We Are All Treaty People

They were carelessly fishing on the target range;

Police have released the name of a man charged with careless use of a firearm after three men were shot at while fishing last month.

RCMP said Monday that Victor Nanatakapo, 55, from the Big River area, is charged in connection with the incident.

On May 18, a father, son and grandfather said they were fishing on Delaronde Lake, 190 kilometres north of Saskatoon, when a shot rang out, and a bullet splashed into the water near them. They said a man standing on a nearby hill yelled, "Get the hell off my lake."

If people just had the sense to restrict their fishing to places like schoolyards where guns are prohibited, these accidents wouldn't happen.

And cue the digressive rants against First Nations groups...

Posted by: QE at June 10, 2008 8:17 PM

Maybe Harper can add this trespassing to tomorrow's apology.

Posted by: wallyj at June 10, 2008 8:28 PM

They should send the Saskatoon RCMP up to Caledon, Ontario. Seeing as the OPP are incapable of arresting criminals.

Posted by: Sarnia Jim at June 10, 2008 8:35 PM

"Nanatakapo's next court date is Oct. 6 in Big River."

Why does it take so long? Long delays in the resolution of legal matters enfeeble the justice system and reduce peoples trust in it.

"And cue the digressive rants against First Nations groups..."

I would too, if I was shot at. Though, I've been threatened with a "visit" from the Indian Posse. Does that count?

Posted by: Kate at June 10, 2008 9:00 PM

If he'd hit them would he be charged with careful use?

Posted by: Draind Brain at June 10, 2008 9:14 PM

Kate I'd be willing to bet if you were shot at then you'd shoot back! What was the nature of the "visit" you received? If'n you don't mind my askin

Posted by: kelly at June 10, 2008 10:08 PM

"First" Nations are in South America. Our Indians stole their land and forced them to move south. Without an apology.

Posted by: Mississauga Matt at June 10, 2008 10:11 PM

navigation is a common law right, unless the lake is surrounded by private property and has no navigable inlet or outlet, the lake is public.

Using a gun this way, throw him in jail for a bit and lots of community service.

Posted by: Colin at June 10, 2008 10:23 PM

With the Lieberals gun registry and licencing system, first nations are exempt. So they won't even be able to take his gun away. No matter how many people he shot at.

Unlike the rest of us who can be denied a gun licence if we don't knuckle under to the dictators in Ottawa.

Posted by: Mike T at June 10, 2008 10:27 PM

Kate
make a formal complaint, that way the police have to act, also they require approx. 3 threats to your life before issuing a "Authorization to Carry"

The more complaints against the Indian posse more likely they will act to shut it down. This would be good for us and all the decent folks that live on Reserves.

Posted by: Colin at June 10, 2008 10:29 PM

QE, what do you mean by "digressive rants"? IE: I digress, here's a rant against FNs, becasue they have nothing to do with this story.?
How about a rant against the political correct and exploitive industry that has entenched the social and economic gulf between FN people and mainstream Canada; and this is not a digressive rant, it is bang on!

Posted by: Bushman at June 10, 2008 11:21 PM

Good on him - I'd be pissed off too if some 'whiteys' were cruising my lake in a canoe with their IPods buggering up my peace. This is Red Taliban country.

Posted by: Darcey at June 10, 2008 11:23 PM

What? He's a good shot ... if he meant to kilt them they would be kilt. He's tolerant.

Buddy of mine still calls a Vietnamesse restaurant at Spadina and Kensington in Chinatown Toronto - "Get Off My Land Restaurant", after two drunk Indian bums treid to pick a fight with us.

The staff made them pay before they got their meals because they knew the dinning experience would, most likely end badly.
Sure enough one pissypanted drooling "noble savage" came over to our table to tell us to "Get Off My Land.
We were the only white guys in the room of 30.
I stood up and three 5 foot tall cooks came flying out the kitchen door yelling excitedly, and bum rushed them out the door that the women staff were holding open.
They had to leave the front door locked for 15 minutes before the "noble savages" quit making hand gestures exposing their asses and screaming profanity at the window on Spadina.
They didn't even touch their meals, and the appologetic waitress gave us 2 free beers to wash down our excellent meal.

Multiculturalism ROCKS!

That's why I always bring a rifle when I go fishing!!

Posted by: Lone Ranger at June 10, 2008 11:56 PM

"I would too, if I was shot at."

I've no doubt of that. The only thing is, while most people would (quite reasonably) heap scorn on Mr. Nanatakapo, you and yours aren't content unless you can tar entire groups of people with the same brush.

A question, my dear Kate: given how distasteful you find "progressives'" Trudeaupian-inspired recognition of group-based identities, why do you allow yourself to see the world through those same identity filters? Shouldn't you see Mr. Nakatakapo, and only Mr. Nakatakapo?

Oh right, groups only 'exist' when you want to complain about them.

Posted by: QE at June 11, 2008 12:00 AM

To be entirely fair I've also been told with longshoreman profanity by some "A"hole Toronto yuppies to "Get off my lake" in a small bay off Georgian Bay.
We were fishing with my friends 5 year old son at the time from his bass boat.
Thankfully Toronto yuppies don't like guns.

pass out.

QE, please highlight the portion where Kate indicated that a 'group' (FN's, I assume) were the perpetrators rather than the individual.

Could it be the title? Is that what you're referring to? I really don't understand the blanks that you're mind has filled in with this perceived injustice.

Talk about filters . . . .

Cheers,
lance

...there's no fish down there.

