The Robson Square Witch Trials

Just one more day before Steyn gets thrown in the drink.

My day is pretty much tied up with masking tape and a race Corvette, so you're advised to seek Andrew Coyne for the gory details.

Update - I'm beat. 9 straight hours in the paint booth (I may have photos in a few days. Depends on what they send me.). A couple of items to wrap this up - Beyond the Twilight Zone, the written submissions from Canadian Association of Journalists and the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Civil Liberties Ass'n., plus, we hear again from Tarek Fatah in Coyne's comments thread;

Dear ‘Just Living,’

Try living a full and free life instead of hiding behind a cyber-burka and a name that tells all, viz., Just Living.

To label all people on this forum as ‘bigots,’ is not surprising as it is the only tool employed by Islamists hell-bent on upholding the jihadi doctrine of the Muslim Brotherhood in Canada.

I know it is difficult, but is it possible that the only people contributing to Islamophobia in Canada are the mulla-elmasry duo?

What did these twits achieve other than to embarrass all Muslim Canadians, who appear to held hostage by the blackmail of community patriotism?

Last night one of these imams came on the Michael Coren Show to discuss polygamy and made such an ass of himself, waving the Quran at the host, mocking Christianity on a Christian TV station and then claiming there was Islamophobia in this country! When I defended my faith by explaining that polygamy was a medieval Bedouin tradition meant to take care of war widows, the Imam started reading from the Quran, screaming, “My religion allows me to marry four wives…Tarek Fatah knows nothing about Islam,” then he sneered at me with ugly facial gestures, waving hands and feminine accent, “Tarek Fatah is modern … moddderrrnnn Muslim…He is not a Muslim,” as if modernity itself was his enemy!

Dear ‘Just Living’, start living and while you are at it, if you are looking for bigots, chances are you will find them in Elmasry’s mosque or Dr. Habib’s clinic, definitely not on this Macleans forum. Sarcasm? May be. Anger? Yes and justifiably so. Islamophiobia? Not a shred of it in five days of discussion.

Dear ‘Just Living,’ the notion that the US or Canada are anti-Muslim does not withstand scrutiny. The number one selling author in both countries for over two years is a Muslim: Dr. Khalid Hossieni whose novel ‘Kite Runner’ has made so many Canucks shed tears on Go Trains and in their solitudes as they embraced the young poor boys of Kabul as their very own family. There is more.

The most sold poet in all of North America is the medieval Muslim poet Rumi. Why would Americans choose to read Maulana Rumi if they hate Muslims?

The most popular sportsman in US for decades is Muhammad Ali Clay. This mischievous boxer who titillated and entertained all of us with his sly smile and political wit. And who still stings like butterfly and floats like a bee! If Americans and the US hate Muslims, why do they love Muhammad Ali, Rumi and read the Kite Runner?

Why does CNN give Ali Velshi so much airtime prominence if it is anti-Muslim? Why, if the West hates Islam, is Farid Zakaria the editor of Newsweek magazine and why is permitted to host his own show on PBS and CNN?

Right in the heart of Vancouver where the boy-band is spewing hate against Canada and its free press, lives Senator Mobina Jaffer. Does her appointment to the senate reflect an anti-Muslim bias in the West or Canada? How doe we end up electing a young Muslim lawyer from Ottawa Centre if Canaucks are anti-Islam? And if your anger is directed at the Conservative flank of Canadian political spectrum, why them would the Reform Party, then the Alliance and later the Conservatives elect Rahim Jaffer as an MP since 1993. Or do you discount him to be a good Muslim simply because he is smart, good looking, dates a lovely MP and wears stylish suits, and heavens forbid, has sense of humour that borders impish naughtiness, a trait that would help such cry babies as Khurrum Awan and Faisal ‘Joseph’ to grow up and stop sucking on their thumbs as they utter drivel.

Dear ‘Just Living,’ please start living.

Indeed. (Thanks to Lori for the catch.)

It is interesting to speculate on the thinking of the Roos. Do they realize that this could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back or are they blinded by yet another opportunity to expand their purview?

I’m betting on their stupidity and sense of self-importance. In fact I am relying on it, otherwise we’ll continue on with little guys being beaten up by the state. Maclean’s has the financial power to elevate this thing to where it needs to go.

