Why, how RUDE! That's offensive to Germans and homos!!!!! OBVIOUSLY somebody has a few nazi skeletons in her closet!!!!

I only discriminate against politically correct minorities myself. For example, I think NDPers are a small, goat-like race that like to eat disgusting items and bleat endlessly about stupid chit. They infest the inner cities of Canada's most disreputable mega-cities like Toronto.

I think I got closer to that thin putrid green line that seperates hate crime from humour than any of you can. I will take on all comers.

:)

Ah the great Yosh and Stan Schmenge! My faves!

Posted by: Soccermom at April 7, 2008 1:51 PM

Heh. A woman I worked with many years ago, well her husband played in the original Schmenge back-up band on SCTV. He loved playing with those guys.

Posted by: John B at April 7, 2008 2:16 PM

May I be just the latest to say :

Kate rocks!

Posted by: bud at April 7, 2008 2:24 PM

I will watch an episode of SCTV that I've seen 20 times before I'll watch most of the primetime dreck today. No doubt Eugene Levy and John Candy would be ordered to take sensitivity training today.

Posted by: noddyrules at April 7, 2008 2:27 PM

Yosh and Stan rule! I gotta get me one of those outfits!

Posted by: Orlin at April 7, 2008 2:52 PM

Dave Letterman look like they were seperated at birth!

Posted by: 'Biff at April 7, 2008 2:56 PM

That should read, Dave Letterman and Steven Harper look like they were seperated at birth!

Posted by: 'Biff at April 7, 2008 2:57 PM

Hey a little Czech Pilsner beer and some Canadian popcorn makes for great entertainment.

And how about those awesome Lederhosen on Stan Schmenge?

Looks pretty multicultural to me!

Cheers

Look folks - they aint Czechs or German ok. They're Luetonians. From one of the Baltic countries. A proud and noble race.

Posted by: Agent Smith at April 7, 2008 3:11 PM

the difference is that that Schmenge's were funny.

While Brad Wall looks like a unfunny nerd. - that's what got my craw during this unholy mess

Posted by: beardyscree at April 7, 2008 3:21 PM

We need a new Lenny Bruce. Someone who is very popular and takes on every subject under the sun in the most un-PC way. We are being ruled by an illegitimate moral police. We will lose our freedom if we don't stand up.

Posted by: Bob H at April 7, 2008 3:21 PM

Achtung:

I'm not a Nazi and still I'm offended.

Not.

Posted by: set you free at April 7, 2008 3:27 PM

We were free-er years ago than today. Young folks have no idea. I get scolded by people who clearly have never read/heard of PJ O'Rourke, Flo King, Monty Python etc etc., let alone Mark Twain or H.L. Mencken.

I don't like being punished for other people's historical illiteracy! :-)

Posted by: Kathy Shaidle at April 7, 2008 3:36 PM

Yes, Kathy - I too pine for the days when Paul Schaffer had hair (I had some then too). But its not the hair that I miss. It was a time when you could yuk it up at the expense of some ethnic and no one was offended - not even the ethnic. My lineage is Francais. I get ribbed alot about it. I hear people mimmick the accent alot. I get a kick out of how bad their accent is. I'm not offended in the least.

We have to keep on top of this higher moral authority leftard PC crowd that will have us hauled before Human Rights tribunals at every turn.

Oh ya, I miss John Candy too.

Posted by: a different bob at April 7, 2008 3:45 PM

You old timers must have been soooo nasty. You make my confession of pretending to be the Red Power Ranger look almost normal. Still, I'm ashamed of my sorrid past.

If you watch their tribute to John WIlliams, their tuba player looks *real* similar to the composer:

"the difference is that that Schmenge's were funny."

