Posted by: Tenebris at April 3, 2008 4:27 PMI am getting increasingly tired of the politically correct age. Eventually there has to be a swing back to some form of normalacy. We cannot make comments about drug dealers, first nations people, gays, or fat people. This week has been unreal. I would hate to be a politician these days because they can't even say anything in the coffee shop or to a friend that might be on tape - how can we freely discuss ideas if we are so afraid of not being politcally correct? I am sick of politicians saying nothing - but how can you blame them with the media how they are? Secondly - the NDP have lots of crazy ideas in their caucus - take their bid to ban private ownership of houses at their convention. It seems no matter what crazy stuff the left comes out with it gets no press...
Posted by: lindy at April 3, 2008 4:35 PMLet this be a lesson to us all: Don't get drunk in the privacy of friends with video cameras and don't use over the top satire trying to be funny for the camera.

In other words - don't do or say anything in private that you would not do or say in public to the media for all to see.
Is anybody here innocent?

They both made unfortunate comments but were treated very differently by the MSM.
tenebris - for someone to label someone's speech as 'racist' or 'homophobic' doesn't mean that this is a valid evaluation!
And, so what? I'm getting fed up with politically correct speech. The FACT that someone may 'think' whatever they think, but are deemed 'sinful' if they both think and express these thoughts is getting ridiculous.
Our thoughts are our own. Our speech is our own. I think we have a right to them; we may indeed be prejudiced and biased and dislike other individuals, other ethnicities, other religions. So? Our thoughts are our own. Why on earth must we like everyone? Why must we accept everyone?
Out thoughts are our own. Acting on them is a different matter and it is only then that the state has any business getting involved. Otherwise, - stay out of my thoughts and my speech.

I don't care what people do in their personal lives in terms of their sexuality and I certainly wouldn't judge someone for their choice - It is none of my business...but why is it that it is okay to be gay but not okay to be anti-gay. Why are we not allowed to judge criminals or drug dealers harshly - everybody makes choices - live with them. I can't BELIEVE this: a video made IN 1991, that the NDP just happened "to stumble across," making disparaging comments about homosexuals, is now being used to try and discredit Prime Minister Stephen Harper's CPC caucus.
This is absolutely LUDICROUS.
Did the NDP actually "find" this video in the offices vacated by the Conservatives a year ago or did someone unearth it and decide to embarrass the CPC government EIGHTEEN YEARS LATER?
This kind of political grandstanding is so transparent as to be pathetic. I'm not defending MP Tom Lukowski's words that night 18 years ago, when he made these comments with a beer bottle in hand ('wonder how many he'd had by then?), but these remarks should not be grounds for demanding his resignation from the CPC caucus. He has made a sincere and public apology, but the Liberals (via their spokesman Scott Brison, who is such a wuss) seem to want a pound of flesh. (I'd just like the over $40-million they've stolen from Canadian taxpayers. Why can't we talk about that?)
I don't hear the NDP or the Liberals (excepting Keith Martin) speaking up for nasty things said about Christians or punitive measures taken against them by our bogus Canadian Human Rights (sic) Commissions.
This is total nonsense.
The only good thing about it, is that it seems to indicate that the Opposition Parties and the MSM must be pretty darned desperate to be trying to tar and feather the CPC by spending so much time on an unfortunate remark made by a CPC MP EIGHTEEN YEARS AFTER THE REMARK WAS MADE.
Pathetic Canada.

Tory MP apologizes for taped homophobic remarks
BRODIE FENLON AND JENNIFER MACMILLAN
Globe and Mail Update and Canadian Press
April 3, 2008 at 5:31 PM EDT
Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski apologized Thursday after the Saskatchewan NDP released a 16-year-old videotape featuring him and Premier Brad Wall that contains sexist, racist and homophobic comments.
In particular, the NDP said Mr. Lukiwski made “hateful” remarks on the 1991 tape shot at Conservative Party headquarters following a leader's debate, while Mr. Wall reportedly made inappropriate ethnic comments.
Those comments include a homophobic diatribe by Mr. Lukiwski, said NDP MP Bill Siksay, who repeated them Thursday during Question Period.
Mr. Siksay told the House of Commons that Mr. Lukiwski “allegedly states on the tape, ‘Let me put it to you this way. There's A's and B's. The A's are guys like me. The B's are homosexual faggots with dirt in their fingernails that transmit diseases.' ”