This has been an educational week.

The problem here is not the complainants. A-holes like those clowns are a dime a dozen, there's never any shortage of jerks willing to complain about pretty much anything at all. Their pissy little lives are their own best punishment, IMHO. What goes around, comes around.

No, our problem is empire building bureaucrats in our over-fed civil service constantly prospecting for new turf to lord it over.

Here we see the making of the actual Human Rights sausage as it were. There are no rules, there aren't even any guidelines really, no "Pirate Code" for these holy men on their quest for "social justice". Social justice being fundamentally different from actual justice, it seems.

Let's just hope Macleans has the 'brass ones' that Mark and Ezra have and they don't bow out once the heat really gets turned on.

Watched MDL yesterday and when he tried to bring up the topic with the pundits, the NDP gal (forget her name) just brushed it off as being 'way below the radar' in Canadian public opinion. Thanks to a lazy MSM, she's partially right, although 'Tiny Mike' is trying his best to keep the spotlight on the subject.

O/T...looks like Kate will probably crack the 9 million mark this weekend!

Kate,

I just had to draw the attention of you and your readers to Andrew Coyne's last entry, which I've compiled here. Absolutely unbelievable!!!

Posted by: Robert W. at June 6, 2008 5:00 PM

...and I just got a call from the Conservatives asking for money. I told them in no uncertain terms what the conditions for my financial support would be.

The telemarketer tried to say "...but you know, there SHOULD be a limit on what you're allowed to say...". Ummm, no actually, there isn't.

I have always voted Conservative, I will always vote Conservative, but not another damn cent goes their way until they take action.

My speculation is that Macleans/Steyn will lose. The HR people, who operate without due process, without following normative rules of evidence and witnesses, who make up the rules as they go along - these people MUST rule against Macleans/Steyn simply because, without rules - what's left?

What's left is the emotionalism of 'being offended'. And certainly, any and all can and are offended. By just about anything. So, if Being Offended is the ONLY, I repeat, the ONLY criterion, then, the HR tribunal of empty-headed acritical, irrational people...must find that indeed, these particular Muslims were offended.

My question then becomes, IF they were offended by Steyn's article, then, why aren't they filing HR complaints against those radical imams whom they say 'misrepresent' and harm Islam? Why aren't they filing a human rights complaint against those imams and those writers whom they define as 'extremists' who harm Islam? Well?

I too got the call for another donation from the CPC.

The young guy on the line tried to convince me the donation was needed for the upcoming election that the Liberals are posturing for.

I felt like the intended victim of a snow job, knowing that Steffie Dion is so afraid of losing an election and ergo his leadership that it will be many moons before we see an election.

However, I explained that that aside, I wouldn't be donating anything as I have emailed Rob Nicholson as well as my MP, Dave Batters, and advised them that not another cent will be forthcoming until they get these maniac HRC's under control or shut down.

By the time I finished my tirade, the poor young guy could only say "all right, sir, thank you, sir."

IMO the phone campaigners are hearing the same story over and over.

Kate,

As I am not up to speed on all the ins and outs of politics north of the border, I would like to use your site to post an open letter from myself, to the Canadian Government and Civil Service, if that is OK. If you wish to forward it to those people you feel should read it, (Rob Nicholson??) please feel free to do so. Thanks

My Dear Canadian Friends,

Even though I am an American, I have been watching the Mark Steyn trial closely these last few days.

I must say that through this trial I have been given me a much greater respect for the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and our Supreme Court. At one time I thought it silly that pole dancing and Hustler magazine were "protected speech"...but I must say I would much rather have flag burning and pole dancing and Hustler magazine be "protected speech" than have the Canadian Human Rights Commissions deciding what is and is not plus ungood thoughtcrime.

Yes, the Human Rights Commission IS an embarrassment to eight centuries of English Common Law and Jurisprudence. (Somehow I suspect that if Mr.Steyn were to reference that the Magna Carta was signed at 1215 he would be told that the Court had been in lunch recess from 12:00 to 12:55 and that if he wanted to introduce a document into evidence he should not do so while the Court is at lunch.) Still we should not look just at the darkness here... as an American I try to look on the bright side.

