World Press Freedom Prize Finalists

Congratulations...

Four Canadian journalists who have stood up to threats to freedom of expression in Canada are the finalists for an annual World Press Freedom prize.

Toronto Star Asia Correspondent Bill Schiller, freelance journalist and author Derek Finkle, reporters Joel-Denis Bellavance and Gilles Toupin of Montreal's La Presse and Maclean's columnist Mark Steyn will be considered for the $2,000 prize, which is awarded each year to the Canadian media worker who, in the view of the jury, has made the most significant contribution to press freedom in this country over the previous 12 months.

The prize will be awarded by the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom at a lunch event marking World Press Freedom Day on Friday, May 2nd at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

(We've put a call in to Barbara Hall.)

"This type of media coverage has been identified as contributing to Islamophobia and promoting societal intolerance towards Muslim, Arab and South Asian Canadians."

Oh, I stand corrected. Thought the " societal intolerance" had something to do with THEIR activities.

Mark Steyn certainly deserves some kind of signal for his work.

Joel-Denis Bellavance always struck me as one of those that stood out, in a positive way, as a journalist who could see more than one side.

I would say they are intolerant of,... cartoons even. my brainwashing just isn't working. Them saying they want to blow you up and take over is your intolerance!

$ 2000 dollars?

Gees, you'd think they'd at least rate a lucy jadewarr whine and sleaze amount.

Cheap bums.

But glad some recognition is going to the right side of things in the awards department, rare these days.

And not that $2,000 isn't a great amount, (esp. to this poor unemployed commenter), but still it seems so ... um, how shall I say? Canadain-ish or out of touch?

I have read nearly all of Mark's columns and his
book and find he is perfectly clear in what he
is thinking and he thinks better than the average
columnist.

Now he is up for a award, how funny. The link goes
to a Paul at Macleans and he is not giving out
any happy thoughts on Mark winning anything.

How really mixed up our world is, when it comes
to the truth.

I prefer the clear truth Mark writes and wish
daily more people would see what is happening.

More are, but the liberals are still strong
in their lack of any courage or integrity in
this problem.

He is just up for the award right now and I
do not think he will win...but you never know.

Journalists didn't care a whit about the HRCs' oppressive actions against marginalized evangelical Christians -- only when the HRCs threatened journalists and journalism did it suddenly become an issue worth even talking about.

Shame!

Hall racially profiles/singles out "Asian-Canadian anglers"; yet, Hall tells others to "avoid racial profiling".
Hall tells others to be "cautious not to perpetuate stereotypes,"; yet, does the very thing she warns against, i.e., perpetuates "stereotypes".
The left-socialist Hall is a racial profiler/stereotyper herself.
...-

"Avoid racial profiling, Hall urges Westport

The continuing discussion about illegal fishing in the Westport area should not resort to racial profiling of Asian-Canadian anglers, Ontario's human rights commissioner warned Wednesday."

"But while agreeing it is important to discuss issues regarding fishing regulations, those discussions should not turn into "a form of racial profiling" that singles out Asian-Canadians as more likely to break the law, said Hall.

""We need to be cautious not to perpetuate stereotypes," Hall said in a telephone interview from Toronto."

Freedom of the press is not guaranteed in Canada.

If the world Press freedom of expression definition means to actually get in the front line trenches and the courts fighting the free speech haters, Steyn's a lock.

The New Mandate of the Ontario Human Rights Commission
When the Human Rights Code Amendment Act, 2006 comes into effect on June 30, 2008, there will be a number of significant changes in the mandate of the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

Under the new Act, the role of the OHRC in preventing discrimination and promoting and advancing human rights in Ontario will be strengthened. The OHRC will expand its work in promoting a culture of human rights in the province. We will have the power to conduct public inquiries, initiate our own applications (formerly called ‘complaints’), or intervene in proceedings at the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO)....

The OHRC has also been given broad inquiry powers....

Our powers to review legislation and policies, for example will be very broad....

Having reviewed the OHRC's pronouncements, it would appear that Islam has been tacitly defined as a "race". I'd be curious to know the OHRC's (or any other lefty's for that matter) definition of "race" -- preferably something legally binding.

Hope the award holds more value than the monetary amount!
Mark Steyn is an obvious choice but Joel-Denis Bellavance is also a standout,a very impressive journalist.

Islam is a race? The lengths these commissars will go to define something they can go after is stunning. Time to abolish all such Kangaroo Courts, they don't belong in any free society.

In Harper's Canada,

He and his so called conservatives still sit with their fingers up their arses and their brains in neutral.

Doesn't he and them realise that these kangaroo courts of kanada are now taking front stage, along with the resentment of the taxing of income trusts.

Show me ONE truly quaranteed right? Thanks Turdeau.
