I thought they stopped harvesting seal pups ages ago. Have I misunderstood, or is IFAW simply lying when they talk about slaughtering "baby" seals?

Posted by: Darrell at April 21, 2008 9:49 AM

I guess I missed that ad as I was driving my baby seal upholstered car to work today. The seats are soooo soft.

Posted by: Jaybird at April 21, 2008 9:53 AM

The seats are soft AND they taste like chicken!

Posted by: Eskimo at April 21, 2008 9:59 AM

I ♣ baby seals.

Posted by: BillyHW at April 21, 2008 10:15 AM

All baby animals are cute, maybe even baby vegetables are cute, or baby tofu, I don't care.

And if the bus is late, and I get in s*** at work, I DO care. Like most people today, I am entirely self absorbed, so don't bug me about baby seals.

And if Newfoundlanders some day decide to club baby humans, then I shall E-mail my MP, like any good citizen.;-)

Posted by: dmorris at April 21, 2008 10:20 AM

*sigh*. If someone put up the same poster of a human fetus with abortion stats - they would probably get hauled before an HRC.

Why are baby seals more important?

Posted by: Elizabeth at April 21, 2008 10:20 AM

"ban the hakipic"...all seals should be dispatched by rifle...then there will be no photoplay emotionalism these anti-sealing con artists can exploit for donations from the emotional basket cases who donate to fraud artists like the IFAW.

Ahhh, what a cute seal pup.
Here comes the ugly bus!!

Posted by: Lori at April 21, 2008 10:50 AM

The people of Vancouver should be up in arms about the sea turtles inadvertantly killed when fishing for tuna. Or the tuna themselves, on the edge of being endangered. I no longer buy tuna, for both reasons. But I can't wait to buy my sealskin pelt. And mukluks.

Posted by: wendy.g at April 21, 2008 11:14 AM

I was in Nelson, BC last year and saw a poster for a band that was playing at the local hotel that evening. I can't recall the band's name, but it had something to do with a seal, and the picture showed a cute baby seal photoshopped wearing a rastafarian-type hat. The tag line on the poster was "Let's Go Clubbin'" I tried to get a copy of the poster, but the hotel had run out from all the requests.

One more joke:

A baby seal walks into a bar, and the bartender asks, "What'll it be?"

The seal replies, "Anything but a Canadian Club."

Posted by: Doogie at April 21, 2008 11:32 AM

I find that ad offensive and it makes me angry! SOMEONE has hate flowing through their veins. Who can I complain to?

Posted by: Orlin at April 21, 2008 11:33 AM

I agree. Getting angry about the clubbing of baby seals is not worth it since the seals are on the East Coast on ice flows and well, we are here where the buses are.

I suggest the being angry at the bus driver and or the transit authority can lead to better service if you lobby them properly. So being angry for the right reasons makes sense.

Being late for work is the right reason. Feeling bad about baby seals is pointless and futile.

Posted by: John V at April 21, 2008 11:43 AM

EUROPEAN INFLUENCE!!Today they're going to ban the seal hunt, tomorrow they're going to abort the next Albert Einstein. Logic is in dire straits. I thought the human race was at the top of the food chain. Guess I was wrong. When the "Euros" run out of food, and cannibalism is running rampant in the streets of Paris, we Canucks will still enjoy "Whole Saskatchewan Wheat" cereal for breakfast, cold bison sandwiches for lunch, and elk steaks for supper. The Euros can chew on their placards!!

The transit authorities of several Canadian cities this year have pulled pro-life ads due to complaints.

The ads read:

"9 months. The length of time an abortion is allowed in Canada.

abortion
Have we gone to far?"

The ads contain no graphic content, but a picture of a pregnant women.

I was in downtown Vancouver yesterday, too. As a matter of fact, standing at one of those bus shelters.

Only the advert on this one showed a guy holding a cell phone, with the tagline saying, "You've lost your signal? Get angry..." yadda, yadda.

Meanwhile, across the street, in front of the Van. Art Gallery, 500 stoners and 9/11 Troofers were firing up their doobies and bongs to celebrate "4/20" with not a cop in sight.

Vancouver. It's not a city, it's a... I don't know what, exactly.

Enough with the seals already, the REAL tragedy in Canada is Baby Oil. That's right..babies, harvested for their oil and not a word out of MSM or the entire blogosphere. Do you realize how many babies you have to press to get a pint of baby oil? Have you no humanity? Call or write your MP - TODAY !

Posted by: PGS at April 21, 2008 1:53 PM

What about the Chinese Communists who harvest organs from live Falun Gong practitioners? Are seals more human to the "progressive" movement than the Falun Gong and others deemed inconvenient to the agenda of the Chinese Communist Party?

