Like CBC says, "let your voice be heard". Could be fun.

Posted by: Paul at May 10, 2008 11:42 AM

Shaw's actions are nothing new - I removed ALL CBC programing from my house years ago.

Posted by: ron in kelowna at May 10, 2008 11:45 AM

" .. and silencing an independent journalistic voice .. "

Not so !! The CBC is, for all intents and purposes, owned and operated by the LPC.

Posted by: ron in kelowna at May 10, 2008 11:50 AM

This has all the necessary ingredients for a gone horribly wrong post in the near future .... heh .

Posted by: Bill D. Cat at May 10, 2008 11:52 AM

My cable provides newsworld and cbc, and i have to eliminate them from the line up. Stepping into a big steaming pile of cbc news while surfing can be really annoying.

Posted by: morgan swift at May 10, 2008 11:53 AM

I sent my letter off to the CBC already, basically telling them to complain about something else !

Posted by: james Walker at May 10, 2008 11:55 AM

WHAT! Removed CBC Regina? The dogs. They removed CBC Halifax too it seems to me. But you know how the Mothercorp is. More redundancy all the time!

Truth be told, they could remove ALL the CBC from my Starchoice and I'd likely never even notice. Now that TSN has the Grey Cup broadcast rights.

Posted by: Sober2ndThought at May 10, 2008 12:01 PM

On May 7, 2008, without warning, Star Choice (whose parent company is Shaw) removed CBC Regina from its cable service.

"Independent Journalistic Voice"

Screencapped, just in case, well, you know...

Not having to pay for CBC - priceless.

Posted by: PiperPaul at May 10, 2008 12:08 PM

Hmm. Cable monopoly vs the CBC. I hate both so it's a toss-up. Can both lose?

Posted by: andycanuck at May 10, 2008 12:27 PM

where are the readers comments?
are we having hang over?

Posted by: george at May 10, 2008 12:41 PM

about time.
Let the CBC stop sucking the public teat, stop being the left wing media arm, and grow a set.
Its 2008 boys, wake up.
Take your sickle and hammer home

Posted by: Finally CBC gets the boot at May 10, 2008 12:41 PM

"Cable monopoly"; andy; Canada is the country that the board game used as a prototype. Why, anything else would be Right Wing!

Posted by: Gunney99 at May 10, 2008 12:43 PM

So a privet company decides to not carry some content, so what? If a consumer wants that content they can go to a carrier that does provide that content. Obviously Star choice found that this content was unprofitable or they would still carry it. Funny how that works if this product was a money maker they would carry it, if it’s a loser they don’t. Perhaps the CBC should make their product more appealing to consumers so companies could make money off it rather then complaining to the CRTC that no one wants to carry their product.

Posted by: Chris at May 10, 2008 12:50 PM

"An independent voice." Ha Ha ha ha ha ha ha."
Independent as in, "The government pays for my expenses, I in turn bash the government in power until the power that rules is what I so desire!!"
I do however believe that Saskatchewan got the shaft. The 6:00 PM news with Costa M. is enlightening and reliable. On a provincial scale, CBC-Radio-Canada is OK. Nationally, it sucks!!

What? Huh? I was napping. If you could clarify your question I might be able to help you formulate something coherent and we could post it to SDA.

Posted by: PiperPaul at May 10, 2008 12:52 PM

Maybe i missed the news, but isn't CBC still on strike ?

Not that I would notice if they weren't :)

Posted by: Fred at May 10, 2008 1:17 PM

I wrote to Jim to congratulate him on Shaws decision, and encouraged him to do more of the same.

SOCIALISM MEET CAPITALISM
This is the best description so far,

Capitalism is the uneven distribution of wealth and socialism is the equal distribution of misery

old but true.

Posted by: Western Canadian at May 10, 2008 1:48 PM

I also like the "without warning" part.

As the siren blares: "Run, run for the CBC bunkers, programming choice is coming!!"

Posted by: biff at May 10, 2008 1:54 PM

My e-mail to Star Choice ....

On the matter of removing CBC from the channel lineup>

I congratulate you for recognizing the fact that this taxpayer subsidized failure does not have any value in the consumer market.

As a person who resents the existence of the State operated propaganda machine I applaud that you have hammered a nail in the coffin of CBC!
Thank You

Posted by: OMMAG at May 10, 2008 2:13 PM

With the advent of all digital TV one of the things that the carriers will be doing is using the immediate and always up to date REAL data that shows what IS and IS NOT being watched.

Crap channels that are not getting the viewers will be canceled from the lineup.

The ONLY way that the CBC is going to stay in business in this environment is if the federal government MANDATES that they be carried.

Care to take bets on what will happen??

Posted by: OMMAG at May 10, 2008 2:20 PM

Maybe Star Choice can use the available channel to replace CBC Regina with a more honest network ... Al-Jazeera.

Posted by: set you free at May 10, 2008 2:57 PM

Not having to pay twice for CBC - priceless.

Fixed?

Posted by: KS at May 10, 2008 2:57 PM

Re cbc gets dumped in Sask Happy Mothers Day mother corp.I will really be truly happy when the axe falls on cbc in toto.Hope pansbridge etal don,t qualify for welfare.God ain't capitalism grand.

ommag asks

you can bet on it happening. no odds there.

