This article is from Touchstone & concerns the modern Family.

Here is a bit of the screed.

The Family Factors
Lessons from History About the Future of Marriage & Family in the United States

by Allan Carlson

For three decades now, I have tried to explore and explain the historical context for our contemporary “family crisis,” our “war over the family,” our “culture war.” Here I will present what I see as six lessons to be learned from this history, and with an eye to the future.

Permanent Issues

Lesson One: The family issues never change. Or at least they haven’t changed for over two centuries, since the Industrial Revolution began. Take, for example, this peculiar story:

Jack was sitting before the hearth fire, darning his working’s wife’s sock. A tear lay in his eye. ‘No,’ the wretched man said in a thick Yorkshire accent, ‘there is plenty of Wark for Wemen and Bairns [children] in this quarter but very Little for men—thou may as well go try to finde a hondred pounds, as go to find wark abouts heare—but I hed not ment neather thee nor eneyone els to have seen me manding t’wife’s stockings, for it’s a poar job.’

The poor man “wiped away the tear,” the story continues.

‘I do not [k]now what is to become of us,’ he whimpered, ‘for she as been t’man now for a long time, and me t’woman—it is hard wark.’ When he had married, Jack said, he held a fine job and the couple ‘gat on very well—we got a firnished Home. . . . I could wark for us boath. But now t’world is turned upside down. Mary has to turn out to wark and I have to stop at home to mind Bairns—and to Wash and Clean—Bake and mend.’ At that point, Jack lost control and wept violently declaring over and again his wish that he had never been born.

Who wrote this lament about sex roles turned upside down? Was it some early version of Beverly LaHaye? Or perhaps an ancestor of Phyllis Schlafly? No, it was the proto-Communist Friedrich Engels, in his 1844 book, The Condition of the Working Class in England, a powerful indictment of industrial capitalism’s social effects.

National Post Editorial today titled "David Miller's folly" re making all hand guns illegal sums it up well: "Can someone please tell us how this ignorant demagogue became mayor of Canada's biggest city"?

Like McGuinty, he got RE-elected and BY the people so who's to blame?

While we're at it let's give a good boot in the arse to all the reporters jumping on this like the usuals, Don Martin and David Akin et all, who are sensationalizing the Bernier gaffe/stupidity, they really don't have all the facts either.

Suffice to say Bernier was concerned about the wrong briefs and proved he certainly was not qualified for the post entrusted to him by Harper. He looks like a boy who has some growing up to do and not in politics. Now we have to have all the National Inquirer reportage about a woman scorned or some such crap.

Later, ex-PM Paul Martin, Jr., appointed Scott to Martin's cabinet.

One thing about TO is that there have been very few good people who are willing to step up and run for mayor. So when election time comes around most people can either not vote or choose the best from a bad lot. In effect, Miller is the best of a bad lot and the thing that bothers people most is that Miller knows he has no competition - he just has to appease the numbskulls that voted him in.

The interesting thing is that McGuinty may be trying to download more provincial powers to TO (and other ON cities). This may have the unexpected effect of having real leaders challenge Miller and cause real change at city hall.

Theodore Dalrymple's observations on immigration problems in Britain vs France, A Confusion of Tongues:

To the anxiety about these unprecedented demographic changes—a substantial majority of the public, when asked, says that it wants a dramatic reduction in immigration—one can add a reticence in openly expressing it. Inducing this hesitancy are intellectuals of the self-hating variety, who welcome the destruction of the national identity and who argue—in part, correctly—that every person’s identity is multiple; that identity can and ought to change over time; and that too strong an emphasis on national identity has in the past led to barbarism. By reiteration, they have insinuated a sense of guilt into everyone’s mind, so that even to doubt the wisdom or viability of a society consisting of myriad ethnic and religious groups with no mutual sympathy (and often with mutual antagonisms) is to suspect oneself of sliding toward extreme nationalism or fascism; so that even to doubt the wisdom or viability of a society in which everyone feels himself part of an oppressed minority puts one in the same category as Jean-Marie Le Pen, or worse.

A progressive Liberal finds Liberal "principles" have become an albatross 'round his neck.
Liberals are racial profiling "ethnic groups". What to do?
...-

"Liberal Targeting of Ethnic Groups Inconsistant with our Principles

I recently had the privilege to attend a training session for the Liberal Party. While I learned many useful and helpful campaign techniques, some of the training content did concern me. For example, when we were studying Voter Contact, one of the sub categories we examined was "targeting by ethnicity," as you can see below.

