Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. I attended a symposium a couple of weeks ago and someone there suggested that it would be neat if SDA LNR could find some classical music where the video showed, scrolling by (for some value of "scrolling"), the actual score being played. And we all agreed that would be cool.
So tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Sunday night classical music show, here is Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter performing Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff's Prelude, Op. 23 No. 5 (1971, 3:48), accompanied by such video.
I only got to trying for grade one in the Royal Conservatory piano shtick (it's not my gig, for as you can see to this day I play the DJ instrument, albeit with a little percussion on the side). Still, I did learn to read music (for some value of "read"), and much to my delight I found that I could (though just barely) keep up with the score in that video (in the sense that at least four times out of five the page changed when I expected it to). Heh, that's fun; I think we'll do it again some day.
| One of our favourite (here in the SDA LNR studios) Rachmaninoff quotes is: "The new kind of music seems to create not from the heart but from the head. Its composers think rather than feel. They have not the capacity to make their works exalt ~ they meditate, protest, analyze, reason, calculate and brood, but they do not exalt." And here's one of our favourite Richter quotes: "Put a small piano in a truck and drive out on country roads; take time to discover new scenery; stop in a pretty place where there is a good church; upload the piano and tell the residents; give a concert; offer flowers to the people who have been so kind as to attend; leave again." | Some Flowers For You |
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

RIYADH, Sept 14 (Reuters) - A senior Saudi cleric has said purveyors of horoscopes on Arab television should face the death penalty, a paper said on Sunday, days after another cleric argued death for TV owners.
"Sorcerers who appear on satellite channels who are proven to be sorcerers have committed a great crime ... and the Muslim consensus is that the apostate's punishment is death by the sword," Sheikh Saleh al-Fozan told al-Madina daily.
"Those who call in to these shows should not be accorded Muslim rites when they die," the prominent cleric added.
Many of the hundreds of Arab satellite channels have sprung up in recent years specialise in horoscopes and other advice to callers on solving problems that is seen as "sorcery".
In their capacity as judges, clerics of Saudi Arabia's austere form of Islam often sentence "sorcerers" to death.

just got an email from our new Provost telling me that I – like everyone else working at the university – must start attending mandatory sexual harassment awareness training sessions every two years. The good news is that I’m going. The bad news is that I’ve gotten some other angry white men together to help me completely disrupt the training sessions.
On October 20th, there will be a meeting of a new campus group called “Faculty Against Sexual Harassment Initiatives and Sensitivity Training” - or FASHIST. I’m the founder of the new group. And the reason I’ve chosen the name FASHIST is twofold:

Following is an excerpt from a religious program featuring Saudi Cleric Muhammad Al-Munajid, which aired on Al-Majd TV on August 27, 2008:
Muhammad Al-Munajid: What is the position of Islamic law with regard to mice? The Shari’a refers to the mouse as “little corrupter,” and says it is permissible to kill it in all cases. It says that mice set fire to the house, and are steered by Satan. The mouse is one of Satan’s soldiers and is steered by him. If a mouse falls into a pot of food – if the food is solid, you should chuck out the mouse and the food touching it, and if it is liquid – you should chuck out the whole thing. "ISR" has become the new silver bullet in counterinsurgency. It stands for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, but it really means a series of new sensors and other electronic collection and analytic gadgets. For the best and most dramatic description of how useful ISR has become in Iraq, there is an article in a recent issue of the Joint Force Quarterly journal written by Lt. Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, who is scheduled to become the new commander of Multi-National Forces-Iraq tomorrow, and two of his subordinates, Lt. Col. Nichoel E. Brooks and Lt. Col. Francesco P. Mastracchio.
"Employment of ISR, according to the current counterinsurgency doctrine, sets the conditions for the initial success of the surge in Iraq," they wrote. Threats come not just from insurgents but also from "militias who at any time might be working with or against each other," but "most are consistently working against coalition forces."

