The recent shameful treatment of Sarah Palin and her family by the American media and by our own CBC's Neil McDonald put on open display a disturbing sense of entitlement on the part of some progressives to use questionable tactics, including that of attacking politicians' family members, without compunction, when the target holds conservative views. It may be the case that the apparent lack of shame in such ongoing, open, unashamed
displays is just the cultural fallout of a received wisdom that holds conservatism as a force for bad in the world and the left a force for good. No matter what the cause, though, something has clearly gone wrong when it gets to the point where the political views of, say, a thoroughly decent, hardworking conservative/right voter who loves his family, gives to charity -- maybe goes to church --and who participates in community events and treats everyone he encounters with respect are presented as clear evidence of a bigoted, warlike, racist and misogynist world view, while the political views of any self-identifying leftist, no matter how ridiculous or unrealistic those views, are always presented as being somehow thoroughly grounded in high-minded ideals like peace, justice and fairness.
The idea that the left is nothing but pure, sweet goodness is increasingly being challenged by the more morally-consistent, clear-headed members of the progressive left, some of whom have found themselves, especially after 9-11, unable to abide by the sort of moral blackout wrought by such unexamined self-righteousness. No group of people is immune to ignorance or inconsistency, but one of the differences between the prog/left and conservatives is that, in the Canadian context, Conservatives who espouse openly racist views simply do not rise within their political parties, nor thrive for long in the official grass roots of their party, unless they cease making such utterances. Unfortunately, this is not so much the case on the left, where relatively hateful and even fascistic views thrive comfortably at the official edges.
Progressive Canadian blogger Terry Glavin is among those who are turning the proverbial klieg lights on the darker forces on the left. He does not oppose anyone's right to express or hold controversial views, but he continues to duly note, with some concern, the ease with which such views may be shrugged off within the progressive political sphere. In this
post he looks at a few Canadian examples, including that of a young New Democrat, later a Liberal, who found a comfortable home in the grass roots of these parties despite his arguably anti-Semitic views.
Glavin doesn't demonize the young man for his views; he simply notes, with concern, the "utter ordinariness" of such views within certain milieus on the left.

WHEN will the CBC be cut off period.
I mean EVERY election they are a one way monologue of leftwing 'shaping' of:
the news, pre-selected leftwing audience members for townhall meetings and focus groups, spun polls and an unending, cacaphonous anti-Conservative misrepresentation, smear, slur and innuendo on EVERY newcast at EVERY hour of the day and night...ALL on the radio and TV airwaves that we the citizens of Canada pay for with our taxes..and lots of us taxpayers are Conservative but the CBC does NOT reflect a fair picture to put it mildly.
EVERY election they do this without absolutely no compunction at all.
SOMEBODY HAS TO PUT AN END TO THIS!
Terry Glavin has done some truly good work. I'm particularly fond of this essay from April 2008:
The Cairo Clique: Anti-Zionism and the Canadian Left
The phenomenon that Dr. Ely Karmon of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism has called "a growing trend of solidarity between leftist, Marxist, anti-globalization and even rightist elements with Islamists" has lately emerged as the dominant trend in "anti-war" activism in Canada...

The progressives seem to have a high school mentality. Not all of course but certainly more than their share. The actions of the progressives and media in regards to Palin confirmed it.
At the beginning, there was the adolescent cliquishness, the rumor mill and the journalistic swarming. Then it was criticisms of the status symbols she was lacking like a Harvard education, urban lifestyle and extensive foreign travel. Finally there was the peer pressure as channeled through the Gibson interview. He appeared to be more interested in showing his groups superiority over Palin, by literally looking down at her, than conducting an objective interview. The one that sticks out most though is the MSM/progressives need for everyone to unquestionably conform to current fashions as defined by them- from hairstyle and clothing to lifestyle and ideas. Unbelievably immature behaviour.
It was revealing though. For all their talk of inclusiveness and diversity, the Progressive/MSM Club is extremely exclusive. The pool of people that they deem competent to seek office seems to grow narrower with every election. Of course this is just a cover for what they really mean. No matter what qualification a conservative has, they are not good enough. OTOH, progressives are elevated as worthy regardless of their lack of accomplishments. Then these same organizations are offended to find out that people see them as elitist snobs and mock them. Perhaps if they let go of this need to define and be part of the "in" crowd they would not have so much trouble connecting with voters and customers.