So Beardyscree is the definiive resource for what is funny and what is not? Give me a frikkin break, eh. Premier Wall's performance wasn't intended for public consumption and never was. The fact that "progressives" are starting to act like Islamic extremists with the Danish cartoon is totally lost on them. Lighten up eh. Or better yet listen to some of of Russel Peters work. Best Newfie jokes I've ever heard were told by Newfoundlanders.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at April 7, 2008 3:55 PM

Kate - you are amazing!! No wonder some people in Sask are intimidated by sda., in comparison , the political folks and the msm are all plodders.

Sheer brilliance flashes across the BIG sky over Del. Sask., it flashes across the computer screen of a Northern fan and gives me reason to laugh out loud and say 'YEEEAS' ( my version of the 'rebel yell')!

Posted by: Jema54 at April 7, 2008 4:01 PM

Bob H., we have one already. Two, in fact. Rush Limbaugh in the US, and in CanaDUH, Kate McMillan.

Posted by: The Phantom at April 7, 2008 4:01 PM

Patrick:

Thanks for that link. I know the drummer in the background - see my earlier post above. He said playing with the Schmenge's was a riot.

Posted by: John B at April 7, 2008 4:27 PM

So, according to Brad Wall, and the CTV news, people need to apologize for making fun of politicians, (ie. Roy Romanow)?

Who knew?

Posted by: Rudy at April 7, 2008 4:55 PM

The last outrageous non PC comedian had his career cut short as by the late 80s political correctness was in full bloom.

Andrew "Dice" Clay (born Andrew Clay Silverstein on September 29, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American comedian and actor. He is known for his profane comedy in a career that has lasted more than 20 years. His popularity peaked in the late 1980s.

Director Jay Dubin was quoted on the "E! True Hollywood Story: Andrew 'Dice' Clay" as saying, in effect, "What's the bad news? That he's making seven figures in Vegas?", a reference to Clay's popular Las Vegas Strip comedy shows. He was ranked number 95 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. After a live comedy appearance on the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards he received a "lifetime ban" due to his profane language and offensive jokes.

Posted by: John West at April 7, 2008 4:59 PM

John West-a minor point but his name was Andrew DYCE Clay. Pretty non-PC and a wonderful entertainer. Rented his video once and didn't stop laughing until the end.
The one line I remember goes, when referring to homosexuals, like this.
" If your're gonna walk around with s##t on your dick, you're gonna catch something".
I now suppose I'm gonna be targeted by the authorities for mentioning that.

Posted by: Hector Mauvaise at April 7, 2008 5:38 PM

What's up with the Dire Straits?

Posted by: Doug at April 7, 2008 5:57 PM

I played the accordian from the time I was 8 until I was 16. I was the butt of so many jokes - if only the HRC and comedy police were available during the 1960's my life would have been so much different. I carry those scars of ridicule and laughter with me still. I should get a grant from the federal and provincial governments to help me share my pain with others whose parents may them learn to play the accordian, and how I had to struggle to become a well-adjusted mature woman without the help of social workers of any kind!!! Would anyone like to hear my version of Lady of Spain?

Posted by: Maureen at April 7, 2008 5:59 PM

Another Dice Clay line that stands the test of time... "If you can blindfold them with dental floss, then don't give them keys to a car."

Posted by: Boots at April 7, 2008 6:04 PM

There are many people across this country who still bear the scars of the Schmenge's humour.

Posted by: EBD at April 7, 2008 6:07 PM

I've been taping Sanford and Son reruns lately. We're all familiar with All In the Family allegedly pushing the envelope about race, but Sanford was well ahead, i think. Imagine a show about two poor black guys living in Watts, not rich doctors or lawyers. Fred was a complete bigot, told endless ethnic jokes about their Puerto Rican neighbour, usually to his face. I'm sure his comments about white women would not be tolerated today; he considered them either old and ugly, or young and big trouble. BTW, this is the complete opposite of my opinion...

Posted by: christopher rivers at April 7, 2008 6:09 PM

"Would anyone like to hear my version of Lady of Spain?"

I went through about four years of that myself, before blessedly switching to guitar. Years later zydeco and cajun got big, so I phoned and asked my mom where my accordion was. She'd given it to charity! The nerve!

