Most of us have probably seen reports on the 31,072 scientists who have signed the 2008 Global Warming Petition, yet I rather wonder how many have actually realized just how danming it is. Firstly, here's the actual wording of the petition ~ petitionproject.org

We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the heath and welfare of mankind.

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects on upon the natural plant and animal environments on Earth.

Secondly, conclusions from the Review Article: tinyurl.com/3ena8u

There are no experimental data to support the hypothesis that increases in human hydrocarbon use or in atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are causing or can be expected to cause unfavorable changes in global temperatures, weather, or landscape. There is no reason to limit human production of CO2, CH4, and other minor greenhouse gases as has been proposed.

We also need not worry about environmental calamities even if the current natural warming trend continues. The Earth has been much warmer during the past 3,000 years without catastrophic effects. Warmer weather extends growing seasons and generally improves the habitability of colder regions.

As coal, oil, and natural gas are used to feed and lift from poverty vast numbers of people across the globe, more CO2 will be released into the atmosphere. This will help to maintain and improve the health, longevity, prosperity, and productivity of all people.

The United States and other countries need to produce more energy, not less. The most practical, economical, and environmentally sound methods available are hydrocarbon and nuclear technologies.

Human use of coal, oil, and natural gas has not harmfully warmed the Earth, and the extrapolation of current trends shows that it will not do so in the foreseeable future. The CO2 produced does, however, accelerate the growth rates of plants and also permits plants to grow in drier regions. Animal life, which depends upon plants, also flourishes, and the diversity of plant and animal life is increased.

Human activities are producing part of the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere. Mankind is moving the carbon in coal, oil, and natural gas from below ground to the atmosphere, where it is available for conversion into living things. We are living in an increasingly lush environment of plants and animals as a result of this CO2 increase. Our children will therefore enjoy an Earth with far more plant and animal life than that with which we now are blessed.

All right, hands up: who is anti-lush ;-?

But seriously, read the Review Article ~ tinyurl.com/3ena8u

And to be clear, I don't know what's going to happen. You will be hard pressed to find one more generally skeptical about grandiose hand-waving forecasts than I. Rather, my argument is with those who think they know more than they do, and thus who would on that incorrect basis prescribe remedies that, at least to the best of my judgement at this time, are likely to do more harm to our species than good.

T. Boon Pickens, remember him? Rings a bell because he made Billion$ in energy and knows a few things. .

** **We are importing 72 percent of our oil. ... We are now transferring $600 billion [a year] out of the United States to a few friends and a hell of a bunch of enemies. I can tell you, we are paying for the war against ourselves.**

* **If they [China] had the Olympics today, in this smog, and ran the 100 meter dash, it would have to be a relay.**

* **Diesel will never sell, again, below gasoline. It will always be more expensive than gasoline.**

* **We're actually dealing with a huge shift of capital out to somewhere. We're going to be reduced to - I promise you it's going to happen pretty quick, too - we'll be reduced to something less than the superpower that we are.**

Much more from Boone (including audio of his chat) after the break.

The biodiesel scam, now with a new twist!!!

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/05/21/splash_dash/

Here's how it can work: A tanker with a shipload of, say, Malaysian biodiesel, stops at an American port. The foreign-made fuel is then blended or "splashed" with a token percentage of U.S. diesel and "dashes" off again.

RICK KMENT: The way the law is now, all of that product is able to qualify for the blender's credit.

Biofuels analyst Rick Kment says the tanker usually "dashes" off to Europe, currently the world's biggest market for biodiesel. There the fuel is ultimately sold to European drivers, often at a lower price, because it's benefited from an American subsidy.

Congressman John Shadegg:

SHADEGG: As soon as American taxpayers realize that they are paying out hundreds of millions of dollars to lower the price of diesel outside the United States, I think they're going to say that's outrageous.

Also outrageous, perhaps, is the increase in greenhouse gas emissions from all this shipping, say critics. According to European officials, a few European companies are even shipping their own biodiesel, destined for their own domestic markets, to the U.S. first. That way they take advantage of the subsidy. It's called the "U-boat" trade because the ships make such quick stops in U.S. ports.

I checked out Crime Stoppers AB (apparently based in Edmonton) and yes, Hate Crimes are listed on their web site as being within their areas of operations/interest. I have to wonder just how long it has been there.

