A Bridge Too Far

He's survived the Rich Playboy Disease that took so many others before their time, so I wouldn't count the old buffoon out just yet. The Anchoress;

"My prediction: Someone - probably Keith Olbermann or Chris Matthews - will go completely over the top and say that the Kennedy illness will not mark the “end of Camelot…how fitting that it is being revived this very night by Barack Obama, Ted Kennedy’s handpicked successor to the enduring legacy,” or some such gag-inducing nonsense."

Count on it.

That Ted Kennedy is being described as the Kennedy "patriarch" is an indication of the steepness of the clan's decline.

Further thoughts: I take no pleasure in the news, either, but there's something in the knowledge that this is a man who once chose to leave a young woman to die, that has an eroding effect on my sympathy.

Just remember the name Ted Kennedy the next time someone equates "he'll have to live with it for the rest of his life" with "punishment".

Comments

Over at the Globe and Mail, they have already cut off comments about Ted Kennedy. One comment that was left standing is "This family is cursed"...or something to that effect. Actually, the comment should be "This family is a curse".

"***UPDATE***Thom writes that my prediction came true within minutes of my posting it: Unsurprisingly, it was the easily-moved and sentimental Chris Matthews who handed the revived Camelot to Obama via Ted. Sometimes I scare myself. But it’s not that I’m so smart; it’s that these people are so pathetically predictable."

That Ted Kennedy is being described as the Kennedy "patriarch" is an indication of the steepness of the clan's decline.

Just returning from whence they came. Their family history is a shakey one. Joe Kennedy Sr. was far better respected than perhaps he should have been. Stock manipulation, virulent anti-semitism, a strong supporter of Joseph McCarthy, and, according to Brits during the Battle of Britain, a coward... it's not good.

Posted by: rabbit at May 20, 2008 3:26 PM

While we're at it, let's not forget that old Joe made his millions smuggling booze. It's an odd suggestion that Camelot might have been funded by organized crime.

Was it not Tedward Kennedy who stuck the "Osama" label on Obama to begin with?

I've always loathed Ted Kennedy but I take no pleasure in news of his impending demise, particularly in view of the cause.

Posted by: Charles MacDonald at May 20, 2008 3:35 PM

Kennedy endorses Obama much to Clinton's surprise and chagrin.
A few weeks later he is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Hmmmmmm??????

Posted by: Ralph R at May 20, 2008 3:45 PM

Politicians and their mouthpieces have been known to over dramatize before so I really don't want to jump the gun on the old "Swimmer" jumping the shark any time soon.

I do not look forward however to the fawning that will ensue should his diagnoses be grave. They will start naming buildings after this guy long before he assumes room temperature. He will be painted as yet another heroic Kennedy instead of the Black Sheep of a pretty good flock.

He could never hold a candle to either of his brothers, flaws or not. Longevity and absolutely no shame at all are his greatest assets and will be his only legacy.

Meanwhile, cocktail waitresses from Massachusetts to Florida and female congressional interns in DC will all be breathing a sigh of relief that they survived the Ted Kennedy Era.

I take no pleasure in his impending death.

Of course, if there was any justice, he'd be in the PRISON medical ward instead of the finest private New England that the Kenedy bootlegging fortune can afford.

Or, barring that, his death would better have come by way of hanging for the crime of killing a woman and walking away from her when she died.

That at least would be justice. But then you don't take pleasure at hanging a murderer.

I don't think the truth was Ted's long suit., thus I have to wonder if it really is cancer. I am not normally skeptical, but when it comes to the Kennedy clan and Ted in particular, it seems wise.

Seizures happen to alcoholics. 60+ years of hard drinking could be the cause of his seizure. . His publicity machine may be in overdrive to cover up the real reason his health is failing.

It looks like the end of his drinking career is nigh one way or the other.

I must confess, when I heard he'd had a seizure my first thought was "Stopped drinking eh?". Brain tumor's aren't nice. In a perfect world no one would get them and I would not dare to presume to say who deserves and doesn't deserve them. Like the line from the move "Unforgiven": "Well, I guess he had it comin'". "Kid, we all got it comin'". I can't say that I ever saw much to redeem Ted in his behavior or his pompous, self-righteous, hypocritical pronouncements. That being said, he simply was who he was, and far worse men have lived far more blessed lives than he. What dismayed me more was that a man so utterly and transparently base could be so adored by the press and his party, could show so many to be so willfully blind to who he was and could be chosen time and time again by the people of Massachusets to be their senator. It reinforces Churhill's pronouncement that "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."

Kate deserves kudos, I guess, for providing this forum for all these oh-so-lonely fist-shakers - God knows what they'd get up to if they couldn't come here to puke up their bile!

john begley, as you cast Kennedy's soul into everlasting hell, you might want to check out your Bible, which will tell you that you are no Christian if you are so omniescently willing to condemn another to his everlasting deserts.

Rose - Kennedy is 'evil personified' - how so? For pushing through social programs to help the poor and disenfranchised for the last 30 years - the very thing Christ instructs his followers to do?

