2008 US Election Results

Open Thread as first polls begin to close.

You're supposed to ignore exit polls, and with good reason, but these are entertaining, nonetheless.

Stephen Taylor is liveblogging with an electoral map as icing.

Update - 8:45 eastern

Well, as indicators stand now (Florida not good, other battlegrounds tight), look at the bright side - the big spending, big government Republicans are getting what they deserve tonight, albeit for all the wrong reasons. The people get the government they deserve, or so it is said, and with the even bigger spending Democrat-led Congress posting 8% approval ratings, maybe it's more of the same they wanted all along.

Conservative renewal south of the border is long overdue, and my hunch is that the combination of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are just the folks to pull it off. I only hope our economy can withstand the protectionist winds about to blow our way.

Though, every time the networks compare McCain's vote totals to Bush '04, I wonder if they wouldn't have done better had W. been back on the ticket. I miss him already.

Oh, and I nearly forgot the best part. Tomorrow, the election over and awash in red ink, the slashing at newspapers and networks begins in earnest.

Update: Good pre-postmortem here

Update: A glimmer of hope: Norm Coleman (who led the fight to investigate Oil For Food) has pulled a little ahead of Al Franken in Minnesota with 50% of the polls reporting.

John Derbyshire compares Obama to a different history making politician. And quite rightly.

OMG I can’t watch………..imagine prez Obamba, sitting on the whitehouse porch in a rocking chair puffing a cigar and sipping sasperella with his faithful hound dog Cracker by his side. Out on the expanse of white house lawn are a hundred illegal Mexicans hand snipping the imported grass………..”My my my, we sure dose do things differently around these parts” “boy go gets me my shot gun, I think we gotta white bo reporta crossin my property” then off runs Bill Clinton to fetch the rocksalt and Italian made Bernelli………..

Wake up – No not yet there’s still a little time……………………..

I really believe that Obama will be remembered as one of the greatest leaders of all time. I just find it really sad that when that time comes and the rest of the world celebrates that fact. All of you ignorant, mean spirited, pessimistic nuts will be too stubborn to ever admit it. That is why the majority of people have such little respect for the extreme right. You people are so angry and unaccepting of others and there rights and beliefs, yet ironically, the majority of you are devote Christians. It makes all of you look like hypocrites and it is very, very pathetic.

Will the "African Americans" and other "minorities" in the States get the monkey off their back if Obama wins.
I sure hope so because I'm sick of the constant whining.
Interestingly though I read that it was the Democrats that took away the Black's right to vote and to hold public office after the Republicans gave them that "equality" at the end of the civil war.
How soon we forget...
Or do we change the facts of history to support our own communist social dillusions?

It used to be that other countries looked up to the US on how to run rational elections.
Don’t look so anymore. Clearly the socialists/fascists and demagogues that cater to the freeloaders have adopted the corrupt practices of the banana republics and are very successfully running everything to their advantage supported apparently by a number of judges.
This is incredible; the last remaining bastion of free people is crumbling like house made of clay. This is not due to the republicans in general though it is aided by the idiot week kneed republicans in the congress. The full force of the socialist agenda is in motion and seem to be in favor. This is beyond belief in the land of the supposedly free.
Have the Americans lost the will to live free?
Let us see. Obama actually said to Joe the plumber that he, Obama, will distribute the earnings of Joe’s as he sees fit. The election is not over yet, though as per popular opinion among the opinionated, Obama will win. Have Americans become as corrupt as most of the world countries to take from people that work for living and give it to those that could not bother to get out of bed in the morning?
Do not panic though, thing will get better in the long run, in the short run it appears that Americans need to self flagellate to feel the tyranny of socialism. In the long run the world would have learned that socialism is bankrupt concept and amendments will be made, though first, suffering must take place.

Have the Americans lost the will to live free?

