He is basically calling Medvedev's bluff on cleaning up the Russian legal system. This poor man has suffered enough under the travesty of Putin's Russia. It will be telling to see what happens.

Posted by: penny at July 16, 2008 11:42 PMVitruvius: Your opinion?
Saw a Amory Lovins from Rocky Mountain Institute on Charlie Rose last night. Not my forte, but he seemed to make a lot of sense about energy. Didn't think nuclear would be of much help (would merely substitute for coal in electricity production -- nothing to do with oil crisis), but also that this new drilling off shore, ANWR, etc., would not be economic. Also a pipeline from Alaska would be extremely risky from a security point of view. Seemed to be quite market-oriented in his thinking. Then he mentioned Co2 and climate change -- seemed to believe they were related, which kinda shocked me. He thought US could be zero oil by the 2040s, also thought that lots of technology was available which wasn't being used, out of unimaginative corporate culture, I guess.
Do you know about the cat? Have an opinion?

PARIS — Politicians, feminists and some Muslim leaders here are applauding a court decision to deny citizenship to a Muslim woman from Morocco whose French husband requires her to completely cover her face and body.
The Council of State, the country's highest administrative court, said the woman's acquiescence to the veil showed her failure to assimilate and demonstrated behaviour “incompatible with the essential values of the French community and, notably, the principle of equality of the sexes.”
...
Abdelalai Mamoun, an imam in the suburb where the Moroccan woman lived, told a Paris newspaper that women who voluntarily veil themselves “are rejecting the system” and should emigrate to Muslim countries.
Well, speaking only personally and as the house DJ, Me No Dhimmi, my opinion is that the Bonzo Dog Doo-Da Band's Big Shot is arguably even better than The Intro and the Outro, but I'm not sure if it's really safe for work, so I didn't want to make it a main page SDA LNR show. Nevertheless, if you're interested, it is my opinion that I do think it is notable.

Posted by: Tim at July 17, 2008 1:39 AMHmm. I just ran a few searches on "Carbon Reliance Abatement Program", Doug, and while there are some matches, they all refer back to that same article by Piers Akerman. Perhaps he was speaking tongue-in-cheek. I mean, it would be quite funny if they were really clueless enough to pick CRAP as an acronym, but we would, I think, need a second and preferrably official source before we could conclude that.

Posted by: jcl at July 17, 2008 10:02 AMI recommend very strongly an article by Robert Fulford on B1 of Tuesday's National Post. He is talking about the liberal film critic, the late Pauline Kael of the New Yorker and other publications.
It struck me as I read this piece that the lament of Kael and others that they had let the door open to trash films full of violence and special effects, only judged on box-office receipts, could apply to many other areas undermined by progressives, i.e. marriage.
Kael remarked to a friend,"When we championed trash culture we had no idea it would become the only culutre."
Paul Schrader, a well-known screenwriter, also remarked: "It was fun watching the applecart being upset. But now where do we go for apples?"

As the United Nations mandate that legitimizes the presence of U.S forces in Iraq expires on December 31, 2008, a humanitarian and strategic disaster is coming into view. "Myth of Consensus Explodes: APS Opens Global Warming Debate
The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible."
In a posting to the APS forum, editor Jeffrey Marque explains,"There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution."
The APS is opening its debate with the publication of a paper by Lord Monckton of Brenchley, which concludes that climate sensitivity -- the rate of temperature change a given amount of greenhouse gas will cause -- has been grossly overstated by IPCC modeling. A low sensitivity implies additional atmospheric CO2 will have little effect on global climate.
Larry Gould, Professor of Physics at the University of Hartford and Chairman of the New England Section of the APS, called Monckton's paper an "expose of the IPCC that details numerous exaggerations and "extensive errors""