His piece points out a phenomenon previously identified on this site, namely that most liberal/leftism is a religion. Thus, the attacks are the attacks of believers directed against heretics. Behaviour is not the defining feature of liberalism/socialism; adherence to and espousal of the doctrine/creed are. Thus, true believers can commit the most egregious sins and yet remain within the faith, with or without confession and reform of their ways, whereas the heretic is damned regardless of the virtue of his/her behaviour. The attacks on Palin are perfect examples of this. She is doing all the things feminists espouse: holding down a career, being assertive, breaking the "glass ceiling"; but she is not espousing the lib/left/feminist articles of faith. Therefore she is is attacked as a heretic with demands that she be figuratively burned at the stake (with carbon offsets, of course).
Posted by: DrD at September 16, 2008 4:37 PMIt never ceases to amaze me conservatives ability to ignore reality.
Palin is lying right in the open. Claiming she never supported the bridge, yet she's on the record as doing just that, AND she never gave back the freakin' money!
She claimed to have fought against earmarks, and yet Alaska (alleged home of highly independent Americans) receives more earmarks than any other state.
She claims to have cleaned up the old boys club, and yet she sure has hired a lot of her old friends.
She voted to make women in her town pay for rape tests. (Bravo Christian lady)
She left her town massively in debt.
And finally, she has a teen daughter, knocked up by a boy who describes himself as "a fucking redneck. Now nobody is judging the poor kid, BUT when a parent who opposes sex-ed finds their kid knocked up, and that parent thinks they have the brains to run a country... sorry, but your private life is an open book.
Posted by: John at September 16, 2008 4:51 PMhmmmm, "received wisdom" i could write reams. the left in all its forms, marxist, nazi, commie, ndp, green and at times the liberals are evil. they wish to control the population by any means they think they should use. the current mantra is the environment. if that doesn't work it will be something else. it has not changed throughout human history. the words have changed but the reality hasn't.
Posted by: old white guy at September 16, 2008 5:16 PMA jewish carpenter once said,
Luke 7: 31-35
31 "To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.' 33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.' 34 The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' 35 Yet wisdom is justified by ALL her children."
It is very easy to get self-righteous, but a little more troublesome to do some serious introspection. To really look hard in the mirror, takes humility and that isn't fashionable, at least in public. Hence the Democratic coronation attempt with the full greek columns.
It is a little trite for those seeking public office to parade around like Simon Pure.
The public reaction is likely to be something like Monty Python's stoning send up from the Life of Brian.
Which is also why the Judean Peoples Front skit is so hilarious. The Marxist overlay on the political landscape against the detested Romans was brilliant.
But rather than Pax Romana we now have Pax Americana. The difference today is the the Christian has been invited to the ruling club; rather than being hurled to the media lions.
This of course has the media in pretzels as they think that it is their received wisdom to anoint the next ruler, rather than the sovereign right of the voter at the ballot box.
Suddenly the media have found that the lions teeth have been put in the denture glass on the nightstand. The "McCaining" is about to begin.

DrD, do these "articles of faith" you're ridiculing include reproductive choice? And to get away from judging Palin by the personal, as opposed to the political, how do rate a politician who has fired two chiefs of police for political reasons, and replaced one of them with someone who had to resign a few weeks later because of a sexual harassment scandal? Is this part of your idea of good government and sound public administration?
It is a conceit of some (but by no means all) on the left that you are a racist if and only if you are a conservative.
As a consequence, such people believe that they are free to say anything whatsoever and there will be no political fallout, for by being on the left their hearts are pure.
People like Don Imus (a leftist commentator who called some female basketball players "nappy-headed hos") are thus stunned when they are called to task for their remarks.