Is the majority of the US population even really “Americans” anymore? I believe that door was left open far too wide and for far too long to remember what it was like to live in the America that was respected and loved. It more and more resembles a patchwork of ridiculously large segregated and gated crime infested cities surrounded by struggling towns and farmlands. Not so unlike Mexico anymore and driving dangerously close to Zimbabwe, but look at the demographics what a surprise. A few fly over farming states that will close ranks when the time to preserve what little heritage they have remaining comes. And then some isolated islands of “real wealth” in elitist neighborhoods and communities that can pack up and leave with their offshore money at any time (and they will). The wealth abandoned socialist America will be a place for a billion more peoples around the globe than the eternally hateful Islam to distain.

How many people are buying tickets to holiday in Johannesburg South Africa this year?

Posted by: Knight 99 at November 4, 2008 8:27 PM

Throughout the history of the world there have been countries that have "allowed" leaders to ascend. History has revealed to us which leaders were worthy of their position. History also reveals which of these leaders came to be great and those that were not-so-great. In many countries on our planet those that came to power, once there, were impossible to remove. At least in America we know that two years from now there will be Congressional election and two years after that, Presidential elections. In our way of doing things, there is always hope. God Bless us all.

Well big ben...not everyone here is 'devout' Christians, but I will speak for myself. One word ...discernment.
Some of us just don't fall for the Obama mystique.

You describe Obama as a leader...I suppose...in a pied piper kind of way.

And if the 'rest of the world' favours Obama how can that be a good thing? The fact that the rest of the world generally hates all things American should give you a clue..
Yes 'their' rights and beliefs are important, and so is liberty and freedom. A government that 'takes care' of the people is bound to take away some freedom, rights and liberty.
That is why some of us aren't falling for the Big O.

Watching the results with stomach churning disgust, here's hoping the losers that threw their lot with the socialist Empty Suit - the union households, cowardly seniors, the black entitlement slob on YOU Tube that thinks he will pay her mortgage and gas her car, the little numbskull future employment seekers that were team Obama on campuses(goood luck, you juvenile twits, you are screwed and too dumb to know it) - have their heads handed to them in about a year when the rubber meets the road and the Dems destroy our economy. You simply can't promise and spend what isn't there, crush the efficient and innovative, and salvage an economy in recession.

Posted by: penny at November 4, 2008 9:01 PM

Well, it's over

Interestingly, the US will elect a man who has never been through adversity, and has little experience, and has been on a golden road his whole life. He is very intelligent, and extraordinarily well-spoken.

The man who didn't win has been through terrible experiences, the likes of which I cannot imagine. And could not even imagine. I feel I am suffering if my coffee is either too hot or cold.

The man who didn't win has experience in governing, and has reconciled with the nation that he attacked, and in which he was imprisoned for 5.5 years.

The man who didn't win has integrity, and a tremendous drive. I flew across one time zone last weekend, and I'm totally shredded - and I'm in my mid 40-s. I don't know how he could do this campaigning

The man who won - he has put his young family in the spotlight. It is indeed historic. The world will be happy. The previously disenfranchised will be happy. But he cannot deliver most of his promises.

But has there ever been a goal other than just to win?

Posted by: Ebla at November 4, 2008 9:04 PM

Surprisingly as it may sound the majority demographics did not change that drastically. Certainly, there are more of people from around the world, the thing that boggles the mind, why do these people move to a free country to be free, and then turn around to enable those that would rule over them.
No doubt the US is still number one in freedom, however after this election it may be reduced by a massive quantum.
Watch for this, tyranny is coming, in the US, before this generation is out.
Those with corrupt socialist mind, not unlike those in Canada, will support drug culture, culture of death in the entertainment as opposed to the qualities of the renaissance. It is far easier to rule stoned mind than an aware one.
The world is starved for renaissance. As it is, there are not currently people that would be able overwhelm the corrupt class that rules today. It needs someone like Reagan, Thatcher and perhaps to the surprise of many, Gorbachev, less his communist ideas.
Bear in mind that your agent here does not claim to be without sin.

Look at the bright side, those who care get to criticize the Democrats for all their stupid moves and complain about every thing they do for a change. The Liberals won't be able to blame the Republicans for anything, but they will anyway.

