Seriously, if I ever showed that level of disrespect at school, my hands would have gotten the up-close and personal treatment from the vice-principal's beaver tail he kept in the top drawer of his desk (and how do I know that?). Then there'd be the leather belt waiting at home afterwards. Back then there were real consequences for stupidity.

There's something rotten in today's youth that can't be fixed by patronizing them with fake grades. It'll continue to get worse unless the kids are made to face their problems head on. Pretending doesn't work, getting real does.

Whenever one imagines that they have discovered the very lowest -- or highest? -- degree of stupidity that can be attained by sentient beings, one need only gaze across the Atlantic to remind themselves that there is no fixed point beyond which further stupidity is impossible.

For some reason this brings to mind the question I always get in job interviews: Are you a "team player?"

A good team player wouldn't tell Peter Buckroyd he's out of his frackin' mind. A good team player wouldn't remind him that one of the jobs in education is to teach children that anti-social behavior leads to a hard and unpleasant life, therefore swearing on an exam should not be rewarded except by swift punishment.

A good team player will get an obscenely wrong instruction like that and say "Yes sir, of course sir, makes perfect sense sir!" and play on as if nothing whatever was amiss.

So when they ask me "Are you a team player?" I usually say "No." Life's too short to be working someplace where they expect you to leave your brain at home.

The esteemed hief examiner has forgotten an important item. Language isn't just words valued in themselves for their correct spelling. Language has a singular function, its ability to communicate meaning.

A common structure of this meaningful communication is the question and answer. The words used must express some relevant relation between these two poles.

Presumably, that exam posed a question. The answer must refer to the meaning in the question and provide some relevant response. That is, as I understand it, one of the axioms of both communication and education.

I wonder if her Majesty's Revenue Department would, if it asked some citizen a question about the content of their tax form, accept an answer detailing a recipe for chicken soup.

Unfortunately it also occurs to me that a normal child trapped in that school system may find a blank sheet with the words f-off carefully written in the exact center to be the best possible response. That would be considered another victory for PC education, no doubt.

This reminds me of an incident at a school--probably not far from you!--where the children were involved in a recreational writing activity, devised by a parents' group. The activity was based on The Simpsons so the kids' written responses were from that perspective. In that vein, quite creatively dealing with the task set, a student wrote a "homophobic" statement. One teacher assessing the responses gave an automatic failing grade "because homophobic statements are NOT allowed, no matter what." I'd have given the response a more than passing grade because the student, in the voice expected, answered the question most competently.

The politically correct idiots in charge of public (and even a lot of private) education are taking us nowhere any sane and principled person would want to go. As I said, God help us.

is stupid a four letter word?

I've seen it go from one extreme to the other. In junior high one of my classmates was given a 0 for writing the letters "G.D." on an essay. that was in 1968. In 1970 I had a young teacher who didn't grade on grammar, spelling, or structure. It was suddenly all about substance and imagination.

Personally I think the latter coaxed more budding writers out of the closet than the old stuffy ideas from the 50's. But there has to be a limit. Filthy language might be suitable in the right context, but isn't necessary for every single essay.