Tom Lukiwski apologizes for remarks
onservative MP Tom Lukiwski speaks to media in the foyer of the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa
Mr. Lukiwski, 57, quickly apologized for the remarks, which he said don't represent his true views.
“I am truly, truly sorry. I'm ashamed [of] the comments. If I could take those comments back, I would. I would give anything in the world to take those comments back,” he said.
“I have no prejudice against gay people whatsoever. Those comments do not reflect the type of person I am.”
Mr. Lukiwski did not address questions about his future and whether he will step down over the matter.
“Why would you videotape this, why would you keep it and why would you leave it behind?” Saskatchewan NDP deputy leader Pat Atkinson said at a press conference.
“We decided that given Mr. Lukiwski's comments – he's a member of Parliament representing the people of our province in Ottawa – that the comments were so troubling and so disturbing that people needed to know what he had said,” she said.
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall also apologized for his comments that appear to make fun of the Ukrainian heritage of former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow, who defeated the provincial Tories in the November, 1991, election.
“It just never was then, and neither would it ever be, in any way an attempt to slight any group,” Mr. Wall said.
Mr. Romanow was flying to Ottawa on Thursday and was not immediately available for comment.
The New Democrats said they found the tape in a camera case when they moved into Opposition offices after Mr. Wall's Saskatchewan Party won last fall's provincial election.
Mr. Lukiwski was a Tory organizer at the time the tape was made and Mr. Wall was a ministerial aide.
Ms. Atkinson said the pair is heard on tape ridiculing Roy Romanow, who defeated the provincial Tories in the 1991 election. “They're done in the context of Mr. Romanow and his descent, his ethnic background,” Ms. Atkinson said.
“I would say that he [Mr. Wall] is using an immigrant accent of some kind and he is referring in the end to Mr. Romanow ... There are those of us who grew up at a time when, in the province of Saskatchewan, negative things were said about people of Eastern European background and they were hurtful things,” she added.
Ms. Atkinson also said there were inappropriate remarks about the gender of the provincial Liberal leader at the time, Lynda Haverstock.
Government House Leader Peter Van Loan said he was unfamiliar with the videotape but would take the matter seriously.
“The comments do sound distressing and inappropriate and they will have due attention,” Mr. Van Loan said.
Mr. Lukiwski was a long-time insider in the provincial Conservative Party and the Saskatchewan Party before his election in 2004 in the riding of Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre. He won the seat by 122 votes and was re-elected in 2006 with 42 per cent of the vote.
The incumbent, Larry Spencer, was a member of the Canadian Alliance caucus but was dropped by the party after he told a reporter in 2003 that homosexuality should be outlawed and that a conspiracy is responsible for the successes of the gay rights movement.
When the new Conservative party was formed by the merger of the Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance parties, Mr. Spencer was banned from running for the Tories. The party justified its decision by saying people across the country don't accept intolerance.
Mr. Spencer ran as an Independent and garnered less than five per cent of the vote.
Mr. Lukiwski was a small-business owner who served as executive director of the Saskatchewan PC Party from 1995 to 1997. He went on to become the general manager of the Saskatchewan Party, founded in 1997 by former Saskatchewan Liberals and Progressive Conservative party members.
Mr. Lukiwski is married and has two children.
Mr. Wall, 42, was elected premier of Saskatchewan last fall but has been involved in politics for more than two decades. He first served as a ministerial assistant in the final years of Grant Devine's Progressive Conservative government in Saskatchewan.
In 1991, Mr. Wall ran for the Conservative nomination in his hometown of Swift Current and was defeated. He later worked as Swift Current's director of business development before successfully running for the Saskatchewan Party in 1999. He became leader of the party in 2004.

Lets see, a 20 yr old reform paper, cash transactions from 1980, a 16 yr old tape. Sure glad nothing important is going on these days so we can focus on the past.
I also say, bring back some of Tommy's speeches, and what about that woman from long ago and her scary stmts.

Posted by: djb at April 3, 2008 6:33 PMbeardyscree - you sound like Lawrence Joseph, trying to deflect the issue to hide the fact you are an idiot. There is NO comparison to be made here. It is true that the comments in the tape don't meet today's standard of PC, left wing as it is, however comments such as these were more commonplace 20 years ago. If we are to Judge, lets do so by the standards of the day, not the holier than thou standards of today.
The FSIN issue is a different story. What Anenikew said wasn't appropriate when he said it, and for that he must pay. The FSIN reinstating him simply shows them to be a racist organization, which they prove to the world on a regular basis.
Since the twiddle-fingered Johnnies aren't getting the point you're trying to make, EBD, you would need to spell it out for them.
I suspect the statements, taken in context, will turn out to be next to nothing. "Homosexual faggots with dirty fingernails"...oh, my, swoon! I think I have a case of the vapours!
Maybe he should have stolen a ring instead, eh? Or flipped the bird to residents of a small town in BC? Or called for the hanging of a former PM? Or mocked someone's religion? Or march with outlawed terrorist organizations? All of the preceding would be okay...'cause we have precedence already set by our Liberal and NDP friends. But call someone a faggot and I guess it's "hang him high!".
Again, inappropriate comments (from 16 years ago!) which have been apologized for. To mix my metaphors, this is a tempest in a teapot that the MSM will make into a mountain.

They're all keen about being pro-gay and assume that everyone else is as blind as they are to the very real downside to this lifestyle. I suspect that the more the MSM ridicules those who have serious reservations about the gay agenda, the more those people--LOTS of Canadians--will identify with the person being vilified, often unjustly.
The MSM are such a navel gazing bunch of ignoramuses, they don't know what's good for them. And that includes, I think, disparaging a lot of ordinary Canadians, a group they pride themselves on not being a part of. I think this arrogance is coming back to bite them.
I think this is could become more damaging to the NDP than anybody else.
These people remind me of the little suck in the schoolyard always running to the teacher, "I'm telling!"
It's that ridiculous and juvenile.
As others have commented, there's a big brick ready to be thrown at the NDP. Tommy Douglas' eugenics thesis is absolutely brutal and could very well seriously hurt their party. Most Canadians aren't aware of it. I'm considering taking the most horrendous quotes and making it into a viral.
And wasn't his first campaign manager the grand master of Saskatchewan's KKK? There goes their defence that Tommy changed his ways after visiting Hitler.
A dead Party walking.

My guess is that that you don't actually know any gay people, as this 'lifestyle' you speak of is quite the myth. Sure, you've got the doped up promiscuous bunch, but go anywhere in the world where people are generally young & happy and you'll see that those ills have very little to do with sexuality but more so to do with marginalization and youth(not mutually exclusive, obviously).