Vitruvius: It was OK not to know who Amory Lovins is. We don't expect you to know EVERYTHING or think your sagacity is limitless.
Sorry if I misunderstood the protocol. I thought mine was a reader's tip (of a sort) and didn't realize your contribution was restricted to DJ-ing, which evidently it isn't in view of a response to another poster about CRAP. Moreoever, in view of your engineering background, your earlier much-appreciated comments on climate change, and your oft-expressed fondness for Charlie Rose, I was curious to get your take.
Posted by: Me No Dhimmi at July 17, 2008 1:21 PM(Via Dr. Andrew Bostom) Barry Rubin, Mr. Obama, Meet Mr. Jihadi
While Obama poses as the great cosmopolitan there is something very much in common between his statement on the September 11 terrorists and what he has to say on the rural and small town Americans, who he believes are attracted to their views only through low living standards, ignorance, and the follies of religion.
No one can think in a manner different from him. No one can hold another belief system and act on it. They are merely evincing, to use the Marxist term for it, false consciousness. He will educate them both directly by material goods and by proper information.
Ironically, this is the epitome of imperialist thinking...
There is no protocol, Me No Dhimmi, yet after looking up Amory Lovins I figured that another Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band tune would be a better use of resources than discussing Lovins's bloviating. An attempt at danming by ignoring, if you like, though of course that sort of subtle shtick is difficult to carry off in blog comments.

"THE EU'S CARBON TRADING SCHEME
Killing Jobs to Save the Climate
The price of European emission permits is rising so rapidly that German companies are threatening to leave the country. Thousands of jobs could be lost. And the environment may, in the end, be no better off.
They sat silently through two lectures, but then they couldn't control their anger any longer. The civil servants from the Environment Ministry, the Environment Agency and the German Emissions Trading Authority made it sound easy for industry to take up carbon trading. It was just too much for the managers to tolerate.
"If that's the shape the trading will take, we will simply move our cement operation to Ukraine," a cement factory manager shouted into the lecture hall. "Then there won't be any trading here, nothing will be produced here anymore -- the lights will simply go out here."
The businessmen's anger surprised the emissions-allowance trading experts."

"Never forget
By Lee Edwards
Thursday, July 17, 2008
Nearly two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe, five nations remain "captive" to communism -- China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam and Laos.
Amid all the hoopla about the Beijing Olympics and the "ohs" and "ahs" over the dozens of skyscrapers soaring above the Chinese capital, we must keep in mind that China is also a land of forced labor camps. These camps constitute a Chinese Gulag -- the laogai -- filled with an estimated 4 million to 6 million prisoners, including tens of thousands whose only crime was to criticize publicly the communist regime.
These are inconvenient facts for those who want to do business with Communist China, but the truth about communism must be told.
Our Jewish brothers and sisters understand what is at stake. They understand that history must not be forgotten lest it be repeated. They keep reminding the world of the Holocaust, crying, "Never again." So too must we remember the crimes and the victims of communism.
"Nearly two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe, five nations remain "captive" to communism -- China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam and Laos. ...."
"The failure to separate fact from fiction, and myth from reality, when it comes to communism explains, in part, why it persists in Cuba, where the regime silences any opposition; in North Korea, where the people endure a totalitarian nightmare; in Laos and Vietnam, where the most elementary human rights are denied; and in China, whose leaders still pretend pro-democracy students weren't massacred in Tiananmen Square in June 1989. What is the truth about communism? That it failed to deliver on every one of its promises from the beginning.
It promised bread but produced chronic food shortages and rationing.
It pledged peace but sacrificed young men in wars in far-off lands.
It guaranteed the peasants land but delivered them into collectives.
Wherever they came to power, communists killed."

Posted by: RW at July 17, 2008 6:56 PMAPS Physics has an excellent debunking of global warming complete with yummy graphs showing declining temperatures in the period 1998-2008.
"Some reasons why the IPCC’s estimates may be excessive and unsafe are explained. More importantly, the conclusion is that, perhaps, there is no “climate crisis”, and that currently-fashionable efforts by governments to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions are pointless, may be ill-conceived, and could even be harmful."