Posted by: spike at May 10, 2008 4:12 PM

Why should Star Choice be forced to carry the Liberal Party of Canada's promotional network?

Wouldn't that set a dangerous precedent?

Posted by: EBD at May 10, 2008 4:27 PM

Shaw set some nice comfy furs ablaze. Is Blazing Cat Fur involved? Where is Peta?

Posted by: Jema54 at May 10, 2008 5:30 PM

Please e-mail Shaw and support their decision. It should happen across Canada.

Posted by: MJH at May 10, 2008 6:13 PM

We must pay for CBC, but we are not obliged to watch it. This is what passes for "freedom" in Canada.

Posted by: Richard Ball at May 10, 2008 7:21 PM

"Canadians should have more choice and access to Canadian content,"

I did not know Michael Moore's Fahreinheit-9/11 was Canadian content?!

it used to be on high rotation on CBC, it probably aired many dozen times in the last few years.

I know I know,

The comrades at the CBC consider anti-Americanism a Canadian value,

...to them anything anti-USA is Canadian content...

Posted by: Friend of USA at May 10, 2008 7:24 PM

What does CBC TV cost each year and what alternatives could be used for the money? Wiki says the budget is $616 million. Any thoughts on what we could spend this money on?

Posted by: Tim Horton at May 10, 2008 7:42 PM

E-mail sent to Shaw with congrats, and e-mail sent to Kylie @ CBC Sakatchewan inviting him to have a reality check, in so many words.

sell cbc to newscorp (fox)

give me my tax money back

Posted by: brian at May 10, 2008 10:33 PM

Well............

Guess that is one less station thatr I have to worry about my kid watching.

For a "public" broadcaster, some of the crap they put on there..........well........let me just say I wouldn't let the kid watch CBC unless I was there.

They'd have some 450 lb dyke telling everyone about the birds and the bees

Do you think this was the kind of complaint the CBC was hoping for??

"I have become aware of CBC's attempts to have you change you decision regarding carrying CBC Regina.
They would like me to complain about this.

I would like to encourage you to only carry channels which are supported by viewer interest.

I rarely find myself even looking to see what is on any of the CBC channels because they rarely carry anything worth watching.

The only way this will change is if the CBC starts recognizing that their programming is out of touch and out of date.

Your actions may be the first step towards getting them to recognize this reality.

Thank you.

Posted by: Brent at May 11, 2008 12:49 AM

Tim Horton; I think the entire cbc budget should be directed to the Armed Forces, and used explicitly for hardcore taliban/jihadi- killing hardware. GPS guided artillery shells, maybe a squadron of A-10's, a few AC-130 gunships.

Posted by: JimN at May 11, 2008 12:56 AM

JimN, you're onto something. I'll second that. Canadian Forces with 3 A-10's and a couple of AC-130 Gunships....and all by diverting MotherCorp's budget. Has a nice ring to it.
The ONLY way that the CBC is going to stay in business in this environment is if the federal government MANDATES that they be carried.
OMMAG,
That has always been the case. The CRTC hearing last year reveled that CBC has never had better than a 17% share. They now have a 5% share and consider that they are the voice of Canada. The bobble heads are stuck on stupid.

The CRTC Toads buy that shit because they represent the Industry, not consumers or taxpayers. Nobody in the Industry is complaining about the incompetence of CBC, and why should they? The CBC becomes the employment "Swamp" for dead losers & incompetence.. How can a Network LOSE 1.3 B in a business that should net 1.3 B

The CBC should be re-assigned to spectrum & delivery oversight, including satellite.

That would leave the Production content to those that respond to market forces, including public service access.

Posted by: Phillip G. Shaw at May 11, 2008 10:00 AM

JimN, helicopters and an updated Avro Arrow for the 21st century. The A-10 is a fine aircraft, but the state of the art has advanced since then. We can do better, and we should damn well do it here in CanaDUH. Let the world buy OUR stuff for a change, eh?

Its my (somewhat) informed opinion that the A-10 is massive overkill for terrorist hunting in the 'Stan and other such places. What we need is not a multi-zillion dollar aircraft that goes Mach 2 and has gold plated everything. More like a Hawker Typhoon with a turboprop in it. Something that can loiter around all day long and carry a buttload of ammunition.

The Canadian aircraft industry could easily crank out hundreds of such airplanes, and they would be perfect for our forces infantry support.

No bids from Bombardier please. ~:D

Posted by: The Phantom at May 11, 2008 10:10 AM

This is also a smart decision from a bandwidth perspective: the main advantage to having all the national CBCs available on satellite is for time shifting so I won't miss Just For Laughs: Gags.

With SK out of the lineup, there is still redundancy from the east or west depending on the status of daylight savings time.

Now all that's left is to dump CBC Toronto for CBC Ottawa for the same reason....

Posted by: Doogie at May 11, 2008 10:12 AM

Phantom: Absolutely no bids from Bombardier. We have to accept that in any new conflict our forces will have to operate under U.S. air supremacy. So, no mach 2 gold plate required. Tha A-10 is older, and maybe not state of the art anymore, but the "C" model upgrade brings it into the 21st century, and no other craft in it's role is as proven as it is. Build it under license, and apply our expertise to ugrading it more, as we did to the F-86's in the day. Orenda engined, Canadian A-10's, oh yeah!