But seriously -- you think what Lukiwski said is okay (or effin' A, as he would apparently say)??
If I was gay, or one of my kids was gay, I would be really sad and also angry to think that the person voted in to represent my interests in parliament hates me and thinks I spread disease.
Yeah, that guy's really going to be looking out for all of his constituents.
PLUS -- Lukiwski was at least 40 years old when he said this. So he doesn't get the "young and foolish" pass.
I feel sorry for his wife and kids -- the kids must be mortified. I may even feel a little sorry for him too but he said it, and he's in public service and frankly, I think he needs to step down.
And I am shocked at how many of you posting here think these remarks are fine. You should be ashamed of yourselves just like Lukiwski says he is of himself.

If I say, that I can't stand X-ethnic group, then, there can be multiple consequences.
Someone can say: Why?
Someone can say: I agree with you.
Someone can say: I disagree with you; I like X-ethnic group.
Someone can say: I disagree; I think that Y-ethnic group is worse.
Someone can say: You are Evil for Saying Such a Thing.
I don't have to 'accept' all of the above. And certainly, I don't have to accept the last statement, which is actually, far worse than my own original statement.
My original statement is that 'I don't like X-ethnic group'. Period. That's my choice.
That last person was making a statement about me, because I don't like X-ethnic group.
Think about it, manny. Why should I like X-ethnic group? Is it a requirement, in order to be in this society? No? Yes?
So, no, manny. You are quite wrong. I don't have to accept the consequences of my speech. Some reactions to my speech will be juvenile, some will be irrational, illogical. Some will be intelligent. I can pick and choose which ones I'll accept. OK?
I could be wrong but,... when the political parties change from opposition to gov't and vise versa is it not the responsibility of the speaker of the legislative assemble (NDP at the time I assume) to ensure any all belongings are moved to the appropraiate offices. Anything left behind is to be sent to the other party un-molested and if anything is kept and no disclosure is made there can be criminal charges laid agauinst the holder of the item and the speaker. There was a similar incident last year in Ottawa...though the memory is rather sketchy. Can anybody with a mind for parlimentary procedure comment?

Wall and Lukiwski are guilty of unfunny boorishness that very few people I've ever met -- particularly few in political life -- can honestly say they have never descended to. The bad accent is almost unforgivable to be sure, but primarily from the point of view that one shouldn't do accents unless one can do them well.

Pure utter political desperation. Shows you how badly the NDP got their asses kicked in the four by-elections. Layton is looking over his shoulder at Mulcair and will do anything to try and trigger an election now before he & the NDP slip ever further down the slope of political oblivion.
Tom wasn't even in the Conservative Party when he made the comments, so why should he have to step down. It's really up to his riding to decide if they want to vote for him again. I'm from Ontario and I only wish I had an MP as nice as this man.
Posted by: Ruth at April 3, 2008 7:46 PMKate, I'm probably going to get tarred for this, but so what.
Both Lukiwski and Wall made a mistake. They went grovelling in public over comments on a tape made 16 years ago at some party when they were private citizens. Their only comments now should have been that they were not going to talk about events at a private party when they were not in public life and left it at that.
I suppose they could have turned the issue around and asked into the motives of those who gave the tape to the media.
The whole thing would have lasted for three days and been forgotten about. The public at large isn't interested in this crap. They didn't care about the Cadman deal nor the supposed Afgan torture deal.

jhuck,
It is as cool to say 'faggots' as it is to say 'red neck' 'honky' 'whitey' 'white trash' or to call people Nazis, sluts (usually assigned to white women since we all know that the black equivalent is Ho and only black people can say it) or any number of names assigned to what used to be the normal, hardworking, tax-paying, law-abiding white persons.
Slowly but surely we are becoming less intimidated about calling a spade a spade. The CHRC notwithstanding we need freedom of speech or at the very least speech equality. If you want to slang me, I reserve the right to equally slang you.
I think white people and Christian people are getting fed up with being the whipping boys and girls for the blacks and the mulitcults and gays who have absolutely nothing to be pissed about. Those who do this, are nothing but a pack of ingrates who deserve to be back in their 'home' countries. That would be a cold shower for them.
Just like Mike Harris probably starting to look pretty good now in Ontario, the North American free democracy would look pretty good those others after a few weeks in Somalia or wherever.
And I wonder how much the gays would like to have their parades canceled and be shoved back into the closets. They complain too much. Want too much. I think all people have it pretty good here. But you just can't please the perpetual victims. That would put too many of them out of work.

Let's ask more about where this tape of a private party was found. That's the story here.
Yeah and about that many years ago we were learning to not drink and drive, 'cause that was real cool to brag about, and we were still having unprotected sex!
This says no more to me about MY MP than what the above says about me: Other than we grow up and grow with the times!
Thank God we have good people who will serve as politicians despite the risk of being hung and quartered for something that can be politicized. Both Brad and Tom are good people!
You know, isn't it ironic, when PM Harper has a successful NATO meeting out comes another psuedo-scandal. Now the MSM is focused on this tape from all those years ago taking away the good news coming out that meeting. An apology was given so you think they'd let it drop but no Fife and Tonda Mcharles on MDL says that Tom has to give further explanation. Apology given, credit to Bill Siksay, apology accepted so let's move on.
These statements were made more than a dozen years ago at a party in which you can tell that they were pretty drunk. Everyone one knows that when a person is tipsy, you can lose your inhibitions and say and do things that you normally don't when you're sober. Besides this was before either one was in public life. Really nobodies business.
Posted by: frmgrl at April 3, 2008 8:12 PMWHOA WHOA WHOA! Sniff test time!
"Tom wasn't even in the Conservative Party when he nade the comments..." Is this factual?
Because if he wasn't, then why and how would this tape have been in the offices the NDP claim it was? There isn't much to hang on to as a keepsake, and even if there was, I would think it would be at home, not at the office. Perhaps there is a more plausible explanation of how the NDP "found" the tape.

