Posted by Vitruvius at September 29, 2008 12:01 AMOld news in some ways, but some middle east oil exporters are looking at importing coal so they can export more oil and gas.
We buy oil from there, why don't we just burn the coal ourselves?
How will Dion's carbon tax address this?

Posted by: Stan at September 28, 2008 11:07 PMDoesn't your latest Ve number indicate a tossup between a Conservative minority and a Liberal minority? How does that square with what's happening in the real world?
How do you figure it's being thrown out? (Do you figure it's being thrown out?)
Is it just not capable of handling such a Liberal collapse (dorky Lib leader) and surging NDP?
Enquiring but not statistically trained minds want to know.
Posted by: Christoph at September 28, 2008 11:18 PMOh here's a good reader tip. And here's another.
Posted by: Christoph at September 28, 2008 11:24 PMChristoph ~ Σ ΔVe/n indicates the average change in Ve in the columns shown to the right in the table row in which it appears. The actual values of Ve for each pollster for each day are the rightmost numbers in each cell in the table rows. As it stands, Sunday's results make a Conservative majority slightly less likely; at a minimum they are still in strong minority territory. Keep in mind that the daily tracking polls, as seen in yesterday's Ve Update graph, tend to bounce around quite a bit, especially Nanos. Everything will depend, obviously, on what happens between now and the election; just remember that trends happen over time. Tomorrow is another day.

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Hurricane-force winds ripped branches off trees in Nova Scotia Sunday night and torrential rains caused localized flooding as a vicious weather system hit the Maritimes.
SDA plagiarized in the comments:
J M from Calgaristan, Canada writes: Every time you drive your SUV, a Nova Scotian drowns. We are reaping what we have sown. It is really too bad that Alberta doesn't have these man made disasters to contend with as they might start to think about it. Just more proof that they don't care about the rest of Canada one iota.

Mysterious Deadly Cargo Killing Hijackers Of Iranian Ship
http://thecanadiansentinel.blogspot.com/2008/09/mysterious-deadly-cargo-killing.html
The pirates who hijacked the Iranian military cargo ship, which had last docked in China and was en-route to Rotterdam to deliver "industrial products" to a "German client", are dying, one by one.Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at September 29, 2008 5:35 AMTo me, the symptoms reported being suffered by the pirates make me deduct that the cargo is radioactive. EXTREMELY radioactive. As if it were nuclear-weapons-grade material.
Britsh Conservatives Will Ban Sharia Law If Elected
Yes, in case you hadn't heard, thanks to the silent MSM, there IS Sharia Law in Britain. And the Sharia courts are already going outside their narrow Labour-legislated mandate, obviously intending to go as far as they please.
http://thecanadiansentinel.blogspot.com/2008/09/britsh-conservatives-will-ban-sharia.html
Excerpts from source:
A TOUGH package is being drawn up by David Cameron to tackle Islamic extremism. One of the key proposals is to ban sharia law courts from operating in this country.Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at September 29, 2008 5:43 AM(...)
Outlining the Tories’ wider plans for tackling Islamic extremism, she added: “We will be tough. We will be really tough on the men of violence and those who lead them to violence. That’s the real gap between us and the Government at the moment.”
She said the party would abandon the “blind alley of multiculturalism, which has deliberately gone down the road of separation for its own sake. We want unity and opportunity, despite difference, through integration.”
"Mysterious Deadly Cargo Killing Hijackers Of Iranian Ship"
I think I saw that movie. Seriously, if there was any chance of nuclear material aboard I'm sure the Americans would have known or have done a fly-by for a scan. If the radiation is enough to cause illness then it can be detected. I'm almost certain the Navy Seals have plans that involve hijacking a hijacked ship.

LAYTON ALERT!
http://www.nationalpost.com/todays_paper/story.html?id=846352&p=2
“What is most worrying is that [Layton's] intellectual incoherence does not appear to be just political theatre.”
After having admitted that Jack Layton is a “buffoon,” John Ivison in the National Post this morning goes on to catalogue the reasons why a vote for Jack Layton is a vote for an incoherent—and dangerous—platform.
Jack demonizes the corporate sector and seems to think, contra received international economist wisdom, that raising corporate taxes, while heaping financial benefits upon “working families,” is the way for Canada to go. Within a few years, Canada would become the North American Zimbabwe.
Ivison concludes: “But Jack clearly knows jack about competitiveness and, given he's now too popular to ignore, it means he's no longer harmless. Canadians should take note.”
Meanwhile here in Quebec Jean Charest is obviously moving toward calling an election this fall (groan!).
French networks (not to mention the CBC) continue to slant their newcasts so that the Conservatives are said to be Bush-loving, women-hating, arts cutting philistines (sigh)who want 14-year-olds to be raped (sigh).
The Michel Rivard of Beau Dommage YouTube video about a French supplicant for a song festival before a unilingual Conservative Ottawa board continues to make the rounds, even though it is racist and inaccurate (since when are any of these committees totally English staffed or at the minimum without simultaneous tranlsation).
Duceppe continues to propose raiding the coffers of Hydro Quebec to cut dependence on oil (read Alberta)by subsidizing households to switch to electricity, when taxpayers would be much better off having Hydro sell the electricity to Ontario or the States and returning most of the profits to the government (the price of electricity is quite low here for political reasons and fosters waste of electricity).
batb,
How dare John Ivison criticize Jack! Doesn't Ivison realize that if elected, Jack! will end poverty (and usher in world peace) within 12 years?