I am uncomfortable with our party targeting individuals and deciding on their usefulness or lack thereof simply based on their ethnicity. We are supposed to be a party of openness and inclusion, where all Canadians, regardless of race, religion, and background can feel comfortable and welcome.
I strongly encourage our Party to cease targeting voters based on ethnicity and instead focus on recruit the Canadian population as a whole."

They advertised it as the "See the Ice Before it's All Gone" cruise . . . and lotsa dummies paid big$$ to go . . . .

From the Globe and Mail article:

I am on the bridge of the massive Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, and the tension is palpable. We have hit ice - thick ice.

The ice master studies the mountains of white packed around the ship while the 24,000-horsepower diesel engines work at full throttle to open a path. The ship rises slowly onto the barrier of ice, crushes it and tosses aside blocks the size of small cars as if they were ice cubes in a glass. It creeps ahead a few metres, then comes to a halt, its bow firmly wedged in the ice. After doing this for two days, the ship can go no farther.

The ice master confers with the captain, who makes a call to the engine room. The engines are shut down. He turns to those of us watching the drama unfold, and we are shocked by his words: “Now, only nature can help this ship.” We are doomed to drift.

What irony. I am a passenger on one of the most powerful icebreakers in the world, travelling through the Northwest Passage - which is supposed to become almost ice-free in a time of global warming, the next shipping route across the top of the world - and here we are, stuck in the ice, engines shut down, bridge deserted. Only time and tide can free us.

Inferring Human Colonization History Using a Copying Model

Genome-wide scans of genetic variation can potentially provide detailed information on how modern humans colonized the world but require new methods of analysis. We introduce a statistical approach that uses Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) data to identify sharing of chromosomal segments between populations and uses the pattern of sharing to reconstruct a detailed colonization scenario.

Our results are consistent with the consensus view of a single “Out-of-Africa” bottleneck and serial dilution of diversity during global colonization, including a prominent East Asian bottleneck. They also suggest novel details including: (1) the most northerly East Asian population in the sample (Yakut) has received a significant genetic contribution from the ancestors of the most northerly European one (Orcadian). (2) Native South Americans have received ancestry from a source closely related to modern North-East Asians (Mongolians and Oroquen) that is distinct from the sources for native North Americans, implying multiple waves of migration into the Americas.

Well, isn't he a successor of the even more ignorant demagogue Barbara Hall? Canada's biggest city (or at least part of it) has also regularly re-elected John Godfrey with absolute majorities. The Post needs to start asking the questions about Canada's biggest city that those of us who don't and wouldn't live there have been asking.

The fact that this chick wanted 50,000. to tell her story says a lot. She has said a lot of things but has not offered any proof of anything. Does she have a time-stamped photo of those files that supposedly were missing for 5 wks. NO. Does she have evidence that her house and bed were bugged, NO. Does she have evidence that Max picked out her clothes, NO.
Was a security check done on her by the liberals, when she got access to airport files? If so, what did they find out, and what was filed away for future use to blackmail her with.
The 5 Ws comes to mind, who introduced them, where did they meet, when did they meet, why was the meeting set up, and what was the reason behind it.

Rod Liddle, A century from now, we will be appalled that we allowed abortions at all

I may be wrong about this, but it strikes me that in a century or so, or maybe even less, we will be appalled that we allowed abortions at all. I do not mean that we should not allow them now; it is merely a suspicion that the advance of our knowledge about the life of a foetus, coupled with an improved ability to prevent conception, will mean that we will be mystified as to how such a primitive and brutal procedure could have become state-sanctioned and commonplace. I can see politicians in 2108 erecting monuments and offering apologies to the unborn dead — divorced from the reality of where we are now, and why. Apologising, in the manner of Tony Blair, with hindsight for crimes which were not considered crimes except by a furious and vengeful minority.

The suspension in logic here is astounding. It appears that most people here are positing that indeed Bernier was set up by the liberals, that somehow he was co-erced into bringing classified documents into the house of his then girlfriend who was known to Bernier as the former lover a gang-land figure.

Next, we make the further step of impossible logic to suggest that in fact the entire liberal caucus, the bloc, and everyone else and their mom also sat on the story until Harper's trip so as to embarass him on the world stage?

Riiight, that makes perfect sense, especially when others here are positing that it's going to boost support for Harper from Quebec...