They hate the establishment to the core, their very being, because it has always shunned, ignored and ridiculed them.
The hatred is deep enough that gays and lesbians will side with an Islamic takeover of the planet even though they themselves would be the first recipients of the wrath of Sharia law.
How could any extreme leftist agenda be anything more than a suicidal mental disorder? Suicide is a crime in western societies, murder-suicide a harsher penalty, but we allow these people to perpetrate both with nothing but politically correct whispers of tolerance.
The more I think about this the more pissed I get. Here is a 17 year old tape of some young guys in the lower eschellons of government having a good time and letting off some steam. The NDP are trying to crucify Wall and Lukiwski for some dumb stuff said 17 years ago. I want folks to remember how, after the Devine government was defeated, the NDP went after ministers of that government with a vengeance. They prosecuted some real questionable offences that ended up hanging criminal records on people that should never have been prosecuted. That's what you get when you deal with jealots like the NDP.
I think Wall should take the gloves off. He should order micro audits on each and every department of government for the last 14 years. Any, and I mean ANY, wrongdoing goes straight to the Justice Department for investigation. The
Dippers want to play hardball - then hardball it is. Let the fun begin!!!!
will some one tell these GD politicians to start governing , and quit the personal mud slinging

faggots???????hell, I'v been using that term since kriste was a cowboy, and it usually references a liberal or a dipper, not a gay, and that is concievably why the "homosexual faggot" was used.As homosexual and faggot would have different "meaning" back then, as today they are interchangeable.

Yep, rude and crude. Complete with bad language, sexual banter and insensitive comments. I am sure that the politicians involved are thoroughly embarrassed. I am not sure that it will have the impact that the opposition is hoping for. Most of us mere mortals have gotten drunk and behaved badly on occasion. Posted by: bluetech at April 3, 2008 9:24 PMI listened to the tape and my first thoughts were: this is a bit of an effort to rally the troupes in the week before the election - at a time when the PCs were down in the polls. So there was lots of silliness going on. As others have said, it was a long time ago.
I must say, I was more offended at the comments about the size of former LG Lynda Haverstock's "balls" and that she was a slut. I think history has shown it's anything but.
I do hope, for everyone's sake involved, that none of the parties have gay family members as that will be awkward.
Finally, I doubt that the NDP "held onto" this to strategically release now. Had they found this sooner, it would have made its way into previous election campaign strategies.
Take a deep breathe everyone and then exhale. This is no more relevent to current party politics than the issue about theft in the NDP caucus office by a former employee about the same number of years ago.
Posted by: MMM at April 3, 2008 9:33 PMLook, I'm sorry, yet it remains the case that I do not agree that anything dumb or guilty or bad was done by the accused in this case. What do the prosecuters want here, the end of the drama of language? The end of thrust and parry? The end of give and take? Shall there be no more touche?
This whole tempest in a teapot is just stupid. People who propagate it, from either side, should be ashamed of themselves. They need to learn how to hold a proper salon, instead of complaining about those who do.

Posted by: Sammy at April 3, 2008 9:34 PMI watched excerpts from this tape on Global and didn't hear anything offensive. The tape appeared to be of a group of people who had obviously had a bit to drink. Perhaps someone should take a group of dippers drinking and secretly videotape them while quoting portions of Tommy Douglas's thesis after they're good and smashed. I suspect this experiment would be very revealing.
The comments about queers on the tape were factual as queers do spread diseases. I got an email recently from a heterosexual ex-patient who I diagnosed with HIV in which he was ranting about having to sit in a waiting room full of faggots and being seen by a fag doctor. Heterosexual HIV is distinctly uncommon with 95% of HIV postive individuals being homosexual. In Vancouver HIV primary care is largely the province of homosexual doctors which is fine as I no longer find HIV interesting.
The only mistake I can see that Lukiwski made was apologizing for his remarks. I don't apologize for comments I've made in the past unless I've consumed sufficient alcohol to have no recollection of what I've said (something that happens almost never now that I'm older).
There is a double standard where queers can get away with outrageous behavior which would land someone who is heterosexual in jail. When I was practicing in Vancouver I had a number of HIV+ patients tell me that they went to bath houses and regularly had unprotected anal sex with other men. I'm not the only doctor aware of this practice but I don't feel like fighting the HRC should I make a stink about the public health implications of this.
If a heterosexual doctor has consensual sex with a former patient, he'll likely lose his license for a year or two. Homosexual doctors seem to be exempt from this rule as I've had homosexual patients tell me that they've had sex with homosexual doctors that were treating them. Maybe since the queer lifestyle often involves having several hundred sexual partners/year, even in a city the size of Vancouver it's likely that doctor and patient will hook up often enough that if the same rules which applied to heterosexuals held, there would be no practicing queer doctors.
What I find far more offensive is comments by leftists proposing to ban posession of firearms by Canadians. These, and any similar statist totalitarian comments should be vigorously opposed. It's idiots like these who should be groveling in front of the TV cameras, not individuals who voice their disdain for homosexual activity. There appears to be no evidence that Lukiwski proposed to criminalize consensual homosexual activity which would require an apology if he said it in public.
""0Brad Wall: Because those comments are just simply unacceptable, and I'm not sure what direct relationship there is between an endorsement and those comments except that that individual and the website, if those words are reflective of their view, I would like not to be on our caucus website."
So, in view of what Wall said about SDA, I'm wondering if Kate is going to BAN him from her website. Turns out tha Wall is just another racist.

