I concur with Richard about Ezra. Woo.

Can you believe that EMPTY FRICKIN' SUIT Mr. Fines there on the end? This guy couldn't hold a horse by the head.

Posted by: The Phantom at June 2, 2008 9:57 PM

The end of these kangaroo courts would be a good start toward ending the Trudeaupian cult.

Posted by: OMMAG at June 2, 2008 10:09 PM

I could of reached through the screen and spit on Fines when he suggested Canada should abide by the United Nations human rights whims. The United Nations, whom 94% of them voted for the genocide of the Jews. The only reason the civilized world belongs to that dumb United Nations thing, is for diplomatic reasons. The civilized world has to meet someplace, and pretend the barbarians can somehow rise above being uncivilized animals. Our guys have to go home and soak themselves in javex, after having to shake the hands of those evil pricks.

I just watched the whole thing. Ezra and Keith Martin were honest and staight up. Mr. Fine's a weasel: standing on worm-ridden ceremony all the way. What a creep.

Posted by: lookout at June 2, 2008 10:26 PM

Ezra Levant rocked! It was an awesome display. I hope he swayed a few fence sitters in the audience, and opened the minds of a few others.

Martin looks like the straightest arrow I've ever seen in politics. Too bad he left the right side of the political debate, even if some of his opinions are not classic conservatism.

Fine. Meh. Yesterday's news, trying to fight the tsunami of contempt that his heading his way.

Posted by: Lori at June 2, 2008 10:34 PM

Haha, I haven't been following this issue very closely, but this Ezra Levant fellow made a fantastic speech there. Game, set, match.

Well done.

Ezra reminded me of Judge Judy after a wife beater. He trapped him good , real good. When Mindelle Jacobs the left winger is worried, you know he got threw to them. Fine talked like a loon, the perfect picture of the bureaucratic robot who can’t see past procedure, or the effects of anything but his own schema. Hiding behind a desperately flawed Act. Trying to defend an evil he can’t see for being immersed in it.

Just my opinion

Ezra Levant: not angry enough.

Posted by: Ed Minchau at June 2, 2008 11:56 PM

The Liberal MP points out that Sec. 13 exempts broadcasters from exposure to star chamber proceedings. The dunderhead from the HRC cannot offer ANY rationale for the exemption.

Every Canadian should appreciate the significance of the exemption for broadcasters. It means that those who are in a position to reach the BROADEST audience have ZERO risk of being the subject of an HRC complaint. The talking heads have greater rights than anyone else in the country. And, in the final analysis those who control broadcast media are in a position to control Canada. The rest of you could become their serfs.

It was funny watching the expression on the young lady's face, while clapping, after hearing Ezra's opening remarks.

It looked like "if they see me clapping for him will they come for me next?"

Freedom of association indeed.

Posted by: Glenn at June 3, 2008 12:42 AM

Look, you guys are advanced. I have never been so outraged by a ... I don't know ... politician as I am with Fines.

The constant deferrals to hansard made me wickedly angry....almost hateful...

Posted by: Tuco at June 3, 2008 1:16 AM

Ezra Levant: MONSTER balls!

Posted by: Eskimo at June 3, 2008 1:45 AM

Ezra rocks and Fine is a weasel who dodges every question and can't give a straight answer. Martin has the right perspective and is a fine parliamentarian.

Posted by: Rudester at June 3, 2008 2:07 AM

We've got some moron Islamists in this country screwing around with our system. We shouldn't even be having these discussions. The real problem is not the Islamists but the bleeeeeding heart Liberal Socialists that are running amok in our society creating havoc. They are the ones that need a little return in the Karma area.

Oddly, what struck me about Ian Fine was his overall 'grayness', that non-descript suit, the pallor of his skin, the constant referrals to "we don't set the rules, we just enforce them".

He is the perfect bureaucrat. Unquestioning in his task. Certain of his infallability. Falling back to the 'process' when pressed.

At the same time, he was kind of frightening.... I could easily visualize such a person acting as an agent of the Wermacht.

Other than that though, he's probably a nice enough man.

Posted by: No Guff at June 3, 2008 3:12 AM

Had to godwin the thread, eh No Guff?

Posted by: Samuel at June 3, 2008 3:23 AM

Ezra was brilliant, Dr. Martin was reasonable and clear, Fine was fanatical.

When Fine said Hate! HATE! HATE! there are too many who HATE; chills ran down my spine - I guess I watch too many WWII
documentaries...and know too many people who lived under the evil boot of Communism / Totalitarianism. In his (Fine's) words my minds eye saw red - blood gushing from the smashed faces of victims; on an order from powerful bureaucrats who are driven by a fanatical hate for people they do not know.