Posted by: christopher rivers at April 7, 2008 6:13 PM

Another thing:

Isn't it funny how the same liberals who always used to say, "If you don't like it, you don't have to watch it -- just change the channel/don't buy the book" etc, are now the same people who, if THEY don't like something, try to get the perp fired, fined or jailed?

Posted by: Kathy Shaidle at April 7, 2008 6:37 PM

I dunno Kate,Call the Warren Commission...Someones feelings may be hurt.

Posted by: mike at April 7, 2008 6:40 PM

Yes Kathy exactly! Beardyscree I don't think you have a sense of humor in the first place. When you find one then please just stay away from peoples' personal videos and watch what you consider comedy.

Posted by: eliza at April 7, 2008 7:01 PM

We were free-er years ago than today. Young folks have no idea.

Yes, Kathy, how about the good old days when one could enjoy a tasty Picaninny Freeze, or dine out at our favorite Coon Chicken Inn? Damn those pc lefties.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

And how about Brad Wall dropping his lawsuit? He definitely better not darken Kate's door now, the wimp.

Posted by: manny at April 7, 2008 7:12 PM

Rest in Peace, John Candy.

Oh how you could make me laugh.....

Posted by: Shere Khan at April 7, 2008 7:13 PM

BTW, how's that class action lawsuit coming along, Louise?

Posted by: manny at April 7, 2008 7:24 PM

Imagine how hilarious it will be when this clown is in charge of the Ministry of Humour .

"What's up with the Dire Straits?"

Listen to the lyrics, Doug, especially the part about the little bundle of sticks with the earring and the make-up, the one with his own jet airplane.

Posted by: SDC at April 7, 2008 8:04 PM

You notice that Levy and Candy were actually playing those instruments? Oh for the days when popularity actually required talent...

Posted by: Ed Minchau at April 7, 2008 9:06 PM

"I will take on all comers."

Careful Jim....you may offend some ejaculators out there.

My favorite Andrew Dyce Clay line was aimed at two hecklers in the audience...

"Are your names Neil and Bob?....or is that what you do?"

One other point on the bizarreness of PC'ness.

Often,on this site and other forums, when a person expresses their disagreement with gay 'marriages', they are LABELLED as a homophobe by some left-leaning idiot.
Or,when someone expresses a serious concern about our immigration policies,it's only a matter of time before some blogging leftwing footsoldier throws out the LABEL 'racist'.

What these hypocritical PC worshippers simply cannot fathom is that repeatedly trying to stereotype an opposing group as 'racist' or 'homophobe' is the very essence of BIGOTRY itself.

Sigh....

Posted by: Canadian Observer at April 7, 2008 9:27 PM

Oh, for the good old days, when everyone was far less "sensitive" (aka stupid and thin-skinned) and you could have a good laugh--at everyone's expense, because we weren't so damned precious and self-righteous.

RIP, John Candy, who was one He** of a guy. 'Nice legs, too...

Posted by: batb at April 7, 2008 9:56 PM

I thought "Leutonian" was a made-up ethnicity, designed to pre-empt accusations of bigotry.

But they were playing with fire when their sketches referred to cabbage rolls.

Mocking the Bavarians? I am not lafink
Cook zem. Heil HRC

Posted by: Hedley at April 8, 2008 6:28 AM

"Lutonia" wasn't made up to avoid bigotry; it was made up to make Yosh and Stan's ethnicity deliberately ambiguous.

They're sort of Germano-cum-Ukrainian-cum-Polish-cum-Czech-cum-Lithuanian.

If anything, it could have upset any Central or Eastern European ethnic group and sent them scuttling along to the local human rights commissars - if they were the sensitive, easily traumatized, chip-on-their-shoulder types.

But of course, they're not.

And they have a sense of humour: Yosh and Stan once acted as honorary parade marshals at Oktoberfest in Kitchener-Waterloo

Posted by: JJM at April 8, 2008 7:20 AM
