A stunned Germany awakens to a shocking truth - predators like to kill stuff for fun.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine news website reports that Knut "senselessly murdered the carp", fishing them out, playing with them and then leaving the remains.
(Think of the wisdom that could be bestowed upon the world if only every citizen was required to raise a flock of 50 chickens in weasel country before being declared an adult?)
Posted by Kate at April 10, 2008 8:24 AMFishermen the world over will be aghast to learn that they've been murdering fish all these years. And lets not forget those poor worms.
THE BASTARDS!!!!!!
NeilD
Actually Kate, domesticated pets such as dogs will do the same thing when they have escaped their owners and start running in packs. When they run freely they will go out and kill just about anything they can run down. Unlike their cousins the coyote or wolf.
Posted by: Shawn at April 10, 2008 9:56 AMIt's an ample demonstration of how environuts have deluded themselves by anthropomorphizing non-human animals.
Polar bears are carnivores. They possess a keen instinct to hunt and kill animals and eat their flesh. They do not rationalize when or how they kill; they see the food source, kill and eat it.
The bigger question is what leads people to anthropomorphize non-human kinds.
Posted by: mark peters at April 10, 2008 9:58 AMMy only surprise about this crap is that knut isn't in Toronto. I'm going fishing in Alaska anyway, far away from tree huggers and those
racist people at the OHRC.
Woah! Newsflash people! I wonder what will happen to these poor sensitive souls, when they see their beloved pussy cat catching a mouse and playing with it before killing it. Cats love doing that.
Posted by: Da Wife at April 10, 2008 10:00 AMI have seen rabbits pounce on and destroy carrots and celery. where is the outcry? celery are living things.
and now vegetarians are killing millions of "good bacteria" scoffing down loads of yogurt. even beer has remnent live yeast , those that havent been killed by that cruel baking process invented by Mssr. Pasteur.
the horror , the horror!
Other than the whole ‘murdered’ thing is ridiculous, these people that went to school for a long time, think it seems, that a grown polar bear should remain warm and cuddly as when it was a cub. It may come as complete and unexpected surprise that polar bears kill things, natural born killers if you will.
That the bear killed the fish and did not eat them, maybe a sign of a welfare mind. Perhaps I nature they kill things and come back later to eat them, if not, then its definitely caused by freeloading.
This is a perfect example of how liberal ideas are continually undermined by reality: if we treat the polar bear like a cuddly domesticated pet, he'll behave like one. To this can be added:
* If we build basketball courts, we'll keep kids from getting into drugs and gangs crime
* If we flood welfare recipients with government services and easy-money, they'll turn into productive citizens
* If we are nice to terrorist-types, and appeasing to their religion, they won't attack us
etc.
Conservatives have the facts of life on their side.
Posted by: Richard Ball at April 10, 2008 10:12 AMEven if they have never watched an episode of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, you would think that people would realize that predators have to practice and hone their hunting skills lest they starve to death. Either that or the carp were making fun of Knut because he is not a cute cub anymore but an ugly killer. Personally, I wonder why this particular zoo resident has garnered so much press coverage.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at April 10, 2008 10:17 AMSo let me get this straight:
1) Mama Polar Bear rejects cub and Zoo decides to hand-raise - environut lefties complain that nature should be left to its own course, i,e. cute cubbie dies of starvation (nice!)
2) Cute cubbie naturally becomes a killer, and environut lefties complain that it shouldn't be allowed to do what comes naturally.
No wonder most lefties are head-cases, if you spun around on almost everything you said it would scramble your brain as well.
I keep thinking "brilliant satire" and look for the Monty Python credits - then I realize these people are serious.

Yes, if there are any studies on this, I'd like to read them, anyone?
Enjoy your fishing trip to Alaska, mel, and don't worry about the Grizzlies, apparently they wouldn't hurt a fly. ;-)
Posted by: dmorris at April 10, 2008 10:28 AMWith regard to Warman. I think there might be mileage in trying to get him declared a 'vexatious litigant'. Ask your lawyers.
Posted by: Jones at April 10, 2008 10:47 AMMy dog killed a squirrel once, and he didn't eat it either. Should I report him to the police?
Posted by: Ellie in T.O. at April 10, 2008 10:51 AMWhat's -really- scary is that these same people going on about the poor polar bears and the poor defenseless carp don't give a rat's ass about human beings in their own country. Put a dead kid on the front page, nobody cares. Put a dead dog on the front page, stand well back and watch the outrage.
Remember the wave of disgust when it was discovered that Al Queerda was testing poison gas on dogs? Compare with beheadings live on video, they got barely a ripple.
Bambi and Thumper. Makes a nice stew with some wild onions. Knut would look good as a rug on my living room floor too. Fluffy!
Gotta tell you though Kate, for inappropriate anthropomorphizing you can't beat Toy Story. Toys are alive and have feelings? That's creepy as hell.

the point of the story is that he finally caught a rat one day and ate it...i called him back and he just ignored me kept running further off to throw it in the air then chaw down....
he learned that shit off'n me i reckon....i allus says..."shorty" i said,"when you KNOW yer enemy you don't let up till yer pissing on their grave."
which is where we're at wif de CHRC and Vermin and Wermin super K......
Posted by: john begley at April 10, 2008 12:17 PMI don't even find this funny.
I just find it aggravating that people this stupid are allowed to vote.
These are the idiots who have turned out once-great society into declining has-been nation on its way down. Thanks for nothing leftards.
Next time you leftards see a bear or other predator in the wild, give him a hug for me, will ya? They could use the protein and we could use your absence.