If, in fact, Crime Stoppers is/has been making referrals to the HRC about hate crimes, then I see this as a very negative happening. IMO, Crime Stoppers should be making hate crime referrals to the police only, and not to the AB HRC.

Given the goings on in ON, this issue needs some light.

Hopefully some techie will be able to capture the hate crimes ad referred to above by R. Dream.

Reading between the lines, T boon Pickens may be suggesting. . .

Diesel used to cost less than gas because demand was so low there was always some surplus even though refining oil makes 4 barrels of gas to one of diesel.

Volks* TDI diesel, dual rail, and bluetech have become so popular that while more efficient, the flood of sales has increased diesel demand to push up the fuel price.

So if you plan to get a new fuel miser diesel, it*s too late. You are now behind the curve.

Seems liquid natural gas is the new eco-fuel. Casts a way less than gasoline but sales depots are few and conversion is costly.

Pickens suggests LNG is the volume transition fuel from petrol to electric. Ethanol and bio-diesel are only good for 5% of North American demand.

ExxonMobile are only involved with 2% of world fuel supply, so they can*t do much other than string along and enjoy windfall profits and subsidies.

Brazil, 85% or so on ethanol and bio-fuels, makes us look so silly. = TG

Posted by: TG at May 22, 2008 2:38 AM

Two things to note:

Bush has vetoed the latest farm bill in the US, noting that it continues to distort farm priorities, doesn't limit payments to wealthy farmers or agri-business, and maintains ridiculous tariffs, such as the $0.54/gal import tariff on Brazilian ethanol. Won't do any good, though, as the brain-dead Senate (oops - sorry, Ted!), and the assorted rubes and yahoos that make up the House will doubtless over-ride the veto.

Second, the pointy-headed economists in the US published the Producer Price Index for April, and they concluded the price of gasoline, as they did for the CPI, *FELL* in April. Er, why? Oh, the price didn't go up as much as they expected it would, so in their (and I use the term loosely) minds, the price went down.

Commentators on CNBC today noted that the price of gas has not risen as much as the price of oil, and they concluded that those bad old oil companies have actually reduced margins, rather than pass on all their cost increases. Please do not hold your breath waiting for this to be reported in the Toronto Star.

Don't miss the Miller/Paikin interview. Lots of good stuff, including a great line from the Gumper.

Posted by: Woodporter at May 22, 2008 9:37 AM

After reading the recent articles by Diane Francis (National Post) as regards the "perks" taken advantage of by Canadian Citizens of Convenience, it should really be many more than a few investigators scattered about and with a considerably wider mandate than just looking at fraudulent marriages to gain access to Canada.

There needs to be considerable people/money/effort put into this entire area of passport fraud/Citizens of convenience accessing health care, to name one aspect, which they are not entitled to/examination of offshore facilities who are actually processing immigration/refugee applications/illegal entry to Canada, etc., etc., etc.

Dismantling the IRB (Immigration Refugee Board) would be a good start and their budget could be used by this group - probably with a net saving to taxpayers and having a much more effective result.

It seems that this move in the direction of marriages is a rather pathetic response to a particular situation that seems to have been reported on a few times but pales in comparison to the real problems. A cynic might even say it is another one of those reactions designed to troll for block votes.

(Via Azure) Victor Davis Hanson, The new learning that failed

Ten years ago John Heath and I wrote a lament for the decline of classical learning in the university—Who Killed Homer? The Demise of Classical Education and the Recovery of Greek Wisdom...

The book earned a wide, broad readership. Yet the indictment of the profession met with fury from classicists themselves. Despite this resistance, did the arguments of Who Killed Homer? change the field in any small way—or, inversely, did any positive, larger trend in the university bring about a renaissance in classical education during the last decade?

Sadly, the answer is no on both counts...

A lot of the comments astound me, though, even though I should know better. Here's an excerpt from the arrogant p**ck who wrote the first one:

"The senate exists to protect the electorate from itself when they make major mistakes (e.g. electing Harper). I do not trust the ignorant masses to tie their shoes nevermind elect senators."

