I like that the headlines are calling today’s crash the “worst ever.”
In terms of absolute points, sure. In terms of percentages in a single day of trading, 1987’s stock market crash was far worse, and the NASDAQ slide of 2000-2002 was massively worse.
I think news media just can’t resist panic mongering. I imagine them all in the washroom of their office when the soap pump runs out of soap and they all stand around for 10 minutes going, “DOOOOOOOOOM! DOOOOOOOOOOOM!!” until the janitor shows up and puts in more soap.

After a long puff piece a while back about Justin Trudeau and his jogging, now the Globe and Mail has a long slobbering piece about his wife Sophie Gregoire. I have seldom read such a glowing account by a journalist (I do remember some similar sugary stories about Belinda Stronach).
Interesting subtext that the two Trudeau boys seem to be competitive. Anyway Mme Gregoire looks like a real ambitious lady. Latest polls seem to say Trudeau may get in, so stay tuned for the rest of the story...

If they had any decency or pride they'd stop the denial and admit their sad state, the smart ones already have, they're nowhere to be seen.

"Out of hiding, Kosovars embrace Christianity"
By Fatos Bytyci
KLINA, Kosovo (Reuters) - Hundreds of Kosovar Albanians gather on Sundays to attend religious services in a still unfinished red-brick church in the Kosovo town of Klina.
Turning away from the majority Muslim faith imposed by the Ottoman Turks centuries ago, these worshippers are part of a revival of Catholicism in the newly independent Balkan state.
"We have been living a dual life. In our homes we were Catholics but in public we were good Muslims," said Ismet Sopi. "We don't call this converting. It is the continuity of the family's belief."
Sopi has commuted 40 km (25 miles) every Sunday from central Kosovo to Klina to attend a morning mass since he formally became a Roman Catholic five months ago. This September was the first holy month of Ramadan during which no one in his 32-member family fasted.
The majority of ethnic Albanians were forcibly converted to Islam, mostly through the imposition of high taxes on Catholics, when the Ottoman Empire ruled the Balkans.
For centuries, many remembered their Christian roots and lived as what they call "Catholics in hiding". Some, nearly a century after the Ottomans left the Balkans, now see the chance to reveal their true beliefs.
The Liberal Party of Canada and Canada's Media deserve each other.
I can't think of two other such entities that are so dishonest, incompetent, and arrogant.
Their cynical view of the Canadian electorate is instructive. And abhorrent. And I hope terribly wrong.
Their self-centered agenda trumps all. No blow is too low.
The next two weeks should be a hoot. The Liberal colossus, wallowing about in inanities, incompetence and untruths; accompanied by our untrustworthy media, will stop at nothing.
Posted by: bud at September 30, 2008 11:18 AMThe so-called 'holy' month of Ramadan and the creation of Pakistan:
It was in Ramadan that the Muslims of the subcontinent inaugurated the violent Jihadi quest for dividing India to create Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the Muslim League Party, washing his hands off any negotiation for keeping India united, reached a resolution in the Muslim League meeting in Bombay on 29 July 1946 that,
"It has become abundantly clear that the Muslims of India would not rest with anything less than the immediate establishment of an independent and full sovereign State of Pakistan… the Council of the All-India Muslim League is convinced that now the time has come for Muslim nation to resort to Direct Action to achieve Pakistan and get rid of the present slavery under the British and contemplated future caste Hindu domination." [Khosla, Stern Reckoning, p38]
Calcutta, where Muslims constituted one-third of the population (similar proportion at Badr), was chosen as the venue for unleashing the Direct Action. The date chosen was the 18th day of Ramadan (16 August 1946), coinciding with the day of Badr. Secret pamphlets, circulated amongst Muslims by the Muslim League (also read out in mosque sermons), read:
"Muslims must remember that it was in Ramzam that the Quran was revealed. It was in Ramzan that the permission for Jehad was granted. It was in Ramzam that the battle of Badr, the first open conflict between Islam and Heathenism [i.e., idolatry, which equates Hinduism] was fought and won by 313 Muslims; and again it was in Ramzan that 10,000 under the Holy Prophet conquered Mecca and established the kingdom of Heaven and the commonwealth of Islam in Arabia. Muslim League is fortunate that it is starting its action in this holy month.
By the grace of God, we are ten cores [100 millions] in India but through our bad luck we have become slaves of the Hindus and the British. We are starting a Jehad in Your Name in this very month of Ramzan. Pray make us strong in body and mind—give Your helping hand in all out actions—make us victorious over the Kafers [enemy of Allah aka Hindus]—enable us to establish the Kingdom of Islam in India and make proper sacrifices for this Jehad—by the grace of God may we build up in India the greatest Islamic kingdom in the world." [Khosla, p51-52; Khan, The Great Partition, p63-64]
In the Direct Action Jihad at Calcutta, Muslim unleashed—with the connivance of the police under the direction of the Muslim League government in power—brutal massacre, pillage, plunder, rape and arson of the Hindus and Sikhs. After suffering one-and-a-half days of brutal savagery, the Hindus and Sikhs recovered from the shock and plucking courage, hit back, outnumbering the Muslims and paying back in like manners. Five days of continued violence racked up some 5,000 dead-bodies with 43% Muslim casualties. The whole outcome of this Jihad for creating Pakistan, inaugurated in the holy month of Ramadan, was up to two million deaths (roughly equal on both sides), a few million Hindus and Sikhs converted to Islam at the pain of death, and tens of thousand of predominantly Hindu and Sikh women were raped or abducted and married off to Muslims. Some twenty million people were to cross borders leaving every thing behind.
Creation of Pakistan, a pure land for the Muslims, was probably the greatest 20th-century achievement for the Muslim ummah. Jihad did not go in vein.

