Posted by Vitruvius at September 27, 2008 12:01 AMI just finished watching the 1st U.S. presidential debate. Actual debate, mostly about foreign policy, important things. Gawd,I wish our 'leaders' would focus on real issues, rather than whom Julie may have blown. Harper is head and shoulders above his opponents, more like the American candidates, which is anethema(sp?) to the rest... I know that 'truthers' are firmly behind Obama,do they realize that he thinks they are fools also?
Posted by: wallyj at September 26, 2008 11:09 PMWatched the entire debate. MSM saying Obama won. I watched the damn thing and think McCain did far better than Obama. Is that preaching to the converted or did I miss something?

Nice, geometric mean of 7.66, arithmetic mean of 7.79. That's close, but not enough for your historical findings.
Speaking of which, can you add a column to your table for one of the means?
I have to say that Thaddeus McCotter R Michigan hits it right on the head:

"Ottawa appeals court ruling on Gomery findings"
OTTAWA–The federal government is appealing a court ruling that overturned Justice John Gomery's findings against Jean Chrétien and cleared the former Liberal prime minister of blame in the sponsorship scandal.
In papers filed Friday – signed by deputy minister John Sims, the top-ranking bureaucrat in the Justice Department – government lawyers argue that the Federal Court trial division was wrong to conclude in June that Gomery was biased against Chrétien and his former chief of staff Jean Pelletier."

Sorry for the length, but I'd like to share this email I got with all:
A lady Canadian libertarian wrote numerous letters to the government, complaining about the treatment of a captive insurgents (terrorists) being held in Afghanistan National Correctional System facilities. She received back the following reply:
National Defence Headquarters MGen George R. Pearkes Bldg, 15 NT
101 Colonel By Drive Ottawa, ON K1A 0K2 Canada
Dear Concerned Citizen,
Thank you for your recent letter expressing your profound concern of treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists captured by Canadian Forces who were subsequently transferred to the Afghanistan Government and are currently being held by Afghan officials in Afghanistan National Correctional System facilities.
Our administration takes these matters seriously and your opinions were heard loud and clear here in Ottawa. You will be pleased to learn, thanks to the concerns of citizens like yourself; we are creating a new department here at the Department of National Defence, to be called 'Liberals Accept Responsibility for Killers' program, or L.A.R.K. for short. In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to divert one terrorist and place him in your personal care. Your personal detainee has been selected and is scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence in Toronto next Monday. Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of complaint. It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers. We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommend in your letter.
Although Ahmed is a sociopath and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his 'attitudinal problem' will help him overcome these character flaws. Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences. We understand that you plan to offer counselling and home schooling.
Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We advise that you do not ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.
Ahmed will not wish to interact with you or your daughters since he views females as a subhuman form of property. This is a particularly sensitive subject for him and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that he will recommend as more appropriate attire. I'm sure you will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the burka over time. Just remember that it is all part of 'respecting his culture and religious beliefs' as described in your letter.
Thanks again for your concern. We truly appreciate it when folks like you keep us informed of the proper way to do our job and care for our fellow man. You take good care of Ahmed and remember, we'll be watching. Good luck and God bless you.
Cordially, Minister of National Defence