Posted by: Horny Toad at April 3, 2008 9:40 PMWait a second here. I'm hearing the NDP say these are hurtful comments. If they are so hurtful, why the hell did they release the tapes to the press? Could it be because they are actually thrilled with the tapes, and the opportunity to paint the Saskatchewan Party as uncaring, no matter what the collateral damage to those they pretend to stand up for?
A fart in a hurricane in my opinion. If this is all the opposition can come up with and the media declaring it BREAKING NEWS, then the opposition are truly desperate.
Posted by: multirec at April 3, 2008 9:46 PMThe NDP in Sask are trying to score points on Brad Wall's Ukranian accent. Well lets hold the CBC acountable for This Hour Has Twentytwo Minutes for all thier commody skits with heavy Newf accents. How many times has CBC made Newfs look like a dumb buch of islanders.
The left allways trys to look so concerned when trying to defend gay rights. But when its exposed from a Muslem mosque(lets throw gays from the mountain)they go after the news station that broke the story. As did happened in the UK. The left are only concerned until they find a bigger voting block that will keep them at the trough. Like a dirty old diseased ##### they will cozy up to any group that will keep them in power. We will see how liberal or gay rights stand up in Europe fifty to a hundred years from now.
So how come whenever Stephen Harper does something good, someone conveniently "finds" something which takes the focus off that good thing.

Crude? Yes. But I think Vitruvius at April 3, 2008 9:34 PM pretty much sums it up. This will last five minutes. Then it'll be on to the next scandal de jour.
I would like to compare Lukiwski's and Brad's class up-front admission and apology to a certain American president of a few years ago, who the leftards seem to worship. Even Spitzer was better than "I-did-not-have-sex-with-that-woman" Clinton.
Posted by: Louise at April 3, 2008 9:50 PMI sent e-mails to both Brad Wall and Tom Lukiwski and told them to hold steady. We have all at one time or another said things under the influence of a few drinks. This was 16-17 years ago?? The NDP acquired this tape through nefarious means as it is a party tape and I don't mean a "political " party tape. The self- rightousness of the spokesperson for the NDP is dripping into the mike as she speaks.Kate, isn't it amazing that we are hearing from trolls that have not surfaced for months .

Posted by: Louise at April 3, 2008 9:51 PMI hope there's some limitations to what one said.If I remember right, twenty seven years ago when I was in the army I'm sure I said some very hurtful things and some may have been directed at certain ethnic and sexually oriented groups. Gawd I hope they don't find out about this at work, and the kids, how could I have been so insensitive.
Posted by: h.ryan. at April 3, 2008 9:52 PMIt may surprise you all to know, but alot kids now a days call many things that you used to call "not cool" and I use to call "wack","gay". For example they think the fact there was no internet in the early 90's is gay, or we had to wait for Saturday morning to watch cartoons is gay. If you do not believe me watch South Park or Kenny vs. Spenny if you old farts can handle it. I won't even tell you how they use the word "lez", your generation is still going crazy over the "B" word.
Many of your kids (mine included) are homophobes and that is that. Obviously that is completely ridiculous. As stated earlier comedians like Russell Peters, Rosie O, Dave Chapelle and everyone else( including you) participate and laugh at humor that may offend someone else. This is NOT racism and EVERYONE knows it. This is clearly a political move and the time is NOW to crush the Liberals and kill Political Correctness. It is time for an election and put all of this BS behind us once and for all. I agree with a post from yesterday, S.Harper should call and election because the government doesn't have an effective opposition. A broken promise of fixed election dates will not make or break his majority. I'm pretty sure over 40% of Canadians are tired of this "ghosts from the past" tactic. The Liberals have failed all of their supporters, they will move right and left, and in the end S.H. will win, BIG.

They are positively orgasmic.
Note: Didn't see the tape, didn't read the transcript, won't. Too silly. Won't be watching TV News (stopped years ago). That, in brief, is my mental health programme for coping with this terminally silly country.
Apologize for what? For hurting someone who may have been hurt had he heard this, but who didn't hear it -- 16 years ago? If I were advising the parties I'd tell them, DON'T APOLOGIZE. Say nothing or say, "C'mon folks it was harmless acting out at a private party with booze ... everybody does this kind of stuff at some time in their lives". AND, if I was to go on, I'd excoriate the NDP for invasion of privacy. The matter has zero relevance.
Kate: Don't dignify this nonsense with any further comment. It ain't worth it. Terminal silliness best left to stupid people. Let the thread die a natural death.

