This is the guy from Merril Lynch who sent the TSX into a tailspin of 800 points today after gaining 500 yesterday by changing Potash Corps rating to under perform, which is basically sell.

"Don Carson joined Merrill Lynch in February 2002 as Senior U.S. Chemicals Analyst.Previously, Mr. Carson was the lead chemicals analyst at JP Morgan for 10 years and, prior to that, a member of their chemicals M&A team.

Mr. Carson has ranked second in Institutional Investor's All-Star Analyst survey for the past two years in commodity chemicals, a combination of the former major and agricultural chemicals categories.Prior to the category change, he ranked first in agricultural chemicals and as a runner-up in major chemicals.

A native of Canada, Mr. Carson earned a bachelor of commerce degree in finance from the University of Manitoba and holds an MBA from the University of Western Ontario."

Posted by: ron in kelowna at October 2, 2008 11:54 PM

I recall a few months ago saying on some topic here at SDA that I was selling out of my TSX index fund as it was reaching new heights. I sold the at about TSX=14900. +/-

I'm back in as of today, and plan more with every dip. While things can get worse, they can't get MUCH worse.

The same people who were saying that we were at peak oil, and that commodities would go up forever, and that we should buy more resource stock a few months ago are now saying that the world is ending and that the market will crash forver.

Meh. The world never ends. It cycles. When you're down nearly 30% from a market peak, it's time to buy, and keep buying all way way down to 50% if necessary.

And while you're at it, take a moment to vote in the G&M poll.

Right now 42% for Dion, 34% for Harper. That's just not right.

From the CBC of all places;

The fertilizer stocks took their lumps after Don Carson, Merrill's chemicals and commodities analyst, sent a note to clients Thursday morning.

He said fertilizer prices are no longer going through the roof, partly because farmers are getting lower prices for corn crops they grow with it. This is unsettling news for the industry, he said.

"With phosphate prices falling, nitrogen prices peaking and potash prices rising less than expected, there is considerable uncertainty surrounding the near-term earnings outlook," he said.

'I mean, a Merrill downgrade from a "buy" to a "sell" is pretty dramatic. I've actually never seen them jump two levels on really very little news.'— Richard Downey, senior director of investor relations, Agrium

Richard Downey, Agrium's senior director of investor relations, said corn prices are down from a spring peak of $8 US a bushel but still more than double the average of the past five year, and fertilizer prices remain far higher than a year ago.

"Our business fundamentals are pretty much as strong as they've ever been," he told CBC News, "and there is overreaction going on for the whole fertilizer space"

He expressed shock at the rating cut.

I had gone to the Ottawa Citizen site to check out an article referred to in another SDA story. At the top is a big banner advert for a website called BushHarper.com and of course I couldn't resist seeing the linkage.

I was curious as to who the moonbattered person is who is still trying to tie them together. In vewwwy small print at the bottom it says: "Authorized by the Federal Liberal Agency of Canada - Registered Agent for the Liberal Party of Canada."

Needless to say, it's completely in character, because like the Libeal Party itself, none of it's links work!

I watched the debate. I think Harper won by a mile. After the debate--I went on CBC.CA and left at least two comments supporting Harper. They never showed up. I switched over to CTV.Ca hoping to give Harper praise for his efforts. The CTV had already closed the comments for the night. Last week Lee Richardson, conservative for Calgary Center, was vilified for comments that he made about immigrants and crime. This week,Monday,Calgary police arrested 34 people for various crimes including at least 3 shootings in the Beltline area of Calgary. Beltline is in Lee's riding. I live there. Perusing the newspapers and the calgary police 'citybeat' website,I have found the names of 16 of the 34.I pride myself on my spelling,I do not use spell check(I can't even make paragraphs) and can spell 'silhouette, chrysanthemum, and even scumbags',yet I would be guessing at the spelling of 15 of the 16 names. There was a lot of mohammeds, mustafas, and ahmeds sprinkled through the list. The one name that I could spell must have belonged to their interpreter....Mr. Richardson was right. Also,by Wednesday morning 31 of the 34 were out and back earning money to pay their lawyers. This country needs a conservative majority, badly.