I guess Obama supports partial birth abortion and fetal stem cell research, just sad.

No one noticed that oil prices rose today. IMHO this occurred in expectation that the new President will not know what to do in the Persian Gulf or do something stupid there and create uncertainty in the oil supply. Likewise he may just decide not to drill offshore. In any event we are seeing the first of what will be the many negatives of the Obama presidency.
In the immortal words of Brian of The Family Guy, that way they (the electorate) will learn. Watch for an only four year presidency with no re-election.

The most dangerous politician is one who is determined to make a difference.

On another note, America, and unfortunately Canada by default, will be paying for this for years to come. We're still paying for the the mistake with Trudeau.

The parallels between the two are many. Trudeau paraded around in a Nazi helmet during the second world war and hob-knobed with Fidel. Obama hangs out with domestic terrorists.

It's too bad the promise of free money and the propaganda from the liberal/left wing media led the U.S. up to this moment.

Posted by: Mike T at November 4, 2008 9:22 PM

"He is very intelligent, and extraordinarily well-spoken."

I'm not sure that either of these are true. He is certainly clever, but that does not necessarily make him intelligent as to his "extrordinarily well-spokenness", I would say no - his speeches are mostly homilies, empty and vapid.

Through the magic of a rich language and the tragedy of a failed educational system (Canada too, since the early '70s), his words fall on a largely illiterate audience. 21st century purchase of Manhattan from the natives, for a few bucks worth of verbal beads.

Finally Palin can go back to humiliation in the snow, at least she'll still have her own little dynasty to run into the ground (until her next election day, and it's unlikely that the Alaskan electorate will treat such a pathetic loser and embarrassment to the state favourably)

Obama is born a leader. Like most leaders, Obama has to start somewhere. I'm pretty sure, Obama will emerge as a more successful leader than George W. Bush. After an Obama win, the Republican Party will be plunged into one of the worst turmoil in political history, with the party members hating George W. Bush and John McCain tremendously.

slevin: "Oh, you miserable f***s, this is so sweet to see you wither and die"

ARE YOU KIDDING? Die? I dont' think so.

If Obama becomes Pres., he's in for a rude awakening, not to mention a rough ride. He seems always to have had lots of funds for his initiatives (a little shady, just where he got all his money...), but the public coffers are drying up as the economy shrinks. He'll be sorely challenged to deliver all of the promises he's made.

'Natch, we'd like to see John McCain win--because he's a man of principle and integrity, unlike Barak Obama whose past is foggy and suspect--but a loss will mean that he and Sarah Palin won't be called upon to "fix" everything. They won't be kicked around by the MSM, which is something I'll be glad to see.

Now, if the MSM wants to kick BO around ... well, c'est la vie, salada ... couldn't happen to a nicer guy ... ;-)

Obama's win was inevitable after an incompetent and self-serving Republican kick at the can in the past 8 years, combined with the economic disaster that occurred under their watch (regardless of the fact that it may not have been their direct fault). Meh, in the big picture of history, this is one election out of dozens, more historic than some, less than others.

What, we never had Demoncat presidents before? Meh.

Let us hope US conservatism can find renewal in the wilderness of the next 4 years and come back ready to improve the US, not run it further into the ground, and let us hope that 4 years of unfettered European-style elitocratic government will remind Americans of what they have and how much better it is than the alternative.

I actually believe that the Democrats did NOT make good use of their time in the wilderness in the past decade. They are really the same old retreads, permitted to return to power temporarily because of the weakness of the opposition, not through any credit of their own. They have no real vision, no popular leaders except Obama, and it is saying something that his margin of victory is so relatively small despite all the advantages he enjoyed in this election.

A few comments -

First, I think that George Bush will go down in history as one of America's greatest presidents. He effectively stopped Islamic fascism from its spread into the West, and turned it back into a struggle in the Middle East between tribalism and democracy - with the latter necessarily winning.

