If the US supported Saddam Hussein, and supported the Taliban, it certainly seems proper that they should correct their mistakes. American support for undesirables is used by Americans as an excuse for noninvolvement in the Middle East and Afghanistan, when in fact it is quite the opposite. I don't know much about metallurgy - not even sure how to spell it! - but I did spend two years in a steel mill after high school. I learned, by leaning on my broom and passing the time in careful observation, that it takes a surprisingly small amount of heat and pressure to turn steel into just about any shape you want. No need to melt it; just heat it and roll it.

Re the speed of sound, I had 33 years in the Royal Canadian Artillery including a tour as the Chief Instructor at the School of Artillery. We timed the 'flash to bang' to determine how far away a round or an explosion was, and we used three seconds per kilometer as the speed of sound is about 333 metres per second at sea level at 59 degrees F. That is darn close to 1100 feet per second. (The artillery has been doing this for a very long time; Kipling included it in one of his poems about the Boer War.)You can do the same thing in a thunderstorm to see how far away the lightning is.

Well, gee, Roger, then I guess I didn't personally handle a Northwest Airlines 747-cargo diverting to Winnipeg with smoke in the cockpit, and I guess those scared pilots weren't actually doing 330 knots a scant 2000 feet above the ground.

Here's the thing: Descent makes you go faster without even trying. As an air traffic controller, I've learned one very key rule. Planes can go really fast, and they can go really slow as well, at any altitude. Usually, they do the opposite of what you need.

BAR: In the days before metric, as Boy Scouts, we were taught to estimate the distance of lightning by seeing the flash, and counting until we heard the bang, and dividing by 5 to get miles away. Since a mile is 5,280 feet, dividing by 5 gives a rough speed of just over 1,000 fps, near enough to your estimate as damn is to swearing. So I agree with you, I don't know what Roger is talking about.
