Posted by: Melanie at August 1, 2008 11:11 PMIs anyone else using XP with IE7.0 having trouble opening U.S. political sites tonight?
I get a Windows popup reading something like "IE cannot open this site and is aborting" that pops-up after it looks like the page has opened properly. I can't open Hot Air, Ace of Spades HQ, and Patterico. But I can open Newsbusters and Power Line, various Canadian blogs and some hobby sites I went to. I had no problems with the same sites in mid-late afternoon.
I've run anti-virus software today without receiving any bad news; and removed all the cookies the AVG software found.

For some reason I can't open JacksNewswatch. The site opens and then a box opens telling me that it can't open it and when I click OK, it closes. Odd!!

Based on what I've been able to read so far, there appears to be some erronious interaction between some versions of IE, and (probably, I'm surmizing so far) some update to SiteMeter that was deployed today; Glenn Reynolds has noted the problem and hacked a temporary solution by removing SiteMeter from his Instapundit site for now. Probably SiteMeter will fix the problem soon, assuming my conjecture is correct, so I'd advise standing by for now.
Posted by: Vitruvius at August 2, 2008 12:08 AMIt does seem like a sitemeter problem, the status bar shows sitemeter query, when accessing certain sites, its also related to the latest java update

Exactly one week before the Olympic torch was due to be lit in Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium, a total eclipse of the Sun yesterday darkened China's skies, a troublesome omen in a year marked by bad luck.

"The court agreed being of good moral character is appropriate for being a police officer but the police should have gone beyond the fact the individual has a criminal past."
I would think that of all the criteria used to determine if a person is qualified to be a police officer that a criminal history would be quite high on the list.
NOTE: This case was decided by the Quebec HRC before it went to the SCC.

Strange, the apparent lack of public alarm in Britain over an extensive new poll showing that significant minorities of Muslim students at some of Britain's better colleges and universities embrace the most threatening aspects of Islam. These include the conviction that killing in the name of religion can be justified (32 percent), belief that men and women shouldn't mix freely (40 percent), support for Sharia (Islamic law) in Britain (40 percent), and support for a global caliphate (33 percent) based in Sharia, among other repressive tenets.

Posted by: ron in kelowna at August 2, 2008 11:28 AMNo, Penny, no conspiracy. It's a Sitemeter coding problem affecting IE7.0 and, I've read elsewhere, IE6. But here's a fix for IE7.0 users (I don't know about IE6) until Sitemeter fixes the mess it created:
This fix was posted by a Hot Air commenter (scroll down for Gideon7 and a another commenter who did the fix and it worked):
http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/02/sitemeter-attacks/
To fix... click on the menu Tools -> Internet Options.
Click on the tab Security.
Click on the icon Restricted Sites.
Click on the button Sites.
Type the text *.sitemeter.com
Click the Add button.
That will fix the problem on the client side.
I did it first typing the *.sitemeter.com with the www. because the existing line in the text window included the www. URL for Google (my home page), but it didn't work. So I retyped it just keying-in the *.sitemeter.com and it works fine now, including for opening comments sections.
I was firt able to get affected sites to load by hitting the "X Stop" loading button like a madman as soon as the page loaded, so I was able to read the above fix at Hot Air.
Several blogs have turned off their Sitemeter, like Ace of Spades HQ, so the main pages are loading okay now, but haven't done so for their comments sections (like Hot Air and Ace's, still), so these are still aborting. So it is worth it to do the above fix.
All my bookmarked blogs and their comments sections, including Dust My Broom that wouldn't open for me after 5 p.m. yesterday too, are all working for me now after doing the fix, above.

"Afghan clashes leave over 2 dozen militants dead
Xinhua ^ | 8/2/08 | Jiang Yuxia
Conflicts in Afghanistan have left more than two dozens anti-government militants dead in a single day on Friday, officials said Saturday.
Afghan forces backed by the U.S.-led Coalition troops eliminated more than 12 insurgents in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province, a press release of the troops issued here Saturday said.
"Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces killed more than a dozen militants during a security patrol in Shaheed Hasas District, Uruzgan province Friday," the press release said.
The militants engaged the troops with small arms and indirect fire but caused no casualties.
Another press release issued by the Coalition forces said several insurgents were killed in the western Farah province on the same day.
"Coalition forces killed several militants during an operation in Farah province Friday night," the press release noted.
The militants' location was pinpointed through intelligence reports to a remote area known to be a safe haven for Taliban and foreign fighters, it added.
After the militants were positively identified and US forces determined that there were no non-combatants in the area, Coalition aircraft carried out an air strike leaving several militants dead, it said.
Moreover, Asmatullah Alizai, the police chief of eastern Paktia province, told Xinhua that firefight between police and the insurgents left eight rebels dead on Friday."

//web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/oxygen-0731.html
"Major Discovery from MIT Primed to Unleash Solar Revolution"
Apparently Prof Daniel Nocera has devised a simple method to split water molecules and produce oxygen gas, a discovery that paves the way for large scale use of solar power.
During the day, the sun's power is used to power the house and to split the molecules.
Then during the night the molecules are recombined to generate nite time power.
Next day it starts all over again.
Each house would probably have its own power unit.
Brilliant.
It is hoped to be fully useable within 10 years time.
The process is carbon free and a giant leap for clean energy.
Its a great article.
Gee I wonder how far the oil prices will drop when the Middle East oil producers find out about it?