I have been tracking the G&M's poll on the debate since 10 p.m. tonight. At that time Dion was ahead 29%to Harper 33%,Layton was way down there in Lizzie May territory. At 10:09,Harper was at 34%,Dion at 28%,and Layton made a dramatic jump to 29%.Someone else caught this,I think it was liz j .I have been watching it every few minutes since then. There have been small fluctuations over the hours,BUT in the past hour Dion is steadily gaining. Harper was at a peak of 42% at 10:34,Dion had 23%,Layton 27%.Since that time Dion has been increasing his percentage while both Harper and Dion have been going south.Something is amiss. Common sense would say that the later it gets and more people are retiring for the evening the poll should recieve less votes and the percentages will remain about the same. But no,not for the Liberals. They are recieving a steadly influx of votes. I will go out on a limb here and predict that the G&M will declare Dion the victor and have the on-line numbers to back it up in about 3 hours.Tomorrows media spin will have more effect on the election than the actual debate...Nothing to see here folks, move along and don't ask any questions.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 3:22 AM

Sorry, first line should have been Dion at 39%.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 3:25 AM

Yup,In the last hour,5 and a half hours after the debate ended,in the wee hours of the morning,Harper has recieved 100 votes,Dion 373 votes. Dion will be declared champ tomorrow morning, and they will have the numbers to prove it.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 3:33 AM

Fascinating!! Dion is now within one point of Harper. By the time I post this and check the poll again,Dion will be leading and the media will have crowned the sissy. Unbelievable.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 3:43 AM

1:44 a.m. They are now tied.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 3:50 AM

1:47 a.m,all is lost,Dion is the winner! Now I know on-line polls can be manipulated, but that usually results in a big surge from an appeal on a popular blog, for tonight's globe poll to happen,it has to be a little more devious. These numbers are being manipulated. If the g&m use them to promote Dion as the winner ,this points to a complete breakdown of democracy in Canada.Imagine a country where the leading national newspaper uses bogus facts to put their friends in power, couldn't happen in Canada ,could it?

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 4:00 AM

I do hope that someone else is out there following this and if push comes to shove can back my numbers up.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 4:10 AM

If anyone is following this,go to the g&m website and see if they sre locking out people who vote liberal.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 4:33 AM

Let me clarify. Go to G&M and vote liberal and then go back and see if you can vote again.

Posted by: wallyj at October 3, 2008 4:35 AM

My final count at 2:54 a.m,Dion 2417 35%,Harper 2260 33%. How about that? A liberal surge 3 hours after the debate was over will allow the Globe to declare Dion the winner. Nothing to see here folks. Time to sleep, because unlike the starving artists ,my boss expects me to work.

In our city an elderly couple had their home trashed and vandalised in the 'hood they had lived in for 40 years.Kids who were caught by neighbours taunted the cops with the usual "You can't touch us...we have rights"
Old couple had to move out, insurance paid for the repairs,(not mommy and daddy) and the wee l'il darlins had their knuckles barely rapped.

Of course it wasn't in the news.

The fine tuning appears to be bribery to specific parts of industry (farmers, and truckers).

Why? they create GHG like everyone else. I thought this was a Green Shift, not just a redistribution of tax?

Ask yourself the motives behind the Green Shift. Is it about the environment? or is it about wealth redistribution specifically to attract Ontario voters back to the Liberal party?

I remember when the liberals would talk about being the "only national party". Clearly, however, they forgot that national means they should be trying to consider all the regions different concerns.

Be careful when you're being bribed with your own money. That's all I can say.

2 10 2008

Most of the country suffered the coldest September in 14 years, forecasters revealed.

In its monthly summary Met Eireann said the temperature never rose above 20 Celsius anywhere - the first such occurrence in more than 30 years.

Average monthly air temperatures were around half a degree below normal at some southern weather stations and it was the coolest September since 1994 almost everywhere. Forecasters said they were unable to predict the weather over the winter months but the Met Office in Britain claimed temperatures are likely to be above normal over much of Europe, although not as mild as last year. The summer washout seeped into the first half of September, with Dublin stations recording their usual monthly level of rainfall within the first six days."

Already sent my letter to the Star about the picture.
Looking past the obvious intentional placement of the picture of Harper's back( cuz we know in this day of rapid digital photography how difficult it must be for Star staff to get a decent picture of the whole group...)

Let's have fun with it:

Prime Minister Harper going against the flow, stands out in the crowd, shows his backbone.

While Steven Harper turns to the photographer, the other members of the group turn to face May's auntie getting a picture.

The crowd working behind Harper's back feel safety in numbers. They know that alone they are uselss.