We needn't listen to the anti-sealing crowd. They're not making anywhere near as big a stink over the human organ harvesting happening in Communist China. And they call themselves secular "humanists"??? They're not humanists; they're anti-humanists disguised as humanists. This cannot be denied; the proof is right there for all to see.

What about the holocaust against the Falun Gong in China? Don't "progressives" care? Apparently not; they seem to think that non-humans are more worthy of life than humans, whether they're already born or not yet born.

Just to say I got very close to sending in some pix myself but was too busy. They're all over Vancouver, and weirdly for progressive Vancouver, usually graffiti free.
And with each poster I'm thinking "but I don't get ANGRY over small stuff like that". And the attempt to emotionalize with the "baby" word! There's a whole series of anger triggers in the ad series: one is, ..."And they don't have your size".

Vancouver is NUTS. If you ever get a chance, tune into Co-op radio for a few minutes.

At the centre of hippieville (4th and Vine) was at the Capers/Whole Foods outlet lining up to pay for my soup/salad. Currently watching my diet. The guy next to me had a "Power Muffin". I told him, "man I love those power muffins ... when I have one I feel like I can take on the world" to which he replied, "in a socially responsible way, I hope". I looked hard and saw no trace of irony!

Nobody cares for the baby calves here in snowy Alberta like they do for a seal on the east coast. We eat cattle all the time for food but not seals, and us ranchers are taking a beating at sale time on the price of beef. On Saturday I came across a new calve in dire pain with its shoulder having been eaten out by coyotes, I had to put a bullet through its brain to stop the suffering but I thought who gives a .... about this, nobody, but we have all sorts of morons running around stopping coyote hunters and bear hunters and seal hunters but they are to stupid to see the results of to many of one thing is not good for everything. Oh and over at the all liberal all the time National Newswatch looks like the Toronto Star is having an orgasm over an alleged 40,000 small change compared to 40 MILLION you theiving liberals stole from taxpayers.

This very annoying bus shelter ad has been up for over a month and I'm glad that finally someone decided to make a small alteration. I'm still in Vancouver for a few days more and will check the status of more of these annoying ads later today as they seem to be concentrated on Burrard and Robson streets which isn't far from where I'm staying.

Just to say, observant Christians, social conservatives, and pro-lifers have been treated with this kind of disdain and lack of tolerance for DECADES. However, it's nice to have reinforcements.

And let's remember that nearly THREE MILLION pre-born "babies" have been aborted--and at taxpayer expense--for nearly four decades. When the "greenies" come knocking at my door, I alwyas politely decline to contribute and point out the human slaughter they ignore, right in our midst. Who Loves Baby-Seal Kabobs?

Best article I've ever read about the "morality" of the seal hunt and the hypocrisy of the objectors.

Excerpt:
"More specifically, is some sort of moral or humane line being crossed with the seals that isn't really crossed with, say, the slaughter of ducks? Is it the primitive, barbaric technique of the seal killings that get to us? Or the stunning baby-seal cuteness? Is it the fact that most harp seals are helpless babies and that we're chemically hardwired to want to protect innocent defenseless infants? Is this the overarching message? Take the cows, but don't slaughter swooning cuteness?"

Posted by: Minnie at April 21, 2008 6:33 PM

Imagine the mental strain that we could cause leftists by claiming that we harvest the CO2-producing seals for stem cell research.

Posted by: Dave at April 21, 2008 6:44 PM

Seen today in the Medical Post: Greek researchers studying baby seal heart valves and they are getting a few hundred supplied from the seal hunt. Apparently the seal valves last longer than the pig valves currently used as replacement valves in people. Yet another use for seals. If this proves viable in further testing then IFAW should be overjoyed as we'll now be saving all those cute little pigs.

Posted by: loki at April 21, 2008 6:52 PM

No reason to ban the seal hunt, just cut off the subsidies.
The problem with the seal hunt is the amount of taxpayer subsidies made available for what is a money losing "tradition". In typical Canadian fashion the eastern provinces like Newfoundland get hundreds of millions of dollars from other Canadians to support uneconomic fishing and hunting enterprises. After "the season" is over they all go to the local EI office to start the cheques rolling. And EI is only one of many subsidies. When any government tries to change things by encouraging the younger population to get an education and perhaps go to where a real job is available, the cry babies start claiming their rights are being denied.

Well, atlantic Jim

Back in the 70's when the rest of Canada was trying to get the West to share some of its oil revenue I remember my grandfather saying how all the farmers in Ontario sent food out West during the Depression when the Prairies was a dust bowl.

No reciprocation from these guys.

