Do you get the sense that today we witnessed Stephen Harper whitewash a fence?

Hey, let her in.

Then she can be asked why she thinks Canadians are stupid and why her vetting process allows in anti-semites and 9/11 troofers.

Nothing will be better than having more vote-splitting on the left. And the optics of having Dion's big momma stepping in to defend him at every chance (and Dion allowing her to counter Harper) will only further reinforce that he's not a leader.

Bring it on!

Posted by: mike at September 10, 2008 9:33 PM

Excellent Kate, absolutely spot on.

Posted by: kelly at September 10, 2008 9:40 PM

I think it's ridiculous. She represents 1/3% of the seats in the HofC but she is likely to get 20% of the focus in the debate(if not more). There will be a disproportionate focus on the wrong issues and leaders making these debates inconsequential. I don't have to go back too far in my memory to recall the Saskatchewan provincial leaders "debate", or the "debates" in the American primaries:(

Why bother?

Posted by: Indiana Homez at September 10, 2008 9:40 PM

Yes I do, Kate. Still, the old-Canada oligarchy and the misplaced malevolent marxist minions keep hoping that Mr. Harper can be sold down the river (you know you're in trouble when Vitruvius starts groking literary references ;-) Perhaps their tune will change when Ms. May helps split the vote, though I doubt it; perhaps it's congenital, though Sir Winston suggested otherwise.

what is the background of Elizabeht May?

that is good she become VP for Dion

now all conservative who love US American hot momy Sarah Palin give their own woman in canada take her 3 days to talk with Harper taht is intersting how much Candian in conservative clean and shine the shoes of American not their own shoes?

we are look ofr two American coutnry musice

one was tall big hair sing " hot momy"

in Canada still woman struggle to talk and good news in this debate wtih harper he is not going to talk so long and made it short as I noticed harper is barely talk the one hour talk show will end up bettwne Mrs. May and Mr. Harper probaly 10 minitues most likely Harper will anser Yes No may be Yes No May be... with not explanation ( yes to war No to mutlcutrlim and may be some freedom to woman !! from harper expected )

plus Mrs. may is Vp of Dion she has right to talk to Harper instead plus Dion can be change their job if he need to Mrs> May as well

the problms in Canda still majority are not particiape in election may be Canda need to made copon and forece majority to vote by bring their Candain passport stamp that they did vote for some body to let all particiape in this election

Without getting into using derogatory adjectives, how does one deal with screeching, shrill treehuggers who constantly interrupt and chant OMMMM during the discussion.
This Party is irrelevant and if it weren't for the Left Press this issue would have been irrelevant.

Posted by: Rick at September 10, 2008 10:00 PM

Good, now he can ask Elizabeth May how she, a single mother currently earning $50,000 a year, accumulated a multimillion dollar real estate portfolio after a career spent working in low paying jobs in the nonprofit sector.

She's not from a rich family, she waitressed her way through university.

A mansion in Rockliffe Park and a now compound in Nova Scotia. Can't she and her kid get by with a two bedroom condo, by the way? How much does it cost to heat that mansion, and that compound, shared by two people? Where did she get the money?

Maybe a payoff or two from some big oil companies to look the other way on certain matters?

Posted by: Green Is The Colour Of Money at September 10, 2008 10:08 PM

Then again..... the more I think about this, was this part of the Harper strategy to initially balk as if afraid when in fact he saw it as a beautiful opportunity then set up his strategy and everyone fell into the trap. I know that Harper is a master and if this is what he did and it works for him then hats off and bravo to him.

The rules seem to have changed. I do not think she, as leader of the Green Party, should have been let in on the leadership debate based on a turncoat Librano deciding to switch hats prior to the election. No duly elected party riding seat no inclusion on the debate. We will have to see if the PC party's reversal on this issue was the right one.

this will be one of the most insane political contests in the history of the world

A couple of observations from an old guy one from "Forrest Gump" "stupid is as stupid does" and another from Michel DeMontaigne 1533-92
"Stubbornly and ardently clinging to ones opinion is the best proof of stupidity" .... that would be you-all Elizabeth May you are so full of yourself and your stupid, unproven belief in global warming, climate change, or whatever else you dress it up in next week. It is a silly theory being milked for all it is worth by frauds. England is groaning under the weight of "green taxes" and the realization that this winter many people will be unable to heat their homes sure does not sound like progress to me. Meanwhile the high priest of your crackpot religion just bought a 100 foot house boat with two diesel motors and a jet ski hanging off the back. Canadian "Diesel Davy" Him with the weird commercials with him up in a tree house with some kids, he doesn't live in a tree house has what 3 homes the one on saltspring has been described as a resort has anyone out there been able to google -map this? I would guess his "charitable foundation" controls all this for tax purposes, am I right folks?? I mean the elite shouldn't have to pay like us common folk. I think S Harper is following one of Napoleon"s Maxims " do not interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake" Let Canadians have a good look at these fools they are financing.