'is that you Lord?'

Posted by: tomax7 at June 11, 2008 4:22 AM

First off, let me preface this by saying that I am 1/8th Miqmaq.

I am from the "we conquered your ass, therefore it is mine" school of thought.

So, in the spirit of generosity, let's just even things out and say that we all own the lakes, not the conquerers nor the vanquished.

Posted by: kingstonlad at June 11, 2008 5:32 AM

Well, kingstonlad, if you're 1/8 Miqmaq you qualify for Indian status and do not have to pay taxes.
As you go about in Kingston do you feel a twinge of ownership of the land it was built on?

This apology from the PM on our behalf is only the beginning. Expect more and more demands, especially for money, the only balm to cure all hurts, mere words just won't be enough.

Some Liberals have been criticizing the PM for not allowing the Indian Heads to have some INPUT into the apology. Well, HELLO! Whose making the apology? Stupid, desperate dunderheads.

Posted by: Liz J at June 11, 2008 8:58 AM

QE - the same thing (shooting at vehicles rather than boats) has happened twice in the last 10 years at the reserve near where I grew up. This is anecdotal, true, but there's more evidence of aboriginal abuse of firearms than there is of multinational troops misbehaving in Iraq. The stories don't get covered because "nobody got hurt" and because individually they mean little. The trend, however, shows a problem.

Posted by: C_Miner at June 11, 2008 10:31 AM

Indians are above the law...as can be seen in Caledonia, reserves around Cornwall and anywhere else they use violence to get their way....there will be a day of reckoning coming some and a lot of innocent white fold will be hurt...

Posted by: Billy B. at June 11, 2008 10:48 AM

Shooters on reserves? Naw...couldn't be. He must have been just practicing. Like the freaks who shoot at airplanes landing in places like Island Lake or Pukatawagan or Norway House or Pikangikum.

And as soon as someone reports it there's a progressive tool ready to chime in with a racism accusation.

I got news for ya ... this sh!t happens a lot more than it gets reported and the reason is that the shooters are freaks and haters. Volunteers and not victims.

Posted by: OMMAG at June 11, 2008 11:41 AM

fools like QE have encouraged the 'groups' thinking that inspires fools like Mr Nanetekapo.

Posted by: Bushman at June 11, 2008 12:59 PM

natives behaving badly, oh my, who wudda thunk it.

once that nasty PMSH makes the apology for the years of lieberal schools all will be right with the world. any chance that bernier or coulliard are 1/8 indian. that would certainly keep the msm off the case.

Posted by: cal2 at June 11, 2008 1:14 PM

QE says: "And cue the digressive rants against First Nations groups..."

M'kay.

In other "Get off my lake!" news, developers (guys who build stuff) in Cayuga have just been granted an injunction barring the Hadenosaunee Six Nations, AKA the Mohawk Warrior Cigarette Smuggling Society, from "demonstrating" at their job sites.

This is where bandanna wearing thugs threaten the workers, block traffic, STEAL, and generally disrupt the job site in any way they can. With the active, and I do mean -actuve- help and support of the OPP. As in, the OPP have been captured on video helping these scum put up fencing across the driveway of a job site in Hagersville while guys were trying to get their trucks and equipment out.

Be it noted, there's around 25,000 people living on the rez at Oshweken, maybe 20-30 a-holes ever show up at these "demonstrations".

By the way, QE. With your vast knowledge and wealth of experience in the crime/self defense realm, maybe you could answer me this. Do you think this person who has been charged with "careless" use of a firearm would be quite so "careless" next time if the boaters had been empowered by our no-sparrow-shall-fall, nanny-knows-best government to RETURN FIRE on him?

Because I can tell you from personal experience, there's something about a rifle bullet breaking the sound barrier over your head that makes you just not want to be there anymore.

Posted by: The Phantom at June 11, 2008 4:07 PM

You can fish in Toronto now because guns are banned there, David Miller said so.

Posted by: clair voyant at June 11, 2008 4:28 PM

Yeah Clair, but can you eat what you catch?

Posted by: The Phantom at June 11, 2008 8:48 PM

I am sorry to say that I writhed when I watch the television tonight on the apology. Then dear old Craig Oliver mentioned about his friendship with an aboriginal person.

I simply cannot help my inner feelings. I felt it was a bit of a put on by the apologists. "They din do it,mister- din do nuffin". I got treated nearly as bad in England as a child. I have got over it.

One thing I must recount is of a tragic case just north of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. This about ten years ago. Two kids were fishing on the far side of a lake. A friend of the family, a grown man, started firing shots well in front of the kids from the other side.

A bullet sped off the water and killed a ten year old boy. The OPP carried out tests for the court case. They confirmed that bullets could skip off the water.

I think he got seven years durance.

sorey kate double post my bad

Posted by: royalist at June 12, 2008 12:20 AM

Now that's funny.

QE seems to have missed the fact the whole purpose of multiculturalism as preached by the Trudeau wackos, was to for individuals to stereotype themselves as the ethnic tribe they belong to.

These anti-social people do not believe in joining with the rest of society as one big happy family, but prefer to live off on an cultural island (some would call them ghettos) by themselves.
And no intruders, or fishermen, allowed.

Pierre Trudeau was easily the most socially regressive PM this country will ever have.

But then he and his followers (and how is Senator Joyal today?) all suffered from a medical condition.

Their brains were not working right because the oxygen to their brains was cut off by the tightening of their sphincter muscles.
