Its hardly an insult. The cowboy image is filled with risk-taking and, sometimes, wanton recklessness, based on a false sense of untouchability, albeit one sometimes justified by dramatic success.

Very similar to the kind of I-bankers that Captain Capitalism wants to shoot. Pioneers and risk-takers who play by instinct, not rules. When they succeed its dramatic; when they fail, its equally dramatic. At its heart - a disdain for contemporary convention - after all, thats not how it works in the Wild West, or the Banking world, if you will.

Its only an insult when they fail. Intepreting it as an insult is akin to accepting failure.

If you can pull it off it's brilliant, if not you're a goat. No guts no glory.

The I-bankers in Captains piece should be treated like the goats they are...supper.

The term "cowboy" actually did start out as a derogatory term, particularly in Kansas during the 19th century.

Posted by: PhantomObserver at September 21, 2008 9:11 AM

They are so pannicked they are grasping at anything, much like our "tolerant left", you know the Heather Mallicks and Danny williams, the ones who "own" tolerance, as long as they approve and you are not a free thinking person. Take a good look anyone who is still teetering on who to vote for, here or in the US. The left is for failure and destruction of family or anything we can be proud of like cowboys, because the left HAS NO PRIDE!

"Bush McCain era?" When was that? Was Biden drunk when he said it?

So, now the code-word for Republicans is Cowboy,, LOL.

Oh, Ok, well let me see if I can stick the blade in a lil deeper and twist it then, just bought a AK-47 yesterday, still in the box, 1991 model, never been fired, no registration, no paper filing, no waiting period, it's laying on my pool table at this very moment,, 7.62 mm , with a banana clip that holds 2 boxed of shells.

For the first time in my Adult life I may have some admiration for something Made in China.

Everybody should read kinsella blog this morning.

I wonder if he was drinking before he wrote it.

Posted by: leo at September 21, 2008 10:33 AM

Yeah, when did "cowboy" become an insult, as applied to political action in the highest offices?

For that matter, clowns too are a grassroots phenomenon, beloved of children. Heck, they're found at rodeos -- even some cowboys are clowns. Next thing you know, Biden might also be calling for an end to the clown mentality of the past 8 years in the White House. If he does, I hope we as a society will stop to wonder when "clown" became an insult, as applied to governmental actions and policies. That would be every bit as puzzling a question.

Posted by: Figulus Pilosus at September 21, 2008 10:37 AM

Progressives hate cowboys because they are the opposite of metrosexuals. They also know that cowboys are able to identify and call then on their BS ideas.

The left is treatened by anyone with an absolute sense of good and evil. In their relativist ethics there is no discreet line. They feel insecure when thei situational and rationalized ethics are scrutinized against moral icons.

Typical leftist petty sneering...they namecall what they cannot be...they detest what they cannot achieve and they denounce any standard or ideal that rises above the left wing celebration of ethical mediocrity.

Garth has to tuck his pants into his boots given all the shit he wades in. Sadly most of the shit is his.

Hollywood and the left like the Brokeback Mountain type of cowboy.

There's more derogatory use of cowboy from the Euroweenies.

Can't factually tell you why the polite and regimented Euros feel threatened by the independent image, but it seems cowboy and redneck are somewhat interchangable.

Latte-sipping superiority? Well, there are not many urban cowboys, other than the Midnight Cowboy, another one of Hollywood's images of the type of cowboy who's acceptable.

Remember the old west photos of the guys wearing derbies standing next to the chuck wagon or herding cattle? These were mostly American Anglo-Saxon frontiersmen and the ones with the "Cowboy" label at the time. The people who wore the big hats and looked like today's idea of a cowboy were called "Vaqueros" and were of Hispanic/Indian/Mexican extraction.

They had little in common besides bad food and low pay. No doubt folks with a keen grasp of history like BO/JB were intent on slagging the alleged cultural faults brought down to us via the first mentioned group not the latter.

The people who earn the wealth are often sneered at by the Left Latte Crowd. Redneck, Cowboy, and Logger often have a similar connotation out here in the Left Coast.

Posted by: Gunney99 at September 21, 2008 12:09 PM

Try the oil Patch for rednecks and cowboys. If the Patch was run by metro-sexuals from the cities, imagine what our oil & gas industry would be like!

Actually, I couldn't imagine it being run by metro-sexuals. Picture Wk on the "floor" slamming tongs!

Posted by: jt at September 21, 2008 12:27 PM

I have a small collection of lever guns and I like to line dance...what does that make me?
I'd much rather be thought of as a cowboy than an amoral leftist!

I see by your outfit...that you are a cowboy..the stuff heroes are made of Willie Nelson would say...so I asked Willie Nelson if he'd seen Broke Back Mountain...Willie snarled..SHUT YOUR CAKE HOLE OR I'LL BLOW YOU AWAY...

Just what "cowboy mentality" is being refered to here?

Excuse me...it's time to give my men their whiskey and my horses their beer.

Did anyone ask the Bidden's boss, the Great 0, what he thinks of the Bedowins?

I spelled Bedouin incorrectly - shall I report to the nearest HRC tribunal for an inquest?

Tweaks the cowboy in all of us that understands.

I grabbed one of the Winchester 94 30-30 Centennial models, made in 1994. History that spans 114 years now comes to mind when I hold that beautiful piece of steel and walnut. Never was a more functional tool ever invented... :-)

"Cowboy" is an intended insult. I don't know a single cowboy that takes insult from being called a cowboy. I don't like being called a cowboy because I'm not one. I'm a redneck. I like cowboys, as long as we're not exchanging hooks and jabs.

I think the intent of the namecallers is to imply that their intended target is only qualified to do low end labour. Plumbers, garbagemen, janitors, and so on all get the same disrespect. I don't see anyone jumping to defend them.

Besides, cowboys usually punch people who ride them too hard. I guarantee Obama won't insult any cowboys. He's probably seen "Blazing Saddles", and has a whole different slant on the story.

Posted by: dp at September 21, 2008 6:11 PM

I consider the term Cowboy to be honorable. Like Redneck, or: "Albertans are more American than Americans". We are proud to be called such.

Yoop -- Never was a more functional tool ever invented

Are you sure about that? I beg to differ...may I mention one name...Al Gore

Posted by: Orlin at September 21, 2008 8:02 PM

If you want to ride a bull market then best you have a rodeo cowboy bull rider to do that. If you are faced with a bear market then a cowboy with a lariat who could rope and control it is needed. And if it gets badly out of control a cowboy/cowgirl who is handy with a Winchester model 94 30/30 would be needed.

Punch up "My heroes have always been cowboys" on youtube videos and mosey along. One of my childhood heroes had a horse named trigger and a dog named bullet. Was that ever a politically incorrect childhood.

If the eastern bastards are using "cowboy" as an insult, can "farmer" be far behind?

Posted by: Texas Canuck at September 22, 2008 10:56 AM

But of course here in Canada, if the east had the 'cowboy' image, the historical mystique and glamour, it would be a title of the highest honour.

As I like to say when the east tries to call westerners 'cowboys' in the negative sense, Eat Your Eastern Hearts Out.

Posted by: rockyt at September 22, 2008 12:04 PM

As near as I can make out, 'cowboy' officially became an insult in Nov, 2000. It will stop being an insult just as soon as the Dhimmicrats have a Presidential candidate from Texas.
