Where the foxes caper unmolested, the government packs your school lunch, and I suggest they replace them with seal fur;
Military chiefs are to meet with an animal rights group on Tuesday to discuss alternatives to the traditional bearskin hats famously worn by the guards at Buckingham Palace.People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) are to hold talks with Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials to put forward what they say are ethical alternatives to the 18-inch (46-centimetre) tall fur hats worn by army guards.
So whats next? Are they going to take out the meat in the MRE's for the British Military?
Posted by: Blue Youth at September 1, 2008 12:43 AMGenuine Saskatchewan Sealskin! Good for the economy and tastes good too.
Posted by: kelly at September 1, 2008 1:34 AMIt has everything to do with destroying tradition and very little to do with saving bears. Literally thousands (probably millions) of wild animals are killed every year in collisions with automobiles. So I guess we should ban all forms of motorized transport to save these animals. Oops I shouldn't give them ideas. Well I'm going to roast some meat over an open fire at the beach on Labour Day. PETA, I'll be thinking of you(not) while enjoying the food.

Posted by: mike at September 1, 2008 1:36 AMWhy would the military brass even agree to meet with this pack of lunatics? This only serves to give some degree of undeserved legitimacy to these degenerates and their cause. Will those in authority ever muster enough intestinal fortitude to tell special interest groups to take a hike?
Posted by: biff jr. at September 1, 2008 1:55 AMBiff, you are so right. If I knew how to do it,I would send pixs of the saran wrap babes to give them a heads-up.On second thought, that would just prolong it...I could dress up in a polar bear costume and eat children in Mississagua(sp.maybe)(I like dark meat)and these peta people would be screaming that the bears are undernourished.
Posted by: wallyj at September 1, 2008 3:24 AMIt's doubtful that the brass would be dealing with this without pressure from their Labour masters. It's a sham. The culling of the black bear is becoming more, not less, important as the Disneyfication of them has made them tamer and more dangerous. Besides, this isn't a massive slaughter and the hats are preserved. The bearskins are passed on from one generation to the next. The one I wore some 40 years ago was dated from World War I. If the Guards regiments go synthetic, then the beneficiaries will undoubtedly be a number of Canadian regiments who could buy them at fire sale prices. (unless the animal whackos get to them as well.)
Posted by: Pidd at September 1, 2008 4:51 AMThe shame as the UK has so rapidly become a "failed" democratic state...under attack by Peta, the Islamic mosques and within by their own PC Fifth Column.
If Canada does not grasp the lessons to be learned fast - it too will be next.
And please - no one tell me the laws against Nazis (7 left?) in the EU are better as the muslims here are using them to batter the culture, infrastructure and traditions the same way the CIC is using the examples of the CJC, B'nai Brith and SWC (with the CHRC) to create havoc and "Maximum disruption".
Posted by: The LS from SK at September 1, 2008 5:44 AMMy prescription would be a course of MP's wailing on these little bastards with truncheons for about five minutes, repeat if signs of infection re-occur.
Posted by: Mike James, ThD (Doctor of Thumping) at September 1, 2008 6:44 AMNot seal skin, but pig skin. That'll keep the muzzies away.
The Empire on which the sun never sets has truly gone down the tubes and the sun set on it long ago.
History tells us the dissenters have always been amongst us. As long as these people exist and can communicate with each other, we will have organized action, whether for good or ill.
To prevail, the majority must reinforce its authority. If ignoring the dissenters does not work, then society must use more and more force until its will is re-imposed.
Unfortunately, we live in a time when fewer and fewer people care to impose their majority views. In the mean time, the rabble rousers have learned that the more strident they become the more disruption they create.
The solution, crack heads when they get out of line. Otherwise ignore them.
Posted by: Rosco at September 1, 2008 7:37 AMSo black bears are endangered species now?
Posted by: Texas Canuck at September 1, 2008 8:05 AMFine, let's compromise - make the new hats 45 centimeters.
Posted by: MikeM at September 1, 2008 9:54 AMI thought the Brits tried a synthetic but it held the heat and some of the Gaurd ate pavement when they passed out in the sun.
Posted by: Speedy at September 1, 2008 10:24 AMHow about making Guard hats out of the skins of PETA members?
Posted by: Dave in Pa. at September 1, 2008 10:24 AMSpeedy: I think you're right about the army having a go with the synthetic gear in a limited test. The big concern, if I remember correctly, is that the hats 'lost their shape' and tended to look goofy. As for the heat, I can attest to that with the bearskin. It can get very hot in the summer and it's not unusual to see some lads-without-breakfast fall flat. On the other hand, in November, like the old Great Coat, it's terrific!
Posted by: Pidd at September 1, 2008 10:38 AM"Fur farming has been outlawed in Britain but we are paying other people with taxpayers' money."
Canadians farm black bears for their fur? Who knew?
And, Dave in Pa., if they did that, they'd be too smelly for the Guardsmen to wear.
Posted by: andycanuck at September 1, 2008 10:43 AMThe Guards should "grin and bear it".
Just drove across Ontario and I saw more bears than any other species. Deer and moose used to be the most plentiful.
The lack of a spring bear hunt has certainly caused a surge in black bear population in this province.
Posted by: Earl the Pearl at September 1, 2008 10:45 AMDamnit Dave, you got that one before me.
I wanna see the Canadian bear farm where those hats come from. "Whats that out in that there field, Martha? Looks like... bears!"
Maybe we can use the PETA crew as food and entertainment for the poor ol' bears down on the farm. Chuck one over the fence whenever Yogi and BooBoo are looking a little bored.

