Flashback June 27: CTV - "For the first time in modern history, the North Pole may be iceless this summer...."

Here's a comparison of arctic ice now and a year ago:

http://igloo.atmos.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/test/print.sh?fm=07&fd=16&fy=2007&sm=07&sd=16&sy=2008

It's obvious that there's far more ice this year than last, which makes that June 27 headline rather bizarre.

By the way, the polar ice stops melting in about a month, so there's not much time to get the north pole ice free.

Posted by: rabbit at July 17, 2008 3:16 PM

This can't be true ;-) I just read where some idiot kayaker is going to paddle to the north pole to show the world that it's melting. He is obviously being escorted by a support boat that probably does not spew out a carbon footprint.

I personally fear that the inmates have taken over the asylum.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at July 17, 2008 3:23 PM

Did you notice who was credited with writing the CTV story?

CTV.ca News Staff

Yeah, I wouldn't want my name put on that fantasy piece either.

Is there a way to get CTV to re-open the comments section to shove the "told you so!" back in their face?

the end of the Hysteria is near

THIS IS A HUGE STORY

THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY HAS REVERSED ITSELF ON GLOBAL WARMING!

Posted by: in the know at July 17, 2008 3:39 PM

Talk about scary! Some critics are saying "For the first time in modern history, CTV might be viewerless, and therefore sponsorless for scaremongering and advancing pseudoscience..."

Posted by: Shaken at July 17, 2008 3:39 PM

The only thing melting is the success of their "fear-mongering" (I love that phrase)

But what do I know. Just a guy in Alberta, still wearing a jacket, on July 17, 2008.

Posted by: Sounder at July 17, 2008 4:04 PM

It was 4C at the airport here in Edmonton this morning.

Posted by: molarmauler at July 17, 2008 4:06 PM

Yes, the polar ice caps have disappeared. They're buried under mountains of snow!

Posted by: grok at July 17, 2008 4:17 PM

"in the know" I think global warming is a scam, but I have to correct the claim in your post that the American Physical Society has reversed itself on global warming.

Sound the alarm, call Scotland Yard, the sky is falling, the sea levels are rising.

Buy Catepillar stock as we will be diking till the cows come home!!

We need some heavy duty earth mooooving equipment for those 20 foot rising sea levels. Ark building is finding new adherents. An explosion of carpentry, boat building, and surfboards will take place due to millions of square kilometers of new beach frontage being created. Florida becomes a snorkeling destination, California is encroached by sea lions.

Inuit land values triple as the Artic becomes a holiday resort destination.

Get prepared for a Dutch invasion as millions flee the Netherlands due to their devastating UEFA loss on the fields of green.

Dutch Gouda cheese futures should go stratospheric, buy now, buy today, buy often!!

Why let your farms "go under" when you can drown your sorrows with BECKS, STELLA ARTOIS, or a ST PAULI GIRL!

CTV (Globemedia) is the mirror image of CBC - leftist propaganda, - full bore.

At least I am not taxed (that I am aware of) to keep them afloat, - a small consolation.

For the first time in history! Ice free! Hmmm, I had a recollection of reading "Weekly Reader" in Grade 6 about 45 years ago... and seeing pictures of US nuclear submarines at the North Pole with very little ice. See the photos of Seadragon and Skate at the North Pole in August 1962. History seems to be getting shorter instead of longer!

The American Physical Society, having reversed itself on Global Warming, should mean the end is near for Big Al and Kooky Suzuki and their ilk.
They'll be running for cover to beat the shit and fan syndrome.

Posted by: Liz J at July 17, 2008 4:51 PM

So I guess this means the Polar Bears are safe now ?

I better get outside and tell the two Greenpeacer's who are shilling for money on the street corner that their gig is up.

Time to take your tin cup and tootle on home.

Posted by: Fred at July 17, 2008 4:54 PM

Oh, for the love of God!

The disinformation that these inglorious and vile "zeitgeist" engineers, manipulators and profiteers use to shock our sensibilities seems to get more and more outrageous the more that cooler heads prevail and apply reason to expose their dogma and motives.

Global warming really needs a girlfriend.

Posted by: Mr. X. at July 17, 2008 4:56 PM

Photos like these are the path to a slippery slope regarding AGW. I suppose they can say that global warming is causing global cooling, or did they say that already.

Posted by: Indiana Homez at July 17, 2008 4:58 PM

Well, I'll release a sotto voce sigh of relief. Polar bears are gorgeous and deadly. One doesn't want to see the last of them. One would prefer Al Gore and several of his groupthink minions were riding the melting iceberg to oblivion.

Posted by: iowavette at July 17, 2008 4:59 PM

The CTV story is technically correct, since for liberals "history" begins at 6:00 AM each morning.

Posted by: DrD at July 17, 2008 5:03 PM

Texas Canuck: "I just read where some idiot kayaker is going to paddle to the north pole to show the world that it's melting."

I didn't hear about the kayaker, but this composer in residence at Winnipeg Symphony is up there trying to get inspired to put global warming to music. I heard on the radio yesterday that his icebreaker got stuck!

The American Physical Society is part of the loop of GW believers. Whether it's reversed itself on the Global Warming Scam/Sham it must surely be informed enough to be looking at the effect of Volcanic eruptions under the Arctic ice. This would have nothing whatever to do with human activity.

