Civilizations Die

By suicide;

Tourists were shut off from the B.C. legislature’s rotunda this week as work began to hide four historical murals behind walls.

MLAs voted in 2007 to remove the murals and display them elsewhere, because some people find the colonial depictions of aboriginal people to be offensive.

Since they are painted directly on the plaster walls of deep-set alcoves, the plan has evolved to covering them until some way can be devised to take them out without destroying them.

The four murals were commissioned in 1932 as a gift to the province from Provincial Secretary S.L. Howe. They were completed by artist George Southwell to depict Howe’s desire to illustrate the “establishment of civilization” in B.C.

• “Labour” shows the building of either Fort Langley in the 1820s or Fort Victoria in the 1840s.

• “Justice” shows colonial Chief Justice Matthew Baillie Begbie holding court in Clinton during the Cariboo gold rush in the 1860s.

• “Courage” depicts the meeting of captains Vancouver and Quadra at Nootka Sound in 1792 to turn over Vancouver Island territory from the Spanish to the British.

• “Enterprise” shows Hudson’s Bay Company official James Douglas landing at Clover Point to select the site of Fort Victoria in 1843.

Unconfirmed sources indicate that consideration is being given to replacing the murals with depictions of slavery, torture and ritual human sacrifice from early American "civilizations" that eventually succumbed to oppressive European influences such as "mathematics", "written language", and "the wheel".

And all this time we were told it was about some upper body nudity in the paintings.

I'd offer that they might 'Liberally' apply paintings of prophetic storm clouds, rising waters, Al Gore with 'The Fruitfly', and rusted-out SUV's.

And guns Kate. Don't forget the big f-ing GUNS.

How about heroic portraits of Joe Stalin to go along with the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion memorial?

More historical revisionism from The Ministry of Truth.

Posted by: OttRob at June 5, 2008 11:31 AM

Let's just wall up all the museums. Deny history ever happened because it is offensive to some.

Geez. When will they ever learn?

The words "He shall have dominion from sea to sea" are currently carved IN STONE atop the parliament buildings in Canada.

I'm sure the forces of pluralism, multiculturalism and secularism would love to get their hands on them, but so far they are out of reach.

Hey,why doesn't the Liberal B.C. government just blow up the murals with high explosives, just like the Taliban government in Afghanistan did to the 1400 year old Bamyan Buddhist Shrines back in 2001.

Someone is always trying to rewrite history to serve their own narrow minded view of past events. The real idiots are the peolpe who knuckle under to these ridiculous demands.
I wonder when we will to be sending a delegation to some museum to apologize to the bones of some Neanderthal for Cro-Mangnon having driven them to extinction?

Posted by: Powell Lucas at June 5, 2008 12:04 PM

Well from my perspective the "ordinary" members of the tribe are working on the fort, providing the raw material for the white folks however the Chief is the one getting paid for their efforts in blankets, whatever I guess things haven't changed much.

And not a single Canadian is there to protest. Think of the demonstrations etc in the States when they try to mess with the 10 Commandments.

We get what we deserve.

I would just like to know how often we will be required to reset year zero and where will all the books be burnt?

Posted by: Warwick at June 5, 2008 12:22 PM

Every morning, Warwick. Year Zero is reset with your breakfast coffee. Sometimes reset again by noon, depending on the whims of whoever it is decides these things.

Posted by: The Phantom at June 5, 2008 12:26 PM

Pathetic. I hope the BC legislators realize that THEIR descendants will also be ashamed of THEM, and want to cover their pictures, and with good reason. Of course, nobody will be able to mention that shame, because of the free-speech restraints of sharia law.

Being so much more culturally enlightened than the US (as many Canadians will graciously mention without even having to be asked), Canada offers us Yanks many instructive examples of what we may become like in the future. Unfortunately for Canadians, and somewhat luckily for us, most of them seem to be turning out to be BAD examples.

Posted by: sherlock at June 5, 2008 12:35 PM

Why not just a big Pierre Trudeau mural, depicting his transformation from pure energy to a human form?
Maybe if there is any space left over they could add Tommy Douglas descending from Mount Workers Paradise with the stone tablets he delivered to the United Nations.

Posted by: richfisher at June 5, 2008 12:36 PM

Ok. Who are we at war with, Eastasia or Oceania?

Another oldie but goodie: Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Think of all the icons and gargoyles defaced by the puritans of Europe. Think of the smashed sculptures. The leaf on Michelangelo's David and the curtains on table legs. Think of the unconceivable loss of knowledge burnt in Savonarola's fires (priceless manuscripts, many of which where originals.)

You'd think this to be obvious and clichéd by now but I guess leftards aren't that interested in learning and stuff. They learn all they need to know in diversity 101 and Marxist class warfare 100.

