...
Posted by: herb at November 9, 2008 8:45 AMWhy don't you go Norm? I'll pay for your ticket.
No? ... figured as much ...
Sorry should have said herb.
Posted by: Sarnia Jim at November 9, 2008 10:07 AMThis story was reported on Hong Kong TV tonight. Harper said no ransom was paid, yeh right. Question, is she a muslim and if not why was she wearing a headscarf when being interviewed by the Canadian ambassador?
Posted by: Pissdoff at November 9, 2008 12:48 PMWell everyone must agree the CBC is very good at omitting what they don't want the public to know.
Posted by: Western Canadian at November 9, 2008 1:04 PMHonestly, is there nothing y'all won't find something to whine about?
Posted by: Vargo at November 9, 2008 7:25 PMSpeaking of CBC urinating away all your tax dollars for disingenious purposes, it has just been reported that CBC will be "partnering with Al Gore" to bring his TV network to Canada.
I didn't make this up.
BBC been quiet about Stephen Harper lately- or is it because I try to tune it out, when liberal spouse has it on>
Too bad Harper seems to be leaving them to their old ways. Spending tax payers dollars. Obama all the time yet!