The next project will be to stop all seismic activity.

Posted by: Liz J at July 17, 2008 5:21 PM

Looks like Kayak Boy is going to be -walking- to the pole with a boat on his back. Typical Brit greenie.

Posted by: Mississauga Matt at July 17, 2008 5:40 PM

IT'S SETTLED, Big Al Gore has just appeared on TV announcing the ice will all be melted in the Arctic in FIVE years. At last another market for refrigerators.

Posted by: Liz J at July 17, 2008 6:03 PM

Crap. I really want the ice cap to melt.

Warmer temperatures have ALWAYS meant good things for the human species, like the colonization of Greenland. Whereas cooling (such as the mini ice age 1300-1500ish) have always been very bad.

Imagine cropland from Southern Ontario to Arviat NWT! Bring on global warming!!!

They just don't make Apocalypses like they used to.

Oh what a terrible tragedy; global warming has been canceled due to benign stasis in the environment.

Gee, the tax fraud artists will have to come up with a new justification for shamelessly reaching into your pocket and STEALING YOUR MONEY!!

TJ, if you follow the links within the link to the story about the APS changing their tune on AGW, you will find that the editor of the APS website or blog or whatever has announced that there IS significant dispute within the scientific community and that the science should NOT be considered closed. This was by way of an introduction to a paper by a British researcher who is debunking AGW.

The link to the main story is above, but I found it through yargb.blogspot.com. It seems to be legitimate on their part. They haven't totally swung over to denier status, but they are moving from "incontrovertible" to "science is open"...a good first step.

The enviroMENTAList must be fuming - whether its a picnic, a drive in the country or an apocalypse - nobody likes it when the weather doesn't turn out the way you want it to.

Then there are other people who just don't like to be proven wrong no matter what - you know the sort. The kind that would gladly loose a war - just for argument sake, like the one in Afghanistan, just so's they can say 'I was just SO so so right - you knew I was so right!- the whole frikkin world knows I'm right. But you.....you just had to have your McBloodbath didn't you ? DIDN'T YOU!!? Mr McChimpeyBushHitler. I hope you and the republican err..conservative hate machine are proud.' Well you get the picture...

And as you already know Trucman when the ice melts in your rye it doesn't overflow, don't tell Kookie and Fat Albert, they still think melting ice causes higher sea levels but still the liar Suckookie won't sell his oceanside mansions for ten cents on the dollar.

Posted by: bartinsky at July 17, 2008 9:47 PM

How bad are the lift lines?

Mr. GreenNeck, no offense intended earlier, but I put a link up at the earlier thread that defines my point precisely, if you're curious. Teaser:

"If economic activity in the U.S. and other OECD nations slows down, leading to less demand for oil, it doesn't matter, as long as demand in China continues to grow at its absolute number of 500 thousand barrels a day. The fact that a 2% contraction in oil demand by the OECD would be twice China's absolute growth is not given any weight by the market."

Posted by: Porter at July 17, 2008 10:40 PM

The dude with the kayak reminds me of an old joke involving a Ukrainian going ice fishing but it took him all day to chop a hole in the ice big enough for the boat.....

I hope a polar bear eats the kayak dude.

Think nice warm thoughts while you freeze your ass off again this coming winter. Can anyone give me the downside of a little global warming in one of the coldest countries in the world ? Can't think of one. For a long time I thought that a rise in the Ocean level might drown all the foam at the mouth treehuggers in Vancouver, but sadly even that theory turned out to be bullshit.Wonder what the next great panic will be? I've already had global cooling, planet wide starvation, hole in the ozone, sars, y2000,mad cow and bird flu. All predicted by the "experts". The entertainment just never ends.

Posted by: peterj at July 18, 2008 2:14 AM

Might this person be following an icebreaker with a camera crew? Possibly helicoptered-in to specific locations for "great newsworthy visuals" of polar bears drowning and protesting penguins?

I think the leftard set better damn well hope there is global warming as the amount of output in our croplands will diminish if it gets colder. Given that the leftards have made us burn food, that leaves not a lot left for poor people to eat.

Cold + envirotards = Starving third-world peasants.

Envirotards - DDT = dead Africans, Asians, and South Americans.

I've made my complaint to the crtc over this, the text of which is below. I invite the denizens of SDA to follow my lead and make CTV squirm. If you are going to publish it, it has to be true. If not, then you need to apologize:

"Recently CTV pulished a story stating that there would be no ice at the North Pole this year. This was also published to their website at http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080627/iceless_north_080627/20080627?hub=CTVNewsAt11. This story has since been proven to be false. In effect, CTV published what amounted to speculation as "NEWS". As such they MUST be ordered to appologize to canadians for their assumtions, a) on the CTV National News, and b)for an unlimited time on their website. They purport to be a news organization, not an advocacy, therefore should act as such. Speculative stories must by definition have an equal follow-up. I refer you to http://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/satellite-imagery-shows-artic-ice-still-unmelted/ for proof that the CTV story was in error. This story was never "news" it was environmental propoganda and should have been branded as such in the original story. A full retraction is REQUIRED. A full disclosure of sources should also be part of the apology so that Canadians will know who, in future to ignore!"

Posted by: Bart at July 18, 2008 6:24 PM

did the ice not grow from about 3 million kms to about 10 million kms by about june of this year.