Yes, there is a bright side, at least for the Yanks. The HRC has accomplished the rather difficult goal of making the Canadian Government into the laughing stock of the entire English Speaking World. That is no small accomplishment considering the stiff competition for that title coming from both Washington D.C. and 10 Downing Street these days! In fact, for many years taking that title from Washington D.C was a goal considered to be impossible by many. Nonetheless through timidity, intellectual blindness, and the sort of sheer bureaucratic ignorance that makes a brick look intelligent and open minded by comparison, the HRC has managed to make the Bush Administration, the Democratic Congress, and even Gordon Brown look like models of competent, intelligent, and well managed government. By hitting a new rock bottom, the HRC has managed to make the rest of us look better by comparison. Thank you!

Yes, this no doubt is humiliating for many Canadians, seeing your nation treat the Magna Carta and eight hundred years of Common Law as so much paper to be recycled; but do not think your pain goes unrecognized. We Yanks sincerely thank the HRC for its' exceptional efforts to make sure that the US does not have the most moronic government on the continent. We understand and respect that this was no small accomplishment. The truly stunning levels of stupidity exhibited by the HRC may be a national embarrassment to Canada; but they make the rest of us look brilliant by comparison. No longer will Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama have to be the brunt of jokes...now even the most backward, ignorant and inbred areas of the South will be able to point at Canadian Human Rights Tribunals and say "Well, at least we ain'ts as ignorant and bigoted as them guys!"

I know that the next time I encounter an American bureaucrat who has an I.Q. that would be considered sub-normal for a turnip, the learning ability of a tennis ball, and who exhibits the sort of mental agility that is normally associated only with members of the plant kingdom, I will say to myself "Well it could be worse... in the Canadian Civil Service this person would be considered a genius and be the Judge on a Human Rights Commission!" and I will again thank my lucky stars that I live SOUTH of our common border.

I would like to say "Keep up the good work!" but to be honest, as displays of bureaucratic incompetence and sheer mental dullness go, this one will be hard to top.

Take care

"The truth is evident to all who are unblinded by dogmatism that men nowadays are tired of liberty. . . . If any Government is deprived of force . . . it will be at the mercy of the first group organized and determined to overthrow it. . . . Liberty is no longer a chaste, severe maiden for whom generations in the first half of the last century fought and died. For the intrepid, restless youths . . . order, hierarchy and discipline. Fascismo is not afraid to declare itself illiberal or antiliberal. It has already passed, and if necessary will pass again, without the slightest hesitation, over the more or less decomposed body of the goddess of liberty."

ET, I'm betting they are acquitted as I posted earlier to irwin. Taking this folly completely off of the cliff is going to cost them their jobs. As parasitical bureaucrats I'm sure they are figuring out which option keeps them employed. Liberal politicans don't want them to put Canadians in a mood to reflect on how this mess got started and the voting alternatives.

Keep in mind that the CHRC has never had to cope with the deluge of negative press coverage or public interest before.

The only ones that can't salvage anything in this travesty are the Muslims that have brought nothing but well deserved scorn on themselves. They look less like victims and more like predators. Briefcase jihadi tactics haven't worked out so well for them.

Posted by: penny at June 6, 2008 8:32 PM

I've read a lot around about this. A very common statement I conme across is:

"Not all muslims, just the extreme ones".

To me, this is like saying in WWII: "Not all Germans, just the extreme ones".

Unfortunately, the "extreme" ones force the totalitarian ideology on the rest.

So, I am very critical of islam, a totalitarian ideology like Naziism. I have no problem with "muslims", nor "germans". I consider them followers of a tradition which they were brought up with; that tradition did not allow exposure to other traditions. They are either deluded, followers of tradition or insencere.

As the Koran and the example of The Great Mo show, these other expressions of ideas and thoughts and "traditions" must be resisted, fought and their practitioners killed. It's right there in the koran. Sorry.

So, do not be shy.

Can anyone get the video up of the lunatic that Fatah describes in his post? I checked the CTS web site, Coren's site and youtube but nothing

Posted by: matt at June 6, 2008 8:49 PM

ET @603, I agree with you. Steyn & MacCleans will be found guilty by the BCHRC. This is a great power-play for insignificant bureaucrats.