Posted by: bluetech at April 3, 2008 10:06 PMHumour is a right wing concept, Vitruvius. The enlightened tribe who are coming to help us know that umour is hurtful, painful, disturbing, damaging, harmful....
Remember Nestor Pistor? In 1980 he was nominated for a Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year, an album which included the song "Winestoned Plowboy". Pistor was perhaps most famous for his Ukrainski "Twelve Days of Christmas" and also, as this afternoon, as Duffy and the NDP would have it, for being a mere cog in a pogrom against the feelings of Ukrainians...
Duff: "One of the things that Brad Wall, the new premier of Saskatchewan did was do a take off on what sounds to be an attempt to, to be funny, taking off a Ukrainian farmer, talking about Roy Romanow. And I'm old enough to remember -- and Pat, you may remember as well -- a a guy who called himself a comedian named Nestor Pistor who traveled across western Canada telling Ukrainian jokes. I thought he and that type of humour had long ago disappeared."
Pat Atkinson, Saskatchewan NDP Deputy Leader: "Well yes, ahhh, I think that's correct. I mean, there's a number of people in this province who will remember what went on in the sixties and seventies, ahhh, and even before, uh, in terms of, ahh, derogatory remarks that were made of people of Eastern European descent and, uh, there are, there are people in our province that still bear those scars, ahh, and I would say that ahh, these remarks, really, even seventeen years ago, ahh, for a young man, would not have been acceptable and, ahh, though, it's just, the whole thing is rather troubling and sickening and that's, ahh, why we thought that, you know, people really did particularly need to see Mr. Likiwski's remarks, and one of the things we said this morning was, first of all, why would you tape these remarks, and secondly, why would you keep the tape, and third, why would you leave the tape behind?"
Question: As Jimbo mentioned above, if the remarks are so hurtful, they're only hurtful when someone hears them. So if they're sitting on a dusty tape somewhere, and then someone plays them for millions of people, who's responsible for hurting all those peoples' feelings? It pretty much shows, doesn't it, that the point isn't about people being genuinely injured, it's entirely aboutabout controlling the behaviour of others.
If someone produces a batch of poison, and I pour it into the city water supply, should I get away with squealing self-righteously about how hurtful the poison is? Not really, huh?
Posted by: EBD at April 3, 2008 10:07 PMA crude joke, lasting a whole four seconds uttered while slightly inebriated at a party held sixteen or seventeen years ago, where most present were half drunk and having a good time.
This was obviously a slow news day.
Posted by: Louise at April 3, 2008 10:08 PMPlease tell me that political discourse in this country as not degenerated this far!!! Please!
BTW for any future PC gotcha types I would like to add that my use of the word country does not now nor forevermore in my mind or intent refer to any part or use of the female anatomy.
Now can we get back to things that matter to grown ups.
Posted by: Joe at April 3, 2008 10:15 PMLukiwski is clearly lampooning someone. His was not a spit flecked hateful diatribe (see Liberal Roseanne Skokes comments from the past for that angle), but a guy with a couple of drinks in him hamming it up for a buddy with a camera.
Juxtapose this with Scott Reids alchohol fueled, mean spirited "Alberta can blow me" while he was a sitting Prime Ministers chief of Staff, and the attempt by the media (Don Martin in particular) trying to keep a lid on it by implying what is said while drinking is off limits.
Any fool can see that this is a non issue. Any media who try to run this as a scandal are going to look very stupid, biased and desperate.
Posted by: ward at April 3, 2008 10:17 PMActually, EBD, I have just now been spending some time preparing a copy off the original vinyl of one of Nestor Pistor's great works, from his Metro on Broadway album, for the next SDA LNR, in honour of this tread.

Yes, they do. And they make crude jokes, too.
This is just the leftards' usual hyperventilation.
Posted by: Louise at April 3, 2008 10:24 PMThis was a planted tape for sure and we wonder who - maybe now an NDP/Liberal supporter -took it. Strange.
Being from Newfoundland, we have been made fun of for years. Shake it off and get a life lefties. The things we said 16 or 20 years ago are not acceptable now and we all know it. Under the influence of liquor sometimes people may say the wrong thing but really - those people are human and I am sure they will continue to do a good job for ALL of us. We hear worse at any Rider game in front of children.
How is it that these smart politicians have 16 year old material hanging about? Any time I have moved from an office or home, I take everything, nothing left. Guilty of something...your stupid! Who cares what you said 16 years ago. All this posturing by the Libs, NDP simply brings home the fact they have nothing current or important to talk about.
Posted by: bobbyg at April 3, 2008 10:39 PMRegardless of how the media tries to tell us that homosexuality is accepted by all Canadians, they are wrong. Gay/lesbians can get all upset whenever the truth comes out that they are not well respected by a good many canadians. The more they shove it in our face the more we object. Did we really have to know that guy is in a ssm, like Scott. Why do they always think they have to come out. It has been shown that aids was spread by their lifestyle, and the blood scandal was their fault. We have governments telling us not to smoke, use a cell phone, eat transfat, wear a seat belt and helmuts, all to protect our health. Why then, can't they tell the truth about diseases that are spread by gays and drug users.
I prefer the time when gays were in the closet and smokers were out. Now it is reversed. We are supposed to have freedom of speech and thought and it is time to send Political Correctness the way of the dodo bird. If you are offended by what someone says, or does you just have to walk away and stay away from them.
What about the camera zooming in on the license plate on the chest of that pretty blond girl with glasses? Sexual harassment there I tell you. It was a party, goofing off, letting off steam. The difference to Ahenakew is that this was done in jest in a private group setting. Ahenakew did his deed twice, once in the public and again to a reporter, no laughter, carrying on or the like. His was visceral and emotional. The leftards have finally lost it if this is the best that they can come up with. Were any of these statements by Lukewski or Wall made in a public forum or to the media. No. Did they sound visceral or emotional. No. If the tape was never found we would not be having this debate. This whole thing is a joke from start, 16 years ago to now.
Posted by: Swill 1984 at April 3, 2008 10:44 PMThis is really a non-issue. It's a group of people having a few beers getting a dig it at each other. The fact that fags are mentioned makes it a crisis for the super intolerant gay community and their supporters in the media.
Posted by: LEDA at April 3, 2008 10:47 PMOr is the media the super intolerant gay community?
Posted by: LEDA at April 3, 2008 10:54 PMWhy would you do that, Vitruvius, when there are so many people who still bear the scars of Pistor's last "troubling" and "sickening" attempts at humour?