For the dopes who want to go back to ol' Joe Kennedy and hang his sins on Ted Kennedy too, are you so ignorant that you are unaware that the Kennedy family's elite privileged neighbours in Kennebunkport, the Bush family, had among its numbers Prescott Bush - GW Bush's grandfather - who did business with the companies who financed Hitler's rise to power...and actually had his profits seized under the Trading with the Enemy Act? Look it up!

(Some things don't change - witness the Bush family's business dealings with the Bin Laden family)

At least Ted Kennedy won't go to his grave as a war criminal like GW Bush!

The lies of Ted Kennedy...

Concerning the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965:

"During debate on the Senate floor, Senator Kennedy, speaking of the effects of the act, said, "First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same ... Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset ... Contrary to the charges in some quarters, [the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and deprived nations of Africa and Asia ... In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think ... The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs." (U.S. Senate, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the Committee on the Judiciary, Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 1965. pp. 1-3.)

Regarding the 1986 Immigration and Reform Control Act (the first amnesty of illegal immigrants), Senator Kennedy predicted: "This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.1 to 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forward another amnesty bill like this."

After the CIR was defeated Kennedy was incensed. When he said the following he was shouting these lies:

"We know what they're against, we don't know what they're for. Time and time again they tell us "We don't like this provision, we don't like that provision, we don't want that part. Well they ought to be able to explain to the American people what they are for.

What are they going to do with the twelve and a half million who are undocumented here? Send them back? Send them back to countries around the world? More than $250 billion dollars, buses that would go from Los Angeles to New York and back again. Try and find them, develop a type of Gestapo here to seek out these people that are in the shadows. That's their alternative?"

hey john v

Christ's injunction to help the poor would get expressed through his follower's political sympathies, wouldn't they? And such followers wouldn't be voting right-wing to help the rich crush the poor. They'd be voting the other side.

(Yes, yes, we know how the evangelicals have reduced Christ's message to abortion and bigotry against gays - two subjects on which He never spoke one word. Yes, we know they do this to co-opt Christ's name for political power and they sure as heck aren't interested in Christ's central tenet of helping the poor when their main interest is screwing the poor- but they still want to coopt His name somehow)

But why you are so interested in what Christ did or didn't say about helping the poor when you don't even believe in God?

Bolik,

The reasons Ted Kennedy was continually re-elected are three:

1 - Money. How else does a Mor(m)on like Mitt Romney get elected governor?

2 - Sympathy. He got in the first couple of times because people still remembered Jack and Bobby. But, most important:

3 - The Senate seniority system. Currently, only Robert Byrd has more time in the Senate than Kennedy. This gives Kennedy enormous clout on a number of committees, which of course ensures he can deliver the pork to his state. Follow the money!

I take NO pleasure in his cancer, but his man has much to pay for.

Posted by: Dustoff at May 21, 2008 11:11 AM

I have contempt for most of what Ted Kennedy has espoused, many of his deeds and for his hypocrisies, particularly regarding Dubya and the War on Terror. However, I won't hate Kennedy the man. It would merely corrode my own heart; Kennedy wouldn't even be aware of my hate; or if he were aware, wouldn't care.

Most importantly, let's each of us reflect on our own failings, our own sins of omission and commission. That being said, here's a quote from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice":

"The quality of Mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle raine from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest,
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes...

...Therefore though Justice be thy plea, consider this,
That in the course of Justice, none of us
Should see Salvation: we do pray for Mercy,
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of Mercy."

Teddy's made a special list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_notable_brain_tumor_patients

They wasted no time in adding his name to the list. The countdown to the national day of mourning has begun. The golden throne has been commissioned to bear the weight of the stricken King for his going away party in Denver before he takes his rightful position as a hero in the halls of Asgaard.

Many kind words and tears will be spilled over those days. The eulogy will be practiced in his presence by the loud nattering voices from his murder of crows. But all the celebration will be shadowed by the ghost of Mary Jo. The haunting will soon be over and he will be given over to her fate. As the precipice looms larger each passing day so will his last memory of her face.

Hey Rose

Only the Right would excuse Bush's lying about sending 4000 people to their deaths for oil, and among those only amoral fascist personality cultists like yourself (i.e., the 25% dead enders) would continue to defend his idiotic anti-democractic policies.

I guess the contempt you have for the voters of Mass. for repeatedly re-electing Kennedy is matched by your contempt for 80% of Americans who have decisively rejected Bush and his policies.

Hard being the only in the world who's right, huh, Rose?

No doubt you agree with the majority about the leftist controlled Congress of which only 18% approve.

DrD quotes Churchill correctly and I agree with his assesments. Lets be thankful that we can express our thoughts freely. Ted is no angel. There are very few of them. I wonder how many of you are.

They don't approve of the Dems which they gave control of congress to in 2006 because said Dems haven't stopped the war of your Feuhrer as they were put in power to do.

Ted kennedy walks into a bar with a malignant tumor on his brain-
bartender asks 'how did that get there'
the tumor says, 'it started out as a wart on my ass'.