They bring down the mighty and get global coverage of themselves and their might. A defeat for S & Mc will be a great victory for the BCHRC.

Rather like the The Committee of Puiblic Safety during the French revolution.

Posted by: RW at June 6, 2008 9:11 PM

They will be found guilty, penny, notwithstanding your logic. How can they possibly spin this any other way? A not guilty finding discourages more complaints of this ilk , which keeps them employed.

If this tribunal forces Macleans to print a Muslim Brotherhood manifesto at their expense, I can hardly wait for the issue. I hope its accompanied by an article right next to it that lays the blame for this catastrophe right in the laps of the Carbon Taxheads. And to think, it's Canada's premier news magazine. Widespread, coast-to-coast publication. It's delicious.

The Liberals must be tying themselves in purple dinosaur knots right about now, trying to figure out how not to look like the complete fools that they are, having been the architects of this putrid mess. I'll bet they are going insane trying to figure out how to put this genie back in the bottle. Kick-ass indeed. Their own. And damn hard too.

"The Just Society". It is to laugh. I suggest a new motto for them: "A kangaroo in every pot".

There you go Kate. The fuzzy toy you were looking for earlier today is a kangaroo.

Posted by: Shaken at June 6, 2008 9:37 PM

Kate, thanks for the link. I've just created what I *think* will be my last posting on this issue. It also includes to an important and timely interview with BC's Attorney General, Wally Oppal. He is a good man but he is forced to publicly tow the PYA line of his employees on the BCHRT.

Posted by: Robert W. at June 6, 2008 9:39 PM

The fact remains that if successive governments did not support these disgusting Tribunals we would not have to 'watch what we think or say'. To think that in a free and democratic country we the people have to watch our every word is in direct contravention to the word democracy.
HRTs are important for any government because the more they support them the more ethnic votes they can garner. That is absolutely all that this is about. The taxpayer pays for the Tribunals to destroy anyone who speaks out of line. The fact that the one man(?) who has made the most from hauling people in front of the Tribunal was also paid for by the taxpayer when he worked there is disgusting in the extreme.
How can anyone hold there nose and vote for any party that allows this to continue. I have always supported the Conservatives( except when I was with Reform) But I will not donate or vote for them ever again if this is allowed to continue. I will reject my ballot.

Posted by: George at June 6, 2008 9:40 PM

Revolution time, people, revolution time. The people need to rise and put these monkeys on trial for violating all of our human rights, and impeach the politicians who enable them. We need mass demonstrations in the street denouncing the kangaroo courts and their minions. Let the voice of the people be heard. Our elected rules won't do anything, not even the conservatives. They are as craven as the rest of the leftists. Only the threat of a mass uprising will wake them to the fact that the govern WITH THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE. When the people withdraw their consent, their rule is forfeit.

Meh... who am I kidding. Canadians are craven cowards who'd rather bend over and spread them cheeks for another **********

The guy that Fatah mentioned is named Steve Rockwell. I started watching mid-show and immediately noticed a Spanish accent. He was certifiably nuts, in a dangerous way. He has offices at 100 Bond Street in Toronto, just south of the Ryerson campus north-east of Yonge and Dundas. He described his location as "strategic;" I'm not sure what to make of that.

Posted by: Mississauga Matt at June 6, 2008 11:08 PM

I predict the tribunal will find that they lack jurisdiction and then castigate Macleans for publishing such "hateful" material. I.e., they will do what the other tribunal did. The two tribunals have probably coordinated their strategy.

The damage they hoped to inflict has been inflicted. All publishers have been chilled. The warning sign has been posted:

WARNING: PUBLISHING STEYN COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH. YOU MAY FIND YOUR EMPLOYEES & YOUR HIGH-POWERED LAWYERS ON A FLIGHT TO B.C.

Why the H would they rule against Macleans and run the risk of having their racket struck down by a higher court on appeal? That would be pretty stupid.

After they avoid a decision on the merits, the entire furor will burn out. The MP’s will go back to their knitting, relieved that a vote in Parliament has been avoided. Steyn will no longer be published in Canada unless he submits to severe editing. And the sword will remain hanging over every publisher’s head.