I am presuming Obama will win this day's presidential race - a shallow, unpatriotic self-absorbed narcissistic individual who is both using the Democratic Party and being used by them. His naive agenda of redistribution, a state engineered socialism goes against the very grain of American individualism. I predict that this agenda will fail.

But, his 'win' will have two results. I think he's being elected because the American people are fed up with being the Workhorse and Saviour of the globe, fed up with doing the work of the coorrupt and useless UN, fed up with being viewed as responsible for helping out any and all - and then, vilified for their actions. They want out; they want isolationism.

If there's trouble in Iran, I'd bet the US is going to tell the UN, France, Germany, China, Canada - You go fix it. Why should we do it all?

But how is the world, which has since WWII, conveniently set up anti-Americanism as a basic political infrastructure of each nation, such as Canada, France, Germany, UK and everywhere else, how is the world going to act towards Obama? Are they actually going to start to like the USA and Americans? When their very own political infrastructure is based on continuous anti-Americanism?

As for the 'black vs white' issue in the US, and Obama certainly played that card - this win will mean it's over. No more self-definition of 'victimhood'. That's over.

So, I've got two question. How long before the American people reject Democratic ultra-socialism. I give it two years.

And, how are the political infrastructures of the world going to deal with their love for Obama? Can they continue their anti-Americanism, which has been such a necessary component of their own political structures?

Think of Canada. Anti-Americanism has been a basic component of the Liberal ideology for years. What's going to happen? Who and what will the world hate?

Posted by: ET at November 4, 2008 10:04 PM

Considering...

1. How much money the Obama campaign spent to win this match

2. That the media didn't even pretend to be objective and were 100% in Obama's corner

3. The general dislike of Bush

4. The huge crowds that turned out to worship His Almighty

...it says a great deal that Obama didn't do better.

That WOULD fundamentally change the calculations for the future.

It's a worrisome thought.

Posted by: Lori at November 4, 2008 10:17 PM

"Obama is born a leader."

If anybody thinks this is true, you miss the power of the entertainment and marketing industries to manipulate an election. All that happened here was the DNC selected a puppet to front the org and turned the media loose with him. Of all of the possible VPs they could have chosen, Joe Biden? Why? Because he represents the most stable connected democrat that can be counted on not to steal the thunder of the market icon. And for those that think Obama is about "hope and change" you need to know that he will not write the politics, the DNC will. He is, almost literally, a puppet on a string.

Now, imagine - the One, who has never faced comparable pressures in his life, who has "moved on" from all his previous activites of modest consequence (the results of which have been obscured by irrelevance and partisanship)...

...now, he has a 24/7 spotlight upon him, slipping the responsibility is no longer possible.

Train wreck.

This is gonna be painful.

Interesting post (yet again) ET.

Agree with most of what you said other than the saying GWB will be one of the greatest presidents. I think he will be viewed as more of a mixed bag. Ironically good on foreign policy due to his Gulf doctrine, but ho-hum on the domestic front.

The left, including the MSM, have been spending too much time hating and promoting hatred of Bush to get a good objective reading anytime in the next 5-10 years.

Interesting point on the black vs white victimology. Do you think Obama will try to push the reparations angle or alienate "center-right wing" whities?

Posted by: chris at November 4, 2008 10:41 PM

The day I heard Rush had signed an 8 year deal for 400 million I knew the Dems were going to win the Presidency.

Rush has now become the defacto opposition voice of America, again. He is the 2nd most important figure in Amerikka now behind Big O. Also upside for the bloggers and internet since the msm are done and won't be scooping us.

The Republicans didn't deserve to win anything after the mistakes and corruption which were made in the past 8 years by them. There are striking similarities between the LPC and RNC.

Anyone have any stock market advice?

ET, I disagree entirely with this bit, "...a struggle in the Middle East between tribalism and democracy - with the latter necessarily winning."

There is no "necessarily winning" in any conflict. These are matters largely of determination and persistence. It is entirely unclear that the democratic nations of the world have the endurance for this struggle, and in the absence of the U.S. it is manifestly obvious that they do not.

dkjones - with regard to Bush, I do refer to his foreign policy which took most of his time and attention. It is and remains, a remarkable strategy - and, in my view, absolutely correct.