Posted by: Vitruvius at April 3, 2008 11:06 PMJust heard Bob Fife on CTV say that there are "knuckledraggers" in Steven harper's Conservative Party and that's why he has to keep them muzzled. !!!!!!!
Tell me , again, why Tom has to apologize for satirizing some people at a private party amongst friends and yet CTV's Bob Fife can call MP's "knuckledraggers" as a "news" story with national exposure and get away with it?????
Posted by: lmf at April 3, 2008 11:08 PMYes, why does Bob Fife get away with insulting people who belong to the Conservative Party?
What about the Liberals at the Liberal Convention, who 'accused' Rae of having a 'Jewish' wife? What about Hedy Fry's 'burning crosses on the front lawns'?
Oh, and as usual, the quality results of Harper's work are being ignored. He got NATO to agree to 1,000 more troops. The Canadian MSM, mired in gossip and tabloid journalism, ignore this impressive result.
I've had a very quiet life for 80 years and have never been in a group who drank more than a couple of drinks so this kind of conversation is new to me. But I have an opinion and that is:
He not only shouldn't resign, he shouldn't have apologized for something he said in private. Far worse is said on TV every day.
If he thought he had to apologize, he should have said he was sorry that what he said in private 16 years has offended people. And left it at that.
Any homosexuals acting offended by this are only doing so because it can be construed as an embarrassment to the CPC party. And that goes for all NDP, Liberals and MSM.
It takes far more than that to offend a homosexual, and if there is one who would like to come and have a cup of tea with me, I'll explain it to them in person.
Just heard Bob Fife on CTV say that there are "knuckledraggers" in Steven harper's Conservative Party and that's why he has to keep them muzzled. !!!!!!!
When are these so called journalists going to held to account? Had this been a Liberal, it would not have made headline news. The bias in the MSM is so blantant anymore. Why don't they admit it?
Yup, anything to bash the Conservatives. It's just getting ridiculas.
Here are a few definitions of the disgusting conservative phobic slur that Bob Fife lobbed at Conservative MP's tonight on the national news when he called them "knuckle draggers":
1. knuckle dragger:
Reminiscent of the hunched over cave man, with his arms to the ground. An insult used against those of extremely low intelligence, or general stupidity.
knuckle dragger:
A term used for a human who is evidence of devolution - humans evolving back into apes and other primates.
This man often dribbles in public places; cannot drink a hot beverage without spilling it on himself, the floor or someone else; may walk into objects like lampposts and bushes; may ask questions repeatedly such as "how are you doing?", or "hows your computer software going?" and has an interwoven, messy beard that houses flees, mites, pieces of pork and dribble.
It's safe to say that the knuckle draggers of this world are a frightening breed, who you should avoid if at all possible.
Knuckle Dragger:
Another racial slur used towards a black person relating them to gorillas who walk around dragging their knuckles
knuckle dragger:
A narrow minded person often dressed in Burberry who eats curry and complains about Paki’s. They travel in packs and have large shiny foreheads and slopping posture. A person whose views and opinions have been passed down through the family without changing in 100 years. The female of the species can be found with greasy hair pushing a pram and screaming at any one of its five kids. They are most likely found in a small town called Bedworth (or beduff as it is know round here), famous for producing Pete Doherty
And Bob Fife is demanding that Tom Lukasiwik apologizes!!!!!!
Because it's war, Imf. They're beside themselves that they can't get the Conservatives out of there. There's panic among the mediacrats and the bureaucracy and the LPC because it's starting to sink in that they might not get back into power in the near future. That's why we're seeing an endless string of shamelessly specious Conservative "scandals."
Never mind our prime minister overseas, or the Zimbabwe results, or anything else; no, this utterly trivial party-quip story is the top story on The National tonight. The stop story in the world, as far as CBC goes.
BTW, seriously, if anyone gets a chance, watch replacement anchor Diana Swain's demeanor on the National Tonight when she adds a couple of wrap-up words after the story of Mr. Harper's overseas trip. She is openly dripping contempt, like it hurts to even be referring to him. They're not even trying to hide it any more.
Posted by: EBD at April 3, 2008 11:25 PMThe shining examples of hypocrisy are all of the aghast denouncers shouting "shame" for a Conservative using the word "faggot"...and then accosting Conservatives in the next breath by calling them "rednecks" and "knuckledraggers".
"Faggot" is generally used as a term of denigration towards homosexuals. "Rednecks" is generally used as a term of denigration towards westerners. What the #@%& is the difference if someone uses either of these terms? The only difference is one identifiable group is a popular "victim" group.
Hypocrites. Vipers.

