Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

“You can't say those words. Those words are illegal."
Christie Blatchford is talking on her wireless to Rosie DiManno at an Air Canada gate at the Ottawa airport while waiting to board her flight:

It was at that point that the Air Canada clerk at Gate 27 approached me.

“Excuse me,” he said, “you can't say those words. Those words are illegal.”

“What words?” I asked, bewildered, given that by then I'd said probably 2,000 words.

“Suicide bombing,” he whispered.

That's indeed a great column DB. Christie Blatchford has always been a no-nonsense kind of columnist. Her point that being young and incompetent doesn't make them any less dangerous is well taken. Even if their plot had been a glorious failure, one heck of a lot of people would have died for the sake of it.

I admire Christie Blanchford... she, almost exclusively so, is worth reading in the Globe and Mail.

Posted by: marc in calgary at June 27, 2008 11:54 PM

That is indeed an excellent essay by Christie Blatchford (or "Blatch", as she likes to call herself). I will note for the record that Rex Murphy is the one other columnist at the Globe and Mail worth reading and thinking about.

I greatly admire Ms. Blatchford. Mrs. DB and I also travel frequently, flying more than 100,000 miles annually to maintain the top elite tier on our airline of choice (when we're not living in our parents' basement, as some on the left would have it) and regret only that she got caught up in the excessive stupidity of the dog-and-pony show that passes for airport security.

there's trouble brewing in russel township ontario
it's a french/english thing and howard galganov (ex-montreal language rights warrior) has been mixing it up over some municipal sign laws.

background: http://www.galganov.com/editorials.asp?ID=1003

in any case - there's a rumour floating around that a complaint has been made to an hrc about "hate crime" concerning the distribution of 6000 flyers asking people who disagree with the municipal "mandatory bilinguism" to boycott French-owned stores. this should provoke more lively debate with a twist as we see a politically and legally experienced individual possibly lock horns with the people you gotta love to hate.

the complaint may be coming from a group called French Quebeckers against Canadian francophobia. this will probably be as not very funny as what's happening to guy earle in vancouver. i'll try to keep up on this one.

Martian soil 'could support life'
Analysis of the soil has surprised and delighted Nasa scientists

Martian soil appears to contain sufficient nutrients to support life - or, at least, asparagus - Nasa scientists believe.

Preliminary analysis by the $420m (£210m) Phoenix Mars Lander mission on the planet's soil found it to be much more alkaline than expected.

Scientists working on the spacecraft project said they were "flabbergasted" by the discovery.

The find has raised hopes conditions on Mars may be favourable for life.

"We basically have found what appears to be the requirements, the nutrients, to support life, whether past, present or future," said Sam Kounaves, the project's lead chemist, from the University of Arizona.

Exciting data

Although he said further tests would have to be conducted, Mr Kounaves said the soil seemed "very friendly… there is nothing about it that is toxic," he said.

"It is the type of soil you would probably have in your back yard - you know, alkaline. You might be able to grow asparagus in it really well."

As well as being far less acidic than anticipated, the soil was also found to contain traces of magnesium, sodium, potassium and other elements.

"We were all flabbergasted at the data we got back," said Mr Kounaves. "It is very exciting for us."

Fred Thompson sent me a heads-up email.

** As conservatives, it is our job to ensure that these principles are maintained and preserved for future generations. But increasingly these values are under assault. In foreign affairs, our political opponents ignore our progress in Iraq and want to return America to isolationism. Economically, they call for dramatic tax hikes and increased government spending. Judicially, they support activist judges who strive to make the law rather than interpret it.

[Sounds like Canada, even like the HRCs]

We recently saw the results of this last point with the Supreme Court ruling in Boumediene v. Bush. By a one-person majority, the court determined that the existing rules governing detainees -- the most generous ever afforded by a nation to non-citizens -- were insufficient. Instead, it substituted the judgment of the court for the accumulated wisdom of elected officials to produce a decision that makes America less safe. **

I have heard and read various news reports about the Unity rally that Barack and the Clintons will hold to show their closing ranks to get a Democrat in the White House (by the way, isn't Hillary still a candidate since she just suspended for the moment her campaign as I understand in case something happens to Barack).

Everyone is reporting this without mentioning that Obama said he has asked his finance team to look into giving at least $10 million to the Clintons to help pay off their debt. This buys a lot of unity. Also do the Obama donors know and have okayed this switch of their money?

"She said the Ontario Human Rights Code SUPERSEDES all other legislation, unless there is a specific exemption to exclude it written into a law."

I'm not sure of the exact legal niceties, but unfortunately the Supreme Court has said as much as that the Human Rights Code has some kind of priority over other legislation, perhaps "quasi-constitutional".
