Update - for those who are disappointed that progress in Iraq isn't being reported by our mainstream press, be patient. I predict only a few more weeks shall pass before photos like this are gracing the CBC National, while Peter Mansbridge gravely reports that the "Bush-led invasion of Iraq brings fears of spiraling rates of obesity and heart disease..."
Posted by Kate at July 19, 2008 7:41 AMThis is great to see. It would not be posted in MSM. To them we have already failed the Afghan's. When you have to look on blog site's for actual proof of what we have done over there, they are the failure of themselves. I suggest everybody stops buying a paper for 1 month. It would not be long before they starting asking themselves if they have crossed the line of honesty.
Posted by: Merle Underwood at July 19, 2008 10:07 AMSorry, is that Afghanistan or Iraq? I've got to admit my knowledge of Arabic scripts is rather below par. Either way, it's great to see enterprise and prosperity returning for these people. Lord knows they deserve it. I look forward to the day I can travel there, tour the country, and sit down to share a cool glass of lemonade on a hot day with a few of the locals. God bless 'em all.
Posted by: DrDave at July 19, 2008 10:36 AMAddendum: Seems I've had to change my nom de blog from DrD to DrDave to avoid getting caught in Kate's spam filter. Am I really that annoying? Gosh, this new handle makes me feel so naked!
Posted by: DrDave at July 19, 2008 10:39 AMDo they serve extra crispy?
Posted by: tower at July 19, 2008 10:45 AM"I suggest everybody stops buying a paper for 1 month..
1 month ?
How exactly does that 'solution' help? An analogy would be to for a drug user to stop using for 1 month and then go right back to the habit.
1 month is better than nothing but not really by much.
Just say NO. Don't buy a copy EVER. It's pretty much ALL propaganda anyway. I will read an article if it is referenced on a blog or if the columnist has a good record, but otherwise, not so much.
The machine is broken. It can't and it won't fix itself and without fixing it is much worse than nothing at all. It simply has to run itself into the ground and something else will then arise to replace it.
Half measures simply are insufficient.
The hilarity of the photo is not just the KFC the group has congregates outside of, apparently booming with business, but the fact that all the other shops are closed at the same time.
Posted by: anon at July 19, 2008 11:10 AMClick on the photo for the story:
Only a short time ago the city of Fallujah served as stronghold for insurgents. Daily skirmishes, improvised explosive device detonations and public unease made operating a business in the city very difficult.
Today, with improved security throughout the region, the low price of 4,000 dinar, or $3.50, will purchase a full meal at the recently established Kentucky Fried Chicken in the Hey Al Dubat area of the city.
The KFC is the first to open for business in the city. Before improved conditions in the city, insurgents threatened business owners, demanding money to support acts of terrorism.
I found one news link to the corresponding photo.. At least some report what goes on inside that place...

Posted by: jim at July 19, 2008 11:29 AMCapitalism is reality-based, so it should triumph in the long run; the problem today is that a lot of people do not realize it is in their own best interests. Al-Qaeda and all other fanatics have ideologies based on fantasy rather than reality, which in practice is nothing more than old-fashioned pre-rule-of-law might-makes-right power politics. Attila and the Witch Doctor are two sides of the same counterfeit coin, as Ayn Rand pointed out.
Posted by: nv53 at July 19, 2008 11:37 AMWatch for a Three Part series on the National;
'KFC, A Sign That Iraqis Are Enjoying A Much Better Life Thanks To Coalition Troops' (no thanks to Chretien and Warren)
Surely no one would long for the good old days. The days of Uday and Qusay roaming around - crash a wedding, rape a Bride.
But, then again, Peter will undoubtingly be able to find some Canadian Sociology Prof only too willing to spin anti-American drivel.
Maybe, just maybe, It will be Iraq that finally gets the Vietnam monkey off America's back. Perhaps this is what has the Latte Left so worried. 'Nam' has been in the Hippies operations manual for four decades now. Losing that part would rip the heart out of the book.
Posted by: ron in kelowna at July 19, 2008 11:50 AMI haven't bought a newspaper in years, and am happy to know that I'm doing my bit to put the Canadian print media out of business.
Why?
Because when I did support Canadian newspapers by subscribing to and buying them, I was constantly disappointed. The stories I was looking for were either not covered or covered so badly, with such lib-left spin and gusto, that I threw most of the news print in the recyle bin without having been enlightened in any way.
Don't get me started on what the newspapers WERE/ARE printing. Pure bumph, for the most part, touting the editor's/publisher's/journalists' own pet projects and/or their friends' un-noteworthy projects. Who the Hell cares about the latest gay fad or the most recent theatrical crap being staged at The Fringe or The Plantageant, for that matter?
If you want reality, check out the blogs. The Canadian MSM is fast making itself irrelevant due to arrogance and pride. It's demise, I believe, is called hubris.
Posted by: batb at July 19, 2008 11:52 AMIf KFC can't succeed in Iraq, nothing can!
For whatever reason, KFC Halal-certified fried chicken is one of the most popular "Western" fast foods amongst Arabs in the Gulf region.
Posted by: JJM at July 19, 2008 11:59 AMI wonder if Obama will drop in for some gladhanding.
Thats porbably the only way the MSM will run this story.
Of course thats the poison pill of Obama going to the region.
If they run clips of him going to places like this the media can't run the usual stories of carnage in the streets.
Oh the horror.
Good to see some peace and normalcy returning there. I wondered how the usual paranoid fanatical muslim haters can claim on the one hand that all muslims are liars and bloodthirsty inhuman killers and yet pretend to care about the safety and welfare of Iraqis. The answer is they don't comment on threads like this and of course they are hypocrits but so are many on the left.

He can stop in for a bite before the "Fried Chicken Free" Democratic Convention.
This is a very serious blow to the Leftard agenda. The proof is in the poutine, couldn't they have opened a Booster Juice? What about those poor chickens, and those poor soon to be fat people, and what about all of that take-out litter?
Look at the bright side leftards, at least I don't see a drive-thru.
Posted by: Indiana Homez at July 19, 2008 4:55 PMNo need for an extra couple of weeks.
We can celebrate today.
The surge worked.
America won!
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says so.
Also says Barack's timetable is where it's at.

How do you Canucks like that?

Posted by: The Seer at July 19, 2008 6:09 PMGeorge Bush is going to be responsible for clogging the arteries of the Iraqis to add to the list of horrors he has inflicted on them.... the loss of their dear leader,Saddam Hussein and now this.....Peter, back to you!
Are you kidding, Obama would drop by for glad handing? The Americanization of Iraq would look just too, too positive for George Bush, evil personified in he Leftist minds. Could there be a Timmies around the corner?
Posted by: Liz J at July 19, 2008 6:10 PMUh oh - The Colonel is indulging in fast-food imperialism ;-)
Posted by: RW at July 19, 2008 6:16 PMOf course Maliki is going to publicly agree with Obama, he knows who is going to be the next POTUS. What actually happens on the ground will continue to be negotiated, and will depend on events, as has been the case for some time.
Posted by: randall g at July 19, 2008 6:19 PMThe chickens they fry should be the terrorist yabbos that flee into the hills when our troops come around!
Posted by: Zilla at July 19, 2008 8:34 PMMisplaced Western guilt is toxic. We even have to feel bad about people wanting to eat fried chicken.
If the West is so bad, why are people always wanting to come here?

Perhaps they have an excess of sea gulls..

Who put the bomp in the bomp-ba-bomp-ba-bomp,