BIG mistake. The greens finished second in just two ridings in the last general - and one of those was myron Thompson's where they got less than 10%. This opens the door for every crank party to demand equal status at the debate. Sure it's no big deal this election but in future what's to stop a white supremacist party or a native party from demanding equal time?

Official party status should be the demarcation line. And yes I know that would have meant that the refine party would not have been permitted into the debate back when they only had a handful of seats - I opposed it then and I oppose it now.

This gives Ms. May an opportunity to speak to her rather frank admission that she joins environmental organizations purely to meet movie stars:

"I was staying on (the committee) in hopes of meeting Pierce Brosnan."

Full context:

"Ms. May, who has long been a member of the society’s advisory board, decided during the course of a telephone interview Thursday that she should resign.

"It doesn’t mean overall the Sea Shepherd society has not done good work, but as the leader of a federal political party, I probably shouldn’t be on an advisory committee," she said from New York, where she was taking part in a panel discussion. "I was staying on (the committee) in hopes of meeting Pierce Brosnan. Say I’ll withdraw from the advisory committee, and I’ll e-mail Paul later."

Let's see, a debate involving a leftist, another leftist, another leftist and another leftist who is also a separatist, and Harper being questioned by a leftist reporter, another leftist reporter and another leftist reporter who is also a separatist, refereed by a leftist moderator.
Sounds like riveting television to me.
I'll be watching Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck instead.

Posted by: Ghost of Ed at September 10, 2008 10:34 PM

I don't agree, Gord. The "debates" have become a joke anyways, so why not encourage them to completely discombobulate? It's not like we don't have alternatives. And then maybe after a time, or a few times anyway, the debate industry will get their act back together. Sort of like arguments in blog comments: the dialecticism to noise ratio is, at this juncture in history, stunningly low. I'll tell you what, I'll bring the onions, you bring the wooden stake.

Hey, if they are going to debate the Green Party, why not the Marijuana Party, Communist Party, or any number of fringe parties.

Apparently, some LIEberal candidate was comparing PM Stephen Harper to Hitler and was apologizing all over the place.

Liberal candidate apologizes for Nazi comments

I look forward to the debate when the LIEberals give PMSH the straight arm salute.

I can see the level of debate has so measurably dragged itself out of the gutter. Yep highbrow politics has visited itself on the people once again.

Nothing like discussing Herr Harper Hitler! Is this really a federal election or juvenile deliquent behaviour at taxpayer expense?

I think PM Stephen Harper will have his opponents mopping the floor, in addition to white washing the fence, if this keeps up.

I don't think the Conservatives benefit from May's inclusion in the debate. Rather than splitting the leftist vote, May's shrewish rants are likely to drive her fellow RDS sufferers (Reality Detachment Syndrome) into the spindly arms of the next best imitation of a space alien - Stephane Dion.

And hey, New up there. Good luck with your Grade 3 exam. If you try hard you may not have to do it again.

Posted by: Jim303 at September 10, 2008 11:00 PM

Aren't there 4 Independants sitting in H of C currently? How do they get a voice? Can they now enter the debate? Just curious.

Posted by: Sammy at September 10, 2008 11:04 PM

A "debate" amongst five leaders is as good as a "debate" amongst no leaders. It will be virtually impossible for any coherent debate to actually occur. Either it will simply be a platform for each leader to make their stump speech or it will degenerate into a squabble with May acting as cheer leader for Dion. I'll give this circus a miss.

Posted by: DrDave at September 10, 2008 11:09 PM

If the other parties want to make up ground on Harper, then you would think they would want Harper to speak and possibly make a mistake. Or that they would want to go 1 on 1 with him. With May in there, Harper will get just 20% of the air-time.

Posted by: sf at September 10, 2008 11:09 PM

Today we witnessed the whitewashing of the fence, for sure. At the debate we will watch the shooting of fish in a barrel. May and Dion will be the fish, Jack Bin Layton and Whatsisname the BQ weenie will be doing the shooting, and Harper's going to lean back and let them go to it.

"This is my theory, and what it it too."