As for Obama and reparations, I have no idea; such an option is, I feel, ignorant and naive. After all, at some time or other, all peoples have suffered variously, and to assume that the descendents of these original sufferers, should somehow receive compensation is a rather strange view of biological hereditary processes.

Can you imagine, Australians now insisting that Great Britain, which deported many of their ancestors as criminals, should now receive compensation? Or what about the compensations due to Europe, for Islamic nations sacking their cities? Or...the list is endless and ultimately irrelevant.

What I think will be interesting is to see how long it will take before America rejects Democratic socialism. I give it, as I said, two years at the most.

I also wonder how the Democrats and Obama will get along. As I said, each has been using the other. Obama's world view is, like that of all narcissists, focused only on himself. The Democratic Party, however, has a broader agenda.

And, I'm also interested in how the various leftist political parties will deal with the loss of America as a key platform to hate.

I am happy that America has a black president, finally, but it is one thing to break down barriers and something quite different to control what is on the other side. I hope that I am wrong but it looks like America has gone for the quick fix. Kind of like being upset with your wife, going to the bar and picking up the pretty one . The next morning things can get really ugly, really fast.

Posted by: wallyj at November 4, 2008 11:03 PM

Glenn, wait a bit, you won't have buy a cow. You'll be provided a small herd to raise, and share with your neighbours. You'll heat your home and cook your food with the methane and dried "chips", grow your vegetables in the manure, make exquisite leather coats and shoes from the hides, make beautiful music from the horns.

Of course, you'll have to buy the hay, which will subject to the futures market, and will compete directly with corn futures for export.

Posted by: Skip at November 4, 2008 11:07 PM

cgh - I don't think you undertand my phrasing. I'm not saying that democracy wins without effort.

The reason why democracy must necessarily win is because in a society with an industrial economy and a population in the multimillions, the only political system that is viable is democracy. Why?

Because a large population in the multimillions can only be sustained by an industrial economy. And an industrial economy requires a middle class. The middle class is made up of people who are not inhibited from innovation by a rigid tribal ideology and kinship obligations, who are flexible both intellectually and in mobility, ie, who can move both physically and mentally.

Tribalism is a no-change ideology, binding people to kinship obligations and unchanging worldviews. It functions in a no-growth economy, a non-industrial economy.

That's what I meant by 'necessarily'. If those ME states don't move into democracy, and retain tribalism, the result of such a dysfunctional system is fascism.

He he, It’s funny how all the lefty trolls come out of the woodwork to gloat over the fact that America is well on its way to Socialist ruin. It goes to prove that misery truly does love company.

Socialist or not, the US the “real America” was well on its way to economic ruin with its open borders and easy credit and had lost its soul long ago during the Vietnam war and the flowers in its hair. It has no credibility as a military might and its enemies know that well……..like socialist Europe and trolling lefty SDA bloggers.

Only the greatest fools alive would gloat about their own demise, but then again these are the people that have lived in closets all their secret lives, and have avoided the natural selection that a struggling society would have wrought on them…….so they survive and thrive on the backs of conservative values and repeat the process of rotting great societies from within. They are self flagellating creatures rotten to their naturally deceptive core, driven by their jealousy, knowing that they themselves could never have achieved or survived any other era but this one. We piss with nature too much.

The November, 2008 contracts that closed today had the largest open interest in history. Telephone call options were purchased by Democrats to get out the Democratic vote and by the manufacturing sector to get out the manufactured vote. Both were used to put Republicans in their place. Final point spread to be determined by the electoral college later tonight. Delivery will take place on January 20, 2009. The November, 2012 contract opens tomorrow.

I've been sick to my stomach watching these results tonight. I cannot believe that the Americans are willing to give up so much to make a historical statement.