David , a leader has some responsibility to hire and fire incompetent "help", from what I'v read I would say that sarah should be held accountable for not acting fast enough on one account. Does the CBC not enjoy the same rights (freedom of expression) as we do?? I watched the bit by Neil Macdonald. Pehaps not what I wanted to hear, but I doubt that it will sway USA polls!
Posted by: Realistik at September 16, 2008 7:09 PMYou're mixing apples and firetrucks, David. There's certainly a virtually endless cornucopia of specific instances and events and ideological battles out there, but I think DrD's point stands, and is more on the narrowed down topic: when people of any stripe become so convinced that they're on the side of (insert glowing, self-laudatory concept here) their behaviour can take on the hallmarks of a secular holy war, meaning, as DrD put it, "true believers can commit the most egregious sins and yet remain within the faith...whereas the heretic is damned regardless of the virtue of his/her behaviour."
If partisans make prurient, utterly false claims that the child of a politician is the product of incest, for example, in the interests of whipping up feelings of vilification for the *other* side, as a sort of limbic tactic that promises total victory, well, that's not really judging by the political. It's fine to judge politicians by their politics as long as you "get away from judging...by the personal."
DrD is also entirely right that Palin does all the things feminists espouse -- being strong, having a career, taking on and spitting out strong men -- but since, in certain feminists' estimation, she's not on the correct side, her family are brutally slandered and she is brutally attacked as being somehow bad for women, and not a feminist. If a certain tribe wishes to limit the definition of a feminist to a woman who votes Democrat, they should just say so in the first place, rather than behaving like such hypocrites by waving ideals they don't actually believe in.

Left wingers tend to have that "tear gas me, I dare you!" look - and think that they are the coolest people in the room.
Facts just don't matter to lefties, it's all about feelings and emotions.
As per the CBC, I must say that Rex Murphy is about the only person I can listen to without becoming angry. I don't know what his politics is - which is the sign of a reasonable broadcaster.

Posted by: spike 1 at September 16, 2008 7:46 PMDavid, she has made reproductive choices to be sure, but apparently not the reproductive "choices" feminists believe she should have made. As for her behaviour on those cases you identify, she should be judged on the basis of the facts pertaining to those decisions. Many of the appointments were political appointments. And bear in mind Bill Clinton fired all 93 US Attorneys with nary a complaint from the left.
But the point pertinent to the topic at hand is that Sarah Palin and her family members were attacked well before those attackers knew or could have known about those cases let alone any of the particulars of those cases. The attacks were immediate and visceral -- nothing to do with firing public servants.

The fact is, it is routine for an incoming US President to replace potentially ALL US Attorneys...they are POLITICAL appointments, not conventional civil service positions. That is just the way it works in the US. It happens all of the time...after each change of government.
One might as well complain about the fact that an incoming President decides to replace the existing Attorney General with his own choice...or the existing Secretary of Defence...Duh...

Rex Murphy: the exception which proves the rule.
I've wanted the CBC to be turned into a true public broadcaster, like PBS in the U.S., that will carry programming that people are actually willing to pay for. I, for one, am tired of my tax dollars going to a quasi-official mouthpiece for the Canadian Liberal Party.

An interesting perspective from brilliant Bloomberg columnist Caroline Baum: "No, the real reason the Democrats are scared to death of Palin's popularity is because if they lose this election, it will mean they are bankrupt as a party. If the Democrats can't win a presidential election after eight years of an unpopular president, five years of an unpopular war, in the face of a lousy economy, a collapse in the housing market and overwhelming sentiment that the country is on the wrong track, it means something is terribly wrong. This is as good as it gets for a party out of power. A loss in November would be embarrassing -- no, humiliating -- to the Democrats.
"If they lose in '08, they will have no one to blame but themselves and Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin has raised the odds of a Democratic loss. That's why she has to be destroyed."
And I agree with Tenebris: "Smith" at 8:48 has to be removed. How did that stuff ever get past the filter?

The role of the journalist is to present the events of the day in a fair, balanced, and unbiased manner. If they want to express their opinions on those events, they should declare that they are engaged in editorializing, not reporting.
We all pay for the CBC, they are not the sole and private property of the left. The CBC was intended to be the nation's broadcaster, not a mouthpiece for the Liberals, NDP, BQ, Greens, and the NDP. If they want to pursue their left of center path, they should get off the public purse, change their name, and apply for an independent broadcasting license.
The CBC used to be a public service, providing news and cultural programming at a time when private companies were not present in most of Canada. They have forgotten who they work for and have outlived their purpose. It is time for the CBC to go.