The proper way for a publisher to deal with these m-f's is to say “Go to H. I’m not showing up for one of your kangaroo trials. Do whatever you want to do.” That would leave them with no choice other than to rule against the publisher. Then appeal.

Actually, on second thought, the publisher would have to appear – in order to avoid a default judgment. But they might attend without mounting any defense other than a simple statement to the effect of “We deem these proceedings unconstitutional.” Just say that one thing, over and over again, every time the publisher has an opportunity to speak.

Why do we allow Lawyers to act or pretend to be Judges? The laws are ours...not the lawyers.

I lump both professions as alike. The practice of Law needs a change in oversight. The Law society replaced with a tribunal

We could have 5th graders be the tribunal, how about ordinary citizens?

Wasn't the sock-puppets whole complaint that they were unable to counter the 'reach' of Maclean's Magazine, thus making them 'victims' of Mark Steyn's article?

How does this square with this 'fact' from the CIC's own website?

My take is that Islam creates passive/agressive tendencies with sociopathic overtones in some of it's more orthodox though wesernized followers.

FACT 8:
To date CIC has published hundreds of op-ed articles, with most reaching a readership of more than one million. The majority of these have been published by leading newspapers in Canada and abroad, including the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, the Ottawa Citizen, the Montreal Gazette, the National Post, the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, the Winnipeg Free Press, the London Free Press, the Windsor Star, the Independent, Al-Ahram, Arab News, the Egyptian Gazette and many community newspapers in Canada.

Right now parcels are disappearing at a certian depot run by certian people that I know of, I have now lost 4, the previous owner never lost a parcel, when I confronted the owner and said where are these items going are they being sold and where is the money going, he blew up and said "I don't want trouble, please get out". I am having a hard time hoping that these were lost innocently and not being sold for funds for another 9/11. I sincerly hope this problem is an anomaly and not my contribution to another 3000 deaths. This demands watching people, we must be vigilant.

Posted by: bartinsky at June 7, 2008 2:11 AM

On the TVO program, Steyn said that he and his family have been threatened with violence. I wonder if these threats came after Elmisery and the sock puppets started their campaign?

I wonder if this could be the basis for, or at least part of a real legal case brought against the CIC and the despicable three?

Posted by: irwin daisy at June 7, 2008 11:09 AM

NoGuff - there are two strategies going on with the Islamists, inducing fear and capitulation through physical violence and briefcase jihad that exploits our western, misplaced in some cases, tolerances.

The Left's assistance in the second strategy is very important to them as has been laid bare with the CHRC tribunals. The Left is intolerant of free speech which makes them highly exploitable. When are people going to wake up to that connection?

I'm convinced this is a very organized assault on legal systems with the briefcase jihadis here and in Europe. I hope someday that someone has the resources to follow the money trail because I'm guessing just like the Saudi funded mosques in NA there is funding coming from an outside source.

Posted by: penny at June 7, 2008 12:38 PM

I agree with texan.

There is no way the BCHRC will rule against Steyn and Macleans as it might mean the end of their jobs. They will have to find a way to straddle the line, condemning Steyn but avoiding a public outrage against them.

I predict that it will be something to the effect that while Steyn is Islamophobic, he was not Islamophobic enough, etc. As texan said, similar to the Ontario ruling.

You know it strikes me that people may be kind of missing the boat on this thing. All of the attention is being directed to the Sheriff of Nottingham when the real villain in the piece is the dastardly Prince, hand picked or appointed by the King. The sheriff is just the sheriff. Easily replaceable with another thug and only being true to his or her nature (i.e., doing their job). Here in Alberta, where people are told they have a Conservative government, we have King Stelmach, and his chosen high magistrate, the Atourney General Alison Redford, described in her govt bio as a "human rights lawyer" with achievements that include working in Africa with a focus on "human rights litigation, developing education programs and policy reform with respect to gender issues." Her proudest moment, according to said same bio appears to consist of having "managed a judicial training and legal reform project for the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme People’s Court in Vietnam." We shouldn't take more from that than it means, but I trust the irony is not lost. Think of it as Karma credits - we'll cover for selling out to big oil, by persecuting some Christians. If you can just see the big picture, it all works out.