"If we believe that the situation is caused by global warming, then it is time for the international community to implement effectively the Kyoto Protocol by reducing greenhouse gas emissions," she argued."

These are opinion-writers who are hardcore Liberals, party of the old cronyism.

What did Chretien do with Gagliano's mafia connections and other misdeeds? Made him ambassador to Denmark.

What did Chretien do about Radzwanski's problem with Canada Revenue - and his declaration of bankruptcy (yet still living in a Toronto mansion)...he made him a top highly paid civil servant in Ottawa where he proceeded to milk the taxpayer dry for expensive dinners and trips.

And why doesn't the press ask Ms Couillard, who is busily trying to make a living out of newpaper and tv interviews (she seems to have no employment)...why she waited a month before returning the papers? Is she a citizen? Doesn't she have a duty to return the papers immediately? To his office? Why wait a month - and why call her lawyer asking what to do with them?

Oh - and her mattress 'bugged'? Sure. When was the last time she changed the sheets and would have found those 'staples'?

Write Travers and see what he says.

Doesa anybody know how we can compile a list of how many times Liberal cabinet ministers were caught leaving sensitive documents in public places. I seem to recall Joe Volpe leaving some in either a taxi or restaurant? Also, should we not ask because "Canadians want to know" (gag) all about whether or not background checks were made on the spouses, children, friends and relatives who may havew dropped by a Liberal cabinet minister's home when there were senstive documents in their homes.

So, if this is REALLY about national security then the media canot be selective now can they?

"Quebec gave security contract to Couillard's boyfriend
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

QUEBEC - The Parti Quebecois says the Quebec government granted a prisoner-escort contract to a security company run by a man with a criminal record who was once the boyfriend of Julie Couillard.

Sylvain Simard, a Parti Quebecois member of the legislature, says the $166,000 contract was granted last year to the firm D.R.P. Investigation and Security Agency.

The company was owned by Couillard's ex-boyfriend, Robert Pepin, who once pleaded guilty to trafficking stolen goods and reportedly owed money to a Hells Angels loanshark when he committed suicide last year.

Newspaper reports have said Couillard played an active role in Pepin's company during other attempts to obtain airport security contracts.

Pepin was the third man with a shady past linked to Couillard."

*"Quebec Public Security Minister Jacques Dupuis seemed to be unaware of the contract when it was brought up in the legislature today."

Joe:

Canada's media has been embarrassing Canadians with their toady Lib/left ways for many, many years:

"Mulroney’s cordial relationship with Reagan did not always go down well among Canada’s left-leaning elites, known for pathological levels of anti-Americanism. After a dinner at a summit in the mid-80s, Reagan and Mulroney, both descendants of Irish immigrants went on stage to sing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” , from page 369:

Canadians in general loved the Irish duet, but the CBC replayed the clip constantly with commentary that it was symbolic of a humiliating “toadyism” and a sub-ordination of Canada’s interests. “I must say, these people really have a serious inferiority complex”, said Margaret Thatcher after she saw a replay of such commentary during a visit to Toronto. “I certainly hope they don’t go off their medication.”

Medication. I knew something explained Liberals.

To ET: When was the last time she [Couillard] changed the sheets.... With her looks and her lifestyle, I'd imagine she'd have to change the sheets quite often.....Her mattress may have been "bugged" alright, with live little critters....

SewerGate: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Reported on CFRA, Ottawa this day, by an e-mailer, that the City of Ottawa's Medical Officer of Health reported an upsurge of infections from Mupirocin-Resistant, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CMRSA),in Ottawa and area during the time shown below. The information is on the MOH's website.
There were two deaths reported during the time period.
No report was made available to the public at that time.
This has to be confirmed.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health in Ontario is appointed by the Ontario government. The Premier of Ontario at that time was the current Premier, Liberal D. McGuinty. The Minister of Health was/is George Smitherman.
McGuinty hails from Ottawa; his brother is Liberal Environment critic for Citoyen Dion.
Have either of the McGuintys spoken out about SewerGate?
MSM Pundits/the public are openly calling this scandal SewerGate. The word coverup is also being talked about.
Does "Walkerton" ring a bell? Is this McGuinty's Walkerton?

"City Employee Fired Over Sewage Leak Communications Foul-Up

A supervisor in Ottawa's waste water department has been fired.

We first learned Tuesday the supervisor had been suspended without pay, after it was revealed he did not contact the provincial environment ministry following a sewage spill into the Ottawa River in August, 2006 - even though he said he had told them.