Posted by: The Phantom at September 10, 2008 11:17 PM

Exactly, Dr. Dave. What I'd like to see is a triangular matrix of one-hour one-on-one interviews pairing each of the five candidates, as hosted by Mr. Rex Murphy, on generic feed (not the CBC). Sure, one might say, but Vitruvius, that's 14 hours of interviews. Still, at least for those who care about Canada, it would be interesting.

"Mounting public outrage over shutting out a political leader"?? I have a sneaking suspicion that the so-called "public outrage" was manufactured by the left-leaning media. Hell, the majority of Canadians probably don't even know Elizabeth May from Elizabeth II. This raving lunatic does not deserve to participate in the leaders' debate. She is the head of a fringe party whose only claim to fame is having one seat in the House of Commons ... and that was attained by a sheer fluke. I wonder if May would have been given so much attention by the media had she been the leader of a right-wing fringe party?

Her participation in the debate will undoubtedly consist of nothing more than shrill interruptions and Dion cheerleading. Previous debates were bad enough .... her inclusion will reduce them to debacle level.

Posted by: biff jr. at September 10, 2008 11:33 PM

I think Kate's right -- not that Mr. Harper has any sense of strategy, or anything. Ah hoo ha ha.

A parable:

Once upon a time there were three junkyard dogs named Harpdog, Jack and Lizzie. Harpdog was the biggest, toughest and wiliest; Jack postured most aggressively because his chain was so short that he was in no danger of having to back up his bark with a bite.

Lizzie, who was new to the area, had her eyes set on a patch of turf belonging to a house cat named Stephane, the favoured pet of an established, corrupt and armed junk dealer who was a bane to everyone in the area. Each time Lizzie encroached on Stephane's turf, though, Harpdog kept her away.

Finally, just as Lizzie was foaming at the mouth in her frustrated frenzy, Harpdog calmly jumped up and unlatched the gate to Stephane's compound, and walked away.

Meow.

That is actually a good idea, Vitruvius. Minor point of detail: I add it to 10 hours. 2 hours per week over 5 weeks is a practical possibility. You may have something there.

Posted by: Brent Weston at September 10, 2008 11:38 PM

My mistake, Brent, you are correct at 10 hours: Harper v. Dion, Harper v. Layton, Harper v. Duceppe, Harper v. May, Dion v. Layton, Dion v. Duceppe, Dion v. May, Layton v. Duceppe, Layton v. May, and Duceppe v. May. This is the classic combinations formula (where ! represents factorial):

n! ÷ ( r! × ( n - r ) ! )

where n is the number of debaters, and r is 2 (pairs of debaters) which produces the following number of hours of debate as a function of the number of debaters: 2: 1, 3: 3, 4: 6, 5: 10, 6: 15, 7: 21, 8: 28, and 9: 36. Clearly, there must remain some sort of upper limit on the total number of debaters, which is probably a good argument against proportional representation.

Posted by: Vitruvius at September 11, 2008 12:18 AM

Occam's Razor suggests we could, er, slice things a little differently: a more specialized form of the generalized factorial. There are 5 debaters who must each debate 4 opponents for 1 hour (5 * 4 * 1 = 20). Because each hour is counted twice (2 debaters per debate), we adjust (20 / 2 = 10). Just checking our answer before we hand in the exam.

A modification to my earlier post is to bump it back up to 15 hours. The last 5 hours could be a 1 hour session with only the interviewer. If the previous 2 hours per week were expanded to 3 hours per week, a schedule could be generated where each leader has exactly one hour per week over the 5 weeks. Canadians get to see each leader for exactly 1 hour each and the leaders have only 1 hour each week. It is still somewhat practical.

Posted by: Brent Weston at September 11, 2008 12:39 AM

lets hope that Dizzy Miss Lizzy May has been practicing her french. with Dion in the debates you really hate to finish in last place in either official language.

Posted by: cal at September 11, 2008 12:46 AM

I will be tuning in to the Biden-Palin debate. At least it will be interesting...instead of 4 against 1. With the inclusion of May today, these debates here have become a total farce.

Posted by: Barb at September 11, 2008 12:49 AM

Its just entertainment, nothing monumental. If May wants to debate, so what? It just raises the entertainment value a tenth of a notch. I think Layton will be the big loser here. Dion will come out even and Harper, if he continues to whitewash the fence, could come out on top. He (Harper) just has to be cool and not get drawn into any goofy puffin poop.

With or without May, the debates will still be fairly boring, as usual. I think boxing or greco-roman wrestling would be a better way to choose a winner.

Posted by: John Nicklin at September 11, 2008 1:16 AM

Well, um, not to put too fine a point on it, but the combinations
formula, n ! ÷ ( r ! × ( n - r ) ! ), is the more specialized form of
the generalized factorial, at least as relevant to our conjecture.