The Nazi process produced a low-octane fuel, with the result that Wehrmacht vehicles using synfuel knocked and sputtered alarmingly. Improved production techniques (or simply higher-octane additives) can no doubt solve that, but is it worth overcoming the impediments of American law relating to greenhouse gas production?

US Military Launches Alternate-fuel Push

With fuel prices soaring, the U.S. military, the country's largest single consumer of oil, is turning into an alternative-fuels pioneer...

Despite its high-tech connotations, synthetic fuel - often dubbed "synfuel" for short within the industry - has been around for decades. The basic technology for transforming coal or natural gas into synthetic fuel was invented by a pair of German researchers, Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch, in the 1920s. The Nazis later used the Fischer-Tropsch process to mass-produce synthetic diesel fuel. During the apartheid-era embargo against South Africa, scientists there tweaked the technology so it could also produce synthetic jet fuel.

The Fischer-Tropsch process transforms a synthetic gas derived from coal or other material into liquid gas. The resulting synthetic fuel is different from biofuel, commonly produced from corn, sugar or other plants...

Tarek Fatah has it right. He stated in all the time he's been here no one ever taught him what's great about Canada. He's right on.
Since Trudeau, immigrants have come here and have no idea what we stand for because our multicultural policies tell them to act as they wish and live according to THEIR ideologies.

Idiots that we are we've allowed the whole fabric of this country built with a foundation Judeo-Christian principles with laws respecting a civil society.
Due to our Multi-culti bone headed ideology we're supposed to give up all we stand for and what principles made this Country survive to this point. Even Christmas has been deemed offensive, it's a holiday season, make it what you wish.
We either define ourselves or we stand for nothing.

Few Muslims proselytize. Even when they are the minority, they still have no need to with methods like this:

"NIGERIA: RESCUE OF GIRLS IGNITES ISLAMIC RAMPAGE"
Six churches gutted after recovery of Christians teenagers from Muslim kidnappers.

NINGI, Nigeria, May 19 (Compass Direct News) – Islamists under the auspices of a paramilitary force last week destroyed six churches to protest a police rescue of two teenage Christian girls kidnapped by Muslims in this Bauchi state town.

Police recovered the two Christian girls, Mary Chikwodi Okoye, 15, and Uche Edward, 14, on May 12 after Muslims in Ningi kidnapped them three weeks ago in an attempt to expand Islam by marrying them to Muslim men. Police took the two girls, who had been under foster care, to safety in southeastern Nigeria where their biological parents live.

The kidnappers had taken the girls to Wudil town in Kano state. Following the rescue of the girls, Muslims under the auspices of the Hisbah Command, a paramilitary arm of Kano state’s Sharia Commission, responsible for enforcing Islamic law, went on a rampage on Tuesday (May 13), attacking Christians and setting fire to the churches.

Art & ethics at Yale: On the Aliza Shvarts affair

Once upon a time “academic art” meant boring stuff that might be technically proficient but which lacked any spark of genuine feeling or vital contact with reality. Academic art was rote art, art that merely went through the motions. Its decorousness was not so much mannerly as a species of mannerism: something stale, decadent, ultimately lifeless. Academic art might be quietly lubricious. But its governing commitment was slavish devotion to whatever clichés defined establishment taste. In consequence, academic art was as predictable as it was insipid.

That was once upon a time. Today, you can forget about the technical proficiency. Hardly anyone learns traditional drawing or painting techniques any more. But today’s academic art is similarly boring, similarly predictable, similarly devoid of genuine feeling, similarly in thrall to the reigning clichés of the age. It’s just that the governing clichés today are instinct with the rancid detritus of yesterday’s avant garde...

Today, Stephen Harper and Company has turned the tables somewhat. $1.00 Cnd = 0.98.5 cents US. God bless the Conservative Party of Canada. Is it too early to celebrate the resurgence of Old England?

On the Global Day of Prayer held in London, the mayor stood on the platform while those attending (multi-coloured)prayed for him and all those who were elected with him.

And then this news today:

A resurgent Conservative party stormed to a crushing victory over Labour in the Crewe & Nantwich by-election early today ... the Tories overturned a 7,000 Labour majority to make their first gain from Labour in a by-election for 30 years — with their own 7,860 majority on a massive swing of 17.6 per cent.

God is good and greatly to be praised!