Posted by: Warwick at June 5, 2008 12:39 PM

I should mention that my observations about "many" Canadians obviously do not apply to all of them, since "many" are also fine sensible and brave people.

Oh, and my opinions are based on "living among those savages" for almost 20 years. ;-)

“replacing the murals with depictions of slavery, torture and ritual human sacrifice from early American "civilizations" that eventually succumbed to oppressive European influences such as "mathematics", "written language", and "the wheel".

Oh dear.
Kate, the punk orchestra leader will surely swing by and record this in his note book of Canadian fascists.

Posted by: Cal at June 5, 2008 12:43 PM

The revisionist jerks must now erase Juan de Fuca, Aleksey Ilich Chirikov, Vitus Bering, Captain Vancouver, Simon Fraser, Skookum Jim Mason, Tagish Charlie, Wacky Bennett, Amor de Cosmos, aka William Alexander Smith, etc., from the history books.

While they are at it they will erase Emily Carr's works from the art museums.
May the pox fall upon these idiots.

Posted by: maz2 at June 5, 2008 1:06 PM

its a little quebec history but would make for a good picture or could be done in four scenes.

On entering the village, they were met with a shower of stones, cruelly beaten with clubs, and then tied to posts to be burned to death. Brébeuf is said to have kissed the stake to which he was bound. The fire was lighted under them, and their bodies slashed with knives. Brébeuf had scalding water poured on his head in mockery of baptism, a collar of red-hot tomahawk-heads placed around his neck, a red-hot iron thrust down his throat, and when he expired his heart was cut out and eaten. Through all the torture he never uttered a groan. The Iroquois withdrew when they had finished their work. The remains of the victims were gathered up subsequently, and the head of Brébeuf is still kept as a relic at the Hôtel-Dieu, Quebec

How is this any different than the Taliban blowing up Buddhist statues except the explosives.
At least they where straight forward in there repulsion, coupled with hate for all things not Islamist.

The only thing unique here from that event is the lying cringing attitudes of the lefts true believers, covering up with brigades of leftists desperately trying to re-write history with any political reminders or references to the past. Of course their hate for Christianity is legend as its prime goal to eradicate it. Heck they have gone so far as to say Christians should not hold public office In British Communist land. They will lose again because a bigger meaner dog wants the bone.

Canada has ceased to be a civilized Nation. I seriously think we should be looking for a new polity once this one begins crumbling into anarchy under the weight of totalitarian induced poverty conjoined with political despotism. (Unknown to the leftists so is there plan). You think not, just read how the Soviets took over Eastern Europe in 2-3 years.Unfortunantly it will not work out for them like the way they expect. By that time the US will have intervened. Or forces from West will have finally woken to the fact that Eastern Canada is really a European Nation, not North American in thought or ideals. That it too is headed the way towards Islamic domination. Socialism is a dying force with no moral core, it cannot survive out side a greenhouse economy. Since its based on looting productivity.

Like savages, Canadians are now into using our once great art as toilet paper. While making lavatory paper art. Education as propaganda, government pretending democracy. When the conservatives internal memo stated that MP’s are to not be involved in the HRC’s they proved there spots where red. There are no real Conservatives in power except a few muzzled backbenchers. How could I say that. I was one of the original people who pledged at the jubilee auditorium creating the Reform party. I voted for Harper to be leader (what a mistake) Its over folks for a bland, interventionist zealots, blighted by neo-Marxism land of less & less opportunity. The killers of freedom have triumphed. The elitists have made us social slaves with only capriciousness not courts, to rule us like cattle. While they have their islands to retreat to, with their money safe in other lands.

Just my opinion

Kate, when you commented about the potential cultural equivalent murals that depict the "highlights" of FN culture prior to first contact, you forgot to add cannibalism. That would make for a great depiction for a Country reverting to the Indian Reserve / Schoolyard, Nanny-state basket-case, Luddite, PC thought-controlled model of civilization.

So 'labour' 'justice', 'courage' and 'enterprise' are unwelvome, banned concepts.
Yep...we could see it coming. I cringe at some historical events, but denying them won't help.
Does anyone have pictures of this art...for posterity, or now?

Hello.....is there any intelligent life out there? It is just plain nutty to take down an artist depiction of what life USED to be because someone is offended in the 21st century. Those murals should be staying and people better get behind this or pretty soon they will all be succumbing to every petty little offense.

Posted by: Dawn at June 5, 2008 2:12 PM

I heard they are going to cover them with murals of the Teletubbies.