Tories opened patronage doors before election: OTTAWA — The Harper government approved 148 appointments to federal boards and agencies, long used as rewards for supporters of the party in power, as the election neared, The Canadian Press has learned..... Mr. Harper, who railed against Liberal patronage in the 2006 election, later failed to deliver on a campaign pledge to put an independent commission in charge of vetting cabinet appointments.
Well, guess you can't fault a guy for paying back the faithful for all that ass-licking and donations. Hipocrisy among the Cons appears to be like mob on a Liberal.

"...Two weeks ago, Harper was cruising to a major breakthrough in Quebec on the two-track message that he was delivering the goods for the province, while the Bloc had outlived its usefulness. But then the Conservative war room overplayed their hand by rolling out a mobile billboard in front of Bloc headquarters in Duceppe's own riding, asserting that Quebecers had wasted hundreds of millions of dollars in electing MPs since 1993. The messenger for this missive in democracy was the unelected Michael Fortier from the Senate.
But much more to the point, the Bloc has successfully linked cultural funding cuts and a juvenile crime crackdown, which play well in the rest of Canada, under a powerful theme that the right-wing Conservatives don't share Quebec values. Harper didn't help his own cause when he blew off the arts crowd as people attending "rich galas." This has jump-started a Bloc campaign that had been floundering, enhancing its residual strength as a defender of Quebec interests, and even more powerfully, of Quebec values. Instead of it being about them, they've made it about Harper..."

Social engineers are bad bankers
IN 1772, the collapse of the Ayr Bank led to the Edinburgh banking crisis of that year. Only three of Edinburgh's 30 private banks survived. Adam Smith commented that "the operations of this bank seem to have produced effects quite opposite from what was intended". The Ayr Bank had been established in 1770 to provide long-term loans and provide credit to people who otherwise found it difficult to borrow, financing a speculative boom in housing, turnpikes and canals, the transport infrastructure of the time.
It borrowed from other banks in London and Edinburgh and, as borrowers began to default, it had to pay off its debts by securing greater loans. Smith's final verdict on its collapse was that it only enabled borrowers "to get much deeper into debt, so that when ruin came, it fell so much the heavier". The British economy struggled to recover until the 1780s.
The collapse of the Ayr Bank tells us much about the present crisis.
In 1999, then president Bill Clinton instructed the Fannie Mae Corporation to ease credit requirements on loans to ethnic minorities and low-income earners. In this nationwide scheme, the pilot program alone involved 24 banks. This was to include what became known as the sub-prime sector. Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive in 1999 said that in addition to "reducing down payment requirements" the corporation would underwrite loans in the sub-prime market. Fannie Mae's board is largely made up of prominent Democrats.

I like Andrew Coyne, as any naturally conservatively inclined person would, and he cuts through the bull so well....
"...Here’s Stephen Harper, campaigning in Ajax, Ontario yesterday:
Friends, the GTA doesn’t need higher taxes. The GTA doesn’t need a carbon tax. And the GTA doesn’t want this country to go back to deficits. Instead, it needs the kind of prudent investments our government is making to help the economy grow. Investments like the bridge on Sandy Beach Road south of Parkham Crescent in Pickering. Investments like a new passport office here in Ajax. Investments like the federal Gas Tax Fund, that by 2010 will have invested over 800 million dollars in the GTA...."
And then, in case anyone didn’t get the hint,
Friends, our government is delivering for the GTA. But there’s more to be done. And we need a strong team of Conservative MPs from the GTA in Ottawa to make it happen."
You need Conservative MPs to make what happen? To ensure that “more” is done in the way of “delivering” for the GTA. Want more passport offices and bridges? Vote Conservative.
This is the Prime Minister of Canada talking, you understand. The candidates for President of the United States debate the shape of the financial system and whether it is strategically wiser to focus on Iraq or Afghanistan. The Prime Minister of Canada — a Conservative Prime Minister — devotes himself to delivering passport offices to Ajax.
This is what is left of conservatism in Canada. This is what our politics have become, or reverted to — trawling for votes with hooks baited with other people’s money, like any 1940s ward-heeler. It’s the same old game, telling voters in every riding that they can make off at the expense of all the others, that the LIberals played for years. Only I remember a time when there was a party, and a leader, that said they’d put a stop to it."
Sigh. Once upon a time, there was a person who said they were conservative. Then they started doling out patronage gigs, appointed bagmen to cabinet, and ramped up spending faster than any government in history in their first 2 years.
Then they became what they said they hated.
The End.