Posted by: The Phantom at April 10, 2008 12:46 PMPhantom,
Come on now! You shouldn't support killing seagulls.
Seagulls are much cheaper than janitors - they aren't unionized! Ever seen what a flock of s**t-hawks can do to clean up the garbage on a beach?
Seagulls are flying carp. They eat anything.
Posted by: Warwick at April 10, 2008 12:49 PMI always get a kick out of leftards getting possessive about animals!
I share my home with a little white furred killing machine named Buddy who brings home a steady stream of decapitated fowl and rodent carcases from spring till winter starts .... he's just getting warmed up for the annual hunting season right now....
Love when a neighbour comes over to complain that MY cat is killing His / Her bunnies and birds and Oh! horror! .... the squirrels.
I tell em' to go watch "The Lion King" and offer that if they want they can try to capture Buddy and Re-educate him!
Frikin' tools...............
This story reminds me about a caller on the J.Gorm. show, I believe the topic was licensing cats. I will never forget the old lady who called in and claimed that the neighbors cat has murdered the baby birds nesting in her yard.
It appears that S.Colbert was right about bears after all. I will forward this link to him, perhaps he can do something about this menace.
Bears eat fish who would'a thunk it?
Posted by: DDT at April 10, 2008 1:38 PMhow about i call warman an ass hole. he can now search and find me and sue me. unfortunately for warman it will or would never see a court.
Posted by: old white guy at April 10, 2008 1:38 PMHey, Old dude
It's a lot harder for Wormin to find you to sue when you post your comment on the wrong threat...
;)
Posted by: Warwick at April 10, 2008 1:51 PMMy mother always warned me about "people who live in glass houses etc etc etc" and here I now sit reading my fellow bloggers criticizing the expressed German opinion of Knute "senselessly murdering the innocent carp". Who are we to criticize their comments which are based, I suppose, on their expert knowledge of slaughtering innocents?

Posted by: DrD at April 10, 2008 4:21 PMRed squirrels, Warwick.
I have one(1) of the little hyper kinetic bastards here at Chez Phantom. He stored away about a cubic yard of walnuts in the fall. I keep finding them in odd places, like the open hub carrier of my truck when I was fixing it. Went out to put the universal joint back in one morning, there's a frickin' walnut sitting in there.
Rear brake drum is another hiding spot. Reverse..[screeeeeek-CRUNCH]... panicked search... holy crap I broke an axle... nope, walnut.
Now that the 4 feet of snow is almost gone, I discovered about a cubic yard of empty walnut shells leaching tannin into my lawn.
Red. Squirrels. God help me if this one breeds. They'll eat the house.
Posted by: The Phantom at April 10, 2008 7:21 PMUnreal.
These idiots. What'd they expect? Him to be a vegetarian and play nice with those killer claws and teeth?
And;
He's bored.
Or perhaps the carp taste like crap to him, send him some seals or peta members to play with.
... send him some seals or ...
... as Kate has already stated this I am repeating, but still it is the right thing to do, after all it's his culture no?
Heritage?
Instinct.
No wonder the left doesn't recognize that trait.
I easily tire of the nonstop generic leftbashing that goes on here, but I have to say on this topic I've no choice but to join in.
I've been making this argument about the truly ignorant at PETA for a few years now.
Every single second of every single day and night billions of creatures, ranging from insect to human, die excrutiatingly horrible deaths being eaten alive by another living creature. That is nature....that is the way it has always been and will always be.
Enter the afore-mentioned leftards.
This is a primo example of the chasm that exists between the politically correct left's idea of reality and the simplest facts of life.
To utter warm fuzzy words that make everyone feel they're really a good and caring person is the left's way.The fact it is unworkable or unreasonable matters not.It permeates their reasoning and is clearly evident in their politics, politically correct bigotries and neverending attempts at social engineering.
I submit that if Col. Sanders himself had tortured every fifth chicken before it was slaughtered,he'd still be four times more compassionate to animals than dear ol' Mother Nature herself.
Thank you Kate for the space to rant a little.
Posted by: Canadian Observer at April 10, 2008 9:42 PMknut wuz killing carp U say
for a moment I thought that said crap, and there's a lot of them type (crap) here in good ol Terana at the free needle zone!!!!!
I'll bet that if it was a brown bear or black bear killing these innocent carp it would not have made the news.
Posted by: wallyj at April 10, 2008 10:06 PMThat sadistic bear murdered some fish?!
The only soultion is to take him out of his comfy zoo and throw him behind bars!
Posted by: Agent Smith at April 10, 2008 10:31 PMThey should have given him salmon instead of a sh*t eating fish.
Posted by: ural at April 10, 2008 10:37 PMEurope, especially Germany, is anthropomorphization central when it comes to stuff like this. It's because they have been urbanized for so long- their meat has come in Saran Wrap for centuries. :-)