Posted by: GuyInCT at June 5, 2008 2:27 PM

A better solution is to commission new murals showing how far natives have advanced since colonization. I mean surely all of those billion of dollars spent by the government have produced all kinds of positive results. The mural of modern natives could be captioned by the motto “Quit your sniffling.” (Chief Clarence Louie)

Posted by: lynnh at June 5, 2008 2:39 PM

My suggestions for new murals in keeping with 21st century Canada.

Laborer: Have two dogs in the background mating of the same sex , while Unions members are depicted giving money to labors while stealing their wallets.

Justice: A quaint bucolic picture of criminals , drug addicts , wino's & pimps holding arms together with the police or RCMP with buddy bikers singing "We love Canada" while showing smokers in work camps with the sick & truthful journalists. With the surreal faces of the superior court done like Gods in the background, with Lucy as a high priest.

Courage: Just show the dead bodies of the Women in Montreal the "Boy's" in there yellow hood left to be killed.

Enterprise: Just enumerate the legions of bureaucrats that infest all levels of government. Pictures them looting wages of working Canadians to set up false problems to enrich themselves. Nothing as enterprising as creating another empire to oppress the masses. Paint a pic of millions of joyful robots with a rainbow colored chorus of bureaucrats singing like a heavenly choir on high.

Actually it was the Chinese that colonized British Colombia and built the great cities of Vancouver and Victoria with the help of the native aboriginals. They simply adopted the English nomenclature for the new territory to appease the European white slaves they had brought with them from Hong Kong to suppress any uprisings.

The European slaves brought many diseases and plague with them devastating much of the original native populations, and through cunning and stealth these unscrupulous slaves corrupted the aboriginals with whiskey and heroin unbeknown to their Asian overlords thus gaining a small but despicable grasp of power onto the newly developed area.

Just saying! But hey, prove me wrong in 100 years after the remainder of the historical record is discarded.

My suggestion is that the Liberals/Dippers in B.C. put some 'Truth' on the wall - how about a huge mural depicting all members of the Legislature and all the Judicial Branch on their bellies paying homage to the Great Special Interest demigod. Could have a merged 'tribunal' Obama/Tommy Douglas/turdo hovering over all in the clouds with a halo hovering around the hollowed bald head.

How about a mural depicting the MLAs voting to remove the murals, and another mural depicting the workers being paid to remove the murals, denoting labour, justice, and courage, and enterprise?

Posted by: bour3 at June 5, 2008 5:02 PM

I live in the UK and fortunately in a place far away from the cities where lunacy prevails.

Hopefully, we might be seeing the death rattle of Socialism here soon but I doubt it.

My question is to Indiana Homez. IH, where do you "jump ship" to from Canada? Many indiginous Brits are fleeing to Canada! I live in Australia for 11 years and came back.

Anybody else care to offer a destination as well?

I have to offer my throwaway lines. Last Christmas, I went skiing for the first time ever to Sun Peaks, BC which was also my first visit to Canada. I was seriously impressed with the Canadians I met. Very polite and gracious people. OK, I was in a resort but it went further than the desire for a gratuity. Thanks Canada.

We are killing our culture like Eurabia has bit by bit. Depicting the truth about Canadian Evolution is also an important part of our history. Don't the Natives want to be part of our history or would they rather we wipe out the truth lest we offend WHO exactly?

Killing our culture softly one leftarded idea at a time, what's next digging up the railway lines in Alberta and BC because the Chinese were used as canary's in a coal mine. Literally, used them as desposable human beings. If we hide our past will we commit the same sins against our fellow man again?

Posted by: Rose at June 5, 2008 5:45 PM

if we mention to the chinese that they are using their own as disposable human beings we are handed a great big cup of shut the fu k up.

never say something in an olympic year.

Isn't cultural marxism all bout apologizing for your own civilization and cultural success...this means playing kissy face with those cultures who hate your success.

Why does it not surprise me that that cultural treason is rife in a province where cultural marxism has a strangle hold on the pioneer culture that built the province.

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at June 5, 2008 7:07 PM

"A wise choice on the murals" according to the (Victoria) Times Colonist the images of our history are demeaning to aboriginals...you know with bare-breasted women and all.

Posted by: kelly at June 5, 2008 7:59 PM

Paul :

where do you "jump ship" to from Canada?

Easy enough . We are a confederation not a Republic. Where only in this for mutual benefit. When that is gone we can legally leave. We even have a procedure & Official Act for this process. Alberta has several options. Join the States, separate to be come a Republic , maybe do a Texas, or the West itself break away as one Nation.

The chronic complainers/"activists" and (most of) the MSM feed off one another, isn't it obvious? The bigger downside, aside from having to listen to all the whining and threats, is that the signal-to-noise ratio goes WAY down, drowning out the truly important issues. Maybe that's the whole intent...
