Freedom is an absolute. Either you are free to do something or you are not. If you have to watch what you say you are not free.

The reason why I usually disagree with Socon is because I believe liberalism (in the classical John S. Mill sense) to be directly aligned with modern conservatism. I am taxed on smokes to pay for someone else's health care... to me this is a Liberal policy, but not one of liberalism. As is a moderate dislike of abortion... when you take life (or the likelihood of life) from a fetus, you are infringing on its right to life.

This takes a left turn sometimes though... for stuff like the death penalty I don't think it's right for the government to have that power. The person may be a monster, but we are monsters for taking his/her (but more likely his) life.

Anyhow, we should have the freedom to be jerks, but also the responsibility to deal with the consequences of being jerks. Recently I had it out with Irwin over evolution. I was a jerk because I felt like he (and the other God types) was confusing a belief in the scientific process with a belief in a type of god where it is really a belief in uncertainty... I took a bunch of crap from those people for a few days but that was the burden I took for insulting something that they hold dear... even if I think it's childish.

Mug: If the only purpose of a cartoon is to "needle" a group; so be it. Satire, lampooning, mocking, ridicule, are all part of cartooning and serve a vital purpose in a free society. Usually, behind any effective "needling", there is an element of truth. Canada in particular has a long tradition of satirical and hard rude comedy ... none should be spared.

In the end, it matters not what purpose a cartoon serves ... what matters is that you be allowed to publish. Whether it is "mature" or not is simply a matter of opinion. At the risk of playing "mug"'s game... this Bruce MacKinnon cartoon was meant to "needle" or criticise not a religion or an ethnic group but a real individual, a Cape Breton convert to Islam and wife of a terrorist suspect, who was drawn pretty much as she looks and voicing the kind of overheated and tiresome whining we have come to expect from the families and advocates of terrorist suspects.

MacKinnon, himself a fairly left-of-centre person politically, has been in trouble before, once for a cartoon of a self-pitying looter (almost completely obscured by the television he or she was carrying). While it was impossible for anyone to identify anything in the cartoon that would suggest that the figure was of any particular race, MacKinnon was pilloried for a "racist" cartoon by the predictable Left in Nova Scotia, making the typical racist assumption of the Left that if you criticise looting, you must be attacking non-white people.

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission has largely been a make-work project for friends of friends and people who couldn't make much of a living doing anything else rather than a hotbed of loopy activists. If past practice is any predictor, MacKinnon's case will drag on for several years and, unless the Halifax Chronicle-Herald caves in to the complainants, will be quietly dismissed.

I refuse to surrender to those that state we have no culture, we do have a destinct culture but our youth and the leftards believe our identity is based on Muliticulturalism.
