The Triumph of the Political Class

This sounds like an interesting book that would be worth the time for Canadians to read, too. While the book addresses British politics I think many of the same maladies and trends apply to Canada as well. We've certainly seen a rather stubborn trend of growth and power of the political class in Canada and getting Conservative parties elected has rather less effect on this trend than we would like.

Perhaps we haven't descended as far or fast down this path as Britain has, and thankfully we don't have the complications of the EU to deal with, but I think this book might offer some lessons for us in Canada.

Read the whole post here:

His basic argument is that today's political class has little experience of the real world outside the corridors of power, is drawn from an insular group of metropolitan folk who consider themselves superior to, and cut off from, the ordinary mass; it craves power for its own sake and for its monetary rewards, is corrupt, venal, obsessed by controlling the media, and has damaged and is damaging any institutions and practices - such as the old House of Lords or judiciary - that get in its way. Oborne argues his case with a tremendous passion and penetrating use of argument. At the end of the 334 pages of text one is left - which I think is the idea - feeling rather depressed. With good reason.
And check out the book here.

Today's political class are small minded, inbred, sycophants, will little innate intelligence, more interested in power and forwarding certain Corporate Agendas - Chretien and Rae are Power Corp Mouth Pieces. They lack any real intelligence or scruples : Rae to Libs, Turner to Lib, etc. They are pathetic, little hypocrites -Taliban Jack and Madame Mao, Dion, more interested in their entitlements: The Toronto Catholic School Board of Education. They will cling to power, saying anything to stay - Harper - the list is endless. By the way Barak bin Obama has resigned from the Church of Hate. Will he now join a Mosque and will Michele, the Queen of whine, now wear a burqa?

The political class is relatively new phenomenon. It used to be the gentry that ran the politics.
For bad or good, the political class got rid of gentry, to take over. As it is with human nature, the political class hoodwinked the plebeians that the gentry are nothing more then the rich that want to rule the mob and keep the plebeians in their misery.
Interestingly, the mericans have developed a more egalitarian society, where there are still rich, the burdened middle and the poor; though as the merican constitution says they are equal. So today, it is the ‘democrats’, socialist and the media that is stratifying the populace.

If you visit the US often, you may gather that the strata are mostly in the money as opposed to the behavior. The rich and poor behave equally stupid or good. The working person does not give a sheet about the rich feeling superior, which is why the rich have their circles; otherwise, what is the point of being rich if nobody cares.
Mind you, there is nothing a priori wrong with being rich.
Rather it is the news media that would like to, and does, insist that there is superior class.
Mericans and to certain extend Canadians are more egalitarian and the intelligent will not give more or less respect to someone who is rich or poor or in the middle, then is common courtesy.

It is part of the well known communist mode of operation to keep things in flux, so nobody gets settled into comfortable place, therefore the ‘democrats’, socialists and the MSM are doing the flux as a proxy.

You may observe that if you don’t follow or behave, in political sense, as is expected, you are defined as being somewhat odd.

If you, on the other hand buy in to the ‘democrat’ and MSM agenda from the media dismissed shade of politics, then you are a maverick.

You are not very likely to know, in fact may think that this is some kind of nonsense, though here it is.

In the late 60’s of the past century, many of the sons and daughters of the ruling communist class, in a particular country (maybe others too), studied in universities in London and Paris. We used to joke they are studying the rotting of capitalism, wink, wink.

The observation in the post is accurate, and is showing the evidence that; in general, Europe and Canada are on their merry way towards totalitarianism. Mericans on the other hand are still very aware and actively working to oppose this nonsense. Though in the institutions of so called higher learning, in subjects commonly described as humanities and excluding physical science like engineering and such, they are hell bent on showing the plebeians, what is good for them.

term limits for all politicos at all levels. its the only sane thing to do.

Canada's political class is a familly business, AKA Power Corp. Don't forget that many of these people from Bob Rae to Chretian are actually related and connected to Power Corp.

Old White Guy, term limits are a bogus panacea. I worked for a term-limited state legislature in the US, and all that does is hand more power to lobbyists and staffers, because the legislators have no institutional memory and no institutional loyalty. And they just jump from one term-limited office to the next anyway.

The Canadian Federal government is largely run by the senior civil servants, who have been characterised as "the Mandarins" for good reason. This has been the case at least since WWII, and is Mackenzie King's most enduring legacy. The mandarins tend to be people of great ability (witness the career of Paul Tellier if you are in doubt).

Stephen Harper has cultivated the senior public servants, which is the main reason why he is still in power. It is also the reason that his government has been timorous on issues of importance to coservatives.

When "Yes, Minister" was popular on TV, the joke in Ottawa was that people notin the public service thought it was a joke; in fact it was closer to reportage than to fantasy.

I've read the book - in fact I've been rereading it for the past couple of days. I'd agree that Canada has a political class to a degree, but it isn't as monolithic as over here in the UK.

We may not be pleased by the perceived lack of progress of the Harper government but just remember that he is actually trying to make worthwhile reforms to the Senate, and the media hates him - which must count for something.

dave j. i don't see how turning these guys out every 8 to 10 years could be a problem. remove the lobbyists. staffers follow the laws as written. failure to do so results in dismissal.

by the way under a properly constructed term limit program you would not be allowed to slide sideways.