Thank-you Ezra and Dr. Martin for speaking up for all of us.

Posted by: Jema54 at June 3, 2008 5:28 AM

That line from Fine, stating there could never be enough laws against hate, was the stopper. Ezra ripped him apart with that. Fine thinks political correctness, a government enforced politness, will protect Canada from wars, famine, terrorist attacks, and rabid dogs.

The journalist in the audience were afraid, yes afraid, to state their opinion. It is like freedom of speech and thought was a brand new concept. Something they would have to mull over, before they embraced it.

Thank you Ezra!

Ian Fine...defending a section that is so important that it has only been used by one person who just happens to be at the heart of upcoming inquiries and a former employee of the CHRC...
Ezra and Dr. Martin are certainly at the upper end of this food chain.

I somehow think we may someday look back and realize this panel discussion was a historic turning point.

Posted by: ron in kelowna at June 3, 2008 10:55 AM

Would have been a most inopertune time for a laptop crash !!

Posted by: ron in kelowna at June 3, 2008 10:58 AM

Listened to the whole thing last night, reflecting on it this morning. One thing that struck me.

After the opening statements, everyone applauded politely, it seemed like people were actually timid about applauding for a "right winger" like Ezra.

The only other time I recall applauding, was towards the end when Ezra SLAMMED Fine. That was real applause.

Might have been my imagination, but I got the feeling that the people in the room really "got it" and were waking up to the fact that these HRC's are dangerous.

Anyone else get that impression? I plan on watching this again, it was so darned entertaining.

Keith Martin made a fundamental error in his closing remarks when he stated that this was a lively debate in a democratic nation.

Fact is Canada is a constitutional monarchy and is about as far away from a democratic nation as you can get. In a democracy, leaders are elected to their positions by direct elections. I defy anyone to show me a ballot that has the Premier, Prime Minister, Governor General or the Head of State on it.

I love Ezra, and agree with him and Steyn wholeheartedly. But they are truly fleas arguing over who owns the dog! Canada needs a democratic revolution and needs to become a republic of the people.

Could you imagine this type of kangaroo court taking place in the USA? Not likely.

Posted by: KPD at June 3, 2008 11:47 AM

Good thing Keith was in between them !!

There is no freedom of speech in France.

Posted by: Kyla at June 3, 2008 12:44 PM

It was nice to see a topic as important as free speech was so well attended by the heavyweights of Canadian journalism.

Kudos to Keith Martin for doing what the Conservatives couldn't, but his protestations about state involvement in Canadians lives make one wonder whether he knows he is a member of the Liberal Party. The party Orwell points to right now and says "See, I told you".

Good on Ezra. We need a lot more like him.

Fine would make a great commercial for small government.

See what what writing about what's on one's mind gets in France?

"French film star Brigitte Bardot was today convicted of provoking discrimination and racial hatred for writing that Muslims are destroying France.

A Paris court also handed down a €15,000 ($11,920) fine against the former screen siren turned animal rights campaigner.

A leading French anti-racism group known as MRAP filed a lawsuit last year over a letter Bardot, 73, sent to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. The remarks by the star, who helped popularise the bikini during her heyday in the 1950s, were published in her foundation's quarterly journal.

In the December 2006 letter to Mr Sarkozy, now the president, Bardot said France is "tired of being led by the nose by this population that is destroying us, destroying our country by imposing its acts."

The actress, who is most famous for her sex kitten role in And God Created Woman, was referring to the Muslim feast of Eid el-Kebir, celebrated by slaughtering sheep.

Bardot's lawyer, Francois-Xavier Kelidjian, said he would talk to her about the possibility of an appeal.

"She is tired of this type of proceedings," he said..."

If Canada truly had a democratic revolution, it wouldn't become a republic, but several republics. There is no Canadian nation, and there's no one Canadian people. Ontarians are not the same people as Westerners.

If you want the country to stay together at all costs; if you've ever cursed the Quebec separatists as "traitors": congratulations! You've done your bit to destroy democracy and freedom in your country.

I want to comment on just one interesting satement made by Mr. Fine, where he says, "there is a segment of our society that believes that free speech should be sacrosanct.... but the reality is that the L A W O F T H E L A N D ... etc."

I think Mr. Fine pretty much said it all right there.

So it's come to this folks... there is only a "segment," of our society that believes in free speech now. Pinko socialism... don't you *love* it? This is the opening act of the socialization of human thought. Don't tell me you seriously thought it would all end just with the violation of property rights? Property is just one small extension of the private individual... socialists want more. They want to get their fingers all over your body. It started when they insisted on knowing how much money you make. But they were not content with that. Now they want to go deep down into your bones. Around your genitals... and into your mind.