Say you had 17 debaters and they met 4 at a time, how many debates
would you have? Answer: 17 ! ÷ ( 4 ! × ( 17 - 4 ) ! ) = 2,380 debates.

Now how many parties do you want?

More like the Brer Rabbit story.

"Brer Rabbit's eyes got very large. "Oh please Brer Fox, whatever you do, please don't throw me into the briar patch."

"Maybe I should roast you over a fire and eat you," mused Brer Fox. "No, that's too much trouble. Maybe I'll hang you instead."

"Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please," said Brer Rabbit. "Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch."

"If I'm going to hang you, I'll need some string," said Brer Fox. "And I don't have any string handy. But the stream's not far away, so maybe I'll drown you instead."

"Drown me! Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please," said Brer Rabbit. "Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch."

"The briar patch, eh?" said Brer Fox. "What a wonderful idea! You'll be torn into little pieces!

Grabbing up the tar-covered rabbit, Brer Fox swung him around and around and then flung him head over heels into the briar patch. Brer Rabbit let out such a scream as he fell that all of Brer Fox's fur stood straight up. Brer Rabbit fell into the briar bushes with a crash and a mighty thump. Then there was silence.

Brer Fox cocked one ear toward the briar patch, listening for whimpers of pain. But he heard nothing. Brer Fox cocked the other ear toward the briar patch, listening for Brer Rabbit's death rattle. He heard nothing.

Then Brer Fox heard someone calling his name. He turned around and looked up the hill. Brer Rabbit was sitting on a log combing the tar out of his fur with a wood chip and looking smug.

"I was bred and born in the briar patch, Brer Fox," he called. "Born and bred in the briar patch."

And Brer Rabbit skipped away as merry as a cricket while Brer Fox ground his teeth in rage and went home."

I think this will prove to a good move for the Conservative element of this country. The total drivel that Miss May spews will be exposed to the whole country. What amazes me with her is that when she talks she is convinced that what she is preaching is gospel when in reality when you analyze what she says it makes no sense at all. Dion and Layton have also mastered this art. Jack Layton is now preaching that he is going to create 40,000.00 manufacturing jobs in the "GREEN SECTOR". At a minimum of $100,000.00 investment per job that is going to cost the taxpayers $4,000,000,000.00. That is a lot of zeroes. These people are too disconnected from reality for words.Let the games begin.

Who's going to "moderate" this five-ring circus? As others have pointed out, it's already four lib-lefties to one Conservative.

If, as is likely, the CBC brings on one of their attack dogs to moderate--unless it's Rex Murphy--it'll be five against one.

'Good thing Stephen Harper's focused and disciplined. I just hope when this left-fest lets loose, most Canadians will see it for what it is: the juvenile, looney-tunes, untouched-by-reality left, vs the adult, no-nonsense, live-in-the-real-world-and-governing-very-nicely-thank-you-CPC.

Stephen Harper's theme song:

Jack and Gilles to the left of me...
Steffi and Lizzie further to the left...
Here I am, down Alice's Rabbit Hole again.

I hope everyone recognizes Eliza May as the latter-day Queen of Hearts.

Miss May will publicly proclaim that the liberals fiscal policy is too left wing socialist and "her party's fiscal policy is conservative in nature".
(Which of course it's not)
That will attract soft conservatives that are typically detached from the political discussion but own a "cottage up north, and really LOVE nature."can't stand the corruption and promised themselves they would never vote liberal again.
This is a mistake.
It sound to me like the MSM has given up promoting Dion even they can see the poll numbers for Dion personally are too low, and are now working on promoting the Dion and May team.

May will do all the talking in English for Dion's environmental cause ,
The MSM the Liberals, Block, Greens and the NDP will all make this against the dirty TAR SANDS and for the environment; all ganging up on conservatives, who are the gubmint of the day thereby loathed by most. It will be tough job to make conservative policy look centrist while surrounded by socialsts and they're monolithic media cheerleaders.
Big Mistake.

Posted by: Tony W at September 11, 2008 10:01 AM

I don't like it, but at the end of the day the other 4 parties all talk a certain line and the conservatives get to pick up whoever doesnt agree with them.

So you have one brand of Tide and 4 Discount brands. I'd rather be Tide.

The debates will be a mess....all Harper has to do is speak past them and not descend into the squabble. May is bomb thrower, her lines are all known...Harper's team will undoubtably be prepared.

In fact it becomes a perfect example of a minority Parliament, after watching them scrap for 2 hours the question becomes, "is this waht you want for the next 4 years? or do you want to get something done?"

