City Of Hope And Change

Chicago requires registration of all firearms.

But obviously because they're ineffective, none of those gun laws are COMMON-SENSE gun laws, so, they need to enact even more.

But don't get rid of the old ones that don't work, just because, they MIGHT work.

Sweet Home Chicago..............

(Sorry about the editing confusion. I decided the post could be tighter.)

I think drawing and quartering of gang members might work or at least pull in good TV ratings.

We just need stronger drawing and quartering laws. Maybe a tractor pull,

Johnny Jones was a member of the east side thugs and they are revvving the engines.

VRROOOOMMMMMM!

Contrast the response of the citizens of Coffeyville to the predations of the Dalton Gang.

Posted by: DrD at April 21, 2008 10:44 AM

And .... all criminals in Chicago are required to surrender and confess within the next seven days.

And .... no one will be allowed to run with scissors from now on.

And .... covering your mouth when coughing is now mandatory.

Chicago will soon be America's safest and healthiest city. Good plan their Chicago and good luck with that.

You people are such neanderthals! Clearly if the police were to raid every single farm in Saskatchewan and take their guns and throw the gun owners in prison ALL the gun crimes in Toronto would be prevented! Gang bangers are just misunderstood! Read the scientific consensus people! *sarcasm*

Posted by: Trent at April 21, 2008 11:16 AM

I'll say it again (with sarcasm):

Just enact a law to ban all criminals! All problems solved!

Posted by: Finn at April 21, 2008 11:25 AM

Taking action on crime costs money that politicos need to buy votes with "social programs". Posturing is almost free!

I watch WGN all the time for the Tom Skilling weather reports and the neat informative graphics on their blog.

An even bigger tragedy not mentioned in the article is the sad fact that over 20 kids have been killed in the Chicago school system this school year alone.

About 20 shot to death and several stabbed to death in the SCHOOLS.

Hey, isn't Chicago Toronto's twin city?

A buyer is required to show his Firearms Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) when purchasing any firearms or ammunition. Any seller is required to withhold delivery of any handgun for 72 hours, and of any rifle or shotgun for 24 hours, after the buyer and seller reach an agreement to purchase a firearm.

I wonder how many gang-bangers are FOID card carriers?

I sense a business opportunity in Chicago!
Don't suppose there's any illegal gun dealers there yet do you ??

Posted by: OMMAG at April 21, 2008 11:51 AM

One of the best analogies regarding gun control goes something like this.

When I sit on my porch with my dog at my feet, I often hear other dogs barking in the distance. In an effort to put a stop to it, whenever I hear another dog bark, I kick my dog. It hasn’t stopped the other dogs barking but I’m sure if I do it long enough it will help. I mean, we all have to do our part.

A few years back a relative in Chicago died who believed all guns should be passed down through the male members of the family.

As the guns were willed to me, we went up and got them and then had to sneak out of the city of Chicago where presumably there would have been legal trouble had we been stopped.

(There were some neat guns in there too, a semi-automatic 12-gauge, a .308 Beretta, and an assault rifle.)

The rest of Illinois is much more reasonable about firearms ownership.

It's like that with New York City too. The city has very stringent firearms requirements, and yet upstate New York is kind of rural with a lot of hunting.

One town in the Chicago area called Morton Grove once enacted a regulation that said there could be no firearm existing in Morton Grove outside of law enforement. So some other small town, I've forgotten which, enacted a law that insisted that every household in the city had to have a firearm in it. I know where I would have preferred living.

Incidentally, there is an argument going on before the Supreme Court that could be very benevolent for firearms owners. It would assert that gun ownership is in fact an individual right, and that is what the framers intended. (As of course they did.) As opposed to a liberal take that firearms are only legal for a state-supported militia.

We're expecting to win this one.

So THATS why there are less gun crimes in Chicago, you have to register your gun. Makes sense now.

Horny Toad

Posted by: Horny Toad at April 21, 2008 12:59 PM

I consider that good gun control means being able to consistently hit your target. Anything less is just target practice.

What the libs call gun control is actually simply just a "shun" (sic). Legislation, registration, then confiscation.

Whoops! Double tap...

Sorry.

Every automobile in North America is registered,
and criminals still cars everyday anyway.

Somehow in the head of liberals this means registration works...

Posted by: Friend of USA at April 21, 2008 1:15 PM

still = steal of course!...

Posted by: Friend of USA at April 21, 2008 1:18 PM

Where's Wendy Cukier? Obviously we need more gun control in Chicago!!

Gun control go up, gun crime go down.

It's self-evident

Posted by: OttRob at April 21, 2008 1:19 PM

You're nuts to register a firearm.

The liberals have made it clear that they want to take ALL our guns away. If you have any unregistered guns lying around, it might be a good idea to keep it that way.

Posted by: Jim at April 21, 2008 1:22 PM

Rather than passing a law requiring guns to be registered, why not simply pass a law making it illegal to shoot people?

Posted by: DrD at April 21, 2008 1:25 PM

Of course you've heard of the joke that has been circulating for a while that attempts to explain the difference between Democrats, Republicans, and Southern Republicans. Ha!

Posted by: Orlin at April 21, 2008 2:42 PM

rockyt...when I was stuck in Toronto for what seemed an eternity I often heard that comparison.Having been to Chicago many times I can see why people would compare Toronto with Chicago, they are alike, cept Chicago's cleaner.

Greg in Dallas,
I watched the SC argument.. Very interesting in that the Justices where discussing old English common law with regard to a "RIGHT". IMO the individual Right to keep and bear Arms will be held 7-2 (even Ruth G seemed on side) Judgement in June

The Trigger Lock restriction will be found unconstitutional 5-4, Self defence issue.