Any more?

Just checked G&M site. Harper is clear winner at 40%, with Dion and Layton trailing badly. The rest don't matter.

Layton is a twit. Once again, he failed miserably to present himself as potential leader of the opposition. He was simply nasty, and personally attacked PM, and except for brief exchange with Dion (who nearly lost it there), he has given left leaning Lib voters no reason to change.

Layton is also vulnerable to Grit counterattack. He has been advised by many that his PM only attack strategy was terrible error.

If Grits had better leader, NDP would be getting creamed. Layton seems unwilling to accept that if he goes after Dion, while risking Harper majority, he can supplant Liberals as opposition.

And BTW, he can dish it out but he can't take it. He makes non factual comments (you don't care or you're incompetent; where's your platform, under your sweater), but when Harper comments, factually, that Layton used private clinic, he complains about cheap shot. He and May actually hate Harper and it showed; this does not impress people who are deciding on the credentials of leadership.

In short, Layton does not get it.

This moron came third to Dion in debate. My question is when will the Layton Dipper Ditch happen? My prediction, soon after 14 Oct.

The FBI conducted a raid on the offices of Larry Walsh, Will County executive and former Illinois state senator, as part of a probe into corruption tied to earmarks and lobbyists. St. John's: The Telegram gets into the ABC sweepstakes and has a despicable front page article, which fails miserably and is so obvious even voters in his district are backing him up, trying to draw suspicion to CPC candidate Fabian Manning"s travel expenses when he was a provincial member in 2003. This on the cusp of advance polls opening tomorrow nation wide.

http://tinyurl.com/4m3oqa

"When all the investigations were ongoing with the constituency allowance claims, I, like many former MHAs or present MHAs, were wondering is there something in your claim that the auditor general may question or would have a concern about, or whatever the case may be," Manning said. "I never had a call from the auditor general, OK? So I initiated my own call to him ... His answer to me was 'Fabian, if everybody had a set of books like you had, I wouldn't have a job.' So that gave me a level of comfort in my work over the 11 years (as MHA)."

Manning said he was allowed to spend his entire allowance in six months - "spend it all in eight months, spend it all in 10 months, spend it all in 12 months - that was your choice."

Once the cash ran out, that was it.

"Basically, you just take it on the shoulder yourself and just take it and do what you have to do, get around the riding, get around the district," Manning noted.

Result: Mannning at weeks beginning had 25%, the LPC candidate 21%. A full 40% of voters polled said they were undecided and 51% of those polled said they were satisfied with Manning's performance as an MP. The whole ABC campaign is focused on this one district, Avalon South, since the other districts that were CPC held will be spilt between the LPC and NDP or the NDP will win both. The CPC candiates in those ridings are polling less than 10%. Those 40% undecideds will be more inclined to vote for Manning now that the pile on has begun. He is well liked in his district and was kicked out of Danny's caucus for disagreeing with the 'one'.If you dislike Danny "whine" Williams, than Manning is one CPC'er you should be rooting for even more so.

"Extreme Pro-Abortion Feminist Heather Mallick Scheduled to Speak at Catholic St. Mary's University

St. Mary's University College in Calgary, a Catholic institution, has invited Heather Mallick, a virulently pro-abortion and anti-Catholic author and columnist to address students as part of their 2008-09 speaker series.

Ms. Mallick is scheduled to deliver her talk, "A Liberal Arts Education: Worth Its Weight in Gold" to St. Mary's students on January 22, 2009.

Mallick, a well-established feminist column writer, has an undisguised antipathy toward Catholic teaching and morals, particularly concerning abortion and sexuality.

"In an article published last year on CBC News, Mallick railed against the Vatican's refusal to support abortion for African women, saying the Church has "no pity" for African women whom the Church thinks "don't matter as much as a clump of cells." Therefore, Mallick says, Catholics choosing to disobey the Church are "inevitable" and more rational than Church officials, whom she called "folks who don't get out much."

Mallick advocates an extremely liberal approach to sexuality. In another CBC column she celebrated abortion as the "Get out of Jail Free card" that allows men and women to engage in uninhibited sex:

"Birth control and abortion rights have been a sexual volcano for men, one of those volcanoes that never stops erupting. So much more, and better, sex has been had. Men have been having a giant fling for decades, and women, able to relax about the terror of an unwanted pregnancy, have had more and better sex too."