We had Trudeumania and they have Obamamania - two very charismatic marxists. We learned our lesson - I think, and they are about to learn theirs. The difference is we kept ours in Power for 17 yrs. or so and they can only keep theirs for two - four year terms. To be honest that Obama will do more damage to them in four than Trudeau did to us. They will get the Fairness doctrine, we have the HRC. The Obambots are stiffling their freedom of speech and the gulags are already built throughout their fair land. They will get socialized medicine - we get our doctors back. Nafta will be reopened and Ontario bites the dust. Their taxes will go up and their economy will tank. If they are lucky they will stop the nonsense before they become part of the New World order and drag us along by default.

I really hope our Prime Minister is watching all this closely. We don't want the Amero which the DNC will try to force on us, We do not want to be part of the USSA. We can sell our oil to another. We can put our auto plants to better use by building our own planes, jeeps, tanks etc. and protect ourselves like we did during WW11, and put Southern Ont. back to work. Course we will have to get rid of that little Napolionic Premier that the majority seemed to want so much. When will they ever learn.

Posted by: dolly at November 4, 2008 11:39 PM

If Obamo wins, it will be an historic event in the U.S. The first time a black President was ever elected ( in fact he's the only black senator in the U.S. ) but also proves that the majority of the U.S. are not racist and have actually picked the best man for the job. ( McCain graduated from his class as the 3rd last among 500 students ). McCain was born into a priviledged family and Obama was not. It will prove that you can become all you can be, against all odds. Of course, McCain, had a lot going against him. The legacy of the worst Presidency in the history of the U.S.
.
There is so much on his shoulders. Not only does he have to worry about being assininated because of his race/colour by racist ring wing nuts but he somehow is expected to repair 8 years of Republican damage to their economy, foreign policy and reputation, debt reduction, salvage the middle class so they can contribute to society with tax rates at least as low as the rich, stem the bleeding of jobs to low wage/slave wages, start cleaning up the environment ( instead of "drill baby drill" ) stupidity, and help all those Americans without any support structures like health insurance. He will not be able to do that in 4 years. God Bless Barack Obama

"But their sneering childishness is not for us; and now that they've won, they won't be able to control it even in victory. This is an unlovely party filled with unlovely people, as America's about to find out once the Obama pixie dust wears off."

- National Review

Didn't take long.

The Republicans were defeated by Bush (whether deserved or not) and McCain's age. However depressing, it's not surprising.

For a short while Obama will govern from the centre. He has little choice. And for a short while, 'the ugly American' invective will dissipate. Americans will become accepted again.

However, Obama's utter lack of experience, narcissism and ideology will be the stumbling block in his path and he'll fall hard. The love-in will be over as America wakes up and realizes that it is now a welfare state with a controlled economy. That in horror, the very thing it accused Canada and Europe of being, it has become. A socialist state.

And the Democrats will pay a heavy price.

Either that or I'm completely wrong. The nation has become so inebriated on vacuous celebrity, meaningless rhetoric, lies and revisionist history, that it's hopelessly now in the closing chapters of a once great dream.

Now that he's won and given that his mother was white, I wish they'd quit calling him the first black president. It's an annoying lie. What's wrong with being half white?

Posted by: irwin daisy at November 4, 2008 11:52 PM

ET,

Did not mean to imply that reparations made any sense. Rather, as a voting block, I think you will find Blacks voted for race, and many will be expecting to finally get some payback for "200 years of slavery" or some such nonsense.

Now Obama can either give in to this sentiment to keep the guilty elite liberal and black vote, thus alienating the (majority) whites OR Not give in and be labelled, ahh what's the term, an Uncle Tom.

As for Bush, I think history will be harsh on his domestic policy and therefore he won't be among the greatest presidents.

I just really hope, that Obama doesn't "change" the emerging victory in Iraq and maybe Af-stan.

Fox has to carry a big piece of the blame for this. By casting a black president on two seasons of "24" they made people a little more at ease with the idea. The fact that the character was a strong and effective leader convinced many people that a black man could handle the job.

In my opinion, the actor who played the president on "24" (the first guy) would likely make a better president than Obama.