Posted by: Rich at September 15, 2008 12:45 PMThere's a new Harris-Decima poll, just out, which is 'lowering' the Conservative rating, to 38.
Hey - I was called on that poll. I wrote about it on SDA yesterday. It was heavily biased, with leading questions that set up the Conservatives as derelict in food safety. The 'questions' were biased; they contained opinions, suggesting that a federal govt MUST hire 1,000 new food inspectors OR Canadian health will suffer..and informing me that the Conservative Govt had CUT inspection funds.
That was an incredibly biased and unscientific poll. Moreover, it was actually propaganda for the Liberals!
So - we have a polling company phoning up people to campaign against the Conservatives and in favour of the Liberals. And then, releasing their 'poll', pretending its science when its pure propaganda. Neat.

So, where has al-Qaeda found a model to present bin Laden’s grandiose jihadi design to the um’ma? Whom does al-Qaeda’s prototype member or adherent resemble? What qualities does he or she seek to possess? What personal goals does he or she hope to fulfill by participating in al-Qaeda’s “World Islamic Front for Jihad against Jews and Crusaders?”
In short, the Palestinian shahid (martyr), whose glorification in the disputed territories exceeds that of a pop star’s in America, offers the ultimate guide. The shahid carries out the most terrifying of all terrorists’ modus operandi: the suicide-homicide attack. As both a physical and symbolic act, the suicide-homicide attack marks an effective tool of warfare, optimal method of propaganda, and additionally fulfills a culturally defined religious duty. This makes the shahid the perfect weapon for al-Qaeda, which seeks to maximize the willingness of unaffiliated individuals to pursue the ideological prescripts of bin Laden and al-Zawahiri...
Always suspected that about polls, ET, so you have proof.
Harris-Decima is as Liberal as it gets and we know they're playing games with numbers. They like to come out early with Conservatives in the lead and then yo-yo through to the end.
Still say they should be banned at least one week before any election. They tinker with our democratic process, influencing lazy voters who go with the crowd rather than paying attention to the Parties and the issues which affect us all.
Posted by: Liz J at September 15, 2008 2:23 PMGiven the proclivity to ask leading questions and the slant/bias for one party or another, the publication of ALL polls should be banned during an election campaign. I believe they do affect and influence some people's decisions. We have enough bias in the MSM. We could do without the poll takers' preferences - unless they agree to standard/impartial questions and methodology.
Posted by: SomeGuyinOttawa at September 15, 2008 2:36 PMI visited http://www.nodice.ca/elections/canada/polls.php. Decima on Saturday had the Tories at 40%. Their support has ranged from 36% to 40%. Meanwhile, the Liberals who started at 33% are down into the 20's. But these moves of 1-2% are well within the margin of error. True Tory support is probably about 38%. The surprising thing is the Greens have 9-10%, and with the NDP getting 15-18%, they are siphoning Liberal support. Stevie might just run down the middle to a majority.

Islamic law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.
The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence.
Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through county courts or the country's High Court, a part of its Supreme Court system.
Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims.
Politicians and church leaders expressed concerns that this could mark the beginnings of a “parallel legal system” based on sharia for some British Muslims.
Dominic Grieve, the shadow home secretary, said: “If it is true that these tribunals are passing binding decisions in the areas of family and criminal law, I would like to know which courts are enforcing them because I would consider such action unlawful. British law is absolute and must remain so.”

There's a nice post by Lorne Gunter in the National Post, showing how Dion, apart from his inability to speak English, is also deficient in basic arithmetic. That is, his Green Shaft plan doesn't add up; his spending exceeds his income.
http://tinyurl.com/6alety
And, as we all know, Dion's Green Shaft has nothing to do with the environment. Nothing. There's no strategy in it to reduce emissions or pollution. No money for the devt of new technology for those factories. No money for low cost loans to install that new technology whenever it is developed. Instead, Dion REQUIRES pollution and emissions. He taxes them.
And then, he hands over the money to people..in return for votes. Many of these families don't even pay income taxes. For example, his biggest 'rewards' goes to the two-income family with two children with a GROSS income of 20,000. Heh. Then, he's on to 40,000. It dwindles out when you get to about 60,000.
So, he's after really low income people. People who don't pay taxes. He wants their vote.
The environment? It must remain polluted. Otherwise, Dion has no money to buy votes.
The Danny Muggs Williams story of alleged intimidation of Conservatives in Newfoundland must be checked out. His silence on the report by Fife is not a good sign.
Not a word about it in the media today. Has Fife been silenced?