Spengler, US wealth in shrink mode
Leverage is the secret of American wealth. The average American family in 2004 had a net worth of US$448,000 on an income of $43,000, according to the Federal Reserve's survey of consumer wealth. Wealth equaled 10.4 years worth of income. In 1989, the Fed survey shows, it was only 7.3 years of income, and just 3.8 years worth in 1962. Measured in years, why should the ratio of Americans' net worth amount to annual income have tripled between the administrations of John F Kennedy and George W Bush?
Here's a must read and post for all today from the Globe & Mail: "Global economic crisis no time to bring in minority government" by Gwyn Morgan.
Posted by: Liz J at September 29, 2008 10:21 AMFor anyone who wishes to go back in recent memory to the HRC fiasco this is a must red from today's Toronto Sun, a Column/Comment by Salim Mansur:" NDP opportunism betrays Canada".

HARARE, Zimbabwe Tens of thousands of Zimbabweans lined up at banks Monday, desperate to take out their money after the government raised the limit on daily withdrawals.
New rules went into affect Monday allowing withdrawals of up to 20,000 Zimbabwe dollars (US$35; euro25). The old 1,000 Zimbabwean-dollar limit was barely enough to buy a newspaper.
The limit and the fact that Zimbabwe has the highest inflation rate in the world - officially at 11 million percent, unofficially much higher - has meant long lines at banks most days."

Senator Barack Obama said something at the presidential debate last week that almost perfectly encapsulates the difference between his foreign policy and his opponent’s: “Secretary of Defense Robert Gates himself acknowledges the war on terrorism started in Afghanistan and it needs to end there.” I don’t know if Obama paraphrased Gates correctly, but if so, they’re both wrong.
If Afghanistan were miraculously transformed into the Switzerland of Central Asia, every last one of the Middle East’s rogues gallery of terrorist groups would still exist. The ideology that spawned them would endure. Their grievances, such as they are, would not be salved. The political culture that produced them, and continues to produce more just like them, would hardly be scathed. Al Qaedism is the most radical wing of an extreme movement which was born in the Middle East and exists now in many parts of the world. Afghanistan is not the root or the source...
(PDF warning) Toshi Yoshihara and James R. Holmes, China’s New Undersea Nuclear Deterrent: Strategy, Doctrine, and Capabilities
Over the past few years, Western strategic thinkers have debated what China’s emerging force of fleet ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) portends for Beijing’s overall nuclear strategy. One influential school of thought assumes that the rudimentary landbased missile force that has served Beijing’s needs in the past will continue to do so. Others dispute this static model... They predict that China will soon put to sea an SSBN fleet more symmetrical with the U.S. Navy in terms of both quality and quantity. Moreover, it will abandon its traditional stance of “minimum deterrence,” assuming a more assertive nuclear posture better described as “limited deterrence.”
We take issue with both of these projections of Chinese nuclear strategy, doctrine, and undersea capabilities...

Al Qaeda isn't the root, or source either. The Sunnah, complete with Mohammad's supremacist and criminal political ideology are the root and source.

On the November 27, 2006 edition of Today, as noted here, Matt Lauer portentously declared:
After careful consideration, NBC News has decided the change in terminology is warranted and what is going on in Iraq can now be characterized as civil war.
On that evening's Countdown, Keith Olbermann chimed in, suggesting that NBC's pronouncement was comparable to Walter Cronkite's 1968 declaration that the Vietnam War was lost.
Although NBC, without fanfare, stopped using the "civil war" term sometime beginning in September, 2007, it has never--despite the success of the surge and the marked decrease in sectarian violence--declared the civil war over. Could today be the day? NBC's parent company, General Electric, has signed a deal with Iraq worth billions of dollars to it and Siemens for the provision of electric generation equipment.
So, what is it? Is GE venturing into a civil-war zone, or has the time, finally, come for NBC to admit the civil war is over?"