It rubs the lotion on its skin...
Posted by: Edward Teach at September 1, 2008 3:40 PMRegrettably, a suitable alternative continues to prove elusive.
"Baroness Taylor will be meeting representatives from Peta this week.
"This is a private meeting and it would be inappropriate to speculate on what will be discussed," she added.
I know what I would do. Revive the old practice of keel hauling PETA's members. This say's it all including the snide comment about it being out of place to talk about her meeting. Give me a break! Why would any one take these pathetic lunatics seriously unless they happened to be shy of any brain matter. Could be there as crazy as PETA.
Posted by: Revnant Dream at September 1, 2008 8:44 PM"British Columbia's black bear population is currently at an historic high. The Wildlife Branch estimates that 120,000 to 160,000 black bears live in British Columbia, having increased from around 80,000 in 1870. (Demarchi 1999). This is nearly 30% of the 443,000 black bears in the Canadian population and approximately 15% of the 803,000 black bears in the North American population (Samuel and Jackson 2000)."
In B.C., we have bears to spare, and then some. Prince George a few years back, had over 700 complaints about bears in the city.
Some would look real good as hats for the Guards.
Posted by: dmorris at September 1, 2008 10:07 PM"So whats next? Are they going to take out the meat in the MRE's for the British Military?"
Blue Youth:
I am shocked beyond belief by your comment. You mean that is meat in those MRE's". Wait 'till the word gets out to the troops. The mystery is resolved!
And they did try to phase out the bear in bearskins about a dozen years ago. Didn't work then. Unlikely to work now. We airforce types never wore 'em. Can't get the canopies closed with them on.

Posted by: John the Mad at September 1, 2008 10:27 PMZaNuLabour hates the military and despises tradition. The wearing of the bearskin dates back to Waterloo as I understand it. Blair, Brown and their cronies have disbanded regiments in Britain that had centuries of tradition. They have destroyed the House of Lords and they have rewritten the law so that they can no longer be hung for treason. The recession which is sweeping the UK will have one good outcome. It will be the end of Labour once and for all. When the next election comes they will be wiped out.
Posted by: LT at September 2, 2008 2:04 AMSorry Kate...it only gets worse. When I read this I thought it might be London, Ontario...but NOT YET.
From No Apologies:
Municipal Council near London asked to honour Ramadan
Published by Site Editor at 9:52 pm under Daily News
It’s been called “Eurabia”, and here’s another reason why.
Municipal councillors in a part of East London, England have been sent an email asking them not to eat anything during their town hall meetings while the Muslim month of Ramadan is underway. That month starts this coming weekend.
All elected members of the Tower Hamlets Council - irrespective of their religious affliation - have been asked to follow strict Islamic fasting guidelines during the month of September.
The leadership on the Council has also decided to reduce the number of meetings during the month so there’s no conflict with some of the other requirements of Ramadan, and meeting which are still scheduled will include special prayer breaks to accomodate Muslim councillors.
Some members of the Hamlet Council - which is dominated by members of the Labour party - aren’t going along with this.
Dr Stephanie Eaton leads a Liberal-Democrat faction on the Council. She says she’ll ignore the restrictions.
“Liberal Democrats,” she said, “have enormous respect for the contribution of all faith groups and cultures to the life of the community of Tower Hamlets.
“But we fervently believe that the rules of any one religion should not be imposed upon others.”
seems to me that bears are a renewable natural resource. Totally compostable, totally recyclable.
Posted by: carboho at September 2, 2008 8:18 PMNo LS, here in London Ontario our city council is jumping McShify's gun and has banned all pesticides (a year early) and is looking for new and exiting ways to ensure the highest tax juristiction outside Europe spends even MORE money of useless leftard insanity.
Posted by: Warwick at September 3, 2008 12:22 PMMeanwhile, in the woods north of Melfort, my brother-in-law is tired of bear hunting because all his friends and family have all the rugs they can use. He's never seen so many bears.
It's bear season right now. I'm hoping to go up on the 27th.