Posted by: Stephen at September 11, 2008 10:29 AM

richfisher: "It sound[s] to me like the MSM has given up promoting Dion even they can see the poll numbers for Dion personally are too low, and are now working on promoting the Dion and May team."

Just caught PMSH on the telly saying that having Eliza May at the debate is "unprecedented in any democracy" and patently "unfair," while said media outlet--in this case, the CBC--is out front and cheerleading for Ms May, giving her lots of coverage, which amounts to free advertising for a political leader who hasn't even been elected by the Canadian people.

PMSH made the point that, essentially, Dion/May is a coalition and that to allow them to speak as one is not fair.

I'm in agreement with him. I think it was a mistake for the consortium and Taliban Jack Laydown to back down, but my hope is that Eliza May's shrieking and her singularly unattractive presentation of her platform scuttle any chances she has of being elected or hurting PMSH's chances at the polls. Her showing her true colours might just have unintended consequences for her run at a seat in the HOC. I hope so.

Posted by: batb at September 11, 2008 10:55 AM

Now that's not very politically correct...but it was kind of funny.

I support May being in the debate and not because it provides more lefties. If people looked closer at the Green party policy you might find more righty stuff than you think. I support her being there because it is the democratic thing to do. The swell of public opinion confirms that.

I also support it because the public will have a opportunity to see more of her and assess her as a leader/debater for themselves. Unless you actually get to see someone in an environment like a debate you don't get much of a sense of them. Photo ops and quicky blurps on the MSM show little because of their propensity for pre scripting.

I remember the first time I saw Jack Layton in a debate. Ouch! Poor fellow was so anxious to get his licks in and some time in the spotlight that he came across very poorly.

Now it's May's ball to run with. Let's see if she can handle only being able to put forward a fraction of her policies and keep her cool. It's a delicate balance between end runs and the long ball.

As far as Harper's part is concerned, I think it was wise he decided to change his position. It would also be wise not to caterwaul about it.

Hugger: "I support her being there because it is the democratic thing to do. The swell of public opinion confirms that."

"The swell of public opinion" was, apparently, 80,000 people--out of a population of 33,000,000 this is "a swell"?

Would it also be "the democratic thing to do" to allow the Christian Heritage Party in on the debate? Apparently, they're asking to be part of it, as well. And why not?

As for my upside-down pumpkin remark: It wasn't meant to be politically correct... ;-)

ok
what the harper says and what the Liberal says
what these two are main differences and their main similatires are

for example cut the porn from internet totally from Yaho or google what these two are opinion are

for security of cities and gun control what these are debating

for abortion what tehse two are debating

for war what their idea

other important topis:

tax

busienss grow and economic growth and development

family value
health care
education

how they devide their funding if each become elcted

multicultrim and Muslim issue how these two are debating in regard to Hrc

and more important topic these topic must be selcted and every day talk about it and then in debate only we know the main issue and what or how they are going to update thier past mistake

so far we learn from republican McCain is too old na probably talk short like Harper who may look younger but act older than his age adn probably both are sleeping by 8 pm has not energy to tlak or go to debate after 8 pm

for woman like Palin we learn Conservative hat Muslim in left who liek Tablen force woman do not go to school or cover thier face are we instead of help Afgaintn are we plan to cut their clotn in half or revmove cloth off like Palin since I do not trust Republic like good owman they like sexy woman instead or secreotr if we think too far to left to cut all right from Msuim and then think in too right to take their cloth off by men order in nonMuslim as one guy comment smaking woman or step child adn JC while Jc is black and probaly you must like Obma while you hate Obama for his color

therefore how we or goverment can give more freedom to woman not in misuse or mismange or misdirect hem but alo give tem valu use their bran and give htem more personaliy and money and more support to them and to their children to work and use thier talent in poliic and all levels in country in Canda

what program both paties are look for
are we have to still seen woman walk top less in Canada are we have to see proud Gay in street

if Gay are lik to go sleep with otehr men
tehn why we have to allow them thier yearly once a year street walk of them saying we love to sleep with each otehr then we ahve to let all men and woman married to have pray in street and saying we are maried and like to slep togehter

hwo govmernt can cut the bad culture maong White English we do not l ike to see Gay pray what is good about it to see Gay pray or see nake woman in street why they have right to show it and our eyes must see it

tehre is so many thing they can argue in Canada

court stystem in Canada is sting in civil court only suport big companies how we can cut all brockrasy in Canda and speed those real claim

and so many other important issue that each group how their plan is for Muslim Canadian freedom of speech and their culture in limit