Posted by: zoilck at April 21, 2008 8:56 PM

zoilick,

my dad and his family in Landis Saskatchewan were one of the recipients of the apples and fish from the Maritimes. One of the reason my grandfather moved the family to the east coast.

Posted by: AtlanticJim at April 21, 2008 9:08 PM

Zoilck -- The rest of Canada was not "trying to get the West to share some if its oil revenue"; it was trying to rob Alberta of its oil revenues -- there's a difference. Furthermore, the rest of Canada was not starving at the time -- it was just greedy. What the federal Liberals did gutted the Alberta energy boom. Alberta habitually pays more than its fair share of taxes into the federal treasury. And I am grateful that it does.

Posted by: Richard Ball at April 21, 2008 9:11 PM

Interesting article in Saturday's National Post about how harbour seals in Vancouver have set up a gauntlet in the Puntledge River, and literally hoover up all the hatchlings released from a fishery just up the river. Just as the moratorium on seal hunts eerily coincided with a drop in east coast fish stocks, the increase in harbour seals has coincided with the drop in salmon stocks on the West coast.

Posted by: KevinB at April 21, 2008 9:21 PM

Posted by: LEDA at April 21, 2008 10:19 PM

Bob Herron

The reason there is a seal hunt is because of the income provided to off season fishermen. This has gone on for hundreds of years. There have never been 'subsidies' as far as I know.

Why would there be subsidies?

If there is, it's because of the explosion in the seal population and a cull is required to protect the fish stocks.

Posted by: LEDA at April 21, 2008 10:37 PM

Albertabuck,

And what wine would you serve?

Posted by: eastern paul at April 21, 2008 11:13 PM

Ah, yes...well I suppose a "Thank You LEDA" is appropriate here, eh?
But, the facts are that the mind set of years(generations) of EI dependance has left a coast of limited expectations. The aggressive advertising of jobs, careers, opportunity for a new life brought many out to the west for their first taste of financial stability. I work with countless good folks from the E-coast, their stories regarding life back there always ring the same bell. A sad cycle of working enough weeks and then going on the dole. Each person only worked enough to get the required weeks in, then went home. Nothing gives back a persons' self worth, more than a good day's work, and a propect for an honest living. Few times have I ever heard E-coasties talk about leaving here after getting their weeks in, although it has happend.
No disrespect to you, but it is what it is.

Posted by: albertabuck at April 21, 2008 11:16 PM

albertabuck

Absolutely true about the UI (before I left it was UIC) scam, an the sad thing it was pushed by the feds - "we are going to create jobs" end up on a LIP grant - been there done that. If you don't know what a LIP grant is - who cares. You heard the story from someone who left. Poor, bored and unemployed.

I left, went to Alberta, BC and now MB.

But don't piss on the people who stayed an made a life like a lot of friends who are productive and doing very well- as well as anyone in Alberta, actually better when you take into account the cost of living.

The problem initially when getting out of school with the East Coast is not what you know and can do, it's who you know. If you know the right people things happen faster and things are pretty good and if you don't but stick it out then you are most likely doing OK too - takes longer. Patience pays.

I got a job in Alberta before they knew who I was. That would not happen down east.

Someone's gotta run the place, they are not all on UIC. There are folks just as productive and creative on the East Coast as anywhere. To suggests otherwise is ignorant - you know that albertabuck.

WOW! All that from an anti seal poster in a city far far away from most who posted. How in hell do you get to Darfur from there? Is there a Bus? Not to mention the abortion issue.

Apples and Buicks.

You have your causes, most of which that I have seen since coming to this fine blog is to oppose anything viewed as "leftard". Sound reasoning is secondary, just cause someone with a half a brain and a much bigger mouth said so, will do.

They are just expressing their Freedom of Speech. So why get your knickers all in a knot? You can spend your nickel to put up a poster expressing an opposing view on the other side of the bus shelter if you want to.

So there are three basic issues that are relevant if one cares to even bother with the issue at all. One is free speech and the second is how much fish an adult seal consumes in a day.

Put this into context with polluted oceans and hugely reduced fish stocks, and the simple answer starts to become clear. Harvesting seals is necessary. The third is it also provides jobs in an area that really needs them.

Well, until the good ship Oil Barge comes in anyway. What's that you say Sheik Danny? You are running a school to teach them Westerners how to negotiate with Oil companies? Kudos Danny!

Posted by: ducktrapper at April 22, 2008 10:56 AM

I recall that pro-life groups had a transit advertising campaign 6 months ago that got numerous complaints for being supposedly 'factually inaccurate'. This resulted in a number of the ads being pulled. Seeing as how baby seals haven't been harvested for over 20 years in Canada, will the transit advertising authorities now pull these ads? Or is consistency only important when it's ideologically convenient?