The actions of the employee in question have now left the city open to charges that could be laid by the province's Environment Ministry."

No Clapping. By Order.

When comments on (some) blogs have someone pointing out/saying Canadians are sheeple, do you cringe? Could Canadians really be a nation of sheeple?
The Canadian sheeple were defined from the beginning with:
""Peace, order and good government" is the introductory phrase of section 91 of the CONSTITUTION ACT, 1867 ,".
This holds today: shhh, shush, don't speak up, listen; you gotta go along to get along; vote for PET; be passive until you pass on to the PET Cemetery. PET's waiting for you. Baaaaaa ...

I wrote nitwit, Toronto Mayor, David Miller, about his looney-tune plans to ban all hand guns in Toronto. His name should be Dick--as in dick head. What a moron.

Here's the response I received:

Thank you for your e-mail. It has been received in the Office of Mayor Miller.

Mayor Miller believes the staff report released earlier this week is the logical next step in making Toronto an even safer city. Handguns are unlike anything else as they are designed and intended for one purpose: to kill people. As you may be aware, the Mayor has already publicly called for a ban on the private ownership of handguns across Canada. That call has received the support of Mayors from all over the country as well as Premier Dalton McGuinty. The Atlantic Mayors' Congress and Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay are among the most recent to add their support.

With that already underway, it is incumbent on the city to take whatever steps and measures are within its power to show that we are serious about attacking gun violence on all fronts. That means that gun clubs will have to vacate city property and gun manufacturers and distributors will no longer be able to establish themselves in Toronto. We cannot talk about a national handgun ban or approach our neighbours in the United States and ask them to help eliminate gun violence without showing we are willing to take whatever actions we can locally.

The City of Toronto has the right to regulate the property and civil rights aspects of firearms as they relate to the health, safety and well being of its residents. Handguns pose an increasing threat in our community that we must not ignore. The Mayor wants to ensure that the City is taking all available actions to address gun violence.

Specific areas of recommended action to be considered next week by the Executive Committee include:
* Land use restrictions affecting manufacture, assembly, warehousing, distribution and discharge of guns.
* Eliminating recreational use of firearms on City property, specifically, shooting ranges at the Don Montgomery Community Recreation Centre (former Mid-Scarborough Community Centre) and Union Station.
* Comprehensive monitoring of incidents and impacts of firearm violence and injury in Toronto. Providing social supports to break the cycle of violence.
* Intergovernmental advocacy.

The report is posted on the City's website at: http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2008/ex/agendas/2008-06-03-ex21-ar.pdf

With respect to the ban, that would be up to the Federal Government to act but Mayor Miller believes the urgency of a handgun ban and the impact it could have in Toronto are simple. We know that about a third of the guns used to commit crimes in this city were at one point legally registered. Recently, a legally registered handgun was used to murder someone on a Toronto street. But this is not just a Toronto issue. Canadian police services reported 8,105 victims of violent gun crime, ranging from assault to robbery and homicide in 2006 - a rate of almost 1 person per hour victimized by violent gun crime.

While there are no simple answers to the scourge of gun violence in all Canadian cities, the banning of private ownership of handguns would cut off supply of at least some of the weapons that are used for criminal purposes.

The handgun ban is part of the Mayor's strategy to make our safe city safer. Among the other parts of the strategy:
* There are 450 more police officers on our streets and in our neighbourhoods.
* We are addressing the root causes of violence through our Community Safety Plan.

The strategy is working. Young people in priority communities are benefitting from the creation of thousands of jobs, training and recreational opportunities. For more information on our plan for Making Our Safe City Safer Community Safer, please visit our website: www.toronto.ca/community_safety .

In Toronto, crime is down in every major category, except gun murders. For this reason, the Mayor's gun violence strategy includes:
* A handgun ban
* Tougher crime legislation for illegal gun use
* Increased anti-gun smuggling security at the Canada-U.S. border
* Stronger U.S. gun controls
* Continuation of community based prevention and youth opportunity development
* Continuation of the Toronto Anti violence Interventions Strategy (TAVIS) initiative of the Toronto Police Service

It's true that the majority of handguns used are illegally imported into the country and the Mayor has called on the Federal government to increase efforts to stem the flow at the border. The Mayor is also working with Mayors across the United States to have the federal government in that country take action on the easy availability of handguns.

I think you will agree that you cannot put a price on human life. If a handgun ban and the other measures we are taking save even one life, it will be more than worth it.

Karen Duffy