Hey dp, you have this wrong. It had nothing to do with race. This has to do with Philosophy. Their new president wants to spread the others wealth around. That's marxism. He wants to open up the U.S constitution and replace it with what? He wants to bring back conscription for 18 year old guys and gals. He wants all citizens to put in service to their nation doing what? He wants to set up a militia for homeland security - for what purpose? He has a Senate and Congress that is top heavy with liberal democrats. He can pass whatever he wants without interference. He wants to take away their 2nd amemdment that was put in place by the founding fathers to stop a government from doing all the things he has already proclaimed through this past year. He and his cronies want to pass the fairness doctrine which stifles free speech, and shuts up any opposing viewpoint. He buddies up to lowlife like Ayres, Kalidi and others. He's scarier than hell. Iran should be celebrating tonight and we know Chavez and Castro are. Crap he's one of their own. And Comrad Obama lives right next door. These aren't the Democrats of John F. Kennedy era, this is a whole new breed. Pray for America - pray for us. This started under LBJ and has become progressively worse these are what is known as the progressives. Not, that the new breed Republicans are much better but a hell of a lot less scary.

America survived four years of Jimmy Carter, and eight of Bill Clinton. She survived decades & decades of Democratic Congresses. She will survive four years of Barack Obama paired with another heavily Democratic Congress.

This election was about the self-destruction of the Republican party, taken out back and shot by the American people for being STUPID. The Republicans must rebuild, must become truly conservative - no more Republicans In Name Only (RINO) aka LOSERS, no more tacking to the center or the left, no more "borrow and spend" fiscal policies. Only a truly conservative Republican party will be fit to win power again.

Posted by: Ian in NS at November 5, 2008 1:42 AM

After the euphoria of Obama's win wears off there remains the grim task of leadership. It will take more than flowery rhetoric and meaningless platitudes to explain away why all of those election goodies are now not possible. Obama's handlers have already acknowledged that his more gullible supporters are in for a rude awakening. But hey, leave that unpleasantry for tomorrow. My instinct is that Obama will prove to be more of a cautious incrementalist than a radical reformer. I think that he will prove to be the Paul Martin of US history. That's right he'll be a centrist Mr. Dithers. A radical reformer will see only one term, every President wants two. I also think that he'll have a tough time reining in the really dangerous radical Democrats in Congress such as Speaker Pelosi especially if they get a veto proof majority. If it turns out that Obama, Pelosi and Reid decide to take America on a trip over to the far left side of politics it will result in an unprecedented political train wreck. The country is very much divided in spite of all of the "bipartisan" mumbo jumbo. Thankfully, there will only be two more years until the mid terms.

The Obamessiah will be a total disaster as president and will make Jimmy Carter look like a genius. I hope the US will survive the dark ages that are about to come but it would be prudent to prepare for a very different world. Look for the militia movement in the US to make a very large scale comeback.

Best case scenario: an asteroid hits Washington when all democratic politicians are in town. Aside from that hopefull scenario the future looks very bleak for the next few years.

The transition is going well -- Obama is going hunting with Dick Cheney this weekend.

It is interesting that the final decision from the courts has not yet been decided as to Obama's birth place. Although Hawaiian officials confirm that a Hawaiian COLB exists for Obama, they have not released the details about Box 7C on the COLB. Box 7C on the Hawaiian COLB contains the actual place of birth (may include a foreign country such as Kenya or the state of HI).

Here is a youtube video showing his grandmother stating that he was born in Kenya.

Has anyone seen this piece here about Malcolm X being Obama's father? If true, one could say that the electorate marked their ballots with an X today. It really would be nice to get this whole issue of his birth certificate settled.

What sore losers! No congratulations for Obama?

I didn't really watch the election last night so I'm just finding out now. Checked out a video bite of Karl Rove talking about the future of the Republicans on Fox News - he says some good stuff - it's also interesting that, if I remember correctly, his prediction about the final numbers is pretty good.