Posted by: Robert Bricker at April 4, 2008 8:57 AMMorning in Hogtown: What leads off the CBC news? THE VIDEO.
What I loved was the wounded look on Heather Hiscox's face when she went to her cub reporter on a downtown Toronto street, who'd just spent an hour cornering Torontonians on their way to work to ask them WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS TAPE AND SHOULD LUKOWSKI RESIGN FROM THE CPC CAUCUS, and green-behind-the-ears girl cub reporter reports: "Inappropriate was a word used a lot, but because the tape was 17 years old, most people didn't think it warranted resignation?"
Hiscox looked cornered, or more wounded if that's possible.
Hey, there was an important NATO Summmit meeting, CBC, just wrapping up. Prime Minister Stephen Harper looked really good there. Wouldn't a grown-up, serious-thinking, newscaster focus on THAT meeting rather than a kitchen-klacth 17 years ago?
CBC: further down the tube...in the basement.
As for this tape having just been "found" in some offices: As I said much earlier, this has got to be a fabrication--and surely there must be rules about turning over property left behind in government offices. It can't just become the new property of a rival political party.
'Should be an investigation of this.
Posted by: batb at April 4, 2008 9:56 AMHOGTOWN CBC: Now the headline is "Calls mount for politician's resignation."
EXCUSE ME?
In the next breath, "so far, it looks like he's winning this fight," says idiot female talking head, looking defeated, wounded, and disconsolate.
Boy, is the CBC spinning this BIG-TIME.
What idiots. They OFFEND ME and THEY SHOULD BE GONE.
Posted by: batb at April 4, 2008 10:04 AMThe Leader Post - unfortunately our only newspaper - stooped to an all time low today publishing ALL the tape details. Passed that section over - waste of space. This paper is so biased. Wish I had a choice.
What will be the future with all those cell phones taping everything in sight?
I want to see all the blackmail tapes that may be out there.
Posted by: What did Edgar say at April 4, 2008 11:32 AMSo let me got this staight. 17 years ago at a party, just after Devine etal had their collective asses handed to them by the electorate and the NDP, a bitter 26 year old made fun of the winner's ukrainian heritage by stating (with a poor accent) that Romanow's head was in his nether regions. Immature? Yeah. A reaction to the defeat? Probably. Pre meditated racism? Give me a break. Forgivable after an apology? Yep. Move along. Nothing more to see here.
Posted by: Brian Mallard at April 4, 2008 11:47 AMYeah, where are all the Dipper and Librano videos after cocktail hour, lampooning and lambasting the Conservatives?
Doesn't anyone else wonder--where ARE our investigative journalists when we need them? In the U.S. or in jail, it seems--why it's only videos that compromise the Conservatives that "happen" to show up where they're not supposed to be but never the other way around?
Something's really fishy here. I think the MSM should apologize, first, for showing videos that they should never have been given in the first place and, second, for calling a SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD, boozy, late-night aftermath of a defeat amateur video "NEWS."
Shouldn't there be a statute of limitations on stuff like this? The Liberal/Dipper MSM Lapdogs are sucks.
I'd like to hear more about PM Stephen Harper's success at the NATO Summit in Romania. THAT's the news that should be leading the CBC and CTV news casts. A little professionalism is in order here--that's all I'm asking.
Posted by: batb at April 4, 2008 11:57 AMTom clearly has lost his sense of humour from years ago or he would have given Scot a big kiss on the cheek in the House of Commons. Mabey it is coming. I am waiting.
Posted by: What did Edgar say at April 4, 2008 1:03 PMLukiwski remarks were just a reflections of the time. Here are a few examples of NDP and Liberal views.
On former Manitoba NDP MLA - Joe Borowski -1988 Wikipedia says:
“Borowski also published a series of works in the late 1980s that were criticized as homophobic. In 1988, he released a document that called for "all known gays" to be quarantined from the rest of society until the AIDS epidemic had subsided. He also published a work entitled Child Molestation and Homosexuality, the front page of which showed a middle-aged man attempting to lure a child for sexual purposes. Winnipeg AIDS activist and future mayor Glen Murray became a vocal opponent of Borowski during this period.”
In 1994 current Liberal MP Tom Wappel referred to homosexuality as "statistically abnormal, [...] physically abnormal and [...] morally immoral".
Over there in the Big Field, on that long, straight (but bumpy) road, what is the difference between a flat, dead-right small-animal and a flat, dead-wrong Premier?
Before the unfortunate, flat small-animal there is a long motor-cycle skid-mark.
Before the fortunate, flat Premier there is a cloud of sweet flatulence.
Is that a broken, or a flat Broten on the horizon?

Posted by: clair voyant at April 4, 2008 5:18 PMSeventeen years ago I was in the hospital recovering from a brain Aneurysm. My friend Cathey rushed down from Ft. St. John to donate her blood, in case I needed a transfusion. She told the Dr.s that Canadian blood could be contaminated with AIDS (not one of those Dr.s told her she was wrong!). Cathy's source - the WHO in Geneva - she had just been there visiting a friend who worked for the WHO.
A year later a good friend who was a nurse got AIDS from a guy who did not tell her he had AIDS when he came to the hospital with a cut on his leg. My friend had an open hangnail on her right hand; she put gloves on after she looked at the wound. My friend died of AIDS.
Everyone was terrified of AIDS, our PM Johnny boy crouton bought bad blood from his pal Billybob Clinton from prisons in Alabama. Our blood supplier was forced into PC mode and were not eliminating high risk for AIDS donors from giving blood. I have another friend who got bad blood and contacted AIDS - he just got a lump sum of $$ for his years of suffering ....from a Conservative Prime Minister, Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Put all this information into context folks - the horror was everywhere and like all things too terrible to dwell on - the 'bad' jokes made the horror bearable. Kind of like the polio jokes that were around when I was a kid - I had had polio and one leg was shorter - I never thought twice about the jokes, I was just glad that I did not have an iron lung like the old WWI vet I knew; he told polio jokes all the time. Epilepsy jokes are all over today and so are Aneurysm jokes. Where is the OUTRAGE from the Dippers/Puffins/media? Nowhere...but when I apply for employment all these conditions are considered and they are not in my favour!
