Tim Russert Dead

Of an apparent heart attack.
(Update: link now indicates cause of death was "sudden coronary thrombosis".)

Wow, what a shock! My prayers to his loved ones and family.

This man was one of the few professionals left, a journalist who exhibited toughness but fairness, a quality so very lacking today. God speed and Rest in Peace Tim Russert.

Posted by: Sounder at June 13, 2008 5:13 PM

One of the few good ones.

"OH NO!" My first reaction on seeing the headline, Tim Russert Dead.

What a fine guy and conumate reporter and interviewer. Also, a compassionate, commons sense, and sensitive man--but no too sensitive. A man, also, of faith, which he wasn't ashamed to talk about when it came up.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his wife and son, and especially to his dad, Big Russ. This will be a heartbreak for him; they were very close; Tim's father was the subject of a wonderful book he wrote, which paid tribute to his father's hard work and stoicism while Tim was growing up--basically, poor in Buffalo.

What a loss. Tim Russert embodied journalistic integrity. He will be sorely missed. Dying at 58 isn't quite a tragedy--but almost.

RIP, Tim Russert. Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord. And may light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Very sad - death is so evil.

Posted by: don muntean at June 13, 2008 5:49 PM

One of the few sane MSM reporters. Sad.

Yet Olberman lives to spew his poison.

Posted by: Doug at June 13, 2008 5:56 PM

Truly a sad day.

We have lost a reasoned voice, a man who knew how to bring out the truth, without malice.

There is no one else like him, and it is heart-warming to hear how respected and loved he was, from all quarters.

Condolences to his family and friends.

And every parent's nightmare, outliving your child, comes true for Big Russ just before Father's Day.

Although it's not all that important at a time like this, it's being noted that his Democratic roots rarely seeped through and he was willing to politely ask politicians of all stripes tough questions.

I like many others always looked forward to his well-prepared interviews and I'll miss them. He came across as a thoroughly decent human being, as many whose paths crossed with his are confirming today.

Sad indeed. How he lost his Buffalo accent I'll never know.

It is a loss for American Television journalism. As others have said he was one of the better ones and always struck me as fair and reasonable.

58....wow, sure makes you think, being early 40's myself.

Tim Russert Dead:

Not from my point of view. Now his new beat really includes the center of power.

My condolences to the Family. He lived well.

God bless Tim Russert. I don't watch TV news but I knew about Tim: one in a million, I think. I feel very sad, but, like Revnant Dream and batb, I know he's not really gone.

I shouldn't even think it, but there are a few MSM bigwigs I'd not have felt so badly about, if I'd heard of their demise. "God works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform."

"Rest eternal grant unto Tim, O Lord. And may light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen."

Stephen :

I had one when I was 45. Any Male on here should get there blood pressure checked as well as tests done. Like an ECG. You could head off a universe of problems & pills. It takes maybe 45 minites but could save your life , not even metionong your families well being.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at June 13, 2008 7:31 PM

Sad. That's young. He seemed like a decent guy. The way MSNBC is going the obvious replacement would be Michael Moore.

Posted by: penny at June 13, 2008 7:36 PM

Trade him for Wk, or SB, or RW,...et al...

Posted by: eastern paul at June 14, 2008 3:03 AM

That's a shame, Russert was one of the very few pundits I actually respected and enjoyed.

With all due respect….Boo Frickity Hoo.

He was exceedingly average at his craft. He was a disgusting fat body. He would posit searing, incisive, germane and relevant questions, and then let the democrat slide with no follow up question after the usual obtuse answer. He was an unabashed Liberal hack. He was an average author, and I’m being kind.

God bless him and his family but sheesh, enough with the “how we are going to miss” him crap. He just wasn’t that noteworthy.

Rush Limbaugh gave a well reasoned statement on the death of Tim Russert.

He will likely not be replaced by a like journalist. One going against the general bias of his "friends".

Too soon and very sad.

Thank you KPD for the balanced look to this site from the airhead left.

I know my comments are probably a little harsh, but the syrup pouring out from everybody is giving me a diabetic stroke. If I hear the term "thoughts and prayers" one more time im a gonna puke.

I know that all kinds of people are sorrowful but schucks, can we save it all for someone a litle more...consequential?

This guy is getting more coverage than Reagan! If we are going to mourn for something, how about the death of the conservative movement in America?

KPD said: "He was exceedingly average at his craft. He was a disgusting fat body. He would posit searing, incisive, germane and relevant questions, and then let the democrat slide with no follow up question after the usual obtuse answer."

A couple of things come to mind with these comments.

First, to get at the obligatory smack for his size.

One might ask why that is a factor at all to his ability as a political pundit or host.

In some of the conversations today, what jumped out was who the key person was, to push the network honchos to hire him.

That person saw through his body size, through the media's need to have hosts and reporters, with the 'correct'look.

It is poignant, that he came out as the most respected, most honored, most remembered in ways that the 'correct body types' may never achieve.

Perhaps because of his look, people were drawn to the man's skillful execution of his craft.

I agree that NBC is spending a lot of time remembering, trying to find their place with him gone.

Frankly, they can struggle away at it, for likely, there is no one, in place now, that will engender that kind of public respect, that came to him from both sides of the political spectrum.

They can ask if they put too much on him, to carry their network, even if he himself, seemed driven to work.

Secondly, one may suggest that he let the Dems slide with their answers.

I suggest that the public heard the difficult questions, appreciated that they were *not* being left out, and could draw their own conclusions on how it was answered.

Russert knew the strength of the right question, at the right time, very well.

Sometimes, one does not need a come back to make a point stronger.

KPD,
I agree that the coverage is over the top.. but in comparison to today’s Talking Heads, Russert was the best of NBC. He was a people person, a decent individual. It was never difficult working with/for Russert. He was a blast of a past generation of gentlemen.

He was a Compulsive Professional, but he was not a mover & shaker.. He never made "real" waves.
He followed the pack...

He may not deserve all the Hype, by the less worthy (NBC has lots of A-holes), but he does not deserve criticism of how he choose to live his life.

(What's next...Hard Ball & Meet the Press)

Rest in peace Tim Russert.. Sir

I sat we draft the Great One, Mark Levin, to host the new and improved Meet the Press.

I would definitely tune in for that!