"George Jonas: Forget guns, ban the statues"
"What could have prevented the tragedy? Gun control?
Finland has gun control.
Eighteen-year-old Pekka-Eric Auvinen, who last year killed six fellow students, a headmistress and a school nurse in the Finnish town of Jokela before turning the gun on himself, had to do it with a wimpy .22, a SIG Mosquito, as police wouldn’t let him buy a 9 mm Beretta. They thought Auvinen wasn’t experienced enough. Presumably, after his shooting spree, he would have been.
What about an outright ban on handguns?
Well, that could inconvenience killers. Before breaking the law on homicide, for instance, Saari and Auvinen would have had to break the law on possessing a prohibited weapon. Unlike a bagatelle like murder, that’s serious. Or the unruly boys would have had to go on their rampages with rifles or shotguns. To be legal.
Okay, Saari and Auvinen were mad. How about banning insanity? Not in hindsight, but prospectively.
“Can a person flip,” I asked a forensic psychiatrist, “from one second to the next?”
“For attribution?” he asked.
“Don’t risk your career,” I said, “if the answer is politically incorrect.”
“Just think,” he replied. “How else would a person flip if not from one second to the next? That’s what “flipping” means.”
“You’re talking about a person predisposed to flipping, of course?”
“You know someone who isn’t?” he asked.
Smart aleck. But if not guns, insanity or maybe adolescence, what can we ban?
Well, there’s always America. Yes, the shootings happened in Finland, but we all know violence is due to Hollywood movies, gun-culture, John Wayne, and moose-killer vice-presidential candidates. Look at the crazed Finn: He spoke English on the video, just like Sarah Palin.
It’s a comforting thought — blame America. But what if it’s not accurate? What if senseless slaughter is human rather than American? What if it feeds on the monuments we erect to it?
Kauhajoki’s region of picturesque woods and lakes is no stranger to bloodshed. Rivers of it had spilled in various wars, such as the one between Russia and Sweden about 200 years ago. Back then, the slaughter was instigated by such historic figures as Charles XIII of Sweden or the famous Russian general of Scottish ancestry, Barclay de Tolly. They’re cast in bronze all over Europe.
Did the massacres of the “Finnish War” of 1808 make more sense than the massacre dreamt up by a 22-year-old student chef at a local vocational college this week? Have historic figures not shed blood for reasons of delusion and self-aggrandizement as much as the perpetrators of adolescent school massacres? Does violence that’s senseless when private become more sensible when committed for reasons of state?
We ban weapons -- and erect monuments to people who wield them. Forget guns, I say. Try banning statues."

Did anyone see the question & answers yesterday with Dion at a seniors home. Dion was asked a question in English, only he did not understand the question. So his associate next to him(Gerard kennedy) had to repeat the question he was being asked, Only thing is though he repeated the Question to Dion In French. I remember in the last debates & Stephen Harper had a question in French that he had to ask to be repeated, However the question was repeated to mr harper in french Not english.
Now with no disrespect to Mr Dion, But how will Dion fair in the English debates? Because he will not have anyone next ot him repeating the question in french, I think that this could be the final nail into the coffin for mr dion.

It's sad, too. Stéphane Dion and his team didn't reach out to very many experienced Grits, so many, many folks are watching the carrnage from the sidelines. But I have to say, it's sad to see what we built up get pissed away.] WK

WK will never be colateral damage from the collapse of a politician or political movement. All the "experienced Grits" know what is happening and are distancing themselves while acquiring the meme of plausible deniability. The moment WK bolted was the Cherniak spat over the Green Shift.
I would love to see a cartoon with Dion being pushed off of a decrepit looking luxury ship's deck by WK, Stephen Ledrew, Dalton McGuinty, Rae & Iggy. With a green anchor attached to Dion. Of course added points if Cherniak is shackled to Dion with an "It's about the Shift, stupid" button.

"Dion blames Harper's 'low-blow' tactics for poor Liberal poll numbers
OTTAWA — Liberal Leader Stephane Dion is accusing Prime Minister Stephen Harper of character assassination and says he will use next week's televised debates to show Canadians who he really is and what he stands for.
An increasingly frustrated Dion responded Saturday to new polls that show his party languishing with support levels in the low to mid-20 per cent range and the New Democrats closing in from behind.
"Never has a government spent so much to destroy a person and his policies as Harper has towards me," Dion said during a campaign event in Stoney Creek, Ont., just outside Hamilton.
He said the leaders' debates Wednesday and Thursday will allow him to reach out to voters and illustrate that neither he nor his policies bear any resemblance to the picture painted by Harper and his party's aggressive attack ads.
"I think Canadians are dying to vote Liberal," he said.
"It's for us to tell them we have ... a team, with a leader, with an action plan ...for the challenge of today.""

Vaknin explains: “Narcissistic leaders are nefarious and their effects pernicious. They are subtle, refined, socially-adept, manipulative, possessed of thespian skills, and convincing. Both types [cerebral and somatic] equally lack empathy and are ruthless and relentless or driven.” These were the very traits that distinguished Hitler and Khomeini. Many of these traits can be seen in Obama. As for his ruthlessness, perhaps his support of legislation to let babies die if they survive abortion, gives a glimps into his soul, that he may lacks empathy, does not value life, and if in the position of power can be ruthless. Narcissists need power to show their ruthlessness. Considering the fact that he neglected his own half brother, George Obama, who lives on one dollar per month in Kenya, we can’t vouch for Obama’s empathy or say he is a caring person...