The one thing that I think for sure is that Obama is a brilliant political strategist. His goal in life was to become President, he learned the system and came up with a plan to use the system to get to the Presidency (this system included using the media, using race issues, using the left elite, using unions, etc.). He (and his team) came up with a plan and they sort of stuck to it (although they adapted pretty quick as necessary). They knew who they were going to target (the states, what the states needed to hear; the audience, what they needed to hear - like health care- environment, etc.).

For Obama, picking Uncle Joe might have been good. Uncle Joe is going to stay out of the way (someone like Hillary would not) and he does sort of have foreign affairs knowledge. Also, Americans have little fear of Obama kicking the bucket.

Guys like Ayers, Wright, etc., are bad news to someone like me but they may actually have big audiences. Things like 'hope' and 'change' conjure up images of Church preaching all over Black America - so guys like Wright are probably pretty common place. Obama learned how to approach and appeal to these groups.

Being a new junior senator in a way is good - minimize short term memory baggage. and he managed not to make any decisions (because his goal is the Presidency).

McCain on the other hand is clearly more qualified and a hero and has given his life to service to America. But I don't think he is necessarily a good political strategist. I don't think he (and his team) were able to clearly counteract Obama's schemes - which is something that needed to happen.

McCain's choice of Palin was not good politically because McCain is old and there is a real chance that Palin might replace him quickly (so from a political point of view this was bad). To McCain (and to me) Palin was good because she is clearly a doer and would be very active in all aspects of the administration.

The current economic crisis doesn't help either.

-----

From a foreign affairs point of view, I think that Obama will have to stay the course (on Iraq and Afstan). On Iran, I am worried though. I think that he will have to keep at least one of his promises but will have little room because of the economy.

It's hard to say what will happen but I don't think Americans will give Obama many second chances.

Obama and The Democrats have the White House.
The Democrats increased control of the Senate.
The Democrats increased control of the House.
The Democrats owned the popular vote and the electoral college.

Americans have spoken.

Live with it, people.

(Don't worry - you've still got Brad Wall and Minority Steve...so don't feel too down. We've only got the leader of the free world.)

Cheers!

sarge is off his meds again, making less sense than usual.

Stand by for another few weeks of O mania by the press until they have run out of superlative adjectives and magazine covers. It will then be quiet for a while while Barry reads "Presidency For Dummies" and realizes the US of A isn't an automatic but a stick shift with manual choke and a finicky carb.

21st of January should prove interesting.

For john McCain, this was his last hurrah but governor Palin's future might prove more productive. We haven't seen the last of her.

But then again, that's just my opinion.

What sore losers! No congratulations for Obama?

You're right - I forgot about all the contrats to President Bush on the lefty blogs in 2004.

However I do congratulate Mr Obama for a convincing win. I hope for all our sakes he governs as a moderate (like Clinton did) and wish him the best in his new job. No Obama Derangement Syndrome for me.

Ok I'll bite Muffin Man and give congratulations to Obama and his party. It seems they have won handily. I'll also wish our southern neighbors.....good luck. I truely hope he turns out far better than I think he will.
Aside from what I think this will do to our economy, my biggest fear is his personal saftey.

If I were sitting in a cave halfway around the globe with a sole pupose in life of destroying the "western democracies". I know precisley where my crosshairs would rest today.

I hope the Secret Service etc. are up to the task.

America just reached the midpoint of "Atlas Shrugged"...It's going to be all down hill from now on...The Empire is way past it's rise...

When a Roosevelt or a Reagan was needed more than ever, they gave themselves a JFK narcissist in a Carter tophat.
At least Canada was in good financial shape when it gave itself trudeau.

Keep your powder dry, and let the "shrugging" begin.

Who's "we" have you got worms?

And by the way who the hell are you anyway? Another anonymous troll, coming out of the woodwork with nothing to say but kindergarten blaa blaas in a place your not liked or even considered......Unless of course you gain a little attention by jumping on one of the other bloggers. ……..Nice!

Knight 99, your 11:25 pm post is brilliant, and seems to have struck a nerve.

Thanks.