The Military rapid fire may go either way; they are the militia’s weapons of choice

Machine Guns will not be constitutional, I know a guy in Alabama that has three... he is one scary dude.(he is a rabid liberal)

I only hope it keeps "Civil" lawyers away from lawful gun owners... You Canadians signed a registration Form requiring "Safe Storage", if your gun is stolen and used in a crime.. lookout.

Bloomer, in NYC, will need to find a new cause

I don't mind gun registration as long as I can carry it anywhere, and I mean anywhere like for example bear country. Castle doctrine at least in rural areas would be helpful too. The state monopoly on violence is (increasingly) an illusion; if in addition to police citizens would be able to protect themselves, that would be - I guess - public/private partnership.

Posted by: xiat at April 21, 2008 3:53 PM

Actually ryan I'm pretty sure that the twin city thingy is an official standing between the 2 cities.

But maybe not after this last weekend.

Posted by: rockyt at April 21, 2008 4:12 PM

When you look at the homicide stats from the US, you will realize that the majority come from about 7 areas. All of those areas have tight gun control. Elsewhere the criminals are actually more afraid of the citizens than the cops.

32 dead in a weekend eh? Forgot all about American city murder rates. Few years back we got the local news from Detroit, it replaced a N. Dakota channel. Every night, a killing or two, safe bet 9 out of 10 times a non white person was killed/involved. Heck come "Hell Night" I would tune in to see how much of Detroit was burned. Eventually the local cable subscribers got Shaw to go back to the N. Dakota channel. Now the killings I hear about is Winnipeg's unless I tune in CBC then it's about Toronto.

hey CHICAGO is called the WINDY CITY becuase its run by a whole bunch of liberal demacratic windbags and the name comedf rom a indian word meaning BAD SMELL and nothing has changed chicago is still as corupt as its always been run by the demacrook party

Posted by: Spurwing Plover at April 21, 2008 5:12 PM

In Canada I have no problem with gun registration IF it is under provincial jurisdiction (property registration). My problem is how the federal government over stepped its jurisdiction when the LIEberals called it a “crime” bill. If Torontards want to give up their ability to protect their families from an oppressive body, more power to you.

(I in no way intend to insult any retarded people or children born in T.O.)

Posted by: Play'nWitYoMomma at April 21, 2008 5:17 PM

Play:

Are you saying Torontonians should be protected from the Ontario Human Rights Commission?

Welcome aboard, brother.

Chicago also has one of the most comprehensive databases of homicides available from 1965-1995 (all 23817 of them). This data is for both perpetrators and victims and, most usefully, has the area of the city that the homicide occurred and the race of murderer/victim.

I started analyzing this database about 1996 and ran into problems as the files are big and I was using my MacII which I had just upgraded to a whopping 8 Mb of RAM. My stats programs choked on the data and I had to write custom programs to peruse the dataset. What I was able to find out before I had to get around to doing things that I had neglected for too long was that:
(1) most of the murderers and victims were young black men (AKA as "children" in the gun-banners lexicon)
(2) Most of the homicides occurred in very limited geographic areas.
(3) If you excluded blacks and certain areas of Chicago from the analysis, the homicide rate of the remaining parts of the city was lower than in many Canadian cities.

The nice thing about US crime statistics is that they are not afraid to include the race of perpetrators/victims which one has to really dig for when one looks at Canadian data. Also, the data is available online for free unlike the Canadian data which must be purchased at exorbitant cost.

Registration of firearms has done nothing in this case because the individuals who are misusing firearms are usually not eligeable to possess guns because of their criminal records. Instead of pursuing firearms control, there should be more research for why young black men are far more likely to resort to lethal violence than young white men.

I don't for a ny second think the good folks of Chi town, at least the sane ones. Will give up there guns. Like in Alberta they will just wrap em up & dig a hole in the back yard. Plus add a significant amount of powder with them.

32 gang bangers in one weekend? A thinking man would call that progress. Shame about any bystanders, but gang bangers can't shoot for sour apples.

Added bonus, another opportunity to enact new gun control.

Once upon a time I used to thing gun control was a policy of the stupid. After a while I realized its much worse than that.

1) It is easier and more profitable to oppress people who have property. Gun laws only affect the law abiding people, because only the law abiding have anything the government can TAKE.

2) It is more profitable to pass laws which punish your political opponents. Criminals and other lowlife vote DemocRat when they vote at all. Gun owners are uniformly Republican, except in the odd place where the Democrat guy is pro-gun.

3) If you are -serious- about increasing your power, it means you have to defang the public. Because sooner or later the people will rise up, and it is much harder to put down an armed mob than an unarmed mob.

Doubters will please turn their attention to Tibet and Burma for elucidation.

Chicago is Chicago because it's ran by a dick...daley. The city has been ran by the present dick and his old man, dick Sr nearly non stop since 1955. As a lifelong Illinoisan, I will not go to Chicago or Cook County except to pass through. I will not go to any sporting events, cultural events or even dine in that cesspool by the lake until dick is where he belongs, behind bars. Dick gets enough of my $$$ from his pet monkey in the governors mansion.
Those "school children" shot were not choir boys or National Merit Scholars. "Gang bangers" is what the rest of the world calls them.
BTW, the new 'reform' police chief of Chicago noted in a press conference last night that the same weekend in 2006 and 2007 matched this past weekend for shootings. Nothing new for the city ran by a dick...daley.
Outlaw the outlawed guns!!! Yeah, that'll change things.
